The performance of selected water infiltration models in organic amended soils were evaluated. Ten (10) infiltration models consisting of five (5) empirical (Philip (PH), Kostiakov (KT), Modified Kostiakov (MK), Kostiakov-Lewis (KL) and Natural resources conservation service(NRCS), three (3) physically based (Green-Ampt (GA), Smith-Parlange (SP), Talsma-Parlange (TP) and two (2) semi - empirical ( Swartzendruber (SW) and Horton (HT)), were evaluated for soils amended with cow dung and poultry litter. The aim was to study the ability of the models in accurately predicting measured cumulative infiltration. The study was carried out at the Agricultural Engineering experimental plot at Zaria. A field size of 200 m2 was cleared and divided into three strips, 50 kg each of Cow dung and poultry litter was applied into the furrow of the first and third strip and the middle strip served as control. The field was ploughed to a depth of 20 cm in order to mix the manure with the soil. Statistical t-test showed a significant difference between the amended strip and the control.

Often differences in land uses (forest, rubber plantation, paddy field, bare land) are known to have specific effects on soil properties. In the context of the project Living Landscapes China (LILAC) these effects were evaluated and the characteristics of soil types under changing conditions in two transects (altitude and parent material in transect 1, land uses in transect 2) in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve were classified. We used field investigations to classify the soil types, as well as laboratory analyses to quantify specific characteristics in samples, taken from the profiles. Soil physical (bulk density, water content, texture) and chemical parameters (total contents of carbon, nitrogen and macro nutrients, ECEC) were investigated. While differences in altitude did not seem to have profound influences on the soils, effects of land uses were pronounced especially in the first 10 to 20 cm of soil profiles. Soils under forests contain between 1.3 % - 2 % SOC and 0.15 % - 0.17 % TN in the Ah horizon. The emergence, establishment and growth of tree seedlings face very heterogeneous situations in tropical dry forests (TDFs). The pronounced seasonality in soil moisture availability affects the patterns of seed production, germination, survival and seedling development in plants. Light conditions vary seasonally in understorey of these forests, thereby affecting the growth of species components growing there. The patchy distribution and pulsation of nutrient release in the nutrient poor soils of these forests further restricts the growth of plants spatially and temporally. The plants in TDFs, therefore, exhibit a variation in life- history characteristics, which in combination modulate the response of species to these environmental drivers. Furthermore, interactions among these environmental drivers are a regular feature of natural ecosystems, and have a great significance in shaping of the community structure and dynamics. The book explores the response of TDF tree seedlings to the combined effect of resources i.e. light, water and nutrient. Scour is the number one cause of bridge failures. Scour in coarse-grained soils (sand, gravel) is relatively well known, but scour in fine-grained soils (silt, clay) and weak rock is not. In coarse- grained soils, scour takes place very rapidly and the scour rate is rarely an issue because one flood is likely to create the maximum scour depth. In fine- grained soils, the scour process is much slower, as a result, even after a hundred years; a bridge may not yet experience the maximum depth of scour. Therefore, in fine- grained soils it becomes necessary to predict the rate at which scour takes place. To solve the above problem a new apparatus called the TEM (TIME EROSION METER) has been proposed after the studies. At present, the model, and both prototype of this apparatus have been successfully devised. From the experimental result of this apparatus, it is expected that this apparatus can be successfully put in use to measure the erosion rate of both fine-grained and coarse- grained soils in more rational way than the present practice.

The aim of the study was to investigate how masculinity is represented, constructed and depicted in the lyrics of Kenyan rap music. Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , language: English, abstract: Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is commonly grown in home gardens of tropical and sub-tropical countries. The fruit contains high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. The Artocarpus heterophyllus is believed indigenous to the Western Ghats of India. It is adapted only to the humid tropical and near tropical climate. The tree flourishes in rich deep soil of medium or open texture, sometimes on deep gravelly or laterite soil. In India they say that the tree grows tall and thin on sand, short thick on sandy land. Here the physical and chemical properties of soil from surrounding plots of different varieties of Arthocarpus heterophyllus have been analysed by using different technical methods and evaluating the effects of soil property on jackfruit nutritional quality. It was observed that there was a considerable difference in case of some minerals likes phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, zinc and manganese. Change in the soil pH also noticed. The pH also plays a major role in the sweetness of the jackfruit. The optimum pH of the amylase inside the jackfruit was found to be 6.2 to 6.8. The result shows that the soils that have higher pH have more sweet flakes. Proximate nutritional composition of the flake reveals the presence of protein, fat and fibre in a greater amount in some flake and these flakes were sweeter than the others. There was a much d...

Study of soils and their moisture content is one such area where Remote Sensing has wide applications. However, study of soils was not attractive until the advent of Hyper-spectral/Multi- spectral Imaging by satellite sensors, which provides reflectance information across the different contiguous spectral bands. The large amount of information in these bands served as features in the classification of soils. A spectral library of the different type of soils at different moisture levels serves as a reference for the purpose. However, a satellite sensor is designed to meet multiple criteria, which restricts the number of spectral bands that can be used and their resolution. Moreover, not all features contribute to classification. Hence, it becomes mandatory the optimal combination of the spectral bands is selected for a satisfactory classification of soils and the estimation of their moisture content. This work compares the performance of a hybrid algorithm, made by combining two sub-optimal methods, with the performances of the other classical algorithms for feature selection.

A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. The analysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soils and the development of conjugate stress, volumetric and strain-increment variables. These are used to examine the micromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxial shear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable by other means. An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils is crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as to those concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, or soils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with a significant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics.
