Currently, there are a number of different approaches to analysis using the FEM that vary according to the type of structure being analysed: beams and plates may use 1D or 2D approaches, shells and solids 2D or 3D approaches, and methods that work for one structure are typically not optimized to work for another. To fully realize the potential of truss layout optimization for the design of lightweight structures, the consideration of geometrical variables is then introduced. Chapter 2 addresses truss geometry and topology optimization by combining mathematical programming and structural mechanics: the structural properties of the optimal solution are used for devising the novel formulation. To avoid singularities arising in optimal configurations, this approach disaggregates the equilibrium equations and fully integrates their basic elements within the optimization formulation. The resulting tool incorporates elastic and plastic design, stress and displacement constraints, as well as self-weight and multiple loading. The inherent slenderness of lightweight structures requires the study of stability issues. As a remedy, Chapter 3 proposes a conceptually simple but efficient method to include local and nodal stability constraints in the formulation. Several numerical examples illustrate the impact of stability considerations on the optimal design. Finally, the investigation on realistic design problems in Chapter 4 confirms the practical applicability of the proposed method. It is shown how we can generate a range of optimal designs by varying design settings.

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, language: English, abstract: Root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, is an important nematode parasite of tuberose. A study was undertaken to assess the evaluation of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) against Meloidogyne incognita infestation on tuberose in vitro, pot culture and field conditions. Tuberose fields were surveyed for the nematode incidence in different districts of Tamil Nadu. Among the nematodes associated with the crop M. incognita caused severe damage to crop. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria were isolated from soil samples collected from field and subcultured for further studies. The isolates were tested for their efficacy for plant growth promotion by roll towel and pot culture studies with rice plants. Among them, three isolates, viz. BT3, BT8 and BT21 were found to be effective in increasing the plant growth promotion when compared to other isolates. Biochemical characterization of the isolates revealed that the cultures were found to be the group of Bacillus spp. Liquid formulation were prepared for the three isolates with nutrient amendments, viz. glycerol (10 Mm), trehalose (5 mM) and the stickers, viz. starch (2%) and PVP (2%) and the antagonistic effect of different Bacillus isolates were studied against M. incognita in vitro. We investigate a dual formulation of quantum electrodynamics (QED) on the lattice with finite chemical potential. This formulation replaces the conventional degrees of freedom, which are defined on the sites and links of the lattice, by loops and plaquettes on the lattice. These new variables are the dual degrees of freedom. When using the conventional variables, the partition function is an integral over Boltzmann factors, which are complex if the chemical potential is different from zero. Thus, they cannot be employed as a probability weight in a Monte Carlo simulation. But if one uses appropriate dual variables, then the partition function turns into an infinite sum over real quantities, also in the case of a non-trivial chemical potential. We show that all summands are even strictly positive if we restrict ourselves to a certain class of loops. Now, each term of this partition sum can be interpreted as a probability weight for the corresponding dual configuration of loops and plaquettes. This allows us to run a Monte Carlo simulation and to explore various observables for the case of a finite chemical potential.
