Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution addresses the public health aspects of drinking water treatment and distribution. It explains the different water treatment processes, such as pretreatment, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and their impacts on waterborne microbial pathogens and parasites. Drinking water quality may be degraded in water distribution systems—microorganisms form biofilms within distribution systems that allow them to flourish. Various methodologies have been proposed to assess the bacterial growth potential in water distribution systems. Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution also places drinking water quality and public health issues in context; it addresses the effect of bioterrorism on drinking water safety, particularly safeguards that are in place to protect consumers against the microbial agents involved. In addition, the text delves into research on drinking water quality in developing countries and the low-cost treatment technologies that could save lives. The text also examines the microbiological water quality of bottled water, often misunderstood by the public at large.

Water is an essential resource for human life. However, more than 1.2 billion people still do not have access to safe drinking water. Microbiological contamination is the primary cause of disease outbreaks with drinking water. This book presents research work, undertaken to determine the disinfection efficiency of ozone. Inactivation of pure and mixed culture of E. coli and Salmonella, inoculated in distilled water and drinking water samples was conducted under controlled environmental conditions such as pH, temperature, ozone dose and contact time to study their effects on disinfection efficiency of ozone. It is evident from the results that the disinfection is a rate process and is dependent upon the rates of reaction between the disinfectant and the microorganisms in water. Ozone disinfection efficiency was found to be higher at low pH and high temperature range. The book is especially useful to students and professionals dealing with drinking water disinfection technology or anyone else interested to study about the pathogens in drinking water.

Deka Gitimoni, Bhattacharyya Krishna Gopal Impacts of a Textile Mill on Water and Soil Quality

This work investigates the impacts of the effluents and other wastes of a Textile Mill on quality of soil and water in the surrounding areas. Some specific impacts on soil and water quality have been identified. For example, the soil was getting enriched with both ionic matter and hydrophobic organic matter, which had important consequences. The soil became enriched with the trace metals, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The quality of the drinking water in and around the textile mill did reflect the changes in the physico-chemical quality of the soil. The water was characterized by considerable presence of the cations, Ca, Mg, Na and K, being compensated by comparative presence of the anions, Cl, NO3 and SO4. The toxic organic contaminant, phenol, was present in some of the drinking water sources. The water was contaminated with Mn, Ni, and Pb, and also fluoride. The rice crop grown in the study area had accumulated appreciable amounts of metals in them as seen from the analysis of rice grains and husks. Significantly, the husks were seen to be richer in the metals than the grains with one or two exceptions.

Water is the most abundant and widely distributed compound on earth. Although in its natural state this compound remains in the purest form, but it is very difficult to find a source of water that has not been disturbed by man. The World Health Organization has estimated that up to 80% of all sickness and disease in the world is caused by inadequate sanitation, polluted water or unavailability of portable water. The incidence of water-borne diseases, such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery and diarrhoeal diseases can be drastically reduced by providing safe drinking water to the people. To get rid from suspended biological agents and to ensure the supply of pure drinking water, the public health sanitarians stress upon the need prior treatment or purified before consumption. The book therefore provides knowledge on comparative public health implication associated with rural and urban communities, awareness towards the waterborne diseases and emphasize on to demonstrate the evidence of interrelatedness between bacteriological qualities of domestic water supply, practice of sanitation, formulate and suggest intervention activities to minimize microbial contaminants in water supply.

Groundwater is the most important source of fresh water supply for drinking all over the world. Groundwater samples from different location of Jhenaidaha Municipality have been analyzed to assess the chemical composition, source rock and quality. The parameter analyzed for the research are pH, TDS, EC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3-, SO42-, PO43-, H4SiO4 and NO2-N. The analysis reveals that the cations and anions of the water shows the order of dominance as Ca2+>Mg2+> Na+>K+ and HCO3->Cl->SO42- respectively. The Na+/ (Na++Ca2+) weight ratio against TDS illustrates that the water is derived mainly from rock weathering; however few samples suggest dominance of evaporation crystallization process. Deduction of source rock demonstrates that carbonate weathering and cation exchange is predominant in almost all over the study area. Piper diagram indicates that the water is rich in Ca2+ + Mg2+ and HCO3- (temporary hard) in the study area. This study reveals that the water quality of shallow aquifers in Jhenaidaha Municipality is quite satisfactory and meets the drinking water standard of Bangladesh and WHO.

Water is known to be a fundamental element of all forms of life. It is commonly used as solvent, for drinking, for cleaning purposes and various other ways. Needless to say, it has to be clean water. Water pollution on the other hand, decreases the water's usefulness economically and aesthetically. When water becomes polluted, it brings danger to our health and to the other living things. The most serious effects of water pollution are infectious diseases, which commonly occur in developing countries, where there is a problem with sanitation. Water-borne diseases occurs when microscopic causal organisms spread through water body,90% of the world diseases are cause due to water contamination. Groundwater and Surface-Water Interactions: As development of land and water resources increases, it is apparent that development of either of these resources affects quantity and quality of the other. Nearly all surface- water features interacts with groundwater. These interactions take many forms. In many situations, surface water bodies gain water and solutes from ground water system and in others the surface water is a source of ground water recharge and cause changes in ground water

In this instance, as it currently stands the organisation under examination is operating two major units: A business unit and an educational unit. This is reflected in the current method of organisational evaluation as shown throughout this research, with the use of two separate evaluation methods: the Baldrige Educational Performance Excellence Criteria and New Zealand Educational Authority's required Six Tertiary Evaluation Indicators. Through the development of a single evaluation tool the needs of the 'whole' organisation can be determined, which will aid in the deployment of resources and innovation to ensure the whole organisation benefits. Presently from the information obtained through the two separate evaluation methods, innovation and advancement made in one unit will have adverse effects on another.

In this study, the concentrations of five heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe) were determined in raw water, sediments and in aquatic macrophytes from selected sites at the Barekese reservoir in Ghana between the periods of June 2011 and January 2012. The obtained results showed that the mean concentration ranges for lead (0.04-0.25 mg/L) and iron (0.49-0.89 mg/L) in the reservoir water exceeded the WHO guideline values of 0.01mg/L and 0.30mg/L respectively for drinking water. The reservoir water was thus concluded as unfit for drinking except after adequate treatment. Comparison of the levels of heavy metals in sediments with the Numerical Sediment Quality Guidelines values showed the sediments as heavily polluted with lead and copper at certain sites of the reservoir. Good information were also provided by analysis of whole plants and organs of passive aquatic macrophytes (Typha domingensis, Ceratophyllum demersum, Pistia stratiotes and Lemna paucicostata). Metals in the plant species were higher in roots than shoots. The mean heavy metal concentrations in all the water, sediments and macrophytes were observed in the sequence; Fe > Cu > Mn > Pb > Zn.

Participatory Evaluation Up Close. An Integration of Research-Based Knowledge

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domainsof inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge basebeen infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fillthis void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that isreceiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework forparticipatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base inparticipatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodologicalconsiderations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn fromtheir own research program. The book concludes in Part 4 with implications for moving the field forward in terms of important research questions, methodological direction and evaluation practice. This book will be of central interest to evaluation theorists and to those who choose to conduct research on evaluation; appeal will...

This issue focuses on connections between performance management and evaluation, a contentious topic at the moment. It does so by placing evaluation and monitoring under the overarching concept of performance management, and then by investigating five complementarities between performance monitoring and measurement on the one hand, and evaluation on the other. These complementarities are: Sequential Informational Organizational Methodical Hierarchical. Several case studies discuss the uses and complementarities of evaluation and performance management in contexts including national and local governments and the work of government, philanthropic foundations, and a direct-service nonprofit agency. These cases illustrate the advantages and pitfalls in utilizing evaluative approaches within the context of performance management. The Future of Evaluation in Society. A Tribute to Michael Scriven

The impetus for this volume lives in a rich and vibrant past. It is organized to honor one of thefounders and most prolific contributors to the professional and transdiscipline of evaluation --Professor Michael Scriven, and to illuminate the future of evaluation in society. Professor Scrivenoften shares stories of his meetings with Albert Einsten and the frame-breaking evaluation revolutionhe has led against the value free doctrine of the social sciences. Both his wide eyed graduatestudents and the more grizzled evaluation veterans in his professional development workshopsquickly learn that Scriven is well traveled and has exchanged some of the boldest ideas and visions with the most brilliant thinkers ofhis time. Scriven insisted that the 2011 Stauffer Symposium and this volume be organized in that genre. He urged us to invite the mostthoughtful and influential evaluation theorists and practitioners we could find to join him in a conversation about the future of evaluationin society.Scriven challenges us to examine the five great paradigm shifts that have revolutionized the foundations of evaluation, and that hebelieves will form the basis for a much brighter future for evaluation in society. Scriven's revolutionary ideas are followed and challengedby a group of thought leaders in evaluation who do not necessarily shared his views on evaluation, but who have earned hisdeepest respect and whose evaluation work he admires including Michael Quinn Patton, Ernest House, Danie...

Cost effective Analysis is the main tool used in arriving at the preferred policy option. , abstract: The axiom "water is life and life is water" underscores the importance of water to the everyday needs of all living things including man. The global perspective on access to safe drinking water for both domestic and agriculture needs has for some time now been a major challenge. The WHO estimates that nearly 3.4 million people die annually as a result of water and sanitation related diseases and about 99 percent of this number is from developing countries. About 780 million people lack access to potable drinking water that is one in every nine people. Women spend almost 200 million hours daily collecting water for domestic chores. These findings are jaw-dropping. Ghana, as a developing country with an estimated population of 23 million is faced with these same challenges. Incidence of water related diseases have been prevalent in most rural communities in Ghana. Background check shows that Ghana's...

As pedagogy is the study of teaching, pedagogy of evaluation examines how and what evaluation teaches. This volume is inspired by the works of Paulo Freire who believed that all interactions between people are pedagogical: something is always being taught, conveyed, and proselytized (the same could be said of evaluation). Freirean principles, though articulated nearly 50 years ago, offer and affirm future directions for dealing with inequality, poverty, social injustice, community development, education, and, to the point here, evaluation. The principles remain fresh and timely, and new. Divided into three parts, the editors invite you to use Freire?s works to reflect on your pedagogy of evaluation. Contemporaries of Paulo Freire present his pedagogy Pedagogical principles of evaluation derived from Freire Freire?s current evaluation influence illustrated This is the 155th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. Norm Wolford The Wine of My Life

What is it all about? What is wine made from? What is in it? What are we drinking? One substance makes up 80 percent of every single bottle of wine. Can you guess what that 80 percent is? It is not grapes. It is not sugar. It’s water! In fact, all manufactured beverages are in the neighborhood of 80 percent water. This is one of the very basics: that wine uses water as a carrier as the base. Of course, we too are made up of 75 percent 80 percent water! Let us clarify; wine makers do not add water to the wine they make to reach 80 percent. This is simply the natural proportion of water in wine. Choose a single grape, and that grape is 75 percent to 85 percent water. Therefore, that is where it begins. There’s no water added; it just comes naturally with the grape. The nature of water itself is another whole story, but it is true that water is colorless and odorless. It can be in three states: liquid, gas, and solid. The atom of water is so unique and is one of the strongest of the atoms. It takes so much energy to be able to break it apart. Water is life itself, and water is the first and the most basic aspect of wine.

Anyona Douglas Mara River Water Quality. The Anthropogenic Factor

Rivers are open dynamic ecosystems whose water quality is greatly influenced by anthropogenic activities. A number of rivers including the world renowned Mara River flow through urbanized areas and are highly prone to pollution. Owing to poor infrastructure within the Mara River basin, the bulk of the waste generated is often left in the open and eventually finds its way into the river resulting in water quality degradation. Altering the Mara River ecosystem can disrupt the annual wildebeest migration spectacle while polluted water poses a risk of waterborne diseases to local inhabitants. While a single water quality parameter can provide a snapshot of the condition of a river, it may not give an integral measure of the health of the river. This book presents an integrative approach to water quality assessment through collective determination of several water quality parameters namely: physical, chemical, biological and microbial parameters to give an accurate measure of the overall health of the Mara River. The book is important to water resource managers, environmentalists, conservationists, policy makers, local authorities, government and the general public.

Evaluation has played a fundamental role throughout the history of higher education. It has been key to institutional missions and for accountability concerns for public funding policy and fiscal oversight. In the last 30 years, there has been focused attention on the quality of education and student learning. Campuses have stepped up their initiatives to evaluate educational outcomes—and communicate these to their constituencies—just as regional, state, and national efforts have emerged regarding assessment of learning outcomes. In this context, various methods and approaches to evaluative inquiry have emerged to support efforts to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of instructional practice and curriculum for higher learning. This edition examines perspectives on evaluation studies addressing higher education learning—from program- to institution-based studies and critiques of practice—to document successes and identify significant challenges that face evaluators and the collaborating educators in the continuing development of higher education. This examination represents both an investigation into the particular insights that evaluative inquiry contributes to the scholarship and practice of higher education and a reflection on the evaluation expertise that can be applied across contexts of professional practice and program development. This is the 151st issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Seventy five percent of Africa's drinking water comes from surface and groundwater and is often used with little or no purification, so they took as it is, or simply leave it to settle to remove sediments. It is therefore essential to provide low-cost methods to treat their water at the household level using household water disinfectant chemicals. Using of these chemical disinfectants is proven to reduce disease burden that arise due to unsafe drinking water. Experimental based method was used to assess the efficacy of household water disinfectant chemicals by comparison of the free residual chlorine of all the three chemicals after 30 minutes and 24 hour. The level of disinfection byproducts that are produced while using these chemicals for household water treatment is also addressed in this study. The overall laboratory experiments were conducted at different water turbidities that ranged from 7-60 NTU.
