Marcia Burrell Mathematics Teacher Practices and the Impact of Computer Technology

This study investigated the effectiveness of technology innovation grants awarded to 55 secondary school mathematics teachers between 1997 and 2003. Although professional development resources often are allocated for integrating technology and for applying constructivist theory into the mathematics classroom, little is known about the return on these investments. The grant recipients were sorted into 3 groups, by the grant award date, and descriptive statistics was used to summarize the perceived impact of technology on constructivist statements. A 25-question mail-in survey instrument was used to gather information about teacher level of technology integration, teacher observations of students when using technology, the impact of technology on constructivist behaviors, and other demographic data related to years of teaching and courses taught. This study contributes to social change in professional development by providing a model to determine the efficacy of how funds allocated for instructional resources, instructional programming, the purchase and implementation of instructional technology and the allocation of resources to professional development programs.

Slava Kalyuga Instructional Guidance. A Cognitive Load Perspective

The book explores a cognitive load perspective on instructional guidance. Cognitive load theory is focusedon instructional design implications and prescriptions that flow from human cognitive architecture, and ithas become one of the leading theories of instructional design. According to this theoretical perspective, the purpose of instructional guidance is to reduce learner potential cognitive overload by providingappropriate information in the right time and in a suitable format. As the learner's level of prior knowledgeis considered as the main factor influencing this decision, the effect of learner prior knowledge oneffectiveness of instructional methods (the expertise reversal effect in cognitive load theory) provides thebasic framework for the book. The fully-guided explicit instruction and minimally-guided inquiry (discovery or exploratory) learning areoften discussed in instructional psychology literature as examples of approaches with opposed degrees ofguidance provided to the learners. This book considers the whole range of the levels of guidance (includingintermediate levels) and approaches the problem of balancing learner guidance from a cognitive loadperspective. The significance of this approach is in applying our current knowledge of human cognitivearchitecture to develop an integrated instructional approach bringing together the best features and advantages of explicit instruction and inquirylearning. Both explicit instruction and inquiry learning approaches ...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, , language: English, abstract: This study explores factors that affect instructional leaders' perception of the role of media in classroom teaching in Amhara region of Ethiopia. To achieve the objective a one sample survey method using questioner and focus group discussion was employed. The participants are 168 instructional leaders (108 principals & 60 supervisors) with different training, teaching and school leadership experience selected by convenience sampling. The two roles of media that are selected are media used as supplement and substitute for the teacher in classroom teaching. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were used to analyze the data gathered. The research answered seven research questions. The findings revealed that there were significant differences in perceptions of instructional leaders. Media training that they do have in the past contributed to some extent but neither experience in teaching nor in leadership has significant contribution for perception. The reasons behind instructional leaders' perception are mainly their belief that media has no or less impact on student motivation but traditional roles of teachers has some impact. The identified factors that affect perception are negative beliefs, irresponsibility, ignorance, lack of willingness and know-how. The study discusses the findings and makes some recommendations.

Brandford Bervell How to integrate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the Teaching of Social Studies

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: K-12, University of Cape Coast (Centre for Continuing Education), course: Information Technology in Social Studies, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTTechnology has become an imperative tool in teaching and learning, offering a constructive dimension to education. Its usage cuts across all disciplines and social studies is not an exception. In view of this, using a descriptive research design, this study investigated social studies teachers' perception of technology integration, their use of technology as well as the impact of technology integration training on their instructional practice in the senior high schools of the Cape Coast Metropolis. Data were collected through the use of a questionnaire from a purposive sample of 50 social studies teachers who have completed some form of technology integration training whether formal or informal.Participants ranged in age from 21 to 60, and had an average of 11 years of teaching experience. Social studies teachers in this study generally had a positive perception towards technology integration and the unparallel importance it brings to bare in the social studies classroom. However, they did not have the requisite competencies that will cushion their desire to tailor their instruction around technology, even though they have had some form of integration training. Since they lacked the requisite expertise in technology integration, they h...

Kevin D. Lafferty The Essentials of Surfing. The Authoritative Guide to Waves, Equipment, Etiquette, Safety, and Instructions for Surfriding

The Essentials of Surfing is a textbook for surfing. You can't learn to surf by reading a book, but The Essentials of Surfing will give you the knowledge you need to be more confident about learning to surf, avoid conflicts with other surfers, and diminish your chances of becoming a productive member of society. The Essentials of Surfing has useful information for surfers of all levels, but it does not cover advanced topics, like pulling aerials, conquering big waves, or tube riding, nor does it teach other sports like bodysurfing, kitesurfing, or carsurfing. The Essentials of Surfing starts out by describing waves, the main resource of surfing. It then lists the many types of surfboards you will see in the water, explaining which ones work best for learning and how to care for your own board. You'll also get advice on what to wear in the water to protect you from sun, rashes, and the cold. Most importantly, The Essentials of Surfing lists the informal rules of surfing to help you get along with other surfers in the line up. Surfing is not as dangerous as driving to the beach, but The Essentials of Surfing outlines common hazards and how you can protect yourself from them. If this doesn't put you off, you can read a step-by-step lesson in surfing your first wave. The Essentials of Surfing then gives general advice on how to advance beyond the beginner level. A glossary at the end lists some technical jargon and slang specific to surfing. Read straight through to g...

Secondly, college teachers in general rely on their knowledge of subject matter of their field of specialization alone for effective teaching. It is so because of giving blind eye to pedagogical methods and their importance in making teaching effective. The fact 'how' something is said is equally important as 'what' is said, is ignored. Therefore, for avoiding the defeat of a teacher such training as this one on instructional technology are of immense importance. New Directions in Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Research. Multiple Perspectives

In the past decades wide-ranging research on effective integration of technology in instruction have beenconducted by various educators and researchers with the hope that the affordances of technology might beleveraged to improve the teaching and learning process. However, in order to put the technology in optimumuse, knowledge about how and in what way technology can enhance the instruction is also essential. Anumber of theories and models have been proposed in harnessing the technology in everyday lessons. Amongthese attempts Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework introduced by Mishraand Koehler has emerged as a representation of the complex relationships between technology, pedagogy andcontent knowledge. The TPACK framework extends the concept of Shulman's pedagogical contentknowledge (PCK) which defines the need for knowledge about the content and pedagogical skills in teachingactivities. Since then the framework has been embraced by the educational technology practitioners, instructional designers, and educators. TPACK research received increasing attention from education andtraining community covering diverse range of subjects and academic disciplines and significant progress has been made in recent years. This bookattempts to bring the practitioners and researchers to present current directions, trends and approaches, convey experience and findings, and sharereflection and vision to improve science teaching and learning with the use of TPACK f...
