The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

Noone questions today the increasing role of non-governmental organizations in international relations. The field of refugee protection requires a complex attitude from NGOs, as here they meet with growing reluctance of state actors, whose interests are more formulated by economic and security aspects. That is why NGOs does not only provide first-hand assistance to those in need, but also try to influence state's actions, force them to comply with their obligations, sets up new issues on the international agenda, and cooperates with other actors in policy-formulation. Present essay aims to examine this complex role of the non-governmental actors in international relations, and more particularly in the global refugee regime from both NGO and regime analysis points of view. While this essay proves clearly the importance of NGOs, it also shows those faults the regime actors have to overcome and those areas where closer cooperation is needed between them in order to reach the regime's ultimate goal of “providing international protection and seeking permanent solutions for the problems of refugees”.

Critics of globalization claim that economic integration drains political authority from states: devolving authority to newly empowered regions, delegating it to supranational organizations, and transferring it to multinational firms and nongovernmental organizations. Globalization is also attacked for forcing convergence of state institutions and policies and threatening the ability of societies to chart their own democratically determined courses. In Governance in a Global Economy, Miles Kahler and David Lake assemble the contributions of seventeen leading scholars who have systematically investigated how global economic integration produces changes of governance. These authors conclude that globalization has created a new and intricate fabric of governance, but one that fails to match the stark portrait of beleaguered states. Exploring changes in governance across several policy areas (such as tourism, trade, finance, and fiscal and monetary policy), the authors demonstrate that globalization changes the policy preferences of some actors, increases the bargaining power of others, and opens new institutional options for yet others. By reintroducing agency and choice into our understanding of globalization, this book provides important new insights into the complex and contingent effects of globalization on political authority and governance. The introduction and the conclusion are by the editors; the contributors are James A. Caporaso, Benjamin J. Cohen, Barry Eichengreen, ...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, Göteborg University (United Nations Institute for Training and Research), language: English, abstract: Due to global patterns of migration, economic interaction and political interdependence as well as the emergence of new technologies, communication systems and modes of transportation, civil wars have shifted from being a domestic issue to becoming a concern for neighbouring states and the international community. When local institutions and government structures have not been able to prevent the escalation of conflicts, external actors have intervened to restore law and order and to stabilise the situation. The international community has pursued an increasingly interventionist agenda with the legitimation of intervention by external actors with a view to developing and strengthening local governance. The recognition of the importance of this global-local interplay has been accompanied by a greater awareness of the interdependence and interconnectedness of international, regional and national security. Globalising forces and the existence of glocal governance processes mean that external interventions have become governance bridges with multifaceted implications at both the international and local levels.A unique implication of this state of affair is the increasing interest paid by states and international organisations in weak a...

Why U.S. corporate governance regulation has lost its way, and what must be done to improve it Modern history persuasively demonstrates the inexorable link that binds comprehensive regulation to the global economy. This important book, rather than simply recount a litany of corporate governance failures, persuasively explains why, despite policymakers' best intentions, regulation has failed in the modern era. An objective study intended for a diverse readership, Corporate Governance Regulation unveils the underlying, root causes of regulatory failure. The result: A compelling and original analysis, broadly suited for a global audience of all backgrounds. Written by published, subject-area experts, the authors carefully delineate how U.S. corporate governance regulation, beginning with Sarbanes Oxley, lacks an adequate rational basis, as may be attributed to a non-existent policy dialogue The witnessed result: A conspicuous lack of regulatory efficacy, enormous costs, coupled with paltry benefits The focus is upon reigniting a stalled, non-productive policy dialogue, by eschewing stale, overly-polemicized arguments, as needed to develop a common ground Drawing from an eclectic, analytic framework, governance experts Nicholas Vakkur and Zulma Herrera offer both the professional and global citizen alike a multi-dimensional understanding of issues critical to global economic health. Nuanced and persuasively argued, Corporate Governance Regulation represents a formidable catalyst in the elusive, ongoing quest for global economic stability.

In today’s uncertain world, the concept of global governance has never been more relevant or widely discussed. But what does this elusive idea really mean, and why has it become so important? This pacey introduction sheds new light on the issues involved, offering readers a comprehensive account of competing conceptions of global governance, and evaluating the ways in which rival theories strive to make sense of our complex world. In a series of short, accessible chapters, Timothy Sinclair guides readers through the key perspectives on this crucial topic. In each, he assesses a range of actors and assumptions using real world issues – from global financial crisis and climate change to the politics of gender relations – to show how questions of global governance carry quite specific implications for the everyday lives of people in different parts of the world. Supplemented by thought-provoking ‘problems to consider’, as well as annotated reading guides at the end of each section, the book equips students to make up their own minds which approach or approaches might be cogent and for what purposes. Written with verve and clarity, this compelling introduction brings problems of global governance to life ably showing why and how they are both relevant and compelling for all citizens in the 21st century.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3, Helmut Schmidt University - University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (Internationale Politik), language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionSince the fall of the Barre regime in 1991, Somalia has been the most profound and outstanding example of state failure not only in Africa but the entire world. For almost 20 years Somalia has been lost in a vicious circle which the author of this paper calls "the failure system". It is a system of mutually reinforcing factors consisting of clan violence and a corresponding history of real or imagined marginalisation, the establishment of war economics, various jihads and last but not least the interference of a multitude of external actors. The question of this bachelor thesis is: What role did external actors take in the process of state failure in Somalia? My hypothesis is, that the Somali state collapse cannot be seen as a purely internal phenomenon but rather as a layered systemic process that has been influenced by external actors on a massive scale. The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to outline the role of external actors in the Somali state collapse. Albeit the focus of this work is clearly the external dimension of this conflict, we shall not neglect the internal actors and factions in Somalia. Especially after the Ethiopian invasion of 2006 and the begin of the international anti-pirate mission ...

A comparative, interdisciplinary examination of the mechanisms behind public administration Global Dimensions of Public Administration and Governance is a comprehensive, comparative text on the structure and function of governments around the world. Written by two of the field's leading public administration scholars, this book provides an interdisciplinary perspective and a global, historical, and theoretical examination of the management and governance of the modern state. Readers learn how territory, bureaucracy, and political systems influence policy and reform in over thirty countries, and how these mechanisms affect the everyday lives of citizens. This comparative approach features rich examples of how policy is shaped by culture, and how modern policy principles are filtered to fit a country's needs and expectations. Chapters conclude with comparative analyses that help readers better-understand the role and position of government in the contemporary world, both in democratic societies and less-than-democratic environments. Governance doesn't happen in a vacuum. Those responsible for policy, regulation, and reform take cues from history, current events, and visions for the future to inform thinking on matters that can potentially affect a large number of everyday lives. This book illustrates the thought process, providing the necessary insight these important decisions require. Understand the relationship between structure and function of government Learn how policy is culture-dependent Examine the political and societal contexts of reform Discover the myriad forms of modern bureaucracy The various social sciences provide valuable information and perspectives for those involved in public administration. Those perspectives converge here to form a thorough, well-rounded, examination of the success and failure possible, and the mechanisms through which they take place. Global Dimensions of Public Administration and Governance provides a detailed, wide-ranging look at how modern governments operate, how they got this far, and where they're headed for the future.

Churches and religious communities are actors from civil society. The state sets the framework for their activities, first and foremost by formal legal acts in ecclesiastical law. Besides this field of law, religion policy has increasingly developed into a policy field of its own. Which incentives and steering tools used by the state cause which kind of behavior, which role in society and which self-understanding among churches and religious communities? How far electorates have conscious of their franchise is a big question that they have responsibility to install good governance. Even though the participation rate is law it is not wrong if only electorates who have capacity of rational thinking voted for providing good governance. In this context good governance implies the administration of government should be sound enough for the welfare of the people as a whole. Once if the electorates misuse their franchise or do not care of its effect on the governance the question of good governance shall be irrelevant. If the representatives of the people ignore the aspiration of the electorates who elected with a positive expectation it will show actual attitude. This book attempts to insight the quantum of voters’ consciousness on their franchise through a data-base and the subsequent effect to the governance and public affairs; and to explore the phenomena caused by failed governance in the conflict state with scientific approach that how far the hoi polloi have been living with insecure life on the one hand, and the modus operandi of state actors that often led to uncertainty on the other.

This change in analysis has coincided with a new conceptualisation of civil society; the role of civil society is become more crucial in governance, and especially in pursuing socio-economic and political development in Africa. This book explores changes in Africa's governance processes and the opportunities that the changing context is creating for substantive civil society engagement. It examines Africa's democratic processes highlighting some core aspects of the democratic consolidation endeavours to date. In this analysis, Uganda's contemporary civil society context is used as a case illustration to examine how changing governance processes are creating opportunities for civil society engagement in national policy framework.

Daniel W. Drezner All Politics Is Global. Explaining International Regulatory Regimes

Has globalization diluted the power of national governments to regulate their own economies? Are international governmental and nongovernmental organizations weakening the hold of nation-states on global regulatory agendas? Many observers think so. But in All Politics Is Global, Daniel Drezner argues that this view is wrong. Despite globalization, states--especially the great powers--still dominate international regulatory regimes, and the regulatory goals of states are driven by their domestic interests. As Drezner shows, state size still matters. The great powers--the United States and the European Union--remain the key players in writing global regulations, and their power is due to the size of their internal economic markets. If they agree, there will be effective global governance. If they don't agree, governance will be fragmented or ineffective. And, paradoxically, the most powerful sources of great-power preferences are the least globalized elements of their economies. Testing this revisionist model of global regulatory governance on an unusually wide variety of cases, including the Internet, finance, genetically modified organisms, and intellectual property rights, Drezner shows why there is such disparity in the strength of international regulations.

It is sorely the responsibility of the state to provide security to its own citizens. But sometimes the challenge of failing states in Africa results in ethical attacks against the state from non-state actors. Usually the response could be to condemn, correct, coalesce, command or commend the state to behave accordingly. But such a response especially by the civil society requires a comprehensive analytical framework of its role, hence human security. This book attempts to analyse the role of the civil society in promoting human security in contexts of increased vulnerability. A case study of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance is used given the deplorable context of the decade of crisis in Zimbabwe (1998-2008). This must have book for university and college libraries, for NGOs, researchers and practitioners in peacebuilding, human security, and civil society and even for policy analysts. This is because the book identifies and evaluates strategies in advancing human security by the civil society and then further suggests further factors to consider towards enhancing it. The book gives a glaring clarity of the influence of the civil society and state relations in Zimbabwe.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, University of Auckland, course: International Peace & Security, language: English, abstract: International law historically originates from the need to stabilise relations between people and states. To this day, one of its most classic functions remains ensuring the peaceful coexistence between states. Global history is featured by conflicts between states, and even today there is no shortage of disputes. Besides principles of demarcation of territories and jurisdictions between states, the international law developed a wide range of techniques to resolve conflicts. Two of the major sub-branches of international law in this context are the ius ad bellum and the ius in bello. The former is concerned with the law that governs the use of force, whereas the latter deals with the conduct of the armed conflict itself . The legal abolishment of war was introduced by the United Nations (hereafter "UN"). Nonetheless, according to the Charter of the United Nations of 24 October 1945 (hereafter "UN Charter"), self-defence can serve as a justification for the use of force when certain conditions are met (article 51). Since the Second World War, the face of armed conflicts changed: inter-state conflicts have receded significantly in favour of new wars in which non-state actors play the leading role. Non-state actors are individuals or organisations that have a si...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 2,1, Leiden University (Humanities), course: Internationale Beziehungen, language: English, abstract: This paper seeks to address the persistent problem of integrating democracy and good governance approaches as universal values into external policy-making. To this end, the EU´s state-building policies towards Palestine have been chosen as a case study. Palestine, presently not a sovereign state represents a case of international large-scale peace-building endeavor in a post Cold War context. The Palestinian case is insofar crucial for policy makers as it offers insights into democratization policies where there is no sovereign state to address. Instead, democratic structures and good governance have been established by the EU and the international community as a precondition for its very emergence. The EU´s role among these actors as democracy promoter, state- and peace-builder is therefore interesting as the rationale of its very inception was the establishment of peace. It is a unique example of a Union of sovereign states being built on a territory whose inhabitants have been going to war with each other throughout history. Drawing against this background the paper considers it valid to ask the question of what the EU does regarding the defence/ proliferation of its founding principles in its external relations, especially in an area of geograph...

Multi-stakeholder governance is a fresh approach to the development of public policy, bringing together governments, the private sector and civil society in partnership. The movement towards this new governance paradigm has been most marked in areas involving global networks of stakeholders, too intricate to be represented by governments alone. Nowhere is this better illustrated than on the Internet, where it is an inherent characteristic of the network that laws, and the conduct to which those laws are directed, will cross national borders. Thus momentum has developed to bring multi-stakeholder governance to the Internet, through reforms such as the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). In this groundbreaking and incisive book, Jeremy Malcolm examines the new model of multi-stakeholder governance for the Internet regime that the IGF represents. In doing so Jeremy outlines the state of the regime as it preceded the IGF's formation, and provides a faithful yet accessible account of international law, international relations, democratic theory and consensus decision-making as they bear on the topic. He then builds a compelling case for the reform of the IGF to enable it to fulfil its mandate as an institution for multi-stakeholder Internet governance.

The integration of ten Central and East European countries (CEEC) into the EU as part of the 2004 and 2007 enlargements poses new challenges to EU governance, as the number of countries involved has thereby increased dramatically. However, the actors coming from the new member states also face challenges as they attempt to integrate themselves into EU decision-making processes. This book analyses the attempts of of civil society organisations from the Czech Republic and Poland to engage in EU governance in four policy fields. The guiding question is whether civil society organisations from the Central and East European member states have (or can gain) the capacity for meaningful participation in EU governance. After an introductory part, which outlines the analytical framework and offers a review of the literature, the actors and rules of EU governance are profiled. The third and fourth parts of the book then present case studies. The case studies address the civil society organisations most actively involved in EU governance, namely typical NGOs, trade unions, employers' organisations and business associations.

Blood diamonds, or “conflict diamonds,” have funded rebel movements and terrorist organizations worldwide. Bloodshed over these diamonds, the conflicts they prolonged, and the horrific human rights violations associated with the competition for this natural resource, resulted in an international effort to regulate rough diamonds, and has become an issue for states, institutions, NGOs, media, and the public. Forums were held in 2001, known as the Kimberley Process, to discuss the threat of blood diamonds. With the United Nations’ support, state and non-state actors devised the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, a non-binding agreement to stop the import and export of conflict diamonds. This book examines the utility of four International Relations theories to help explain the existing cooperation of governments, industry, and civil society to address this problem.

Analysis performed in this study confirms most of the expectations regarding susceptibility of districts and geographic/development regions given certain population characteristics, emergence of non-state armed groups along with proliferation of weapons in post-accord period. The overall pattern suggests that human rights violation incidents had declined after signing of an agreement but non-state actors were responsible for most of human rights violation acts in post-accord Nepal. Findings from this study confirms early studies that on human rights situation in Nepal. Nevertheless, this study provides more sophisticated analysis and suggests where one would expect to see more human rights violation and who would be most likely to perpetrate acts of human rights violations.

Charles Doran and Wes Parsons’ innovative power cycle methodology for measuring international power and explaining the onset of conflict spurred theorists to re-examine their assumptions about power. The world, however, has changed markedly in the decades since power cycle theory first emerged. The advent of globalisation, the emergence of powerful regional institutions and the transfer of state sovereignty to transnational non-state actors all suggest that power cycle theory and its twentieth-century assumptions are in need of reformulation. It is now time to embrace new measures of state power – including national innovative power and ‘soft power’ – and to recognise that military power is no longer superior to economic power. It is time, also, to recognise the growing power of non-state actors and to account for their power in the world of states. The reformulation of power cycle theory herein will be of interest not only to scholars and students of international relations but also the lay reader with a curiosity about the present and future of world politics.

Our argument is that civil society should be involved in the five key Areas (among others) which are: information collection and dissemination; Policy development consultation; Policy implementation, Assessment and monitoring and Advocacy for environmental justice. Generally, environmental governance is defined as a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainability as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities political, social and economic. It should be participatory, involving a wide range of stakeholders including government, business and civil society, and emphasizes whole system management.

The Carver Policy Governance Guide series includes six booklets that offer board members a description of John Carver's Policy Governance model of board leadership. Policy Governance enables a board to fulfill its accountability to its organization's «owners,» whether the owners are association members, city residents, company shareholders, or a community of interest. Policy Governance addresses the board's engagement in financial, programmatic, and personnel matters; roles of officers and committees; reporting and evaluation; agendas; and other aspects of the board job. The Policy Governance Model and the Role of the Board Member sets out a clear vision for excellence in board leadership. It gives board members an understanding of the concepts and principles that are at the very heart of John Carver's innovative Policy Governance model. This guide details members' main tasks and presents the guidelines needed to transform a board into an effective group that consistently leads powerfully. The Policy Governance model is based on the functions rather than the structure of a governing board. It outlines commonsense principles about governing that fit together into an entire system. The practices of the Policy Governance board, which are consistent with the principles, allow it to control without meddling, focus on long-term organizational outputs, powerfully delegate to a CEO and staff, and discharge its fiduciary responsibility in a visionary, strategic manner. Because the model is a total system, the Carver Policy Governance Guide series offers boards a complete set of principles for fulfilling their various obligations.

What is the real definition of an Islamic state? How do the majority of Muslims govern themselves? How much do Muslims and non-Muslims really understand about the elements of an Islamic state? How can a true Islamic state function in a modern world? These questions bear heavily on the international community. They dominate the news. They spawn conflict. They generate misinformation. The answers are complex, but finding them is critical. Harnessing the expertise of leading Sunni and Shia academics, Defining Islamic Statehood searches for answers through dialogue, and seeks to define how an Islamic state forms and functions. It examines how Islamic principles bear on a nation's governance, jurisprudence, culture and policies, and measures how Muslim-majority countries meet the definition by analyzing how they deal with the aspects of modern life.Together with a group of eminent contributors, ranging from a retired Prime Minister, a former Chief Justice, and internationally recognized academics and experts on Islamic law and governance, Imam Fesial Abdul Rauf identifies and fulfils the critical need to determine the right balance between institutions of political authority and institutions of religious authority within the context of modern day governance.

Somaliland is an example of a territory that has fulfilled the conditions that are pre-requisite for state recognition in the international system. Somaliland is however, not recognised as a state. Questions abound about why Somaliland finds itself in this situation when there are territories which obtained recognition after fulfilling a fraction of what Somaliland has achieved. This study contributes to answering the aforementioned questions. This study has certain objectives. It delved into the examination of the criteria that is used for the recognition of states in the international system. It also analyses the role of intergovernmental organizations in the non-recognition of Somaliland. The objective of this study is also to make an assessment of the nature of interactions between Somaliland, and other actors in the international system.
