It is important to emphasize that our current knowledge of enteric virus epidemiology in Cameroon is limited and the general disease burden of these viruses is unknown. Globally, molecular diagnostic tools have greatly improved out appreciation of the role of enteric viruses in the etiology of acute gastroenteritis. The high detection rate of enteric viruses in Cameroon should prompt in-depth clinical investigations to establish if these viruses are causative agents of diarrhea or are just a silent passenger in the intestinal tract. Advance knowledge on the transmission network of these viruses is indispensable for effective prevention and control of associated diseases. This Book is intended as a foundation of knowledge on enteric virus epidemiology in Cameroon. Emphasis has been put on risk factors, prevalence, seasonality, genetic diversity, dynamics of circulation and transmission of enteric viruses. The book should be especially useful to students of virology, researchers, physicians, nurses and public health officials.

This book is based on the investigation about the impact of basic determinants of aggregate import demand in Pakistan by taking sample data of 19 years and applying ordinary Least Squares method. The quantitative estimates revealed that imports of Pakistan are more sensitive to real income and comparatively less sensitive to import prices. The estimated elasticities indicate that imports are sensitive to real income (1.85), and the value of price elasticity of demand for imports in Pakistan is (-0.66). Thus, income elasticity of demand for imports is greater than price elasticity in the case of Pakistan. A relatively small price elasticity of import demand of Pakistan is mainly due to the high domestic inflationary pressures and it suggests that exchange rate policies in Pakistan are not likely to be effective in dealing with balance of payments deficit.

The Hamoodur Rahman Commission was officially reconstituted in 1974 to interview returning prisoners, particularly senior officers, and issue a supplementary report to their original landmark document. The supplementary report makes fascinating reading, based on the Commissions in-depth interviews with these senior officials and officers who were directly responsible for the conduct of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. This supplementary report is also easier to read than the original document, being less technical and much shorter. However, it still manages to paint a vivid picture of the circumstances that led to the surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. The report, just like the original, is also extremely candid in discussing the culpability and responsibility of senior officers in the events that led up to Pakistan's humiliating surrender.

Lead and cadmium are recognized as environmental pollutants. One of the major sources of atmospheric lead is the burning of gasoline in vehicles containing antiknock additive lead. The environmental pollution and smoking contributes a lot for cadmium concentration in human blood. A research based survey was conducted to find out the levels of heavy metals in blood samples of subjected persons of two cities of central Punjab, Pakistan viz. Ghakkhar and Wazirabad with the average period (15 yrs) of exposure towards automobile emission. The levels of cadmium and lead in human blood samples of investigated and control groups were examined between August to December 2010. Blood samples of subjected persons age ranged 25-60 yrs were collected. Control group includes the adolescent males (16-20 years). Cadmium and lead concentrations were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Mean blood cadmium and lead level among investigated groups was significantly higher as compared to control group. So this book will help to know that environmental lead and cadmium pollution is associated with an increased blood lead and cadmium level in those who are regularly exposed to vehicle exhaust

The parasites that live and nourished from blood cells of the host are called hemoparasites. The two main species of Plasmodium i.e. P. vivax and P. falciparum are endemic in Pakistan. P. vivax is dominant over P. falciparum. Literature revealed that the prevalence of P. vivax in Pakistan is 74% while P. falciparum is 26% (WHO 2009). The present research estimated the intensity of Plasmodium infection in Korangi, Karachi to develop awareness and protective measures. One year data has been collected from hospitals and laboratories of Korangi Creek and examined. Total 481 infected slides were observed out of which 396 (82.3%) were P. vivax and 85 (17.6%) were P. falciparum. The infection ratio was 4.5:1. The infection % in Male is 59.25% while in female is 40.75%. The statistical analysis shows variation in mean and standard deviation of age, the mean age was 25. Infection incidence in age group 1-15 years 15.17%, in 16-40 years 81.28% and in 41-60 was 3.53%. It was concluded that incidence rate was high during the year especially of 16-40 years of age. The protective measures are required to overcome the disease. This study will benefit to students and researchers in this field.

This book is written in the context of the current Islamic extremist terrorism, its Pakistan based hotbed, its operational access in the central Asia, and Persian Gulf regions, and its global implication. We examine that the invention of Pakistan a few decades ago in the name of Islam from a fragmented, cross border ethnic and geographical arbitrations has inevitably forced all Pakistan’s successive governments to rely on a narrative based on Islamic ideology, and utilization of Islamic groups to keep Pakistan intact. The analysis in this book explains that this same utilization of Islamic narrative and Islamic groups has been the other side of the coin, which has been the fertile ground for extremism and terrorism recruitment and empowerment. The analysis concludes that the utilization of Islamic extremists as the reason for creation of Pakistan has been a slippery slope of empowerment of uncontrollable extremism and transnational Islamic extremist groups, which in turn has become the Achilles’ heel of the conception of Pakistan. The analysis in this book will point out that other Islamic nations have various elements of cultural and historical values in their national narrative.

The Muslim League, a party which championed the cause of Paksitan was set up on 28 December 1906 in Dhaka, with the following objectives: 1. To promote among Muslims a feeling of loyalty to the British government and to remove misunderstandings; 2. To protect and advance the political rights and interests of Muslims, and to represent properly their needs and aspirations to the British government; and 3. To prevent the rise of hostility among Muslims toward other communities. The Muslim League and the rulers of Pakistan, to date, have very sincerely served the British and the American interests in Pakistan and in the region. The bitter fact is that the landed aristocracy, the Generals and the security forces now control Pakistan and its destiny; and sad thing is even they don’t know what is the destiny of this unfortunate country and how to reach there. When the British Raj ended in India on 15 August 1947, the State of Jammu and Kashmir also gained its independence. The Government of Pakistan acknowledged this fact by entering a Standstill Agreement with the Ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan violated the Agreement and attacked Jammu and Kashmir on 22 October 1947.

Pakistan has exercised different forms of Political systems like Presidential, Parliamentary, Federation and One Unit. Local Bodies system has also been influenced by these experiences. It has been facing Political, non-political, dictators and bureaucratic influence. Pakistan has poor facts of democracy. It has been ruled by the military, while the Military governments always generated mistakes with the politicians. Pakistan's capacity to protract the low cost conflict in Kashmir is beyond any doubt. Although the likely spillover effects of this on Pakistan's polity are obvious, they will be, to a great degree, manageable. The Islamist organisations, in spite of their opposition to elements of the state and its armed forces, are in favour of maintaining the unity of the country that is, for them, "the fortress of Islam" and "the only Islamic nuclear power". And though the US wants to tame the Pakistan army, and especially ISI its intelligence agency, it knows it will not benefit from the disintegration of the country. Nevertheless the pressures that imperialism and neoliberalism are putting on the country are creating a complex mesh of ethnic and nationalist tensions that could lead to a spiralling war. Only by fighting for a unified working class response to the pressures of globalisation and war can we hope to be able to offer an alternative.

This study addresses one central question: Why did democracy succeed in India but not in Pakistan? The central argument of the study is that there is political participation of the military in Pakistan but not in India due to three closely inter-related reasons. First, as a result of the British colonial experience in the United India from the 19th century up to the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the Hindus held pro-western and pro-democracy orientation, while the Muslims resisted entrance into the western education system. Second, the early building of political institutions in India prevented the Indian army from seeking a direct role in the mainstream politics of India. In contrast, the constant fragility of the political institutions in Pakistan from 1947 to present, led frequent coup d’états in Pakistan. Third, there was a significant difference in the way the Indian and Pakistani military perceived them, as an Organ of the state or a custodian of the state. Another important insight of this study is that the US played a strong role in encouraging democracy in India, on the one hand, and supporting the military’s role in the politics of Pakistan, on the other.

This book contains a short introduction to the culture of Pakistan, in the first part; moreover there is a complete review of the preservation policies in Pakistan, whereas the second part consists of a comparative analysis of the case studies, of the present trends of the conservation policies. Furthermore there is also a discussion of the laws of conservation of building heritage of Europe with that of Pakistan, a research is conducted to find the weaknesses in the present laws in Pakistan and suggestions are made for the amendment in preservation Polices. The architectural heritage conservation is in an unhealthy and deteriorating state in Pakistan. It is attributed mainly due to the ineffective laws and inefficient professionalism. Much of the improvement can be made by comparing the set of relevant Pakistani as well as European laws. There is a need for the modern professionals to conduct a very specific, climatically, culturally, and area specific research. The objective should be to propose such amendments that could help update firstly the present regulations, and secondly the existing conditions.

Lots of efforts have been made to make Pakistan a Polio free country for the last two decades, but, Pakistan struggle to be polio free country is not prolific. Pakistan health sector developed vigorous strategies for the eradication of polio in Pakistan, but value of all the strategies is only well documented pieces of paper in plan development due to ineffective implementation. The purpose of the study is identifying the potential factors that are influencing the implementation of polio program in Pakistan. Existing structure, Resistance to Change, Vested Interests and Organizational Culture were taken as independent variables for the effective implementation of the polio program in Pakistan. The regression result shows that there is great influence of the all variables like Existing structure, Resistance to Change, Vested Interests, and Organizational Culture. The result indicated that if the structure of the health sector becomes productive and supportive than the polio may automatically be eradicated from Pakistan.

Even though Pakistan has taken a zero-tolerance approach to ISIS, polling data suggests that support for ISIS within Pakistan hovers around 8%, while 62 per cent of Pakistani's said they 'don't know'; (representing over 120 million people) such a large percentage of 'don't knows' indicating a lack of familiarity with the issue; underlining the importance of religious education in Pakistan, as the line between Islam and violent extremism seems to be blurred in the country. Hence this book focuses on improving human rights-, ethical- and Islamic education in Pakistan; also in view that Pakistan's blasphemy laws carry a potential death sentence for anyone who insults Islam - Salman Taseer governor of Punjab, and Shahbaz Bhatti, minorities minister, both assassinated by extremists in 2011 for asking for the law to be reformed. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Pakistan, so that a just social peace can be manifested in the country.

This book has empirically investigated the impacts of Pakistan's demand management policies on foreign sector. The transmission mechanism between monetary policy and aggregate demand has been analyzed by using the monetary approach, which depicts that disequilibrium in the balance of payments is the result of domestic money market imbalance. Pakistan is the 27th largest economy of the world in terms of purchasing power parity. During 1970s and 1990s, economic performance of Pakistan remained poor due to nationalization of various sectors and macroeconomic mismanagement. Pakistan's economy became one of the four fastest growing economies in the South Asia during 2000-2007, which was the result of effective strategies of the monetary authorities. Presently, the economy is suffering due to poor law and order situation and nation's involvement in the War on Terrorism. The findings of the study are: government budget deficit has significant impact on money supply and increase in money supply has deteriorated the balance of payments proportionally during the period of 1965-99. These empirical findings have equal importance for academicians as well as economic managers of the country.

Pakistan constitutes a valuable case study for investigating the dynamics of persistently high rates of deficits. The budget and trade deficits occurred concurrently with acute macro economic imbalances and indebtedness, which is a major cause of concern. In Pakistan, little is known with authenticity, about the channels through which changes in these deficits percolate the macroeconomic system. Most of the studies conducted outside Pakistan, assert, some support for the maintained proposition that budget deficit, in so for lead to increase in money supply do cause inflation affects interest rates and trade deficit. But identification of the model, measurement and estimation, forecasting ability, applications of impulsive response functions and variance decompositions along with causality tests are still the matter of investigation. This book filled the gap by establishing the linkages of deficits with the macroeconomic variables of Pakistan economy in vector Autoregressive Model. The book therefore, provides extensive applications of VARMA and cointegration techniques. The book is highly recommendable for economists and graduate students.

'An urgent and extraordinary book. Weaving a philosophical analysis of Heidegger, Agamben and Foucault, Jan draws out the implications of their thought for a radical analysis of the ontological politics of Islam and Pakistan. Whether writing about the 'Ulama and Deoband schools, blasphemy laws, the military, beards, or the Bamiyan Buddhas, Jan provokes and challenges our thinking while unearthing the ground on which Pakistan—and our world—are built.' —Joel Wainwright, Department of Geography, Ohio State University, USA 'In this exceptionally inventive and important book, Jan shows us that the problems besetting political life in Pakistan are part of a more troubling crisis in modern forms of power. Challenging accounts that cordon off «political Islam» from «the West,» Jan discloses their fundamental indistinction and thus, through his practice of critical ontology, reorients our understanding of how power and violence are at work in the world.' —Joshua Barkan, Department of Geography, University of Georgia, USA The Metacolonial State presents a novel rethinking of the relationship between Islam and the Political. Key to the text is an original argument regarding the «biopoliticization of Islam» and the imperative need for understanding sovereign power and the state of exception in resolutely ontological terms. Through the formulation of a critical ontology of political violence, The Metacolonial State endeavors to shed new light on the signatures of power undergirding postcolonial life, while situating Pakistan as a paradigmatic site for reflection on the nature of modernity's precarious present. The cross-disciplinary approach of Dr. Jan's work is certain to have broad appeal among geographers, historians, anthropologists, postcolonial theorists, and political scientists, among others. At the same time, his explication of critical ontology – with its radical reading of the interlacement of history, power and the event – promises to add a bold new dimension to social science research on Islamism and biopolitics.

HRD in Pakistan, an analytical study is related with the current scenario of HR in Pakistan since existence to date. As no book is available on the topic as such, hence, it is unique book especially for advance studies in HRD for policy makers and planners. In spite of many efforts taken by the Govt Pakistan is lagging behind in this area. A panoramic history of Economic Development of Japan and other Asian Tigers is evident that Human capital occupies central position as compared to any other resource for social development. Pakistan’s track record in this field has never risen beyond a mere average. HRD is based on education, science and technological development; health, food, nutrition, hygienic condition and availability of clean drinking water; information technological development, vocational training and skill development; manpower planning; development in migration outflows and inflow of remittances; all these are itself explanatory and give the clear picture that Pakistan is far behind in all these areas of HRD. The monograph may be used in HR planning and guidance especially in Pakistan.

Human blood performs many important functions including defence against disease and transport of biomolecules, but perhaps the most important is to carry oxygen – the fundamental biochemical fuel – and other blood gases around the cardiovascular system. Traditional therapies for the impairment of this function, or the rapid replacement of lost blood, have centred around blood transfusions. However scientists are developing chemicals (oxygen therapeutics, or “blood substitutes”) which have the same oxygen-carrying capability as blood and can be used as replacements for blood transfusion or to treat diseases where oxygen transport is impaired. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Oxygen Therapeutics: From Transfusion to Artificial Blood links the underlying biochemical principles of the field with chemical and biotechnological innovations and pre-clinical development. The first part of the book deals with the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and toxicity of oxygen, including chapters on hemoglobin reactivity and regulation; the major cellular and physiological control mechanisms of blood flow and oxygen delivery; hemoglobin and myoglobin; nitric oxide and oxygen; and the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in ischemia/reperfusion Injury. The book then discusses medical needs for oxygen supply, including acute traumatic hemorrhage and anemia; diagnosis and treatment of haemorrhages in «non-surgical» patients; management of perioperative bleeding; oxygenation in the preterm neonate; ischemia normobaric and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for ischemic stroke and other neurological conditions; and transfusion therapy in β thalassemia and sickle cell disease Finally “old”and new strategies for oxygen supply are described. These include the political, administrative and logistic issues surrounding transfusion; conscientious objection in patient blood management; causes and consequences of red cell incompatibility; biochemistry of red blood cell storage; proteomic investigations on stored red blood cells; red blood cells from stem cells; the universal red blood cell; allosteric effectors of hemoglobin; hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers; oxygen delivery by natural and artificial oxygen carriers; cross-linked and polymerized hemoglobins as potential blood substitutes; design of novel pegylated hemoglobins as oxygen carrying plasma expanders; hb octamers by introduction of surface cysteines; hemoglobin-vesicles as a cellular type hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier; animal models and oxidative biomarkers to evaluate pre-clinical safety of extracellular hemoglobins; and academia – industry collaboration in blood substitute development. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Oxygen Therapeutics: From Transfusion to Artificial Blood is an essential reference for clinicians, haematologists, medicinal chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists and blood substitute researchers.

Not much is known about the Blood of Jesus today by Christians but it is a mighty arsenal weapon against the devil. There is life in the Blood of Jesus and none is in Satan. He is called Beelzebub, being interpreted; the lord of flies. Flies are attracted to dead things but the Blood of Jesus has life in it so the devil is repelled by it and cannot penetrate it.Many years ago, the word of God was revealed saying, "Make much of the Blood and the Blood will make much of you." For a while, Christians did make much of the Blood and as a result, many signs and wonders were seen. However, today there is not much that is said about the Blood. Has it lost its power? Certainly not, but we have lost knowledge of it and therefore, we haven't seen mighty acts of God as did the early disciples. But the time has come and now is for us to make full usage of this powerful weapon that God has given us.God's word does not change. What He said years ago, applies to us today and He said, "Make much of the Blood and the Blood will make much of you."

Although observers of the Pakistani economy are well aware that a small number of family groups, popularly called "the twenty-two families," dominates the industrial structure of the country, the actual effects of this concentration of economic power on income distribution and on other areas of widespread social and political concern arc less well understood. In this important work, Lawrence J. White uses the concepts of industrial organization analysis to achieve an overall view of the problems stemming from the marked industrial concentration in Pakistan. After discussing the economic effects of industrial concentration as they apply generally to less developed countries, Professor White reviews the Pakistani experience, estimating the overall concentration of power that exists in manufacturing, banking, and insurance. Following an estimate of the extent of concentration in individual markets, he examines the origins of this concentration of power and analyzes its economic and noneconomic effects in Pakistan. The author concludes with a review of the policies that Pakistan has pursued in dealing with industrial concentration and suggests new courses of action for the future.Originally published in 1974.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
