Assessing Expressive Learning is the only book in the art education field to date to propose and support a research-supported teacher-directed authentic assessment model for evaluating K-12 studio art, and to offer practical information on how to implement the model. This practical text for developing visual arts assessment for grades 1-12 is based on and supported by the results of a year-long research effort primarily sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, involving 70 art teachers and 1,500 students in 12 school districts in Florida, Indiana, and Illinois. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that creative artwork by K-12 students can be empirically assessed using quantitative measures that are consistent with the philosophical assumptions of authentic learning and with the means and ends of art, and that these measures can reliably assess student art growth. A further goal was to provide a rationale for the assessment of student art as an essential part of the K-12 instructional program and to encourage art teachers to take responsibility for and assume a leadership role in the assessment of art learning in the school and the school district. Assessing Expressive Learning: *reports on current assessment methods but also stresses a time-tested portfolio assessment process that can be used or adapted for use in any K-12 art classroom; *includes the assessment instruments used in the study and several case studies of art teachers using electronic portfolios...

The importance of student assessment, particularly for summative purposes, has increased greatly over the pastthirty years. At the same time, emphasis on including all students in assessment programs has also increased.Assessment programs, whether they are large-scale, district-based, or teacher developed, have traditionally attempted toassess students using a single instrument administered to students under the same conditions. Educators and testdevelopers, however, are increasingly acknowledging that this practice does not result in valid information, inferences, and decisions for all students. This problem is particularly true for students in the margins, whose characteristics andneeds differ from what the public thinks of as the general population of students. Increasingly, educators, educationalleaders, and test developers are seeking strategies, techniques, policies, and guidelines for assessing students for whomstandard assessment instruments do not function well.Whether used for high-stakes decisions or classroom-based formative decisions, the most critical element of anyeducational assessment is validity. Developing and administering assessment instruments that provide valid measuresand allow for valid inferences and decisions for all groups of students presents a major challenge for today's assessmentprograms. Over the past few decades, several national policies have sparked research and development efforts that aimto increase test validity for students in the ma...

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1,5, Mar Augusthinose College, language: English, abstract: Provable data possession (PDP) is a technique for ensuring the integrity of data in storage outsourcing. In this scheme, we address the construction of an efficient PDP scheme for distributed cloud storage to support the scalability of service and data migration, in which we consider the existence of multiple cloud service providers to cooperatively store and maintain the clients' data. We present a cooperative PDP (CPDP) scheme based on homomorphic verifiable response and hash index hierarchy. We prove the security of our scheme based on multi-prover zero-knowledge proof system, which can satisfy completeness, knowledge soundness, and zero-knowledge properties. In addition, we articulate performance optimization mechanisms for our scheme, and in particular present an efficient method for selecting optimal parameter values to minimize the computation costs of clients and storage service providers. Our experiments show that our solution introduces lower computation and communication overheads in comparison with non-cooperative approaches. Using MR-PDP to store treplicas is computationally much more efficient than using a single-replica PDP scheme to store t separate, unrelated files (e.g., by encrypting each file separately prior to storing it). Another advantage of MR-PDP is that it can generate further replicas on demand, at li...

In this book, the self-healing of composite structures with shape memory polymer as either matrix or embedded suture is systematically discussed. Self-healing has been well known in biological systems for many years: a typical example is the self-healing of human skin. Whilst a minor wound can be self-closed by blood clotting, a deep and wide cut needs external help by suturing. Inspired by this observation, this book proposes a two-step close-then-heal (CTH) scheme for healing wide-opened cracks in composite structures–by constrained shape recovery first, followed by molecular healing. It is demonstrated that the CTH scheme can heal wide-opened structural cracks repeatedly, efficiently, timely, and molecularly. It is believed that self-healing represents the next-generation technology and will become an engineering reality in the near future. The book consists of both fundamental background and practical skills for implementing the CTH scheme, with additional focus on understanding strain memory versus stress memory and healing efficiency evaluation under various fracture modes. Potential applications to civil engineering structures, including sealant for bridge decks and concrete pavements, and rutting resistant asphalt pavements, are also explored. This book will help readers to understand this emerging field, and to establish a framework for new innovation in this direction. Key features: explores potential applications of shape memory polymers in civil engineering structures, which is believed to be unique within the literature balanced testing and mathematical modeling, useful for both academic researchers and practitioners the self-healing scheme is based on physical change of polymers and is written in an easy to understand style for engineering professionals without a strong background in chemistry

OFDM has been an attractive choice for digital modulation in the recent years due to its robustness to channel fading and invulnerability to intersymbol interference. However, to achieve an optimal performance the corresponding channel estimation scheme need to be accurate. This book focuses on the use of guard intervals between successive OFDM symbols for channel estimation. A hybrid of blind and semi-blind estimation techniques is proposed to create an energy efficient scheme that can maintain accurate channel estimation as well as a low transmission BER. Multipath fading channel are considered for performance evaluation. The proposed hybrid scheme is tested in static as well as time varying channel environments using computer simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes on the basis of BER performance for the same SNR.

American higher education needs a major reframing of student learning outcomes assessment Dynamic changes are underway in American higher education. New providers, emerging technologies, cost concerns, student debt, and nagging doubts about quality all call out the need for institutions to show evidence of student learning. From scholars at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education presents a reframed conception and approach to student learning outcomes assessment. The authors explain why it is counterproductive to view collecting and using evidence of student accomplishment as primarily a compliance activity. Today's circumstances demand a fresh and more strategic approach to the processes by which evidence about student learning is obtained and used to inform efforts to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making. Whether you're in the classroom, an administrative office, or on an assessment committee, data about what students know and are able to do are critical for guiding changes that are needed in institutional policies and practices to improve student learning and success. Use this book to: Understand how and why student learning outcomes assessment can enhance student accomplishment and increase institutional effectiveness Shift the view of assessment from being externally driven to internally motivated Learn how assessment results can help inform decision-making Use assessment data to manage change and improve student success Gauging student learning is necessary if institutions are to prepare students to meet the 21st century needs of employers and live an economically independent, civically responsible life. For assessment professionals and educational leaders, Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education offers both a compelling rationale and practical advice for making student learning outcomes assessment more effective and efficient.

The study assessed the utility of the professional relationships of the mentor, student teacher and lecturer in pre-service teacher preparation in Zimbabwe. Using a descriptive survey design within a case study, through questionnaires and interviews on a sample of 80 host teachers, 32 lecturers and 75 student teachers, data was collected from the three principal parties in the mentoring scheme in three teachers colleges in the Masvingo province of Zimbabwe. The empirical investigation revealed that the tripartite student teacher mentoring scheme, though with high hopes of yielding fruitful results, was flawed with gaps and challenges, rendering the quality of the student teachers' school based professional training some-what wanting. Promising initiatives, especially to do with more dialogue between lecturers and host teachers on aspects of host teaching,as measures to mitigate the challenges were suggested.

In this era of increasing pressure on higher education institutions for accountability, Planning and Assessment in Higher Education is an essential resource for college and university leaders and staff charged with the task of providing evidence of institutional effectiveness. Michael F. Middaugh, a noted expert in the field, shows how colleges and universities can successfully measure student learning and institutional effectiveness and use these results to create more efficient communications with both internal and external constituencies as well as promote institutional effectiveness to support student learning. «How can the assessment of institutional effectiveness be used to provide a solid foundation for planning? Middaugh has crafted a comprehensive, practical guide that also explains what accrediting agencies really want and need to know about these topics.» —Elizabeth H. Sibolski, executive vice president, Middle States Commission on Higher Education «Only Michael Middaugh, the unquestioned national leader in this field, could write such a lucid overview of how to make institutional assessment and planning really work as a tool rather than as a tedious requirement. He helped invent and shape the focus of national assessment rubrics and now offers his insights into how to make them work for your institution.» —John C. Cavanaugh, chancellor, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education «Middaugh provides extremely helpful and practical guidance and insights on how colleges and universities can use assessment tools and frameworks to improve both academic programs and administrative operations. A valuable and timely book for all higher education leaders.» —James P. Honan, senior lecturer on education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

The Government of the United Kingdom launched the Help to Buy scheme as a response to the persistent mismatch in housing supply and demand along with the consequent trend of ever rising house prices. In the book on hand the different components of the scheme are described and their official aims are revealed. These are contrasted with the real effects the scheme has on the residential property market. It is further evaluated whether Help to Buy has the intended impact and therefore is an appropriate measure to narrow the gap between housing supply and demand in addition to making home ownership more affordable. In this context, a cost-benefit analysis is undertaken and the scheme's scientific verification is assessed. Suggestions are presented on how to better target the scheme and alternative measures to tackle the problems on the housing market are developed. Finally, a recommendation for the most appropriate transition strategy after the expiration of Help to Buy is made and an unconventional view on the relevance of a high home ownership rate for an economy is expounded.

The above features are imposing technical challenges on system design and stimulating various research topics on capacity, complexity and performance. In order to increase the capacity of wireless networks, various multiple access schemes have been reported in the literature. The credit of most competent multiple access scheme in 2G systems goes to CDMA scheme which offers an even better bandwidth-efficiency than TDMA and FDMA schemes, however, its implementation is quite difficult due to involvement of rather complex technologies including complex power-control, and multiuser detection techniques etc. The requirement of alternate mechanism for user separation has been solved by Interleave-Division Multiple-Access (IDMA) scheme, in which, most of above stated problems do not exist due to application of user-specific interleavers having low cross-correlation amongst them. Offers solutions and best practices to respond to recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in the field Since the publication of the first edition of Environmental Impact Assessment in 2003, both the practice and theory of impact assessment have changed substantially. Not only has the field been subject to a great deal of new regulations and guidelines, it has also evolved tremendously, with a greater emphasis on strategic environmental, sustainability, and human health impact assessments. Moreover, there is a greater call for impact assessments from a global perspective. This Second Edition, now titled Impact Assessment to reflect its broader scope and the breadth of these many changes, offers students and practitioners a current guide to today's impact assessment practice. Impact Assessment begins with an introduction and then a chapter reviewing conventional approaches to the field. Next, the book is organized around recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in impact assessment process design and management, enabling readers to quickly find the material they need to solve tough problems, including: How to make impact assessments more influential, rigorous, rational, substantive, practical, democratic, collaborative, ethical, and adaptive How each problem and challenge-reducing process would operate at the regulatory and applied levels How each problem can be approached for different impact assessment types—sustainability assessment, strategic environmental assessment, project-level EIA, social impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, and health impact assessment How to link and combine impact assessment processes to operate in situations with multiple overlapping problems, challenges, and impact assessment types How to connect and combine impact assessment processes Each chapter first addresses the topic with current theory and then demonstrates how that theory is applied, presenting requirements, guidelines, and best practices. Summaries at the end of each chapter provide a handy tool for structuring the design and evaluation of impact assessment processes and documents. Readers will find analyses and new case studies that address such issues as multi-jurisdictional impact assessment, climate change, cumulative effects assessment, follow-up, capacity building, interpreting significance, and the siting of major industrial and waste facilities. Reflecting current theory and standards of practice, Impact Assessment is appropriate for both students and practitioners in the field, enabling them to confidently respond to a myriad of new challenges in the field.
