In 1986, with the advent of the "era of renovation" (doi moi), Vietnam began to experience significant economic growth which has continued up to the present. Geographically, it is particularly the coastal zone of Vietnam which is of paramount importance for assuring the country's ongoing development. However, the coastal zone of Vietnam is a region strongly under stress. Therefore, initiatives have been undertaken since a number of years now in order to establish strategies for the sustainable management of the country's shoreline. For this, good governance will be crucial in order to guarantee successful management strategies and institutions. The present study provides an examination of challenges and opportunities regarding good governance in the coastal zone of Vietnam. The overall goal is to assess the relation between governance and coastal management and to present reasons why Vietnam is in such a strong need of developing an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). To this end, a case study will be presented from Nam Dinh province in the Red River delta of Vietnam.

Tea is the second drink after water. Tea is the name given to the dried leaves of a broad-leaved evergreen plant known as Thea sinenesis (scientific name). This is the most favourite beverage not only of the aristocrats and sophisticated people but also of the common man. This is due to the fact that it possesses certain inherent qualities as a tranquillizer and mild stimulant. Tea is the plantation crop which is grown on plantations covering large estates. It is a very favourable drink in many temperate countries and in many other parts of the world. The greatest tea drinkers are the Chinese, Russians, Australians, Dutch and South Americans. Of late the tea consumption in India has also increased considerably. India is the largest producer of tea, produces about 29% of the total world output. West Bengal is the second largest growing state in India after Assam. The book concerned mainly with the Tea Plantation in West Bengal and its impact on the economy of West Bengal (India).

The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. This book, which draws on the expertise of 21 leading international coastal scientists, represents an up-to-date account of coastal environments and past, present and future impacts of global change. The first chapter of the book outlines key principles that underpin coastal systems and their behaviour. This is followed by a discussion of key processes, including sea level change, sedimentation, storms, waves and tides, that drive coastal change. The main part of the book consists of a discussion of the main coastal environments (beaches, dunes, barriers, salt marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, coral reefs, deltas, rocky and glaciated coasts and coastal groundwater), and how these are affected by global change. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with coastal change. Readership: final year undergraduate and postgraduate-level students on coastal courses in a wide range subjects, including geography, environmental management, geology, oceanography and coastal/civil engineering. The book will also be a valuable resource for researchers and applied scientists dealing with coastal environments. The South-West coastal zone of Bangladesh is actuated mainly by the alluvial deposit from Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghnn(GBM)river channels. The climatic conditions are naturally and mostly controlled by the river in this area. Seasonal floods, heavy rainfall, storm surge and tropical cyclones are common natural calamities in this area. This area is totally agape to the Bay of Bengal through a long coast line. For the geological setting; this area is vulnerable to any types of change, either it may natural or man-made. The changes of climate is mostly affecting the South-West coastal zone of Bangladesh from last two decades through the change of temperature, precipitation, evaporation, sunshine hour, humidity and most of the entire seasonal pattern. The changes of climatic conditions are acutely increasing the frequency of natural disaster and hazard. And all of these changes are creating a huge natural changes. Now a days some development works are active in this area to improve and sustain those changes; This book is looked for something different and alternative ways of development with total consistence and sustainability to adapt with these adamant natural changes.

Goa an important beach resort on the west coast of India has a 101 km long coast line and receives around 23 million tourists every year. The beaches are overcrowded due to the deck beds. Under the guise of renovation or repairs of existing structures new hotels, shops and resorts have come into being. In spite of the stipulations of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Act 1991 the local as well as people in power acquire lands and houses with sea view and violate CRZ rules with impunity. Sectoral practices, partisan policies, unbalanced tourism, and absence of political will have all contributed to the breaching of CRZ. Hence the present study is an attempt to map all the dwellings/ structures/buildings in the CRZ-III along the Goa coast. Remote sensing and GIS techniques have been effectively applied to achieve the objective. Analysis of spatial data reveals that a large number of new structures / dwelling units have come up in CRZ -III after 1991. Calangute, Candolim and Anjuna Villages in North Goa and Palolem in South Goa are found to have more number of illegal constructions along the coast. Therefore these four villages have been chosen for the present study. Field survey conduct.

Since its independence in 1947, India, as a large, diverse, and rapidly changing country, has had to meet federalizing problems of a magnitude unprecedented in history. The result has been a process that combines, modifies, and transforms many established ideas about federalism. Professor Franda deals with the complexities of India's experience by analyzing the politics of center-state relations as they affect one Indian state. He explores the various ways in which central and state leadership groups in India and West Bengal have developed working relationships, and examines the effect of state and regional political, economic, and social conditions on the evolution of center-state behavior patterns.Originally published in 1968.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Marine ecosystem active in West Bengal offshore including ‘Sundarbans’ exhibits an excellent breeding - nursing ground of uncountable marine species. With increasing demand for fish, commercial trawling is intensified very fast by modern bull trawlers specialy in Digha and Shankarpur offshore which is very likely to have destroyed undersea habitat of benthic species forming extensively broad baseline of marine food chain. Richness of benthic biodiversity is proved to be inversely related to the offshore distance because benthic nutrients deposition getting thinner with increasing offshore distance. Higher loss of benthic biodiversity takes place at shallower continental shelf closer to coast because of maximum benthic nutrient deposition at this submarine zone and vice versa. Loss of these species must also endanger the existence of all of their predators causing an irreparable loss to entire marine ecosystem of West Bengal offshore. This study finally chalked out a proper Environmental Management Plan highlighting some curative and preventive measures for the best conservative use of these prospective marine resources ensuring maximum environmental protection of ‘Sundarbans’(World

Traditionally, the law of the sea was divided into the territorial sea and the high seas which accounted for the application of different rules under different circumstances. Concerning the territorial sea, the coastal state enjoys full sovereignty to the right of innocent passage, while under the high seas rules all countries enjoy multifaceted uses of the sea qualified only by the limitations imposed by international law. The development of the exclusive economic zone ended this traditional dualism and ushered in guidelines that are embodied within the text of the LOS Convention. The Exclusive Economic Zone presents to academia and the general reading public a comprehensive study of the EEZ concept as it relates to the LOS Convention and state practice. The Exclusive Economic Zone shows that even through coastal states have the right to develop a 200 miles EEZ and that this right is an integral part of contemporary international relations, it is also true that the EEZ concept is shrouded in legal ambiguities. Using qualitative and inductive methods, the scholarship draws on treaties, official proclamations, government archives, and scholarly works that are germane to the development of the EEZ. Students, scholars, and members of the general public with an interest in international law will find that The Exclusive Economic Zone deepens their understanding of the evolution of the EEZ concept.

On the Swahili coast of East Africa, monumental stone houses, tombs, and mosques mark the border zone between the interior of the African continent and the Indian Ocean. Prita Meier explores this coastal environment and shows how an African mercantile society created a place of cosmopolitan longing. Meier understands architecture as more than a way to remake local space. Rather, the architecture of this liminal zone was an expression of the desire of coastal inhabitants to belong to places beyond their homeports. Here architecture embodies modern ideas and social identities engendered by the encounter of Africans with others in the Indian Ocean world.

Poverty and unemployment are the main problems faced by the rural people of India. Due to illiteracy, small-sized holdings, natural disasters, unemployment, uncertainties, lack of warehouses and communication, prices received by the sample members are not reasonable which has adverse impact on income level. Education and technology are also not up to the mark and these have led to backwardness of the area. Credit is necessary in time and in adequate amount to stimulate the tempo of agricultural production. Money-lenders have been the most important source of credit because it is easily available from then and no complicated procedure is involved. Money-lenders charge high rate of interest and sometimes they even exploit the farmers for his service. To restrict exploitation of farmers by money-lenders, Government took some initiatives and thus, Lead Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and Co-operative Banks were established. But those institutions did not cause sufficient benefit to the poorest of the poor, so the concept of formation of SHGs came into reality. The role of SHGs in rural development in West Bengal context is inevitable.

The life of the founder of the famous frontier forceBritish India gave rise to a number of notable regiments and among them were few which could compare with the individualism, élan, fame and prowess of the Corps of Guides. This magnificent unit was formed in 1847 to comprise both cavalry and infantry and its purpose was to provide reliable men to act as guides to forces active in the field and to act as intelligence gatherers on the troubled borderlands of the North West Frontier. Its men were drawn from the fierce tribal men of the high country of the north of the Sub-Continent and their martial traditions ensured they were troops of the highest calibre. The man called upon to raise and command this exemplary unit was Harry Burnett Lumsden. Born aboard ship in the Bay of Bengal in 1821, the son of a serving officer in India, Lumsden had India in his blood from the outset. He joined the 59th Bengal Native Infantry in 1838 and was engaged in the disastrous First Afghan War at the forcing of the Khyber Pass. British India could only be consolidated as a whole by the subjugation of its most significant military power, the Sikhs of the Punjab and Lumsden fought in both Sikh Wars-being wounded at Sobraon in the first of them in February 1846. It was, however, for his creation of the Guides that he earned his fame as one of the notable figures of British India. This is the story of Lumsden's life and campaigns and it is an invaluable addition to any library of the Raj period.L...

This book is based on a research study conducted in the district of Birbhum of West Bengal, India. The study was conducted in four villages from two CD Blocks of the district. The district Birbhum is one of the backward districts of West Bengal and the economy is totally dependent on agriculture and allied activities. The regional disparity in terms of occupation, literacy rate, communication, availability of market and other facilities, soil fertility, irrigation facilities make a huge difference in the changing pattern of consumption expenditure incurred by the sample households. In this book I have tried to explain how a village is changing with time. How villagers became accustomed with the modern amenities and facilities and how they have been changing their livelihood. In some of the cases it is the impact of globalisation and in some of the cases the modern amenities entered in to the villages with their necessity - to run their livelihood properly. These changes even helped to change the rural economy. On the other hand there are some unchanged legacy already exist in the rural areas - like illiteracy, health indicators, gender inequality.

A large part of the world’s coastlines consists of sandy beaches and dunes that may undergo dramatic changes during storms. Extreme storm events in some cases dominate the erosion history of the coastline and may have dramatic impacts on densely populated coastal areas. Policy, research and historical background are essential elements that need to be interconnected for effective coastal planning and management. This book discusses this framework, with Chapter 1 providing an insight into policy settings and science-policy interactions in the area of coastal risks related to storms and flooding, and integrated coastal zone management. This is followed by a review of the current understanding of the processes generating extreme coastal events, the morphological evolution of coastlines during and after the events, and the methods for monitoring the process as it occurs or for post-event appraisal. The final chapter discusses the importance of historical approaches regarding coastal threats, taking the Xynthia storm as an example.

Contract farming is defined as a system for the production and supply of agricultural or horticultural produce under forward contracts between producers/suppliers and buyers. Contract farming offers the advantage of reduced capital investment, reduced risk of price fluctuation, guaranteed returns and provision of technical assistance to the farmers. The study was purposively conducted in Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, as the state is the second highest producer of potato in the country. Contract farming helped the farmers to diversify their farm, increased the employment opportunity and area under potato. It also helped the farmers to get more net benefit from potato. After engaging in contract farming the farmers used various inputs for potato cultivation more judiciously but not in higher quantity than the non contract farmers. There was not any major environmental disadvantage of potato contract farming except the emergence of new pest and diseases of potato. The knowledge level of the contract farmers about potato production technology and the disease management practices of potato were significantly higher than the non contract farmers..........

A history from 1599 to 1895Lieutenant Cardew's excellent history of the Bengal Native Army is an invaluable reference resource for all those interested in the British in India and the armies of the Honourable East India Company and the Raj period that followed them. This substantial work covers the span of the activities of the Bengal presidency's forces from the very earliest times of its history, but of course includes all its campaigns and battles, regiments and notable personalities—both friend and foe—throughout the turbulent period of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Too many to itemise here, within this books pages the reader will discover Rajputs, Mahrattas, Moguls, Pindarees, Ghurkhas, Burmese, Afghans and Sikhs all battling against the might of the British Empire for dominance of the sub-continent or the retention of control over their own domains. In 1857 the Great Indian Mutiny erupted within the heart of the Bengal Army and this bloody period is described in considerable detail. The post Mutiny period covers the many troubles upon India's North Western Frontier as well as campaigns where the Indian forces of the Queen Emperor were required to fight her wars in other theatres and countries.

Pirates, Ports, and Coasts in Asia. Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Pirates, Ports, and Coasts in Asia aims to fill some of the hostorical gaps in the coverage of maritime piracy and armed robbery in Asia. The authors highlight a variety of activities ranging from raiding, destroying and pillaging coastal villages and capturing inhabitants to attacking and taking over vessels, robbing and then trading the cargo and its people. Generally speaking, what connects these activities is the fact that they are carried out at sea, often in the coastal inshore waters, by vessels attacking other vessels or raiding coastal settlements. Acts of maritime piracy cannot be regarded as being located outside the relevant framework of the coastal zone. Coastal zones have therefore become highly desirable places subject to great social and ecological pressures. Piracy being the most dramatic of marginal(ized) maritime livelihood, this book brings the relationship between pirates, ports, and coastal hinterlands into focus.

Tamil Nadu is India's fifth largest producer of rice, next to West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Cauvery delta region of the composite Thanjavur district in the state is known as the Rice Bowl of South India. Rice is grown in 2.1 million hectares accounting for about one-third of the gross cropped area under diverse environments in the state, like; rain-fed tank, tank, tank cum well, canal (river) and canal (reservoir) irrigation systems. The rice productivity growth had been declining at the rate of -0.40 per cent (during period 1990-91 to 1999-00) as the yields of existing varieties had already been plateauing. Recent breakthroughs in the development of tropical hybrid rice technology had how ever provided an alternative option for raising yield levels for sustained production growth in rice especially in favourable irrigated eco-systems. A nation-wide network on Development and Use of Hybrid Rice Technology - initiated by the ICAR with support from the UNDP,FAO and IRRI. Under this network,TNAU has released four rice hybrids so far, namely; CORH 1, CORH 2 ADTRH 1 and ADTRH 2.Hence, it was decided to take-up this hybrid technology impact study.
