Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Comparative Literature, Free University of Berlin, course: Independent Study, language: English, abstract: A kaleidoscope of New York City in terms of gender is created through an elaborate scholarly investigation as contemporary popular forms are considered across various media. By analysis of spatial categories, it explores the post 9/11 imagination of the metropolis in light of an inherent logic of consumer culture with a focus on women's views. Shaping an awareness of female voices as arguably characteristic of the postmodern cityscape, the essay aims to serve as an impulse in support of new ideas in feminist urban art politics.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Cultural Studies - Basics and Definitions, grade: A, Ewha Womans University (Graduate School of International Studies), course: Comparative Society and Culture , 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with three of the original six different topics about spatial locations. Namely, Maps, Nations and Regions and Spatial Segregation. The whole analysis refers solely to three countries: the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Ecuador. Nevertheless, following the example of Carol Delany in her book "Investigating Culture", the most important and most specific examples of these topics of spatial locations within these countries will be given - focusing on concrete examples. The aim of this term paper is to analyze the three countries from three different continents regarding their specific understandings of their map, their nation(s), their region, and spatial segregation inside the country. Thus, one can say that the content of this work refers to the historical part of space / spatial locations within these countries. After an introduction, in the main part, beginning with the description of the countries' maps the analysis starts with the actual situation of the countries' borders, meaning how these countries are geographically located in the world community and how they see themselves there today. Following, an analysis of the creation of the...

This book provides an introduction to spatial analyses concerning disaggregated (or micro) spatial data. Particular emphasis is put on spatial data compilation and the structuring of the connections between the observations. Descriptive analysis methods of spatial data are presented in order to identify and measure the spatial, global and local dependency. The authors then focus on autoregressive spatial models, to control the problem of spatial dependency between the residues of a basic linear statistical model, thereby contravening one of the basic hypotheses of the ordinary least squares approach. This book is a popularized reference for students looking to work with spatialized data, but who do not have the advanced statistical theoretical basics.

A spatial-temporal database is a database that embodies spatial, temporal, and spatial-temporal database concepts and captures simultaneously spatial and temporal aspects of data. It deals with geometries that change with time. Constraint databases can be used as a common language layer that makes the interoperability of different temporal, spatial and spatial-temporal databases possible. The book provides following aspects: • The positions of moving objects are continuously changing over time. • For modelling these moving objects, consider both continuous and discrete models. • Using the different objects moving in the static region • The topological relation applies in the object section. • Apply the moving object in the different environment. • The moving region comparative analysis applied to volcanoes.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: EP, , course: Doctor of Philosophy, language: English, abstract: The present paper investigates the effect of Western religion on governance, policies, and politics, within both the domestic and the global contexts. This question, however, leads into the need for deep ideological analysis. The paper thus defines the concept of Western religion, and then proceeds to show how Western religion is inseparable from Western civilization, including modern values which are often called secular but which, in fact, have ideological roots that can be traced to Western religion. Over the course of this analysis, an opposition emerges between Western religion on the one hand and secular progressivism on the other-the latter of which is both derived from and antagonistic toward Western religion. The contours of this ideological conflict and their implications are explored through the development of a comprehensive theoretical framework. The independent research of the present paper consists of an interview with a selected congressman. The interview seeks to delve into the congressman's views regarding Western religion and its effects on governance, policies, and politics. This data is analyzed using a qualitative method. Finally, the present paper analyzes and discusses the statements of the congressman in the interview in light of the p...

Spatial reasoning tests are widely used during selection processes which require an ability to use practical and visual skills. They are more common in jobs such as engineering and driving roles but are also more and more being utilised on medical and science roles. Spatial reasoning, or ability as it is sometimes called, involves the candidate visualising and then manipulating different complex shapes and patterns. Competence in spatial awareness is said to be mostly inherited; however, tests have proven that your ability in this type of test can be greatly improved with targeted practice. This book will provide you with over 230 pages of sample spatial reasoning test questions and answers to help you prepare thoroughly for the tests.

Interdisciplinarity is a key concept, because Geographic Information Science, Operations Research and Spatial Decision Support Systems are bundled together. Service Oriented Architectures allow the development of an architecture that consists of several - even spatial - dispersed hard- and software. This approach guarantees a fail safe architecture and paves the way for Ubiquitous Computing and Spatial Data Infrastructures. In addition, spatial data can be gathered and sent out in real-time from/to mobile devices utilizing Location based Services. The dissertation proves, that a specific spatial problem can be solved using mathematical modeling and an appropriate optimization technique. In this work Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search is used. By the fact that the optimization is enveloped in a Spatial Decision Support System, decision makers are involved in the decision process. On the one hand they are able to alter model parameters which alter the optimization process at hand, and on the other hand they can choose one decision alternative recommended by the sys...

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: A, London School of Economics, course: Urban studies, language: English, abstract: "Mistakes were certainly made. The private banks failed, the supervisory system failed, the politics failed, the administration failed, the media failed, and the ideology of an unregulated free market utterly failed. This has called for a fundamental review of many elements of our society. In that respect, democracy, the rule of law and close international cooperation has been and will continue to be our strongest weapons" Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir reflecting on the Icelandic economic collapse, 12 April 2010.The neoliberal experiment which was undertaken in Iceland, from the 1990s up to the financial collapse of 2008, generated unprecedented inequality not just in the country's income distribution (Olafsson & Kristjansdóttir 2010) but in the built environment as well. This paper outlines the spatial inequality that has emerged in the city of Reykjavík and its political, economic, cultural context. Different urban artifacts are examined through Sennett's concept of Open City, which gives us the instrument to value their spatial definition. Finally we ask ourselves whether the political revolution that followed the economic meltdown has produced signs of change in our city.

In the spatial or spatio-temporal context, specifying the correct covariance function is fundamental to obtain efficient predictions, and to understand the underlying physical process of interest. This book focuses on covariance and variogram functions, their role in prediction, and appropriate choice of these functions in applications. Both recent and more established methods are illustrated to assess many common assumptions on these functions, such as, isotropy, separability, symmetry, and intrinsic correlation. After an extensive introduction to spatial methodology, the book details the effects of common covariance assumptions and addresses methods to assess the appropriateness of such assumptions for various data structures. Key features: An extensive introduction to spatial methodology including a survey of spatial covariance functions and their use in spatial prediction (kriging) is given. Explores methodology for assessing the appropriateness of assumptions on covariance functions in the spatial, spatio-temporal, multivariate spatial, and point pattern settings. Provides illustrations of all methods based on data and simulation experiments to demonstrate all methodology and guide to proper usage of all methods. Presents a brief survey of spatial and spatio-temporal models, highlighting the Gaussian case and the binary data setting, along with the different methodologies for estimation and model fitting for these two data structures. Discusses models that allow for anisotropic and nonseparable behaviour in covariance functions in the spatial, spatio-temporal and multivariate settings. Gives an introduction to point pattern models, including testing for randomness, and fitting regular and clustered point patterns. The importance and assessment of isotropy of point patterns is detailed. Statisticians, researchers, and data analysts working with spatial and space-time data will benefit from this book as well as will graduate students with a background in basic statistics following courses in engineering, quantitative ecology or atmospheric science.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 24.0, Lancaster University, course: Politics and International Relations, language: English, abstract: This report differs from previous studies of Sino-African relations, for one the paper successfully theorizes the relations and demonstrates that studying the relationship must be carried out based on China and individual countries, rather than China and Africa as a continent. And secondly, the core purpose of this paper is understanding how China interacts with African countries, and understanding the basic elements inherent in their interactions. This research presents a holistic study of Sino-African relations with the case studies of Nigeria and Sudan, with a focus on the three factors of politics, economics, and socio-environmental implications. Framing the paper in this manner allows the researcher to develop a theory for the study, and allows for the critical development of literature that helps to explain if the relations contains elements of neo-imperialism, or if indeed, the economic interaction is one that can be described as a win-win. Basically, this paper seeks to use literature to establish Sino-African relations as neo-colonial or neo-imperial, or as a win-win South-South cooperation.

This book addresses the field of geographic information extraction and retrieval from textual documents. Geographic information retrieval is a rapidly emerging subject, a trend fostered by the growing power of the Internet and the emerging possibilities of data dissemination. After positioning his work in this field in Chapter 1, the author makes proposals in the following two chapters. Chapter 2 focuses on spatial and temporal information indexing and retrieval in corpora of textual documents. Propositions for both spatial and temporal information retrieval (IR) are made. Chapter 3 tackles the use of generalized spatial and temporal indexes, which are produced from there in the framework of multi-criteria IR. Geographic IR (GIR) is discussed at length, since this IR combines the criteria of spatial, temporal and thematic research. The author provides a rich bibliographical study of the current approaches focused on the modeling and retrieval of spatial and temporal information in textual documents, and similarity measures developed thus far in the literature. The book concludes with a broad perspective of the remaining scientific challenges. Several areas of research are discussed, such as integration of a domain-based ontology, modeling of spatial footprints from the interpretation of spatial relation, and parsing of relations between features deemed relevant within a document resulting from a GIR process. Contents Foreword, Christophe Claramunt. 1. Access by Geographic Content to Textual Corpora: What Orientations ? 2. Spatial and Temporal Information Retrieval in Textual Corpora. 3. Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: A, Charles University in Prague, language: English, abstract: This work estimates the reform determinants for 24 transition countries using spatial econometric by maximum likelihood estimation. In the paper, determinants already used by other authors are included, as well as two new variables - export and foreign direct investments measures. Another distinctive characteristic is inclusion of spatial endogenous and exogenous variables as explanatory variables through the use of weights matrix - W. Spatial interaction is reflected by scoping on the importance of distance and informational spillovers. Obtained spatial interaction is positive and high in value. Coefficient rho varying in the range 0.22 to 0.71 indicates that in open economy countries adopt success and failure of reforming in neighboring countries. From spatial exogenous coefficients I obtained significant democracy, inflation, export and FDI coefficients. It gives idea that processes occurring in one country: level of investments, quality of democracy and level of domestic production is affecting and stimulating reforming in countries under similar economic or geopolitical status. I also found that the initial effect of GDP growth, FDI and democracy are important determiners of reforming process.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Spatial Justice and Diaspora brings the concept of spatial justice into conversation with empirical studies of racism and displacement, challenging and extending critical discussions of place, socio-spatiality, identities, and the juridico-political order. The volume brings together work exploring the conceptual and practical meaning of diaspora through a broad range of grounded studies, ranging from Palestinian street protest in Chile, to poetry written in Guantanamo Bay, to everyday practices of Ethiopian homemaking in Sweden. In so doing, it adds to theoretical explorations of spatial justice a keen attentiveness to lived experiences of the local, while also questioning any romanticized or essentialist reading of diaspora. Bringing to the fore innovative interdisciplinary scholarship, Spatial Justice and Diaspora offers a new critical intervention at the intersection of these fields.

Rendering High Dynamic Range (HDR) scenes on media with limited dynamic range began in the Renaissance whereby painters, then photographers, learned to use low-range spatial techniques to synthesize appearances, rather than to reproduce accurately the light from scenes. The Art and Science of HDR Imaging presents a unique scientific HDR approach derived from artists’ understanding of painting, emphasizing spatial information in electronic imaging. Human visual appearance and reproduction rendition of the HDR world requires spatial-image processing to overcome the veiling glare limits of optical imaging, in eyes and in cameras. Illustrated in full colour throughout, including examples of fine-art paintings, HDR photography, and multiple exposure scenes; this book uses techniques to study the HDR properties of entire scenes, and measures the range of light of scenes and the range that cameras capture. It describes how electronic image processing has been used to render HDR scenes since 1967, and examines the great variety of HDR algorithms used today. Showing how spatial processes can mimic vision, and render scenes as artists do, the book also: Gives the history of HDR from artists' spatial techniques to scientific image processing Measures and describes the limits of HDR scenes, HDR camera images, and the range of HDR appearances Offers a unique review of the entire family of Retinex image processing algorithms Describes the considerable overlap of HDR and Color Constancy: two sides of the same coin Explains the advantages of algorithms that replicate human vision in the processing of HDR scenes Provides extensive data to test algorithms and models of vision on an accompanying website www.wiley.com/go/mccannhdr
