This engaging book introduces new readers of eighteenth-century texts to some of the major works, authors, and debates of a key period of literary history. Rather than simply providing a chronological survey of the era, this book analyzes the impact of significant cultural developments on literary themes and forms – including urbanization, colonial, and mercantile expansion, the emergence of the «public sphere,» and changes in sex and gender roles. In eighteenth-century Britain, many of the things we take for granted about modern life were shockingly new: women appeared for the first time on stage; the novel began to dominate the literary marketplace; people entertained the possibility that all human beings were created equal, and tentatively proposed that reason could triumph over superstition; ministers became more powerful than kings, and the consumer emerged as a political force. Eighteenth-Century English Literature: 1660-1789 explores these issues in relation to well-known works by such authors as Defoe, Swift, Pope, Richardson, Gray, and Sterne, while also bringing attention to less familiar figures, such as Charlotte Smith, Mary Leapor, and Olaudah Equiano. It offers both an ideal introduction for students and a fresh approach for those with research interests in the period.

Reading the Eighteenth-Century Novel is a lively exploration of the evolution of the English novel from 1688-1815. A range of major works and authors are discussed along with important developments in the genre, and the impact of novels on society at the time. The text begins with a discussion of the “rise of the novel” in the long eighteenth century and various theories about the economic, social, and ideological changes that caused it. Subsequent chapters examine ten particular novels, from Oroonoko and Moll Flanders to Tom Jones and Emma, using each one to introduce and discuss different rhetorical theories of narrative. The way in which books developed and changed during this period, breaking new ground, and influencing later developments is also discussed, along with key themes such as the representation of gender, class, and nationality. The final chapter explores how this literary form became a force for social and ideological change by the end of the period. Written by a highly experienced scholar of English literature, this engaging textbook guides readers through the intricacies of a transformational period for the novel.

Founded in 1848 as a secret society, the Pre-Raphaelites rejected classical ideals and the dominant artistic genre painting of their era for what they saw as a more spiritual, sincere, and naturalistic approach. Founded by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, they evolved into a seven-member "brotherhood" that included poets and critics as well as painters. Moving away from the classical compositions exemplified by Raphael (hence the group's name), the Pre-Raphaelites rather turned to medieval culture and the jewel-like colors of Quattrocento art for inspiration. Their principal themes were initially religious, but also included subjects from literature and poetry, as exemplified by Sir John Everett Millais's famous Ophelia, drawn from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Inspired by the theories of John Ruskin, they were also committed to the close study of nature. This book presents key works from the Pre-Raphaelite group to introduce their reactionary principles, their dazzling colors, their interest in love, death, and nature, and their extensive influence on latter-day Symbolism and beyond.

Albert Watson first came to public attention in 1994, with his first book, Cyclops, which has since become a collector's item. He is considered the eminence grise of top photographers, an intellectual loner who neither respects the boundaries of genre, nor is willing to compromise in matters of his own artistic demands. From advertisements for the fashion and cosmetic industry to portraits of celebrities such as Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol, to nudes, still life and landscapes, Watson's range is as impressive as the aesthetic forcefulness and the emotional intensity of his pictures. His curiosity appears to be as inexhaustible as his reputed chameleon-like changeability and the pleasure he takes in permanently inventing new pictures. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The book considers creative works of Irish English-speaking poet symbolist W.B. Yeats, Nobel prize winner (1923), in the context of the Russian poetry of his time. Such typological comparison is useful for our interpretation of Yeats’s poetry; here we find explanation of the unknown by means of the known. But on the contrary: comparison of the whole constellation of Russian poets and one of their Englishspeaking contemporaries lets us understand better the unity and continuity of the evolution of the Russian poetry of the early 20th century. A special place in the book belongs to chapters dedicated to the meeting of Nikolai Gumilyov and the Irish poet in the summer of 1917. Other chapters contain comparison Yeats to the best Russian poets. The appendix consists of 50 selected poems by Yeats translated by Grigory Kruzhkov.

Uncertainty and Mechanics studies the concepts of mechanical design in an uncertain setting and explains engineering techniques for inventing cost-effective products. Though it references practical applications, this is a book about ideas and potential advances in mechanical science.

A fan of Gothic Romance novels, naive Catherine is soon letting her imagination run wild in the atmospheric abbey, fuelled by her friendship with the vivacious Isabella Thorpe. It is only when the realities of life set in around her that Catherine's fantastical world is shattered. A coming-of-age novel, Austen expertly parodies the Gothic romance novels of her time and reveals much about her unsentimental view of love and marriage in the eighteenth century.
