The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. It analyzes the signals set by the energy markets to investors and power plant operators regarding flexible power plant operation and the future requirement of thermal plant flexibilisation, with improvement suggestions. A method for the quantitative, long-term, high-resolution techno-economic assessment of an individual power plant's operational flexibility is proposed. It includes the single unit self-scheduling problem of a merchant power plant solved from a price-taker perspective in the day-ahead, intraday and frequency control markets, as well as a parametric power plant model suited for operational flexibility assessments. The retroactive observation of the merchant power plants' operation strategies in these markets is used to identify best practices in terms of market design for flexibility incentives. The value of operational flexibility improvements is quantified using various metrics, for different technologies and market environments. Despite their sensitivity to market design, technologies and cost structures, these results indicate that if investors further expect a three to five-year return on investment, the existing European conventional fleet is unlikely to experience a significant flexibilization.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Groundwater sampling was carried out by grab sampling method in 36 sampling locations comprised of 34 hand pumps and two dug wells. Groundwater samples for manganese were preserved by adding conc. Groundwater manganese concentrations were estimated by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Groundwater iron concentration from the study area during winter 2012 was in the range of 0.0015-1.85 mg/L (SD±0.36). Groundwater manganese concentration in seven water samples were above the permissible desirable limit of Indian Standards for drinking water (IS 10500:2012, desirable limit for Mn, 0.3 mg/L max.). This elevated concentration of manganese in groundwater from the study area can be attributed to weathering of mineral bearing rocks, mining activities and also to some extent to anthropogenic activities. Spatial distribution of manganese was observed in the study area. Further, shallow, deep and very deep well water had variable manganese concentration. Upper earth surface had lower manganese concentration, however present, can be attributed to anthropogenic activities whereas deeper earth surface had higher manganese concentration that can be assigned to geogenic origin.

A computer program called Energy and Exergy Analyses (EEA) was proposed and built to cover the shortage and overcome the problems of the previous programs. EEA has an interactive form containing many systems which have not been studied in the earlier programs. The proposed program is applicable to any steam power plant. The reversible, isentropic and the actual power of each equipment in the plant are calculated. EEA calculates the thermophysical properties of all supplied streams. It calculates the thermal efficiency, the exergetic efficiency and the exergetic destruction of the power plant. We have been enjoying tremendous benefits thanks to the revolutionary advancement of computing systems, driven by the remarkable semiconductor technology scaling and the advanced processor architecture. High population growth and increased exploitation of groundwater resources causes the degradation of groundwater quality. In today's world GIS has a wide applications in all fields of study. In this study GIS has been applied to evaluate the groundwater quality in the Peshawar district of Pakistan. The study is divided into two parts. In the first part 105 samples were collected in the field and were analyzed in laboratory for different important parameters such as pH, Ec, TDS, Alkalinity (HCO3), total hardness, Ca hardness, Mg hardness, NO3 (Nitrate) concentration, Cl-1 concentration and turbidity . These parameters were spatially modeled and analyzed using Spatial statistical techniques. In the second part a GIS based DRASTIC model was applied to assess the Groundwater vulnerable zones to pollution using six input parameters to the model such as depth to groundwater, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography and hydraulic conductivity. After modeling the area was divided to low, medium and high vulnerable zones.

The concentration of the particulate and SO2 dispersed out from the stack around a typical coal based thermal power plant at Delhi, India have been estimated. Annual average meteorological parameters obtained from India Meteorological Department, New Delhi, have been used for calculating the concentration level in different seasons. Stack height variations and atmospheric stability conditions are found to have appreciable effect. Ground level particulate and SO2 concentrations have been calculated by using point source Gaussian plume model. The estimated SO2 concentrations near power plant in down wind directions are found in critical range while those of particulate are within safety limits.

Approximately 60% of those emissions are attributable to the decarbonation of limestone. A widespread approach for the reduction of the CO2-emissions is toreplace the clinker in the cement by pozzolanic waste materials, e.g. fly ash. The reaction of fly ash is generally slow. Due to this slow reaction cement pastes mixed of Portland cement and fly ash have a slower strength development than pure Portland cement, at least at early ages up to 7 days. The goal of this study was to increase early strength properties of Portland cement/fly ash blends by increasing the early ettringite formation in order to decrease the porosity. Therefore various amounts of anhydrite and laboratory synthesised C3A were added to Portland cement/fly ash systems that contained 30% fly ash. The behavior of these systems in terms of kinetics, phase development and microstructure was studied by means of strength tests, isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, chemical shrinkage, X-ray diffraction, backscattered electron image analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry and thermodynamic modeling. The global warming phenomenon as a significant sustainability issue is gaining worldwide support for development of renewable energy technologies. The term “polygeneration” is referred to as “an energy supply system, which delivers more than one form of energy to the final user.” For example, electricity, cooling and desalination can be delivered from a polygeneration process. The polygeneration process in a hybrid solar thermal power plant can deliver electricity with less impact on the environment compared to a conventional fossil fuel-based power generating system. It is also THE next generation energy production technique with the potential to overcome the undesirable intermittence of renewable energy systems. In this study, the polygeneration process simultaneous production of power, vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) cooling and multi-effect humidification and dehumidification (MEHD) desalination system from different heat sources in hybrid solar-biomass (HSB) system with higher energy efficiencies (energy and exergy), primary energy savings (PES) and payback period are investigated, focusing on several aspects associated with hybrid solar-biomass power generation installations, such as wide availability of biomass resources and solar direct normal irradiance (DNI), and other technologies. In comparison to coal, the combustion of natural gas generates half the greenhouse gas emissions and does not produce harmful by-products such as sulphur, mercury, fly ash and particulate matter. Despite this, the rapid expansion of coal seam gas mining in Australia has raised significant concerns amongst the community. This project aims to determine if the production of CSG at commercially viable rates would adversely impact the environment, and if so, to what extent. An extensive literature review was undertaken and identified three main potential impacts associated with the rapid expansion of coal seam gas. These include; the fragmentation of agricultural land and habitat, groundwater contamination and diminished water supply, and emissions of greenhouse gasses. Case studies from the United States and Australia were also examined. The study found that the majority of literature publications expressed some concern towards the rapid expansion CSG mining in Australia, however a high level of uncertainty exists as to their direct environmental impact. The environment, economic growth and development of Bangladesh are highly influenced by water-its regional and seasonal availability and the quality of surface and groundwater. Surface water of Dhaka metropolitan city is unprotected. An investigation was carried out to study As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn contents and the hazards of these trace metal contamination in pond, lake and river waters of Dhaka metropolitan city. The average concentration of As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn were varied from 0.002 to 0.006, 0.030 to 0.413, 0.227 to 0.690, 0.173 to 0.900, 0.113 to 0.390 and 0.01 to 0.23 ppm, respectively. According to drinking water (potable water), public water, irrigation water and for aquaculture standard As, Cu, and Zn toxicity were not detected. In most cases, the concentrations of Mn and Pb were considered as toxicants. Seasonal fluctuations of concentrations were also found in all samples.

Soil contamination included oil, chemical, heavy metals and organic contaminant. High concentration of chemicals and toxic metals made the soil incapable for any intended engineering works. studies have been performed on contaminated soil and for their stabilization.In this work attempt has been made to study the effect of diesel oil on properties of local soil and then their stabilization with Fly Ash (FA) and Cement Kiln Dust (CKD). The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Joffe (1949) defined soil as a natural body differentiated into horizons of mineral and organic constituents usually unconsolidated of variable depth, which differs from the parent material below in morphology, physical properties and constitution, chemical properties and composition, and biological characteristics. Soil is one of the most fundamental resources for sustainability and survival. It is one of the most important assets to protect and pass on to future generations.Soil contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is increasing day by day because of increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms.For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation.There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: – Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – Novel analytical results of the 25-year investigations of groundwater contamination caused by Chernobyl-born radionuclides – The wealth of data on different modes of radioactive transport in the atmosphere, water, and soils, and along the food chains – The hydrogeological and physico-chemical processes and factors in groundwater contaminated zones – The applicability of commonly used methods of the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability – A unique method of fluid dynamics that involves an anomalously fast migration of contaminants through zones of preferential flow from the land surface toward groundwater – Building confidence in the assessment of migration pathways of radionuclides in the biosphere – Assessment and prediction of the consequences of the nuclear accident, which can shed light on protection from global nuclear accidents – Analogue information for different nuclear waste disposal and environmental projects around the world
