This implied that using the game-based problem-solving in teaching mathematics is more effective than employing the conventional method. My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text,especially in mathematics. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently,this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

The performance of Mathematics at Kenya Certificate of Primary Education has remained low compared to other subjects at this level (KNEC, 2006,2007,2008). This study investigated the factors affecting the teaching and learning of Mathematics in selected public primary schools in Usian Gishu between the period of May and July 2010. The study was guided by the following objectives: to establish the teacher, learner, syllabus and school-related factors affecting the teaching and learning of Mathematics and to determine challenges faced in Mathematics teaching and learning in primary schools. The study employed a descriptive survey study design and was guided by the education production function theory. The study population comprised of head teachers, teachers and pupils in public primary schools in Usian Gishu of Rift-Valley province. Stratified random sampling was used in selecting 15 schools for participation in this study. Purposive sampling was used to select fifteen head teachers and 45 teachers of Mathematics for inclusion in this study.

The pre-service training can be characterized as emphasizing formalmathematics training at advanced level. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) encompasses a broad range of computer technologies that supplement the classroom learning environment and can dramatically increase a student’s access to information. This study was aimed at determining the effect of CAI on the academic achievement of junior high school students in Pre-technical Skills. The study employed the quasi-experiment, pretest-posttest non equivalent groups design in two junior high schools purposively selected for the experiment. In all, eighty junior high school second year students participated in the study. Using the results of a pre-test, the schools were put into treatment and control groups. The treatment group completed a CAI based learning programme over a period of four weeks. The control group received the instruction through the traditional method of teaching at the same period. The study revealed that there is no significant difference between the general performance of the experimental group and that of the control group. However, it was concluded that CAI has influence on the learning of specific aspects of basic design.

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, grade: 82, , course: Mathematics Teaching, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate how children learn Geometry (at all levels of compulsory education) in Mathematics. This study was chosen because of my difficulties in the area and the possible under-representation of Geometry in the Mathematics Curriculum. Five tasks were given to two students for each Key Stage 1-5 inclusive. These were then analysed using the "Van Hiele model of Geometric" reasoning; which was used to make an assessment of children's geometrical ability. The study also draws on theoretical frameworks from eminent researchers like Vygotsky, Piaget and Bruner as well as engaging fully with current educational literature and research. A questionnaire on Geometry was also completed by a variety of primary, secondary and A-level mathematics teachers. It was found that geometrical ability increases with age (although young children can display sophisticated knowledge of shape) and that students mainly drew shapes of a non-prototypical orientation. This has increased my subject knowledge and enhanced my classroom practice and also may have the implication of changing other practitioners' teaching strategies.

Student Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were the specific individual student affective factors that were examined in the study. Educational backgrounds of the students were examined as an attempt to explain the differences in mathematics performance at the higher education level. To achieve this, high school teacher characteristics and instructional practices in influencing students' affective factors were examined. All of the analyses presented were performed on data collected for the study from two institutions of higher education in Cameroon for the student participants and from high school mathematics teachers of the English-Speaking and the French-Speaking subsystems of education. The results of the study show that student internal locus of control, high mathematics self-efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were associated with performance in mathematics at the higher education level. Proficiency in algebra is critical to success in today's competitive world. Algebra is the foundation for any form of higher mathematics in high school and beyond. Research indicates that completion of Algebra II correlates significantly with success in college and earnings from employment; students who complete Algebra II are more than twice as likely to graduate from college as students less prepared in mathematics (NMAP, 2008). The results on the standardized tests in California are startling: our eighth graders ranked 44th in the nation in 2007 in mathematics and nationwide there are no signs of growth in mathematical proficiency. The National Mathematics Advisory Panel, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and other organizations are actively engaged in an effort to streamline the K-8 mathematics curriculum and find the best research based practices which will guarantee success in Algebra for all students.
