Environmental pollution has increasingly become an issue of global concern because of climate change and consciousness for environmental sustainability. To this end, this paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and economic growth of the G8 countries over the period of 56 years spanning 1960 through 2015 using both the Fully Modified and Dynamic OLS estimation techniques. The empirical investigation establishes the critical roles played by energy consumption and CO2 emissions on economic growth but in substantially opposite directions. While that of the former positively enhances economic growth, on the one hand, the latter negatively deters it. In addition, a long-run relationship is equally established but with the varied direction of causality. Finally, the study offers significant policy implications directed at using energy resource efficiently as well as curtailing environmental contaminants.

One way used to overcome the power consumption problem is to seek for minimizing losses, which is made by studying the management of power production in steam power plants from the first and second laws of thermodynamics point of view. Some researchers adopt a new approach using a computer software in their studies. A computer program called Energy and Exergy Analyses (EEA) was proposed and built to cover the shortage and overcome the problems of the previous programs. EEA has an interactive form containing many systems which have not been studied in the earlier programs. The proposed program is applicable to any steam power plant. The reversible, isentropic and the actual power of each equipment in the plant are calculated. EEA calculates the thermophysical properties of all supplied streams. It calculates the thermal efficiency, the exergetic efficiency and the exergetic destruction of the power plant. BeschreibungThe work at hand participates with the energy transition toward decarbonized electricity production by providing a method to analyze the incentives for the dispatchable fleet to provide flexibility. It analyzes the signals set by the energy markets to investors and power plant operators regarding flexible power plant operation and the future requirement of thermal plant flexibilisation, with improvement suggestions. A method for the quantitative, long-term, high-resolution techno-economic assessment of an individual power plant's operational flexibility is proposed. It includes the single unit self-scheduling problem of a merchant power plant solved from a price-taker perspective in the day-ahead, intraday and frequency control markets, as well as a parametric power plant model suited for operational flexibility assessments. The retroactive observation of the merchant power plants' operation strategies in these markets is used to identify best practices in terms of market design for flexibility incentives. The value of operational flexibility improvements is quantified using various metrics, for different technologies and market environments. Despite their sensitivity to market design, technologies and cost structures, these results indicate that if investors further expect a three to five-year return on investment, the existing European conventional fleet is unlikely to experience a significant flexibilization.

The combustion of fossil fuels emits massive amounts of CO2 which need to be covered by means of limited emission permits. Coal is the fossil fuel which on the one hand is provided with the largest reserves (thus assuring future fuel availability at comparably low costs) but is on the other hand emitting the largest amount of CO2 per MWhel. Therefore, technologies to capture and store that CO2 are under development. Thosetechnologies come with significantly higher capital cost for the plants and high energy losses ingeneration. Consequently, high carbon prices are required to incentivize investment into that innovative technology.But the adoption and diffusion of innovations is not only a question of financial incentives. Transitions of energy regimes are phenomena that have profoundly affected economies and civilisations over the last 600 years. The shifts from wood to coal, from coal to oil and the potential change to another resource that might be pending now have influenced the ways in which we work, produce, and live. Though they are fundamentally influenced and steered by economic forces these changes have seen little analysis from the viewpoint of economic theory.This book seeks to contribute to filling this gap. To this avail, it firstly provides insight into the historical and present transitions that have taken place. It then gives an overview of the existing economic approaches to energy regime transitions and develops a new interpretation based on evolutionary economics. For this, an approach based on complexity theory and complex adaptive systems is created and applied and the mechanisms behind regime changes are interpreted according to this framework. The analysis is supported by further research into certain aspects of transitions: Historical and present research on resource depletion is compared, the working of path dependence in the constitution and decline of the oil regime is analysed, and the role of entrepreneurship in a regime change from the oil regime towards a potential renewable energy regime is investigated. Cameroon has vast renewable energy resource potentials, with a hydropower potential of about 55, 200MW, second only to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa. So far, its energy needs are met by 4.8% hydropower (which accounts for less than 5% of its total hydropower potential), 0% wind and 0% solar. Cameroons' energy sector still goes through insufficient electrical energy production, especially during the heart of the dry season, which runs from December through March. Coincidentally, the wind and solar power potentials for Cameroon are at their peak during these months and could conveniently supplement for the shortfalls in generation during these periods.In this research, technical analyses were carried out to determine the wind and solar energy resource potentials for Cameroon using the RETScreen software tool provided by CANMET Canada. These analysis revealed that the northern regions of Cameroon had higher wind and solar resource potentials than any other location in Cameroon. A 2MW installed wind energy capacity would be capable of generating well over 1.5GWh electrical energy per year, while a 2KW installed solar energy capacity will be capable of generating well over 3MWh electrical energy per year. In the final sections, financial analysis were carried out to determine the economic viability of such projects and the possibility for self-financing. Nuclear power is a cheap and traditional form of energy. Therefore, there is a large international supply with a strong demand for it. Nevertheless, there are also big risks in the production of nuclear power. Nuclear meltdowns with far-reaching consequences have occurred in the past, e.g. the well-known meltdown at Chernobyl in 1986 and the newest disturbance at the Fukushima nuclear power station in Japan in 2011. These have provoked a major global, public discussion on the future energy supply from nuclear power stations. In Germany, 17 nuclear power stations supply most households and companies with energy, and 7 of the oldest nuclear power stations are temporarily recaptured from the electrical network. An important consideration regarding the economical shutdowns of nuclear power stations in Germany dominates public workaday life. The alternatives are renewable energies. However, they supply only a small amount of energy. If there is a consideration to shut down nuclear power in Germany, it is significant to do so in an economical manner.
