Revamp senior administration organization for more effective governance Governance Reconsidered: How Boards, Presidents, Administrators, and Faculty Can Help Their Colleges Thrive takes an in-depth look at the current practice of governance in higher education and explores solutions for more effective functioning. Written by a former college president, the book provides an insider's perspective on the growing tensions around the traditional shared governance model and identifies the key challenges facing trustees, presidents, senior administrators, and faculty. Traditional shared governance operations are typically time-consuming, process-laden, and slow to respond to the internal and external forces acting upon modern educational institutions. Higher education is facing increasing political and economic pressure, and senior administration frequently needs the flexibility to make institutional decisions quickly. Using recent public scandals as examples, Governance Reconsidered illustrates how the tension between the need for timely decisions and action versus the importance of mission and academic quality is creating a dramatic systemic problem. The book provides practical advice on the issues at the heart of the matter, including: The nature and pace of change on campus, including the pressures facing higher education Clarity about the roles and responsibilities of trustees, the president, and the faculty The campus community's role in decision-making activities How thriving universities can govern collaboratively The book also addresses the brand new challenges that affect higher education governance, including MOOCs, online learning, and rising questions about value and cost. Campus leaders must work together effectively to boost higher education, and Governance Reconsidered contains the questions and answers integral to implementing effective governance.

Natural evolution is the changing in systems to adapt to environmental changes and it is enabled by the structural learning coupling between the systems. The structural coupling between the economic-, social- and ecological system, however, is not strong enough, because it seems that the overall system of "life on planet Earth" is not sustainable in the long-term. To strengthen the structural coupling between the economic-, social- and ecological systems a man-made structural learning coupling could be implemented. This additonal structural coupling could be enabled by the new information and communication technology. The Internet could deliver a world-wide structural learning coupling by the use of self-organizing virtual enterprises.

Not so long ago, all a student studying human evolution needed was a familiarity with the relatively sparse fossil record and what limited information there was about the context of the sites, a basic knowledge of gross anatomy and archeology, and an understanding of simple analytical methods. Times have changed. The fossil record has grown exponentially, imaging techniques have advanced dramatically, quantitative methods have burgeoned, and molecular biology has revolutionized our understanding of genetics, evolutionary history, and development. Added to this are advances in the archeological, biological, and earth sciences that help interpret the context of the fossil evidence and reconstruct behavior. But presently there is nowhere students of human evolution cna easily find out about topics as disparate as ameloblast, Coopers Cave, daily secretion rate, the effect hypothesis, homeobox genes, insolation, phylogenetically independent contrasts, quantitative trait locus, semicircular canals, and tephrostratigraphy. The Wiley Blackwell Student Dictionary of Human Evolution contains upwards of 2500 entries, all drafted with an eye on the student user. James Baldwin Hero Tales by James Baldwin, Fiction, Classics, Literary, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Legends & Mythology

The author of Hero Tales is James Baldwin, a self-educated pioneer of American education, born in 1841 in Indiana. Although he never attended school himself, Baldwin founded a public high school, the first school library, and a school district in his native Indiana. During the latter part of his career, he was an editor and author of school textbooks, first for Harper & Brothers, and then for the American Book Company. So prolific was Baldwin as an author and editor, it was said that at one point in time, half of all the books in American schools were either written or edited by him. Baldwin's literary legacy may have been forgotten today in the rush to substitute multiculturalism for more traditional tales taught and enjoyed in previous years. Baldwin re-told classic heroic tales for their interest to young students -- the Song of Roland, the Iliad, and the Nibelungenlied.

Steven Hawkins The Mechanisms of Evolution. A Critique of the Neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis

Do we understand how evolution works? In this book Steven Hawkins outlines various possible mechanisms of biological evolution - the Neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis, Symbiogenesis and Developmental Systems Theory. He contrasts and compares these various theories and proposes a view of evolution in which all three mechanisms have a role to play. In this schema 'natural selection' only has a minor role to play in biological evolution. In the final chapter Hawkins considers non-biological evolution and is drawn to conclude that we are unable to understand the fundamental nature of both non-biological evolution and biological evolution.

Instructional designers understand how people learn best. Their expertise is deployed to build learning experiences that enable rapid and deep absorption of new knowledge or assimilation of previously-absorbed facts. Traditional instructional design (ID), however, tends to go only half of the way because it emphasizes placing the instructor in the driver's seat. Now, in #SUCCESSFUL CORPORATE LEARNING tweet Book03: Instructional Design for Today's Professionals (#SCL tweet Book03), authors Vicki Halsey, S. Chris Edmonds, and Mitchell Levy take ID to its logical pinnacle with their meticulously-conceived Brilliance Learning System, predicated on putting the learner first. The Brilliance Learning System trains corporate leaders to craft learning experiences that build knowledge and skills. This approach creates deep learning that gets retained for the long term and results in engaged, committed, and active learners who are eager and ready to put their new skills into action. The learner-centric foundation outlined in #SCL tweet Book03 requires instructors to aid and enable learners at every turn. The book's authors approach the model from several angles, creating bite-sized wisdom that is easy to incorporate with immediate effect. Exploring Cultural Dynamics and Tensions Within Service-Learning

Service-learning is an exciting pedagogy and field of study, offering insight into how academic study andcommunity engagement blend to create social change. In its most traditional conceptualization, servicelearningactivities typically manifest within communities where outside individuals address a need. Servicelearningis purported to have a transforming effect on individual student perspectives by providing studentsthe opportunity to interact with people and enter into situations that allow students to test their predispositiontowards others. However, the literature on the impact of service-learning on participants' acceptance ofdiversity and development of open-mindedness reports mixed outcomes. The purpose of this book is to explore cultural tensions and dynamics within the field of service-learning. It isnot meant to be an exhaustive review of the interplay between culture and service learning, but rather a starting point for an ongoing conversationabout how this complex topic impacts the field. In 18 chapters, educators, students, and administrators investigate the cultural values of servicelearningitself and the tensions created when this is at odds with the values of others within K-12 and higher education in the United States and abroad.Authors include community organization representatives, researchers, directors of offices of community engagement, university administrators, juniorand senior faculty, and former service-learning undergraduate students. Naidoo Indira Invitational Attitude of Teachers

The aim of this study was to establish the effect of the invitational attitude of teachers on the culture of teaching and learning. This entailed a detailed literature study on the invitational attitude of teachers and its effect on the culture of teaching and learning at schools. South African education is presently facing major challenges. It is widely recognised that it is essential to transform the apartheid-based system of the past into an egalitarian one. There were imbalances and inequalities amongst separate education departments. The blacks were the most disadvantaged. For the purpose of the empirical investigation a prepared questionnaire was administered to 300 grade 12 learners of six secondary schools. The data obtained from the completed questionnaire were processed and analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. From the empirical investigation it was concluded that the quality of an education system is more dependent on the attitude of the teachers than any other single factor. The absence of a culture of teaching and learning in schools can be reversed by the inviting attitude of the teachers.

Robert E MacLaren Learning and Teaching in Human Anatomy

Modern medical school human anatomy teaching frequently leads to students adopting surface learning approaches, such a memorizing lists of structures through mnemonics. This can be avoided by situating anatomy within the domains of evolution, embryology or clinical medicine, which provide understanding and application in ways that encourage deep learning approaches. Examinations in anatomy can also be structured to reward higher learning outcomes through the Biggs and Collis model of 'SOLO Taxonomy'. This book summarises the author's personal experiences of applying current theories in educational research to develop more advanced anatomy teaching methods and would be relevant for teachers of anatomy across a variety of disciplines.

Sultan Albareghi Using a bilingual electronic dictionary to improve vocabulary learning for secondary school students of English as a foreign language (EFL)

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: The aim of this evidence-based study is to investigate the use of the bilingual electronic dictionary strategy to improve EFL/ESL secondary school students` vocabulary learning. Three aspects have been studied in depth: the effect of using the electronic bilingual dictionary strategy on improving EFL students' vocabulary learning, the attitudes of the students and the teachers towards the target strategy, and the students` ability to use the bilingual electronic dictionary. The findings of this study indicate that the bilingual electronic dictionary has a positive and an effective role in the process of vocabulary learning. Moreover, the students show positive attitudes towards using the bilingual electronic dictionary. Nevertheless, instructors may show negative attitudes towards the target strategy for certain reasons . The analysis of data further revealed that the critical point that affects the evaluation of the target strategy is the ability to use the electronic dictionary. If the students and teachers are not able to use the bilingual electronic dictionary, they may show negative attitudes towards it and the strategy will then be useless. Thus, the study suggests some recommendations for using the target strategy effectively for EFL/ESL secondary students vocabulary learning and overall lexical acquisition.

Chang Victor The role and effectiveness of e-learning for the industry

This book identifies the current role and effectiveness of e-learning and its key issues in an industrial context. The first objective is to identify the role of e-learning, particularly in staff training and executive education, where e-learning (online, computer-based or videoconferencing learning) has made significant impacts and contributions to several organisations such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Cisco and Cap Gemini Earnst and Young. The second objective of this research is to understand the effectiveness of e-learning. This can be classified into two key issues: (1) methods of e-learning implementations; and (2) factors influencing effective and ineffective e-learning implementations. From Chapter Five, a proposed way is to retain the decentralised implementation while co-ordinating at a centralised way. Another learning point is about interactive learning (IL), the combination of both e-learning and face-to-face learning. IL has been making contributions to several organisations, including the increase in motivation, learning interests and also efficiency.

Mrs G. Linnaeus Banks, Mrs Alfred Baldwin The Collected Supernatural . Weird Fiction of Mrs G. Linnaeus Banks and Mrs Alfred Baldwin. Through the Night .The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories Twenty-Four Short Tales to Chill the Blood

Two works of collected ghost stories from two remarkable ladiesAmong the many authors who practised the craft of the ghost story during the Golden Age of the genre during the nineteenth century several of its finest exponents were women. Ironically, some of those writers who most successfully brought their fictional horrors shrieking into the drawing rooms of their readers were gentlewomen, whose names appeared on their works using the reserved and formal appellation, 'Mrs'. This special Leonaur edition contains the collected works of two of these talented authors, Mrs. G. Linnaeus Banks and Mrs Alfred Baldwin. Isabella Banks was a prolific author as well as a wife and a mother to eight children. Her most notable work was 'The Manchester Man', a highly regarded social commentary concerning the northern working classes of England. Her excellent supernatural tales collected here include 'Wraith-Haunted', 'Pipers Ghost', 'A Dour Weird' and many others. This substantial volume of the other worldly also includes the collected works of Louisa Baldwin. An invalid, Louisa Baldwin, mother of the British Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, loathed idleness and was a prodigious author. 'The Shadow on the Blind' included here, is, perhaps, her most highly regarded short story, though the nine other tales in this book equally demonstrate her fine literary skills.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available ...

The essential e-learning design manual, updated with the latest research, design principles, and examples e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is the ultimate handbook for evidence-based e-learning design. Since the first edition of this book, e-learning has grown to account for at least 40% of all training delivery media. However, digital courses often fail to reach their potential for learning effectiveness and efficiency. This guide provides research-based guidelines on how best to present content with text, graphics, and audio as well as the conditions under which those guidelines are most effective. This updated fourth edition describes the guidelines, psychology, and applications for ways to improve learning through personalization techniques, coherence, animations, and a new chapter on evidence-based game design. The chapter on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning introduces three forms of cognitive load which are revisited throughout each chapter as the psychological basis for chapter principles. A new chapter on engagement in learning lays the groundwork for in-depth reviews of how to leverage worked examples, practice, online collaboration, and learner control to optimize learning. The updated instructor's materials include a syllabus, assignments, storyboard projects, and test items that you can adapt to your own course schedule and students. Co-authored by the most productive instructional research scientist in the world, Dr. Richard E. What could be more important to college and university faculty than teaching well? Indeed, in the past several years researchers have not only investigated key variables influencing teaching and learning, they also have applied empirical findings to develop and refine new systems of teaching and learning—approaches that provide the infrastructure for the day-to-day organization and assessment of student learning over the course of an academic term. This volume presents an overview of these systems and offers an assessment of the effectiveness of each relative to both student learning and enjoyment of the learning process. Written by leading teaching scholars, these systems include the lecture, problem-based learning, case studies, team-based learning, interteaching, service-learning, just-in-time teaching, Web-based computer-aided personalized instruction, and online teaching. Each contributor outlines the basic principles of a system, describes how to implement the system, and reviews the system’s overall effectiveness. This is the 128th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Shifting faculty roles in a changing landscape Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape for generations. His powerful and enduring argument for a new approach to faculty roles and rewards continues to play a significant part of the national conversation on scholarship in the academy. Though steeped in tradition, the role of faculty in the academic world has shifted significantly in recent decades. The rise of the non-tenure-track class of professors is well documented. If the historic rule of promotion and tenure is waning, what role can scholarship play in a fragmented, unbundled academy? Boyer offers a still much-needed approach. He calls for a broadened view of scholarship, audaciously refocusing its gaze from the tenure file and to a wider community. This expanded edition offers, in addition to the original text, a critical introduction that explores the impact of Boyer's views, a call to action for applying Boyer's message to the changing nature of faculty work, and a discussion guide to help readers start a new conversation about how Scholarship Reconsidered applies today.

Richard E. Mayer, this book distills copious e-learning research into a practical manual for improving learning through optimal design and delivery. Get up to date on the latest e-learning research Adopt best practices for communicating information effectively Use evidence-based techniques to engage your learners Replace popular instructional ideas, such as learning styles with evidence-based guidelines Apply evidence-based design techniques to optimize learning games e-Learning continues to grow as an alternative or adjunct to the classroom, and correspondingly, has become a focus among researchers in learning-related fields. New findings from research laboratories can inform the design and development of e-learning. However, much of this research published in technical journals is inaccessible to those who actually design e-learning material. By collecting the latest evidence into a single volume and translating the theoretical into the practical, e-Learning and the Science of Instruction has become an essential resource for consumers and designers of multimedia learning.
