They are defined as something negative and pathological and it is obviously that witchcraft could easily emerged because of the traditional beliefs rooted in the early modern society of Germany. Witchcraft and witchhunts emerged in this period and made the population susceptible to the carrying out of denunciation and elimination of innocent people. The population had been easily influenced by the authorities like magistrates and their fellow citizens. In the following discussion/passage, witchcraft and witch-hunts concerning the early modern Europe will be less prominent rather than the study about witchcraft and witchhunts in early modern Germany. In particular the main focus will stress on the south of Germany because it was the centre of witchcraft and witch-hunts. In addition to that some examples will be mentioned to show special witchcraft and witch- hunt cases. First it will be examined how the term 'witch' is defined shown in a historical, linguistic and an ...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 1999 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: very good, University of Canterbury (Department of Politics and International Relations), 44 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the German national interest in European Economic and Monetary Union. Although not ignoring economic arguments, the analysis focuses on the arguably even more important political benefits and interests. The first chapter introduces EMU from a European perspective, as the next logical step to complete the Single Market and as a source of economic advantages for EU member states. However, it is also an important vehicle for the aim of political union. Hence, in view of Germany′s traditional position in Europe, the progress EMU represents in terms of achieving European unity is a significant factor that led to the unequivocal attitude of the Kohl government favour of EMU.The absolute necessity for Germany to advance the integration process was emphasised by German unification and the resulting political impossibility to refuse EMU as international support for a unified Germany was tied to stronger European integration. In addition, the common currency has benefits for Germany′s foreign trade reliant economy which seem to outweigh the economic doubts. Nevertheless, these concerns did play a role in defining political approaches and have influenced both the opposition′s stance and ...

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject History Europe - Germany - 1848, Empire, Imperialism, grade: 1-, The American Central University (Department of History), course: Empire in Comparative History, language: English, abstract: On November 14, 1897, German marines seized the bay of Kiautshou, a small territory on the North-Eastern province of China, Shandong. It was a sudden coup, conducted without any prior negotiations or warnings by the German side; however, in the same way it was knocked off and taken away by Japanese troops in 1914. During the seventeen years of German occupation, the German colonial administration under the guidance of the German Imperial Naval Office (Reichsmarineamt), spent huge sums of money and committed great personal efforts to transformed Kiautshou from a rural and underdeveloped area into a modern and prosperous German Model Colony (Musterkolonie). Kiautshou was not thought of to be a settler's colony but instead it was to become a naval base for Imperial Germany and an economic center for German industry and trade in East Asia. One of the main characteristics of Kiautshou was the idea of a model colony as a mean of representation and propaganda for Germany at home and abroad. The creation of a model colony was intended to demonstrate a specific German colonialism, where careful planning, professional execution, and public supervision were an example for a modern and enlightened imperial policy in contrast to the private and commer...

One of the greatest challenges in modern physics is to successfully unify general relativity and quantum mechanics. It is believed that if these two seemingly incompatible theories can be unified, then that theory will explain all of the known behavior in the universe. Physics in Theory outlines a unified theory in physics. What is the causal process of matter? What experiment provides empirical support for the unified theory? Is the unified theory a theory of everything? The following project answers these questions as it forwards a unified theory.

Ilka Wiedemann Survival Strategies of East German Companies in a Competitive Market after Reunification

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: The speed with which the Berlin Wall fell on the 9 November 1989 was both surprising and inspiring. No longer would the people of East Germany be held captive under a repressive regime that deprived them, not only of western commodities, but of the most fundamental of human needs, the freedom to thrive. On 18 May 1990, politicians from the East and West signed a treaty creating an economic and social union. This was followed by the Treaty of Unification on 31 August 1990. The dream of one Germany had become a reality. It was now up to the German people to build a unified economy, a task that posed difficult questions – most importantly, what to do with the state owned businesses that comprised the former GDR (German Democratic Republic). The former states of the GDR contain some of the highest growth regions in Europe. Despite this, there is social instability and high unemployment. As of October 2003, the unemployment rate in East Germany was 17.3% compared with 8.0% for the West, and 8.1% for the European Union. While there is a necessity to improve the situation for all of Germany, many hurdles remain. In the case of unified Germany, „Deutschland einig Vaterland” is more than a slogan of unity; it is a statement for economic survival. The aim of this thesis will be to explore the following questions: How did three East German companies – the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine company, the Florena cosmetics company, and the Fit detergent company – surviv...

From 1993 to 1994 advertising expenses grew from 299 to 469 million dollars. Continuous economical reforms and expenditure further contributed to this growth. Consequently, the case of Poland provides an ideal opportunity to study the impact an economy's stage of development has on advertising management (West / Paliwoda 1996, p. 82).Poland also offers huge potentials for its neighbouring countries which is especially true for Germany. From a German perspective it is eminently important to understand the differences between the German and the Polish culture as culture has a major impact on advertising and communication. The above justifies and is reason enough to have a deeper look at the Polish advertising market with reference to Germany. Therefore these issues will be dealt within the following study paper. It starts with theoretical background information on advertising and then continues with a secondary-statistical analysis of major advertisement conditions in the Polish and German markets. The most notable government reforms were, undertaken by the local governments, which engaged in incremental reforms in the 1980s, and only began engaging in NPM after a ten-year delay in the 1990s, when the UK and other countries had started concentrating government reform efforts on engaging multi-stakeholder networks through local and public governance measures.Focusing on the local level of government I attempt to explain the puzzle as to why Germany was a decade behind in adopting NPM measures, and why the initiative to reform public management started primarily at the local level and remains mainly limited to the local level of government. Subsequently, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate to what extent local government reforms in Germany vary from those perused by the NPM pioneer, the UK. The euro crisis is tearing Europe apart. But the heart of the matter is that, as the crisis unfolds, the basic rules of European democracy are being subverted or turned into their opposite, bypassing parliaments, governments and EU institutions. Multilateralism is turning into unilateralism, equality into hegemony, sovereignty into the dependency and recognition into disrespect for the dignity of other nations. Even France, which long dominated European integration, must submit to Berlin’s strictures now that it must fear for its international credit rating. How did this happen? The anticipation of the European catastrophe has already fundamentally changed the European landscape of power. It is giving birth to a political monster: a German Europe. Germany did not seek this leadership position – rather, it is a perfect illustration of the law of unintended consequences. The invention and implementation of the euro was the price demanded by France in order to pin Germany down to a European Monetary Union in the context of German unification. It was a quid pro quo for binding a united Germany into a more integrated Europe in which France would continue to play the leading role. But the precise opposite has happened. Economically the euro turned out to be very good for Germany, and with the euro crisis Chancellor Angela Merkel became the informal Queen of Europe. The new grammar of power reflects the difference between creditor and debtor countries; it is not a military but an economic logic. Its ideological foundation is ‘German euro nationalism’ – that is, an extended European version of the Deutschmark nationalism that underpinned German identity after the Second World War. In this way the German model of stability is being surreptitiously elevated into the guiding idea for Europe. The Europe we have now will not be able to survive in the risk-laden storms of the globalized world. The EU has to be more than a grim marriage sustained by the fear of the chaos that would be caused by its breakdown. It has to be built on something more positive: a vision of rebuilding Europe bottom-up, creating a Europe of the citizen. There is no better way to reinvigorate Europe than through the coming together of ordinary Europeans acting on their own behalf.

Some scholars approached the theme, focussing on a "common historical heritage", which points to a basis for a collective identity (Habermas 2001; Giesen 2003), others based their arguments on political and institutional similarities among European countries like human rights protection, democracy and rule of law (Risse 2001). In other cases, the studies on the topic focussed on the ambivalent employ of the term "identity", arguing its (ab)-use, above all in EU-Treaties, instead of more obviously expressions as "legitimacy" or "sovereignty" (Bruha/ Rau 2000).The aim of this paper is to examine the topic from two distinctive perspectives: a post-national and a postmodern. The paper suggests a sort of "back to the roots" of the en-quiry, approaching the subject neither with pre-existent assumptions nor with the goal to order puzzled arguments. The study will not pursue the question about the existence of a collective European identity, but will search for possible ways and circumstances, in which "identity" in Europe (restricting the focus on the European Union) may emerge. The central question of t...

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1,3, Reutlingen University (Produktionsmanagement), 48 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In times of the EU Enlargement Germany has been faced with steadily increasing freight and transit traffic, due to its geographical position in the middle of Europe. The German expressway system has an overall length of approximately 25.000 kilometers (both directions) and therewith is the longest system in Europe. Overall 1.2 million trucks use the German expressways and cover a total distance of 22.7 trillion kilometers every year. The preservation and further expansion of this system is an important leverage of development for Germany and Europe as a whole. The costs for road construction and maintenance have been rising directly proportional to the transit traffic. Since this burden was only carried by Germany's public, namely by the German citizens' taxes, the Federal Government launched a distance-based toll for all heavy goods vehicles with a total weight of 12 tons or more, driving on German expressways. This so-called "LKW Maut" came into effect on January 1st, 2005 and is a watershed in financing. For the first time the costs for maintenance are allocated to those who predominantly cause the abrasion. Politics call this a better and fairer financing of the infrastructure. Shengzhe Wang True Sale Securitization in Germany and China

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The Master thesis for LL.M. at Goethe university’s ILF titled “True Sale Securitization in Germany and China” is a comparative study about true sale securitization. The initial reason for a comparative study was the similarity of banking centred financial systems in these two countries. Another reason is connected with the True Sale Initiative (TSI), a plan composed by major German banks aiming at improving their financial situation. German banks start to be plagued by the non-performing loans (NPLs) since 2001 due to mediocre performance of German corporations and depreciation of banks’ investment to the east part during 1990s. Facing the competitions from other countries and under pressures from the International Convergence of Capital Measurement and Capital Standards: a Revised Framework (Basel II) issued by the Basel Committee on Banking and Supervisory Practice (Basel Committee) at the Bank for International Settlements, the German banks employed the TSI as one part of the bigger financial reform to regain competition in Europe and worldwide. December 2004, the first true sale securitization was successfully constructed in Germany after German federal government changed some of its formerly unfriendly legal, taxation and accounting rules. The German experiences with TSI can shed some light into how China to develop its asset-backed securities (ABS) market in order to save its heavy NPLs-burdened banks and find alternative funds for its corporatio...

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1,7, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, course: Intercultural communication, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Communication is everything. Nowadays communication is involved in every part of our life. Interactions and interrelations between different people is the basis for social competences, politics, economy, education and many things more. Since we live in a global world we always have to deal with lots of different cultures. And every culture has its own understanding of communication, does use different communication systems. Above that every single human being of a cultural system has its own personality and values. We need a common basis where we can establish competent behaviour. We have to have a look at the collusion to avoid irritations and misunderstandings. Normally intercultural communication deals with differences/ problems between members of different cultures. But this aspect can be transmitted to the communication within one country. A special part of this topic is the situation in Germany under the aspect of communication and cultural differences. Germany has a special position in Europe caused by its history. The separation between East and West is still a topic to refer to. The collusion and the similarities are partially smaller than expected after 16 years of the reunification. In the following essay different aspects of communication and intercultural be...

Bastian Bahnemann Rights issue related discounts in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Law, grade: 1.3, University of Applied Sciences Hannover (Rights issues), language: English, abstract: This work primarily focuses on share price reactions resulting from rights issues in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Using a sample of 417 rights issues between 2000 and 2008 this study confirms earlier evidence that UK rights issue announcements exhibit a significant abnormal negative impact with an average of -2.51%. With a loss of with an average of -1.52% French rights issues had a clear abnormal negative impact, which, however, was lower than that of the UK. In contrast to these findings the recent rights issues in Germany and Switzer-land showed with an average impact of -0.67% and -0.04% no strong negative effect. However, the slightly negative effect of rights issue announcements in Germany and Switzerland clearly differs from earlier studies that that have reported abnormal positive effects. Therefore, the present results confirm predictions of a further equalisation of announcement effects initiated by the harmonisation of equity markets (including the elimination of tax advantages in Switzerland) and legal settings. Furthermore, this study in essence confirms the hypotheses of a positive correlation of debt ratio and of a negative correlation of discount for all four countries. In contrast, neither a clear correlation between announcement effects and P/E ratios nor more pos...

Denis Drechsler Unemployment and Labor Market Rigidities

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Many European countries have experienced a significant increase of unemployment in recent years. Especially striking is the fact that unemployment rates in most European countries are significantly higher as compared to the United States. This paper reviews several theoretical models, which have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. Predominantly, these models claim a link between the poor performance of European labor markets and the high level of market regulation. Commonly referred to as the Eurosclerosis debate, prominent approaches consider insider-outsider relationships, search-models, and the influence of hiring and firing costs on equilibrium employment. The paper presents empirical evidence of each model and studies the relevance of the identified rigidities as a determining factor for high unemployment in Europe. Furthermore, a case study analyzes the unemployment problem in Germany and critically discusses recent reform efforts. Although SOE archives remain closed, the author has used a wide range of other sources to produce what is likely to remain for some time the only comparative study of Britain's direct physical links with resistance in occupied Europe, which is set firmly in the wider strategic and diplomatic context of the war.

Gabi Scholz The role of upward feedback in effective Federal public administration in Germany - as part of the new public management and modernisation strategy

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Merit, University of East London, course: MBA International Business, Postgraduate Programmes - Part Time, language: English, abstract: Recently, private and public organisations have been using upward feedback to meet new challenges in human resource management in public administration. Most of the discussions dealing with the accurate use of 'modern instruments' like upward feedback for the management development process can be found outside Germany. Upward feedback focuses on managerial development rather than having a judgemental purpose. This paper addresses literature research dealing with upward feedback, which suggests that upward feedback can lead to performance improvement. Most research studies discuss the use of this instrument in private companies or in local public agencies. There is almost nothing in the literature about whether upward feedback is used at the federal administrative level in Germany. Consequently, this the paper examines whether the instrument of upward feedback is really used rarely at the federal administrative level in Germany. To analyse whether the instrument of upward feedback is used at the federal administrative level in Germany the researcher designed a questionnaire, which was sent to all 15 supreme federal authorities (the Federal Chancellery and the fourteen Federal Ministries) and to 54 subordinate fed...

We Are Here. New Approaches to Jewish Displaced Persons in Postwar Germany

By the spring of 1947, less than two years after Nazi Germany’s defeat, some 250,000 Jewish refugees remained in the displaced persons camps of Germany, Italy, and Austria. Yet many Jews did not know whether to return to their home countries or move on to someplace else. As a result, these stateless displaced persons (DPs) created a unique space for political, cultural, and social rebirth that was tempered by the complications of overcoming recent trauma. In "We Are Here," editors Avinoam J. Patt and Michael Berkowitz present current research on DPs between the end of the war and the creation of the State of Israel in order to present a more complete and nuanced picture of the DP experience, challenging many earlier assumptions about this group.Contributors to this volume analyze art, music, and literature of the DPs, as well as historical records of specific DP communities to explore the first reactions of survivors to liberation and their understanding of place in the context of postwar Germany and in Europe more generally. A number of the contributions in this volume challenge prior interpretations of Jewish DPs and Holocaust survivors, including the supposedly unified background of the DP population, the notion of a general reluctance to confront the past, the idea of Zionism as an inevitable success after the war, and the suggestion that Jews, despite their presence in Germany, strenuously avoided contact with Germans. Far from constituting a monolithic whole, th...

Geoffrey Owen From Empire to Europe: The Decline and Revival of British Industry Since the Second World War

Renowned industrial expert Geoffrey Owen analyses the complex reasons behind the delayed modernisation of British industry. In 1945, following the economic hardship of the war years, British industry looked forward with confidence to re-establishing links with its traditional trading partners in the Empire, and in the years of reconstruction which followed enjoyed unprecendented growth and prosperity. But the emergence of an economically vigorous and fiercely competitive Europe forced Britain to come to terms with some fundamental industrial weaknesses and to question where her economic destiny lay as the ‘miracle economies’ of France and Germany began to overtake her own.Through case studies of key industries from textiles to pharmaceuticals, steel to electronics, Owen offers a vivid account of Britain’s industrial progress, and argues that since the late 1970s British industry has undergone a painful but necessary transformation which has rapidly modernised the UK economy. At the start of a new millennium, as Britain once again debates its relationship with an ever more unified Europe, Geoffrey Owen provides a timely appraisal of the often troubled path that Britain has taken from Empire to Europe.

Friederich Karl Wiehe Germany and the Jewish Question

Translated by Eckhart Verlag. Annotated by Francis Dupont. First published by the Institute for the Study of the Jewish Question in Berlin in 1938, this book became the standard work which set out to explain the policies of National Socialist Germany to the outside world.Starting with the time of the first anti-Jewish riots in Alexandria to the Age of Enlightenment, this work shows how host nations have attempted to welcome and assimilate Jewish immigrants—but that these attempts have always ended in anti-Semitism caused by Jewish behavior. It then moves on to a discussion of Jewish influence in Germany, starting with a detailed breakdown of Jewish numbers and areas of concentration with the 1871–1919 borders of Germany. In seven sections it explains how Jews:– Dominated the German economy,– Were the most financially corrupt element in pre-1933 Germany,– Dominated the far left, socialist and revolutionary parties, ran the militant movements and were behind the numerous armed attempts to create a Soviet Germany,– Controlled the mainstream political parties during the interwar years,– Controlled the press in Germany,– Dominated German culture—including the literary, film and stage worlds,– Dominated the underworld of sexual and immoral degeneracy which characterized the “Weimar” years, and– Made up the lion’s share of organized criminality in Weimar Germany. Finally, this book provides the answer to the “two thousand year-old problem”—namely that a Jewish homeland is necessary—bu...

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The present work gives an overview of the current situation of diversity management in Germany and brings together the most comprehensive base of knowledge. The aim of this study is to gather the state of research on theoretical approaches, organizational best practice and practical implementation. To rate the current implementation in Germany, companies, especially all 30 DAX-listed companies, were evaluated and Diversity Charter signatures and the appointment of a diversity manager were used as central evaluation criteria. Furthermore, a deductive content analysis examined components of implemented diversity practices. The Diversity Charter was signed by 28 companies and 29 have a person in charge as a diversity manager. This is a slight increase over the previous year, but the number of new signatories in total shows a step backwards. The content analysis shows that almost all DAX 30 companies have established a strategic integration and a focus on themes of gender and cultural diversity were identified. The results are discussed, taking into account theoretical findings, and implications for the business environment are added.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Angewandte Mikroökonometrie / Arbeitsmarktökonomik), course: Topics in Labour Economics, language: English, abstract: Using a large administrative data set, a recent study by Dustmann, Ludsteck, and Schönberg [2009] finds convincing evidence for rising wage inequality in West Germany during the past three decades. Their paper shows that the increase occurred above the median during the 1980s, and was augmented by rising inequality below the median in the 1990s. These results challenge the pervasive conception of the German wage structure being a paragon of stability.Within the scope of this seminar paper, I replicate parts of their analysis using a different data set, namely the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) for the period from 1984 to 2009. Using monthly and hourly earnings constructs, I assess the extent to which the results of Dustmann, Ludsteck, and Schönberg [2009] can be recovered from GSOEP data. I do so by exploring the wage distribution along several dimensions. In addition to this, I analyze composition-constant counterfactual wage densities using the kernel density reweighting method advanced by DiNardo, Fortin, and Lemieux [1996]. A provisional evaluation of my results suggests that I can confirm the majority of findings of the original paper along a qualitative dimension. A quantitative assessment, however, reveals considerable deviat...

One reason for that is the right of free movement within the EU, which was used by a total of 11.8 million people in 2016. However, the public debate on migration in Europe is primarily focusing on international migration from non-member states. In recent years this was dominated by the topic of the refugee crisis, which led to less attention for intra-EU migration. Nevertheless, intra-EU migration is a main cause for the high number of new immigrants, at least for Germany and the UK. In Germany, it has increased noticeable in recent years, while migration from non-EU countries has decreased. One of the most represented foreign communities in receiving countries are often Poles. Back in 2017 for example, Germany had more immigrants coming from Poland than ever before. The enlargement of the EU in 2004 and the connected freedom to work in other EU countries was one of the most important stimuli for emigration in Poland´s latest history. Even before the EU, there were high numbers of emigrants leaving. But the accession greatly enhanced migration, leading Poland to be one of the largest emigration countries...

Andreas Sossong Institutional Asset Management. How Are Professional Investors Affected by Legislature and Corporate Governance.

This study examines the current legislature and best practice corporate governance for institutional investors in Germany and the United States. Differences in investment regulation, compliance and disclosure requirements, as well as expense and tax schemes are identified for insurance companies and the pension fund industry. Based on current academic literature, hypotheses about the impact of different regulatory regimes are derived and tested empirically in a comparison between Germany and the United States over the last five years. Differences in asset allocation between the two countries are determined for both industries. It is shownthat the strict quantitative regulation of asset allocation in Germany has no negative impact on institutional investors' performance, yet it reduces the realized risk measured through depreciation. A principal component regression reveals that asset allocation constitutes a relevant indicator for depreciation and performance in Germany. It can be inferred that the investment regulation in Germany poses little disadvantages for investors while it provides a significant risk reduction. This conclusion is confirmed by practitioners from the pension fund industry in Germany.

The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is a very complex document due to the great diversity of linguistic situations in Europe. However, thanks to its monitoring system, the treaty has become the most important tool for evaluating linguistic minority policy today. The present thesis aims to explain variation between three contracting parties in compliance with provisions of this treaty. A comparative case study was conducted in order to examine the legal status of linguistic minorities in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands. Previous research shows that NGOs play an important role in furthering treaty compliance and effectiveness. In order to understand the reasons for countries' divergent compliance levels, three aspects have been considered: (1) The role of the respective NGOs during the ratification process; (2) the factor of decentralized governance; (3) the use of direct democratic instruments.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,7, Northern Business School, language: English, abstract: Every society is characterized by a certain diversity. The first distinction is in gender, female or male. But that's not the way to describe all people. Adults, children, the elderly, people with different occupations, experiences, interests and backgrounds, they all belong to the society. No one is alike and that makes Europe a continent of diversity. The refugee crisis, the stream of refugees, the wave of refugees is currently contributing to this diversity. These are all terms which we encounter in press, political discussions and social discourse. All of the above words point to difficulties and problems. Especially the term 'refugee wave' associates the image of a natural catastrophe that targets Europe and it's impossible to do anything. This association happens not only in Germany, but also in Europe. In many cases, opinions about this topic are negative and in discussions in social networks these are distributed happily. These views are supported by current violent incidents and led to also violent riots during demonstrations of right- and left-wing groups in Chemnitz. However, these negative associations do not fully describe the situation by only focusing on the negative or threatening aspects and not looking at the positives.
