Breast cancer is a complex disease with many factors that can contribute to its development. As such, informative biomarkers are required to accurately and comprehensively characterize breast cancer so that patient management is both informed and optimal. Current breast cancer biomarkers, although useful, have limitations and are sometimes unable to classify all breast cancer patients. Therefore, new classes of biomarkers and detection tools are needed. A possible complement to existing biomarkers is the aberrant DNA methylation of miRNA promoters in breast cancer. This book will take the reader on a journey from discovering a novel biomarker to developing a new technology for detecting this potential biomarker in clinical practice. The genetics/biotechnology interdisciplinary combination may appeal to readers majoring in either field and to anyone interested in interdisciplinary research.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer and leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. Although the causes and natural history of breast cancer remain unclear, epidemiological research has uncovered genetic, biological, environmental and lifestyle risk factors for the disease. Over the past several decades, the risk of breast cancer in developed countries has increased by one to two percent annually. While data for developing countries are limited, cancer registries suggest that age-standardized incidence rates are rising even more rapidly in low-incidence regions such as Africa and Asia. As of 2012, there are 7 centers around Nepal that provide treatment for cancer, and Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, is the only one in the western region. The centre has both a Linear Accelerator and a Telecobalt external radiotherapy unit. Since its inception in 2000, the center has treated nearly 950 patients with radiotherapy till 2008. The aim of this study was to determine the trends and to estimate the future load of patients with breast cancer requiring radiotherapy at Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal.

Over the past two decades in Taiwan, the incidence of breast cancer is increasing. The equivalent peak of Taiwanese occurred about 10 years younger that United States. Younger than 45 years old female (pre-menopause) breast cancer women were increasing rapidly in Taiwan. But, gene line mutation of Asian-Pacific countries, such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Malaysia occurred significant lower than Caucasian women with breast cancer. Chemical hormone replacement therapy that may cause breast cancer is not as popular in Taiwan as in Western countries. To explain this by epidemiology,we found Taiwanese women with premenstrual or post menstruation problems are greatly interest to use traditional Chinese herbs or herbal estrogen. It is reasonable to suspect the overuse of herbs may contribute to the Taiwanese breast cancer incidence. Breast MRI image for detecting breast lesions is extremely sensitive. It can identify breast cancer at early stage of the formation. In this book,we introduce our experiences on how MRI helps to alert women with overuse hormone or herb to increase their breast cancer risk. We also discuss the benefit of using anti-estrogen to prevent breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common type of malignant tumors and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Breast cancer metastasis is the main cause of death from this disease. Psoriasin (S100A7), a member of the S100 family proteins, is characterized by having calcium-binding domains and is involved in multiple physiopathological processes in the cell such as cell cycle progression and cellular differentiation. Overexpression of S100A7 is a well known factor for inducing progression of the preinvasive to invasive form of breast cancer and its presence is correlated with poor prognosis. Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF), especially types 1 and 2, has also been shown to play an important role in cellular growth and proliferation of breast and other types of cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-talk between S100A7 and IGF-induced signaling mechanism on breast cancer progression and metastasis. We have shown that overexpression of S100A7 in ERα- breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and SCP6 enhances IGF-induced growth, wound healing, chemotaxis and chemoinvasion.

The life time exposure to estrogen for long periods is highly implicated with the risk of developing the disease, this steroid hormone exerts its effect through the action of its nuclear receptor (ERα) which is encoded by ESR1 gene. This book is an attempt to shed a light on the problem of breast cancer in Sudan, and the genetics behind the association between the exposure to estrogen hormone and the risk of breast cancer, and different clinical and histological characteristics of breast cancer. Furthermore, it also addresses the potential role of different genetic variants of ESR1 gene on the status of estrogen receptor.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Understanding the biology of this tumor is a prerequisite for selecting an appropriate treatment. Cell cycle alterations are seen in many cancers such as breast cancer. Newly popular targeted agents in breast cancer have been reported such as cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) which are agents inhibiting the function of cyclin dependent kinases (CDKs) as well as Notch, Wnt, SHH (Sonic hedgehog) which have recently been reported as a novel therapeutic target in breast cancer. They are categorized as selective and non-selective inhibitors of CDK. CDKIs have been tried as monotherapy and combination therapy. Palbocyclib is now a promising CDKI used in breast cancer. Nowadays palbocyclib is designed for a phase III trial for estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer after showing favorable results in progression free survival in a phase II trial. The tumor microenvironment is increasingly recognized as a significant factor in cancer treatment response. The tumor microenvironment is considered as a target for combination therapy of breast cancer.

Cancer stem cells (CSC) have been detected in breast tumours and in breast cancer cell lines; they are a subpopulation of tumour cells with tumour initiating capacity, which self-renew and give rise to progeny that constitute the tumour bulk. It has been suggested that CSCs are major drivers of relapse after treatment because they are relatively resistant to drug- and radiation-induced cell death. Analysis of breast cancer stem cells has a major significance in the field of cancer therapy. From a therapeutic perspective, it is important to focus on the CSC population most responsible for tumour initiation, metastasis and relapse. But it is not currently clear which characteristics most define the highly tumorigenic population. Regarding this, my project focused on two main characteristics of CSCs: expression of pluripotency factors such as OCT4, and slow cycling properties using existing breast cancer cell lines MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 that are known to contain a CSC population. Also, I attempted to leverage the marine bioproducts expertise of the Medical Biotechnology Department, and the Flinders Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development to screen for novel sponge-derived chemicals.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution and is associated with serious consequences for public health, long term treatments, slow recovery and serious sequelae in the musculoskeletal and nervous system in some cases. Several variables are associated with the acquisition of human brucellosis such as consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products, exposure to infected domestic animals, herding and being in a family that had brucellosis index case. Despite its control in many countries, human brucellosis still remains a public health problem in other regions. This book explored various risk factors associated with brucellosis acquisition. Most of these variables are modifiable, and efforts should be focused on public health education regarding the disease and its risk factors, improvements in recognition and notification systems and active cooperation between health and veterinary ministries to reduce the incidence of the disease.

One in every eight cancers in the world develops in the oesophagus or stomach. While the incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma and oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma have declined in recent decades, oesophageal adenocarcinoma has increased more than any other cancer. Infection with Helicobacter pylori, dietary salt and smoking are the main risk factors for gastric and oesophageal cancer. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Barrett’s oesophagus and obesity are risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinomas of the oesophago-gastric junction and cardia include two distinct types, one resembling gastric cancer caused by H.pylori infection, the other, associated with GORD, resembling Barrett’s adenocarcinoma. Gender is also a major intrinsic factor, with upper gastrointestinal cancer much commoner in men. The current work examines this male predominance at the population level and with reference to Lauren histological type, showing that only intestinal-type but not diffuse type upper GI cancers occur more frequently in men.

We conclude that survivin does not induce considerable humoral responses in lung cancer. Potentially, however, strong anti-survivin antibody responses can be elicited during the follow-up of the patients, whose clinical significance remains to be elucidated. These findings, together with our previous data concerning survivin expression and the related cytolytic T cell responses in lung cancer, signify a high tolerogenic potential of this tumor-associated antigen.

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease cancer risk. The vast majority of cancer cases are due to environmental risk factors. Many of these environmental factors are controllable lifestyle choices. Thus, cancer is generally preventable. Between 70% and 90% of common cancers are due to environmental factors and therefore potentially preventable. This book is intended to provide a relatively short overview of important concepts and notions on the molecular biology of human cancers, including many facts essential to find one's way in this field.

If research has been conducted to the general public’s needs and perceptions concerning receiving information about the role of hereditary factors with regard to cancer, some determinants can be anticipated. Both cancer organisations and health educators can provide the correct information to the public. The aim is to improve people’s understanding of the relationship between genetics and cancer and to diminish unnecessary concerns. People know when they have an increased risk and when they have to undertake action, like cancer screening. With this foreknowledge, the development of cancer in susceptible individuals can be prevented with a potential for years of life gained being highest for youths with a genetic risk for cancer. Therefore a correct approach to hereditary cancer and other relevant determinants lifestyle habits are important in the contribution to reduce cancer. This study is a replica of a Dutch study (Department of Health Education, Maastricht University). It has been conducted in New Zealand. An advantage of the replica is that new findings can be integrated in the current developments. Another advantage may be that cultural aspects can be more specified.

For long, breast carcinoma has presented dilemma of varied shapes and sizes of tumour cells, their arrangements and products and heterogeneity of the tumour, for understanding the exact nature and types of the disease and the cells in the breast from which it originated precisely. Even now in wide geographic areas of the world, the usual practice is to diagnose breast carcinoma as lobular, intra-ductal, infiltrating lobular and infiltrating ductal, only rarely identifying the cell type, growth pattern. Known for intra epithelial infiltration, the breast carcinoma originating in any part of the breast ducts rapidly involves other segments, and undergoes rapid up and down regulations of the cells, hence, practice of final diagnosis of the breast carcinoma as lobular and ducal has little significance and is obsolete now. Cancer Care having entered Evidence Based era, cellular origin and molecular processes involved in the origin and evolution of the breast cancer had been focus of recent studies. This book presents histopathological classification of breast carcinoma and ER, PR, and EGFR2 status in the breast duct carcinoma variants.

In this book, the author studies the factors in, and obstacles to, creating a common knowledge region between Helsinki and Tallinn capital regions under conditions where a special integration-enhancing institution, the non-profit organisation Helsinki-Tallinn Euregio, is part of the process. The developmental factors are analysed in the context of three interlinked theoretical concepts: regionalisation and networking theories, knowledge creation theories, including knowledge transfer, and Living Lab as an innovative method in the evolution of a Knowledge Region. This approach makes it possible to analyse how cross-border cooperation organisations can enhance the use of complex tools and methods for the advancement of a cross-border innovation that can be multiplied to other CB regions.

The present study used hierarchical linear modeling to examine correlates of benefit finding at study entry and individuals trajectories of benefit finding over time among men treated for early stage prostate cancer (n = 261). Correlates associated with benefit finding at study entry included intrinsic religiosity, perceived social support, perceived present control, approach coping, use of emotional support, avoidant coping, and religious coping. Within-persons changes in optimism, perceived social support, perceived present control, approach coping, use of emotional support, avoidant coping, and religious coping were associated with within-persons changes in benefit finding. The association between the trajectories of perceived social support and benefit finding was partially mediated by approach coping and use of emotional support. The findings suggest that coping responses may represent an important mechanism through which changes in benefit finding occur.

Breast cancer has become a major health problem over the last 50 years; it is a leading cause of cancer-related death in women population today. However, if breast abnormalities are detected and diagnoses are made at early stages, studies show that the chances of survival can be greatly improved. In this work, multi-scale fractal dimension is used to derive a set of textural features in order to perform texture analysis on breast tissues samples. The box counting method was used to estimate the multi fractal dimensions. The feed forward neural network is used to classify different types of breast tissues according to the extracted fractal dimension vectors.
