Remembrance and Denial. The Case of the Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide that began in World War I, during the drive to transform the plural Ottoman Empire into a monoethnic Turkey, removed a people from its homeland and erased most evidence of their 3000-year-old material and spiritual culture. For the rest of this century, changing world events, calculated silence, and active suppression of memory have overshadowed the initial global outrage and have threatened to make this calamity "the forgotten genocide" of world history.Fourteen leading scholars here examine the Armenian Genocide from a variety of perspectives to refute those efforts and show how remembrance and denial have shaped perceptions of the event. Many of the chapters draw on archival records and court proceedings to review the precursors and process of the genocide, examine German complicity, and share the responses of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders.

Religion is both a human internal experience and external phenomenon. Religion being part of human society, there is a great need to understand the meaning of religion as it forms the basis for human actions and fundamental decision making for most people. As a result, various scholars from different disciplines have endeavored to unveil the meaning of religion but from the point of view of their own academic backgrounds. Since religion forms a discipline in its own right, phenomenology of religion as part of religious studies is well placed as a method of grasping the meaning of religion as explained in this text. In pursuit to finding the unprejudiced meaning of religion, this book explores various categories of definitions of religion, and meaning of religion as expounded by evolutionary and projectionist theories. Scientific and theological reductionisms in relation to the meaning of religion have also been analyzed. The book presents a comprehensive introduction to Phenomenology of Religion as a course and method of intuiting the essence of religious phenomenon. It is highly recommended for undergraduate students of Religious Studies.

Pertinent to contemporary demands for reparations from Turkey is the relationship between law and property in connection with the Armenian Genocide. This book examines the confiscation of Armenian properties during the genocide and subsequent attempts to retain seized Armenian wealth. Through the close analysis of laws and treaties, it reveals that decrees issued during the genocide constitute central pillars of the Turkish system of property rights, retaining their legal validity, and although Turkey has acceded through international agreements to return Armenian properties, it continues to refuse to do so. The book demonstrates that genocides do not depend on the abolition of the legal system and elimination of rights, but that, on the contrary, the perpetrators of genocide manipulate the legal system to facilitate their plans.

This lack of explicit reference creates uncertainty as to treating rape as a potential conduct of genocide. However, this book thoroughly illustrates how rape can be used as a means to commit genocide!

This third volume of The Zohar: Pritzker Edition completes the Zohar's commentary on the book of Genesis. Here we find spiritual explorations of numerous biblical narratives, including Jacob's wrestling with the angel, Joseph's kidnapping by his brothers, his near seduction by Potiphar's wife, his interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams, and his reunion with his brothers and father. Throughout, the Zohar probes the biblical text and seeks deeper meaning - for example, the divine intention behind Joseph's disappearance, or the profound significance of human sexuality. Divine and human realities intertwine, affecting one another. Toward the end of Genesis, the Bible states: Jacob's days drew near to die - an idiomatic expression that the Zohar insists on reading hyperliterally. Each human being is challenged to live his days virtuously. If he does, those days themselves are woven into a garment of splendor; at death, they "draw near," enveloping him, escorting him to the beyond. Sefer ha-Zohar (The Book of Radiance) has amazed and overwhelmed readers ever since it emerged mysteriously in medieval Spain toward the end of the thirteenth century. Written in a unique Aramaic, this masterpiece of Kabbalah exceeds the dimensions of a normal book; it is virtually a body of literature, comprising over twenty discrete sections. The bulk of the Zohar consists of a running commentary on the Torah, from Genesis through Deuteronomy.

Books have been written about the evils of the genocide that occurred there. Scholars have had their share of debates and arguments about the issue. Newspapers, government reports and human right organizations have made it their headlines in different events. But after all that has been unfolded in Rwanda, all that was left was over 100,000 suspects and more than a million dead corpses. The government of Rwanda had to devise a system to deal with all those suspects, thus bringing forward a traditional conflict resolving mechanism called the Gacaca tribunals. These tribunals were established in every community and were mandated to address genocide related issues and deal with the suspects. They were also established on the belief that they would bring about transitional justice and reconciliation within the society. These and other factors aside, the tribunals were often criticized for lacking the proper due process aspects of dealing with suspects. The main focus of the paper is to discuss thoroughly these issues and analyze the tribunals on this basis.

The Meaning of the Creative Act is a seminal work for Nikolai Berdyaev. It adumbrates a number of crucially important themes that he develops in his later works, notably creative freedom as an essential element of human life and human creativeness as complementary to God's creativeness. Berdyaev's aim is to sketch out an "anthropodicy," a justification of man (as opposed to a theodicy, a justification of God); man is to be justified on the basis of his creative acts, inasmuch as he is a creature who is also a co-creator in God's work of creation. This is how Berdyaev puts it: "God awaits from us a creative act."

During and after World War I, over one million Ottoman Greeks were expelled from Turkey, a watershed moment in Greek history that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. And while few dispute the expulsion's tragic scope, it remains the subject of fierce controversy, as activists have fought for international recognition of an atrocity they consider comparable to the Armenian genocide. This book provides a much-needed analysis of the Greek genocide as cultural trauma. Neither taking the genocide narrative for granted nor dismissing it outright, Erik Sjöberg instead recounts how it emerged as a meaningful but contested collective memory with both nationalist and cosmopolitan dimensions.

Spoken language understanding (SLU) is an emerging field in between speech and language processing, investigating human/ machine and human/ human communication by leveraging technologies from signal processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence. SLU systems are designed to extract the meaning from speech utterances and its applications are vast, from voice search in mobile devices to meeting summarization, attracting interest from both commercial and academic sectors. Both human/machine and human/human communications can benefit from the application of SLU, using differing tasks and approaches to better understand and utilize such communications. This book covers the state-of-the-art approaches for the most popular SLU tasks with chapters written by well-known researchers in the respective fields. Key features include: Presents a fully integrated view of the two distinct disciplines of speech processing and language processing for SLU tasks. Defines what is possible today for SLU as an enabling technology for enterprise (e.g., customer care centers or company meetings), and consumer (e.g., entertainment, mobile, car, robot, or smart environments) applications and outlines the key research areas. Provides a unique source of distilled information on methods for computer modeling of semantic information in human/machine and human/human conversations. This book can be successfully used for graduate courses in electronics engineering, computer science or computational linguistics. Moreover, technologists interested in processing spoken communications will find it a useful source of collated information of the topic drawn from the two distinct disciplines of speech processing and language processing under the new area of SLU.

By exploring the processes of collecting, which challenge the bounds of normally acceptable practice, this book debates the practice of collecting 'difficult' objects, from a historical and contemporary perspective; and discusses the acquisition of objects related to war and genocide, and those purchased from the internet, as well as considering human remains, mass produced objects and illicitly traded antiquities. The aim is to apply a critical approach to the rigidity of museums in maintaining essentially nineteenth-century ideas of collecting; and to move towards identifying priorities for collection policies in museums, which are inclusive of acquiring 'difficult' objects. Much of the book engages with the question of the limits to the practice of collecting as a means to think through the implementation of new strategies.

It highlights the close link between capitalist industrialization and environmental degradation and explains how this consequently leads to human rights violations. This research tackles human rights approach to climate change with a special focus on international human rights instruments mainly the two international covenants, the ICCPR and the ICESCR, it seeks to understand whether they impose international obligations on states to protect human rights from the adverse effects of climate change and how those imposed duties can be enforced to effectively protect people's rights.Unfortunately, this paper will reach to the conclusion that the existing human rights law does not adequately protect human rights from the lethal threat of climate change, due to the absence of a universally recognized right to a healthy environment, moreover, despite the possibility of the extraterritorial application of the ICESCR, the political will of states to cooperate under the provisions of the covenant to face the issue of climate change seems to be also absent.

2014 Reprint of Original 1912 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Laughter" is a collection of three essays by French philosopher Henri Bergson, first published in 1900. In a short introduction, Bergson announces that he will try to define the comic, but he does not want to give a rigid definition of the word; he wants to deal with the comic as part of human life. His ambition is also to have a better knowledge of society, of the functioning of human imagination and of collective imagination, but also of art and life. Bergson begins to note three facts on the comic: 1] the comic is strictly a human phenomenon. A landscape cannot be a source of laughter, and when humans make fun of animals, it is often because they recognize some human behavior in them. Man is not only a being that can laugh, but also a being that is a source of laughter. 2] laughter requires an indifference, a detachment from sensibility and emotion: 3] it is more difficult to laugh when one is fully aware of the seriousness of a situation. It is difficult to laugh alone, it is easier to laugh collectively. One who is excluded from a group of people does not laugh with them, there is often a complicity in laughter. Thus the comic is not a mere pleasure of the intellect, it is a human and social activity, it has a social meaning.

A shattering history of the last hundred years of genocidal war which won the Pulitzer Prize for Non-fiction 2003.‘The United States has never in its history intervened to stop genocide and has in fact rarely even made a point of condemning it as it occurred.’In this convincing and definitive interrogation of the last century of American history and foreign policy, Samantha Power draws upon declassified documents, private papers, unprecedented interviews and her own reporting from the modern killing fields to tell the story of American indifference and American courage in the face of man's inhumanity to man.Tackling the argument that successive US leaders were unaware of genocidal horrors as they were occurring – against Armenians, Jews, Cambodians, Kurds, Rwandans, Bosnians – Samantha Power seeks to establish precisely how much was known and when, and claims that much human misery and tragedy could readily have been averted. It is clear that the failure to intervene was usually caused not by ignorance or impotence, but by considered political inaction. Several heroic figures did work to oppose and expose ethnic cleansing as it took place, but the majority of American politicians chose always to do nothing, as did the American public: Power notes that ‘no US president has ever suffered politically for his indifference to its occurrence. It is thus no coincidence that genocide rages on.’ This riveting book makes a powerful case for why America, as both sole superpower and global citizen, must make such indifference a thing of the past.

Making Meaning concerns how to live your life to make maximum impact. It does this by being the first book ever to fully develop the idea of meaning (defined as “significant impact”) which is greatest idea, since everything has it in some way. This development emphasizes that values or ought's/should's provide more meaning in one's life. We have a crying need for this today because most of us have little to believe in. “Does my life have enough meaning?” is a life-or-death question. This book takes a common sense approach to answering it. The author describes his own seeking and making meaning to render this abstract idea more concrete. Making Meaning explores the following eight sources of meaning: 1) relationships, 2) com- munity, 3) dialogue, 4) work, 5) art, 6) search for God, 7) possessions and 8) intangibles or nonphysical realities. The last source, potentially the largest, is explained and argued for. We have another crying need today to know more than physical things. This book tries to satisfy yet another crying need today: the objectivity of meaning. This gives us external standards to judge and live by. Today's widespread subjective view of meaning allows everyone to believe whatever they want. This view is dangerously chaotic and wrong. Toward the end Making Meaning tackles its major negative challenges: meaninglessness, nihilism (the view that nothing matters eventually) and extreme relativism. Finally, this book defines what is the meaning of li...

Meaning and Representation in History

History has always been more than just the past. It involves a relationship between past and present, perceived, on the one hand, as a temporal chain of events and, on the other, symbolically as an interpretation that gives meaning to these events through varying cultural orientations, charging it with norms and values, hopes and fears. And it is memory that links the present to the past and therefore has to be seen as the most fundamental procedure of the human mind that constitutes history: memory and historical thinking are the door of the human mind to experience. At the same time, it transforms the past into a meaningful and sense bearing part of the present and beyond. It is these complex interrelationships that are the focus of the contributors to this volume, among them such distinguished scholars as Paul Ricoeur, Johan Galtung, Eberhard Lämmert, and James E. Young. Full of profound insights into human society pat and present it is a book that not only historians but also philosophers and social scientists should engage with.Jörn Rüsen was Professor of Modern History at the Universities of Bochum and Bielefeld for many years. From 1994 to 1997 he was the Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF). The collection of poems painted within these pages are symbolic to real events that interrupt our half planned days. They are also metaphoric in the sense that looking into the world around us and seeing but not experiencing, hopeful these words can bring that experience to us. Each one was intended to move the reader away from a distressful atmosphere, or move towards an epiphany to a situation that theyve felt lost and cant explain where to go or do. Sometimes its harder to hear the words that our closest friends repeat to us. Though when exploding from the words of a page, thats when it connects to our inner selves. There is no single meaning to any form of expression, which is why discovering a new meaning from each of the text seems possible.

Wissenschaftliche Studie aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Pädagogik - Sonstiges, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Homo Spaciens" comes from the Latin words homo, in the sense of "human being", and spatium "space" which combined form the meaning of "human being originated in space". Homo Spaciens is a forthcoming species of the genus Homo, being evolved from Homo Sapiens, born from the cradle of Earth to live in outer space and spread to inhabit other planets. The Russian scientist Konstantin TSIOLKOVSKY (1857-1935), considered as the father of cosmonautics and human space flight, already envisioned a forthcoming new species of man, who would explore the entire solar system and then would expand into the depth of the cosmos to create cosmic civilizations. He believed that human exploration of space was inevitable and would enhance human evolution. Almost every author in the field of space exploration today cites him as a primary influence. TSIOLKOVSKY clearly understood that the primary issue in the future of space exploration was one of human evolution, and he saw it so early. Today, it is becoming increasingly clear to us that the universe is an infinite environment, the exploration of which will almost inevitably generate fundamental changes in human beings. Perhaps, Homo Sapiens may well evolve into a new species, Homo Spaciens, which will be more suited to life on the outer space than on Earth. The benefit from the integration of Outer Space A...

However, to detect, categorize and recognize human activity from video is a complicate and difficult problem. This book presents techniques in two topics: general human activity recognition and human activity analysis for the purpose of identifying pathological gait based on symmetry analysis. This book should help shed some light on this research area, and should be especially useful to professionals working in this field, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing video for human activity analysis.

Mohammad Shafiei Meaning and Intentionality. A Dialogical Approach

The objective of the present work is to develop a theory of meaning based on the method of transcendental phenomenology. The key idea of the project is to explain the constitution of the meaning by means of the analyses of the intentionality. We have investigated different intentional acts which are functioning in the expression and in constructing the meanings. In this regard we have studied, first, the act of the primordial expression, in which a content of an intuition is raised to the realm of the ideal, and then the acts of the categorial synthesis, in which further meanings are constituted in the absence of their proper intuition. We have investigated the effects of the phenomenological theory of meaning to the conception of pure logic. Dialogical semantics is shown to be an adequate framework, from the phenomenological point of view, to interpret logical reasoning and to explain the meaning of the logical constants as well. We have also discussed the meanings of some logical connectives, and their formalizations, using our phenomenologico-dialogical method. In particular, the meaning explanations of negation(s), strict implication and necessity are given in a way which is not model theoretic nor proof theoretic, but based on the transcendental intentionality as manifested in the course of the dialogue.

The first book of the Bible, Genesis, is the book of beginnings. It covers about 2500 years from the Creation, through the lives of Adam and Eve, through the great flood of Noah's day, through the lives of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to the lives of Jacob's sons who were heads of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Genesis ends with the death of Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into slavery by his brothers. Joseph, with God's help, saved the Egyptians, the family of Jacob, and the world, from the great famine of his day! Genesis provides the foundation for the other sixty-five books of the Bible!

Fr. Thomas Matt's Four Decades in Genesis is a story of both murder and redemption. It spans the years of 1967 to 2006. Placed in those four decades are excerpts from the first book of the Bible, and it bridges the story of creation to the death of Joseph. The actual murder is graphically depicted in this novel, and it may be considered by some to be too gruesome. The only consolation is the murder only occupies a couple of pages. I purposely wrote it this way because in the book, the reader will discover how I was able to know what actually happened and, more importantly, why it needed to be vividly described. The murder is central to this novel because it produced so many long-term consequences to the people it affected. Redemption has multiple levels. Forgiveness is one level, and recovery is another. The reader will easily see how both play out over time. Another facet embodies the insidious nature of chemical dependency and the miraculous powers of recovery from this disease. The power can be best described as a movement from abject hopelessness to spiritual serenity. Without hope, how can any human being discover their destiny in life?

Seeking to train readers to "hear all that is being said" within a written text, Peter Leithart advocates a hermeneutics of the letter that is not rigidly literalist and looks to learn to read--not just the Bible, but everything--from Jesus and Paul. Thus Deep Exegesis explores the nature of reading itself--taking clues from Jesus and Paul on the meaning of meaning, the functions of language, and proper modes of interpretation. By looking (and listening) closely, and by including passages from the Bible and other literary sources, Leithart aims to do for the text what Jesus did for the blind man in John 9: to make new by opening eyes. The book is a powerful invitation to enter the depths of a text.

Many books have been written about human resources. These books usually explain theory or focus on a certain topic. Human resources is a working field, and I believe it is very hard to put theory into practice. External factors, as well as administrative understanding and perspective, generally move human resources applications away from theory. Companies often define human resources under their corporate structure as secondary or other management. Although this situation is different in some of companies, the common approach in the sector takes this direction. Any manager who deals with humans should understand human resources to manage performance better. In this book, I try to show how to achieve that from a human resources and management perspective.

Nothing is more dangerous to be misunderstood than the question, ""What is the human being?"" In an era when this question is not only being misunderstood but even forgotten, wisdom delivered by the great thinkers and mystics of the past must be recovered. Edith Stein (1891-1942), a Jewish Carmelite mystical philosopher, offers great promise to resume asking the question of the human being. In Human and Divine Being, Donald Wallenfang offers a comprehensive summary of the theological anthropology of this heroic martyr to truth. Beginning with the theme of human vocation, Wallenfang leads the reader through a labyrinth of philosophical and theological vignettes: spiritual being, the human soul, material being, empathy, the logic of the cross, and the meaning of suffering. The question of the human being is asked in light of divine being by harnessing the fertile tension between the methods of phenomenology and metaphysics. Stein spurs us on to a rendezvous with the stream of ""perennial philosophy"" that has watered the landscape of thought since conscious time began. In the end, the meaning of human being is thrown into sharp relief against the darkness of all that is not authentically human.""Donald Wallenfang has followed up his wonderful book on sacramental theology with an equally wonderful book on the theological anthropology of Edith Stein. . . . It was the birth of Human Rights Law. Without exception, human rights belong to every single human being. The eighth secretary General Ban Ki-moon clearly found an adequate description to illustrate the significance of human rights while giving a speech at the 2011 Human Rights Day. Besides the significance oftheir existence he focused on their constant development and practicable usage which requires all the nations to exercise human rights. His speech can be put in one significant sentence.
