"Only connect" is the idea at the heart of this book, a heartbreaking and provocative tale of three families at the beginning of the twentieth century: the rich Wilcoxes, the gentle, idealistic Schlegels and the lower-middle class Basts. As the Schlegel sisters try desperately to help the Basts and educate the close-minded Wilcoxes, the families are drawn together in love, lies and death. Frequently cited as E.M. Forster's finest work, HOWARDS END brilliantly explores class warfare, conflict and the English character.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, grade: 8, Vilnius University (IIRPS), course: Eastern European and Russian Studies, language: English, abstract: This master thesis aims to analyze the relationship between mass movement in Moscow in the period from 2011 until 2013 and emergence of middle class in the State. The main objective of the paper is to prove that Financial Economic Crisis of 2008 - 2010 gave a sufficient impetus for the middle class in Russia to join the protest movement against unfair elections. In work the attempt to find an answer to the questions such as the reason why middle class joined protests in 2011, what processes preconditioned this mass decision and why the protests did not go further is made. The hypothesis is formulated as following: in the basis of middle class social discontent and their accession to the protests in 2011-2013 lies economic situation, which emerged in the country after financial and economic crisis, 2008-2010 rather than political engagement. In order to test this hypothesis the following analyses were made: the description of the protests themselves, description of middle class in Russia, analysis of polls and researches on this matter, investigation and short description of economic situation in the country within the years from 2008 till 2011, and interviews with political activists from non-systematic opposition were made. The work clarifies the importance of living standards and Wes...

James Henry Washington Square

Washington Square marks the culmination of James's apprentice period as a novelist. With sharply focused attention upon just four principal characters, James provides an acute analysis of middle-class manners and behaviour in the New York of the 1870's, a period of great change in the life of the city. This change is explored through the device of setting the novel's action during the 1840s, similarly a period of considerable turbulence as the United States experienced the onset of rapid commercial and industrial expansion. Through the relationships between Austin Sloper, a celebrated physician, and his sister Lavinia Penniman, his daughter Catherine, and Catherine's suitor, Morris Townsend, James observes the contemporary scene as a site of competing styles and performances where authentic expression cannot be articulated or is subject to suppression. Jacek Tittenbrun The Middle Class or You only live twice

Document from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Social System, Social Structure, Class, Social Stratification, University of Poznan (Institute of Sociology), language: English, abstract: The book tests the double hypothesis of the death of the middle class. Using U.S. and other developed and developing countries' materials, it seeks to answer whether the popular thesis on its demise is true, and second, it shows it is true in a conceptual sense, viz. , the term in question is a misnomer, referring to a stratum rather than a class. In the course of those investigations other key questions are examined, such as an all-important issue of socio-economic inequality: both in national and world context. The study is underpinned by an original conceptual framework encompassing social class and estate theories and ownership theory. This makes it possible to criticise many other approaches to the problems analysed. For instance, a critique of a well-known book by the French economist Th. Picketty has been undertaken, showing its numerous flaws. In addition, the analysis of the middle class concept demonstrates its defects manifest in its various definitions and usages.

The Labor Wars in Cordoba, 1955-1976: Ideology, Work, and Labor Politics in an Argentine Industrial Society

Cordoba is Argentina's second-largest city, a university town that became the center of its automobile industry. In the decade following the overthrow of Juan Peron's government in 1955, the city experienced rapid industrial growth. The arrival of IKA-Renault and Fiat fostered a particular kind of industrial development and created a new industrial worker of predominantly rural origins. Former farm boys and small-town dwellers were thrust suddenly into the world of the modern factory and the multinational corporation. The domination of the local economy by a single industry and the prominent role played by the automobile workers' unions brought about the greatest working-class protest in postwar Latin American history, the 1969 Cordobazo. Following the Cordobazo, the local labor movement was one characterized by intense militancy and determined opposition to both authoritarian military governments and the Peronist trade union bureaucracy. These labor wars have been mythologized as a Latin American equivalent to the French student strikes of May-June 1968 and the Italian "hot summer" of the same period. Analyzing these events in the context of recent debates on Latin American working-class politics, Brennan demonstrates that the pronounced militancy and even political radicalism of the Cordoban working class were due not only to Argentina's changing political culture but also to the dynamic relationship between the factory and society during those years. Brennan draws on corpo...

James A Hudson A Message to Black America. Motivating Young, Inner-City Black Men to Excellence

Black America is divided into three categories. The first category consists of wealthy and famous blacks. The second category consist of the middle-class and some famous blacks as well. Then comes the third category the overwhelming number of which are inner city blacks many of whom are in poverty. Those who found themselves in the latter category are the ones mentoring are intended for in this book! I firmly believed that wealthy and middle-class blacks have a duty and responsibility to come to the assistance of their fellow inner city blacks who are at a disadvantage. Many inner city black men are in needs of positive mentoring. These are the ones who are at a disadvantage that we addressed in the book. These are the people who are to be elevated. To be educated, given marketable skills to provide for themselves and their connections. The time has arrived for action, for steps to be implemented in order so that they may be lifted out of poverty and disrepair. If the Black American society should come of age, economically, socially, and politically, then, the overwhelming number of blacks at the poverty line must be brought up to par with their European Americans counterparts.Black America is losing too many young inner city black men for all sort of reasons. This cannot be allowed to continue. Therefore, we have laid out in this book of relevant information for those who desire to lift themselves up out of poverty, crime and violence, and become productive citizens!
