Eszter Minich The emerging New Englishes and the language learner

The book investigates the way learners of the English language view native and non-native varieties of English with regards to the varieties they intend to acquire. The analysis is based on empirical data gathered in a small-scale empirical study with the participation of Hungarian learners of English of different ages, levels of English and educational background. The results reveal that native speaker varieties of English are favoured over non-native varieties by learners when they choose a target variety of the language. Moreover, several factors influence this choice of target variety, including knowledge of the varieties of English, personal influence, the situations in which learners of English use the language outside the classroom, learners' aims concerning the use of English in their future, native and non-native interlocutors learners use the language with and certain language-related attitudes. The participants were also found to reject the norms of non-native varieties of English and English as a Lingua Franca as possible alternatives to the standards of the native varieties.

Maria Clarisa Lucero-Ulrich Enhancing English Learning Experience for ESL Learners. A Nursing Intervention

English is becoming an important language for foreign students who do not have English as their mother tongue. English as a second language is difficult to learn. Most of the learners are on their university study and are considered adult learners. The study was made to improve the English learning experience of international students whose aim is to learn the language. This book is about factors that affect the learning ability of English learners. Stress is one of the major factors in learning. There are some other factors that affect the ability to learn. Some of those factors are peer, environment, academics and teachers. This study suggests nursing interventions for teachers to enhance the learning ability of their students. This book can help other researchers to improve their studies regarding adult learning.

Macmillan English 2: Practice Book (+ CD-ROM)

Macmillan English is the first International English coursebook to be informed by English lessons in native speaker classrooms. It is designed for second language learners of English but uses many of the approaches to reading, writing and speaking that underpin the teaching of English to first language children. In the early levels, the course does not assume a first language child's experience of spoken English or culture. Language structures are introduced and practised to give a firm grounding in grammar, but from the start, the exposure to new language is more extensive than in traditional second language courses. As children move up through the course, they experience more first language teaching methods. At the upper levels children cover the same aspects of English as do first language learners, though the needs of second language learners are always taken into account. Each level of the course is delivered through eighteen units. Each unit has six lessons requiring a minimum of seven teaching sessions.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 91.1%, , course: Applied Linguistics, language: English, abstract: This study has sought to investigate the lexical inferencing strategies that Jordanian graduate and undergraduate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) employ as they read to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words. It examines whether learners of various academic levels would use the same or different strategies. It evaluates how successfully they can employ these strategies to attain the proper meaning. To this end, a survey comprising of a lexical inferencing test and a questionnaire was used to collect data from 103 learners of English. learners were divided into three groups: beginner (first year) BA students, advanced (fourth year) BA students and MA students. The collected data from learners' responses were analyzed quantitatively, and categorized qualitatively according to Paribakht and Wesche's classification (1999) of linguistic knowledge source-based lexical inferencing strategies. Results show that learners' lexical inferencing ability was inadequate in general, particularly among beginner students at the BA level. The most frequently used strategy by all groups is the discourse-based strategy followed by establishing word associations then by grammar-based strategy. Results show differences between the study groups in terms of the successful employment of certain strate...

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - Adult Education, National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad (English Department), course: Research Project, language: English, abstract: The present study aims to investigate, that age is not a detriment to language learning .As young students are biologically disposed to better second language learning, as well as given certain benefits such as lower self-monitor and affective filter ,but at the same time adults are also not at a lower vantage point in L2 learning process. In the language learning program, adult learners bring with them certain advantages. Adults are better at understanding grammatical rules since they are aware of the rules and structures in their own language. [...] Especially in the areas of vocabulary and language structure, adults are actually better language learners than children. Adult learners have more highly developed cognitive systems, are able to make higher order associations and generalizations, and can integrate new language input with their already substantial learning experience. They also rely on long-term memory rather than the short-term memory function used by children and younger learners for rote learning. Adults have already developed learning strategies that have served them well in other contexts. They can use these strategies to their advantage in language learning. This research will suggest ways of dealing better with adult learners in their academic perfor...

Theresa Schmidt English Inversion in Second Language Acquisition of German Native Speakers

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 3,0, 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: On the basis of questionnaire data, this study seeks to find a tendency for native languageinfluence in the judgement of German-speaking learners of English. Seeing that the conceptof language transfer has received diverse weight in the history of second language acquisition(SLA), the present account illuminates the issue anew, with a specific linguistic concern.Inversion structures, though not canonical, are very frequent in the German language, whereas the English language offers comparatively rare environments which trigger or allowfor inversions. As previous studies found, language transfer, in regard to word order, emerged when the native language exhibited flexible word order, and the language to belearnt, in contrast, had a rather fixed one. This gave rise to the assumption that Germannatives would generally accept subject-verb inversion in declarative sentences in English, even if for a native speaker of English the structure would not be acceptable. Thus, thesecond language learners are expected to score high on the acceptability rate for themajority of instances of inversion in English, since the German equivalents of the test itemsare basically quite acceptable in German.

Jenny Streb A Contrastive Analysis of German and English Morphosyntactic Features

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the accuracy of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is explored with the help of a study investigating the German L2 morphosyntactic competence of 15 English L1 speakers in two settings: a language assessment test setting as well as in online processing.Within this thesis L2 morphosyntactic competence was limited to the two investigated areas of subject-verb-agreement (SVA) as well as the distinctive verb placement in German main and subordinate clauses. Previous research has identified these two linguistic areas as being especially prone to error in adult L2 acquisition of German. Since all test takers varied in their German language proficiency levels (encompassing a range from A2 to B2 according to the CEFR) it was hypothesised that L2 learners of a B2 language proficiency level generally outperform L2 learners of a lower language proficiency level (B1 and A2) in all investigated areas. However, this hypothesis could not be affirmed since the study did not find significant differences in the morphosyntactic competence of English German L2 learners between test takers of distinctive CEF language proficiency levels.

The objective to introduce English so early is to make children studying in government schools efficient in the language, by early exposure to the language so that they may compete with children studying in public schools. The actual implementation of these goals varies from school to school. The demand for good quality education makes it imperative to study the situation of English language teaching in the state and analyze the actual English language teaching scenario in primary schools in the state.

Academic Language in Second Language Learning

Language in academic settings, also referred to academic language, has gained attentionin the field of second language learning owing to new understandings of the complexitiesof language inherent in learning academic content, and new efforts to assessEnglish learners' language proficiency in the context of school learning. The conceptof academic language as distinct from social language has been in the academic literaturesince the mid-1950s, and surfaced as a major construct in the field of bilingualeducation in the 1980s. Many readers will be familiar with the ideas of BICS andCALP, first introduced by Jim Cummins in the 1980s. This book presents a critique ofacademic language as a separable construct from social language, and introduces currentresearch efforts to understand how English learners interact, interpret, and showunderstanding of language in academic contexts in ways that re-think and go beyondthe distinction between social and academic language. The book is organized into three main sections, each with a range of chapters that consider how academic language playsinto how children and youth learn academic content as emergent bilingual students in school settings. A Foreward andAfterward offer commentary on the book and its contents. The intended audience for this book is graduate students, teachereducators, and researchers interested in issues of language and content learning for English learners, the new mainstream ofschools across the nation. Najafi Sarem Saeid Language Learning Strategies and Bilinguality

Following the paradigm shift in the area of language teaching from the previous teacher-centered methodologies towards learner-centeredness, attempts were made to bring up the learners who could take responsibility for their own learning. The ultimate goal of this new trend was to make language learners autonomous and independent in the process of language learning. Thus, new studies focused on investigating the characteristics of language learners in order to determine and highlight the characteristics of good language learners and make them available to other learners. The conducted explorations revealed that one of the areas in which good language learners were reported to excel other learners was known as language learning strategies (LLSs). These studies showed that instructing the appropriate strategies could enable language learners to process the language more efficiently and in the long run could lead to the development of communicative competence, enhanced proficiency, and autonomy in the learners. This caused many researchers to turn their interests to studies related to LLSs and to try to define theoretically this new concept.

This book attempts to define English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and globalization based on the literature and highlighting its major facets. Discussing the spread of English and motives for this kind of spread, the book outlines some of the impacts the language has had on different societies, cultures and the kind of reactions this language has generated among different cultures. The spread of the English language can't be fully understood without the hegemonic nature of English. Yet, this book claims that, despite the hegemonic nature of English, it is still badly needed in the Arab world for the purpose of communicating with the world, education, acquiring technology and development at large. To teach English as such, it is necessary to change the traditional methods of instruction. It is important to solidify teaching of the native language, empower the learners to have more self-confidence through learning English, teach the language as a foreign, rather than second language, and make changes in the curriculum in response to the needs of the learners and society.
