Black students in the United States continue to struggle academically as they matriculate into postsecondary education, placing them at risk for missing opportunities for work and social success. Research has identified the dimensions of Black racial identity, as well as other social factors, that may contribute to academic success. What is missing, however, is research grounded in a theory of Black identity that examines how identity and other factors combine to influence academic success. This quantitative online survey research tested 5 hypotheses to ascertain their relative strength in predicting academic success among Black college students. A sample of 87 Black American students (at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled as a matriculating student in postsecondary undergraduate education) completed four scales, and a demographics form that included overall GPA, as of most recently completed term. The results suggest that high school and college counselors and educators can gain insights into Black students by understanding racial identity, parents' education, and academic support.

This book aimed at examining school community members' perceptions towards School Boards as management organs at school level and the extent to which such Boards have contributed to the prevailing trend of secondary education system. School Board is legally responsible for all school operations. Contrary to this, School Boards' contribution to secondary school improvement is minimal because Board members are not involved fully in every issue that occurs at schools. This is because of lack of professional background in education, poor representativeness, lack of commitment and managerial skills among Board members. This book has been designed to help those professionally engaged in secondary education management because of its practical orientation. Secondary schools in Kenya are under pressure to raise the level of their students’ academic performance. As a result, improvement strategies are constantly being adopted. Among these are collaboration and benchmarking. Despite their adoption, academic performance in the Western Region of Kenya has remained very dismal. This study was carried out to establish why this was so.It revealed that, the schools that adopted both practices had above average means and high university percentage pass grades. Those that adopted only one of the strategies were merely average while those involved that adopted neither of the strategies were to blame for dismal performance. Although there was a positive linear relationship between investment in these strategies and academic performance, collaboration had a higher level of investment which resulted in better academic performance compared to benchmarking. It was therefore recommended that, schools should adopt a three pronged collaboration and benchmarking strategy carried out at the level of schools, departments and subjects. In addition, schools should uniformly invest in both strategies in order to boost academic performance in the region.
