Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mining Engineering, grade: 2.0, Technical University of Clausthal (Department of waste disposal and Geomechanics), course: Applied rock mechanics, language: English, abstract: Determining the stresses that exist in the rock mass opening has been a significant area of research in mining for a long time. The main reason for this is the concern of roof collapse of the excavation due to overlying pressure from the rock mass. This thesis is concerned with the state of stresses that exist in the rock mass in 2 conditions: 1. Stresses in rock before the mine openings; 2. Altered state of stresses after the excavations are made. Theories have been formulated to calculate the pre-stressed state of the rock mass. But any sort of measurement invalidates the original condition of the intact rock. There are mainly 3 ways to study these different stress conditions in the rock mass: Analytical solutions using pre-defined mathematical equations; using numerical modelling to predict the stresses by duplicating the in-situ stress conditions; and in-situ measurements of the stress conditions in the rock mass. One of the first assumptions taken while doing the measurements is assume that the rock mass is elastic and homogenous (single layer). There are also assumptions where the rock is considered viscous, plastic or a combination of these. But for this research project, the first assumption is considered. This is done to ease up th...

This book addresses the latest issues in multiscale geomechanics. Written by leading experts in the field as a tribute to Jean Biarez (1927-2006), it can be of great use and interest to researchers and engineers alike. A brief introduction describes how a major school of soil mechanics came into being through the exemplary teaching by one man. Biarez's life-long work consisted of explaining the elementary mechanisms governing soil constituents in order to enhance understanding of the underlying scientific laws which control the behavior of constructible sites and to incorporate these scientific advancements into engineering practices. He innovated a multiscale approach of passing from the discontinuous medium formed by individual grains to an equivalent continuous medium. The first part of the book examines the behavior of soils at the level of their different constituents and at the level of their interaction. Behavior is then treated at the scale of the soil sample. The second part deals with soil mechanics from the vantage point of the construction project. It highlights Biarez's insightful adoption of the Finite Element Codes and illustrates, through numerous construction examples, his methodology and approach based on the general framework he constructed for soil behavior, constantly enriched by comparing in situ measurements with calculated responses of geostructures.

The first-order second-moment (FORM) method and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) procedure are adopted as the reliability assessment models and they are implemented for the case of plane failure. For the systematic analysis of uncertainties associated with the rock slope stability parameters, a model developed within the framework of first-order second-moment approach is presented.
