Exergy analysis has been performed for identifying the causes, locations, and magnitudes of process inefficiencies for the COREX process. A composite model of the COREX process (i.e., models for the smelter gasifier and the reduction shaft) using FactSage 6.2 (Thermfact/CRCT, Montreal, Canada, and GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany) is used to generate stream data for exergy computation. The effect of use of methane as an auxiliary fuel and high ash coal in smelter-gasifier has been investigated through the model. A new methodology for the calculation of exergy of the process streams using the database in FactSage is proposed in this work. The exergy loss/destruction (measure of the thermodynamic irreversibility) and exergy efficiencies of the COREX process are evaluated at various coal rates and compared with those of the blast furnace. Operating the COREX process is theoretically feasible at lower coal rates with higher exergy efficiencies when lesser export gas is generated.

Several countries with large coal deposits but limited domestic oil reserves show high interest in coal-to-liquid (CtL) technologies, which could reduce crude oil imports by converting coal into liquid hydrocarbon fuels. After decades of successful large-scale operating experiences in South Africa, CtL activities in the United States, China and Germany have been fanned by the high oil price in the last years. However, CtL indicates negative techno-economic and resource-related features, such as high capital costs, high greenhouse gas discharges and high water consumption. Therefore, the technology's diffusion strongly depends on a favourable framework of policies and strong technology advocates. Daniel Vallentin analyses interdependencies between technical and non-technical parameters affecting the diffusion of CtL technologies in the United States, China and Germany. Applying the inter-disciplinary technological system approach, he identifies factors which determine the market prospects of CtL in these countries, including costs, the geographic distribution of coal reserves, actor constellations and technology, energy and climate policies. At the end of his study, he derives general conclusions with regard to driving forces and barriers for CtL diffusion. As the investigated countries are major consumers of energy and belong to the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, their strategies in substituting crude oil based fuels are of utmost global relevance. There...

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 90, , language: English, abstract: Energy is the cornerstone of the economic development, so it is bound to reexamine the energy policies and take drastic steps to cope with the growing energy consumption. One way used to overcome the power consumption problem is to seek for minimizing losses, which is made by studying the management of power production in steam power plants from the first and second laws of thermodynamics point of view. Some researchers adopt a new approach using a computer software in their studies. A computer program called Energy and Exergy Analyses (EEA) was proposed and built to cover the shortage and overcome the problems of the previous programs. EEA has an interactive form containing many systems which have not been studied in the earlier programs. The proposed program is applicable to any steam power plant. The reversible, isentropic and the actual power of each equipment in the plant are calculated. EEA calculates the thermophysical properties of all supplied streams. It calculates the thermal efficiency, the exergetic efficiency and the exergetic destruction of the power plant. Also, the energy loss and the exergy destruction in the power plant's systems are listed. It presents the exergetic efficiency and destruction of each component and make a comparison between them. As the boiler is a major and important system in the power plant, EEA presen...

Therefore, it is imperative to look for more sustainable energy sources that may solve the abovementioned problems. For several decades, (inter)national governments have made plans to reduce the economy's dependency on fossil fuels by the substitution of alternative energy sources such as renewable energy sources. The Technological Innovation Systems approach is most suitable for the analysis of the development and diffusion of renewable energy sources, because it focuses on a particular technology and it includes factors that are specific to the technology studied. In this research work we have presented the relation between the way in which System Functions are being fulfilled and how they contribute to the development and diffusion of biomass energy particularly Jatropha biofuels in Tanzania, since the technology is locally so novel that it will require substantial experimentation in order to be commercially viable and applicable on a larger scale.

The global warming phenomenon as a significant sustainability issue is gaining worldwide support for development of renewable energy technologies. The term “polygeneration” is referred to as “an energy supply system, which delivers more than one form of energy to the final user.” For example, electricity, cooling and desalination can be delivered from a polygeneration process. The polygeneration process in a hybrid solar thermal power plant can deliver electricity with less impact on the environment compared to a conventional fossil fuel-based power generating system. It is also THE next generation energy production technique with the potential to overcome the undesirable intermittence of renewable energy systems. In this study, the polygeneration process simultaneous production of power, vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) cooling and multi-effect humidification and dehumidification (MEHD) desalination system from different heat sources in hybrid solar-biomass (HSB) system with higher energy efficiencies (energy and exergy), primary energy savings (PES) and payback period are investigated, focusing on several aspects associated with hybrid solar-biomass power generation installations, such as wide availability of biomass resources and solar direct normal irradiance (DNI), and other technologies. Thermodynamic evaluation (energy and exergy) of HSB power has also been investigated, along with the VAR cooling system, the modelling, simulation, optimization and cost analysis of the polygeneration hybrid solar biomass system, all accompanied by multiple case studies and examples for practical applications. This volume provides the researcher, student and engineer with the intellectual tool needed for understanding new ideas in this rapidly emerging field. The book is also intended to serve as a general source and reference book for the professional (consultant, designer, contractor etc.) who is working in the field of solar thermal, biomass, power plant, polygeneration, cooling and process heat. It is a must-have for anyone working in this field.

Originally published in 1865, The Coal Question is a series of studies and inquiries into whether progression of the industrial age would deplete the world's coal resources as societies advanced. Economist William Jevons includes an introduction to the history and uses of coal, and includes the opinions of others, geological, cost, pricing, and consumption aspects, import and export rates, and alternatives to coal in his analysis. Jevons's analysis is interesting to read considering the eventual move from coal to petroleum as the world's main resource for energy. Not only were coal mines not exhausted, but there are reserves in several countries, including China and the United States. Despite the author's miscalculations, The Coal Question is a fascinating look into the production and circulation of coal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. English economist and logician WILLIAM STANLEY JEVONS (1835-1882) was born in Liverpool. He studied chemistry and botany at University College, London, and was later professor of logic and political economy at Owens College, Manchester. He is also the author of The Theory of Political Economy (1871) and The State in Relation to Labour (1882).

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,0, European School of Business Reutlingen (ESB), language: English, abstract: China's extremely fast growing economy has made the demand and supply of energy a crucial topic. Today, China is the largest consumer of primary energy and the third largest producer. In the years between 1978 and 2000, the Chinese economy grew by 9% while at the same time the energy demand only grew by 4%. This trend has been turned around in 2001, when growth was stable at 9%, but energy demand grew by 13% a year. While China demanded 10% of the world energy demand in 2001, supporting these demand by 96% of domestic production, in 2007 they already accounted for 15% of the worlds energy demand, making them dependent on imports for coal, oil and gas,due to domestic supply lower 90%.As a result of these movements in the domestic demand and production picture of primary energies, China will have to face growing dependencies on the international energy markets, to secure sufficient energy to industry and population. The purpose of this paper is to show the change of trade flows in China with a focus on the primary energy resource coal, oil and gas. The change of production, consumption, import and export of these as well as related topics as price and transportationwill be identified.Illustrating government involvements and economic players will complete the researchto offer a comprehensive picture.[....

This book discusses the linkages between renewable energy, poverty alleviation, sustainable development, investment opportunities and climate change in the Gambia. My discussion includes types of renewable energy technology, special emphasis is placed on biomass-based energy systems. Biomass energy has a number of unique attributes that make it particularly suitable to climate change mitigation and community development applications. In the Gambia, the lack of access to convenient and efficient energy services is a major barrier to achieving meaningful and long-lasting solutions to poverty. Nevertheless, when poor people and communities obtain access to convenient and efficient energy services, one major barrier to poverty reduction can be lowered or removed.By promoting biomass energy to provide clean and efficient “modern” energy services in the form of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels as well as electricity, the government can address many of the negative aspects of small-scale household and commercial biomass consumption. This can help developing countries diversify their resources for low-carbon energy production.

Cogeneration or combined heat and power is a technology that reduces primary energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases by making a better utilization of fuels when compared with traditional separated systems. CHP can have an overall efficiency of 70% - 85% compared with the around 51% average overall efficiency of generating electricity and heat by conventional systems. CHP systems make better use of fuels by using recovered heat to drive thermally-activated components. During summer season, recovered thermal energy can be used to drive an absorption chiller to produce cooling. Therefore, the system is able to produce electricity, heating, and cooling. This kind of system is called combined, cooling, heating, and power (CHP or CCHP) systems, also known as trigeneration systems. This study is about the analysis of energy consumption and other benefits that make this technology technically and economically feasible.

Energy geostructures are a tremendous innovation in the field of foundation engineering and are spreading rapidly throughout the world. They allow the procurement of a renewable and clean source of energy which can be used for heating and cooling buildings. This technology couples the structural role of geostructures with the energy supply, using the principle of shallow geothermal energy. This book provides a sound basis in the challenging area of energy geostructures. The objective of this book is to supply the reader with an exhaustive overview on the most up-to-date and available knowledge of these structures. It details the procedures that are currently being applied in the regions where geostructures are being implemented. The book is divided into three parts, each of which is divided into chapters, and is written by the brightest engineers and researchers in the field. After an introduction to the technology as well as to the main effects induced by temperature variation on the geostructures, Part 1 is devoted to the physical modeling of energy geostructures, including in situ investigations, centrifuge testing and small-scale experiments. The second part includes numerical simulation results of energy piles, tunnels and bridge foundations, while also considering the implementation of such structures in different climatic areas. The final part concerns practical engineering aspects, from the delivery of energy geostructures through the development of design tools for their geotechnical dimensioning. The book concludes with a real case study. Contents Part 1. Physical Modeling of Energy Piles at Different Scales 1.
