Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , course: PhD Environmental Science, language: English, abstract: Groundwater manganese concentration from the Chandrapur district of Central India was assessed during winter 2012. Groundwater sampling was carried out by grab sampling method in 36 sampling locations comprised of 34 hand pumps and two dug wells. Groundwater samples for manganese were preserved by adding conc. Groundwater manganese concentrations were estimated by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Groundwater iron concentration from the study area during winter 2012 was in the range of 0.0015-1.85 mg/L (SD±0.36). Groundwater manganese concentration in seven water samples were above the permissible desirable limit of Indian Standards for drinking water (IS 10500:2012, desirable limit for Mn, 0.3 mg/L max.). This elevated concentration of manganese in groundwater from the study area can be attributed to weathering of mineral bearing rocks, mining activities and also to some extent to anthropogenic activities. Spatial distribution of manganese was observed in the study area. Further, shallow, deep and very deep well water had variable manganese concentration. Upper earth surface had lower manganese concentration, however present, can be attributed to anthropogenic activities whereas deeper earth surface had higher manganese concentration that can be assigned to geogenic origin.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. High population growth and increased exploitation of groundwater resources causes the degradation of groundwater quality. In today's world GIS has a wide applications in all fields of study. In this study GIS has been applied to evaluate the groundwater quality in the Peshawar district of Pakistan. The study is divided into two parts. In the first part 105 samples were collected in the field and were analyzed in laboratory for different important parameters such as pH, Ec, TDS, Alkalinity (HCO3), total hardness, Ca hardness, Mg hardness, NO3 (Nitrate) concentration, Cl-1 concentration and turbidity . These parameters were spatially modeled and analyzed using Spatial statistical techniques. In the second part a GIS based DRASTIC model was applied to assess the Groundwater vulnerable zones to pollution using six input parameters to the model such as depth to groundwater, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography and hydraulic conductivity. After modeling the area was divided to low, medium and high vulnerable zones.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Characterizing the dynamics of landscape spatial patterns in the Miombo is fundamental to understanding the impacts of changes in landscape structure on ecological processes and functions. Land Cover Dynamics in Miombo Ecosystems examines methodologies for computer-aided classification of Landsat TM data for mapping land use and land cover in Miombo ecosystems in Southern Africa. The work compares supervised and unsupervised methods for classifying Landsat TM and developed a hybrid supervised-unsupervised classification method, Stepwise Thematic Classification (STC). STC substantially improved both the accuracy and reliability of the classification process. Spatial pattern analysis was used to quantify changes in landscape metrics as a result of land cover transitions under different land tenure systems at locations in Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The connections between streams and aquifers can be spatially variable and uncertain due to heterogeneity in geology and topography. During drought seasons, farming activities may induce critical peak pumping rates to supply irrigation water needs for crops. This may lead to increased concerns about reduction in baseflow and adverse impacts upon riverine ecosystems. Quantitative management of the groundwater is a required component in this particular human-nature system to evaluate the tradeoffs between irrigation agriculture and the ecosystems requirements. Forecast of the impact of pumping on river-aquifer exchange depends upon spatially variable hydrogeological parameters, as well as temporally uncertain streamflow. In this study a novel component - systems reliability analysis framework is developed to assess risk. Physical parameters uncertainty is studied in light of the Glover-Balmer (analytical) and MODFLOW (numerical) models, while temporal random streamflow is modeled as a Markov process. Reliability methods have been developed in the aerospace industry and extensively applied in structural engineering, but have only seen limited use in water resources so far.

Farmers in the coastal area of Walcheren, the Netherlands are faced with issues of saltwater intrusion and summer drought. These coastal areas are naturally brackish-saline environments due to Holocene marine transgressions. Farming in these coastal areas relies on the existence of freshwater lenses that float on top of saline groundwater. These freshwater lenses are much smaller than what is typically found in the dunes and are the product of the balance between infiltrating rainwater and saline seepage. This research provides an investigation into the hydrology of the dune area between Oostkapelle and Vrouwenpolder and the freshwater lenses found on the farmlands using geophysical methods and density dependent groundwater flow and solute transport modeling with the numerical transport code MOCDENS3D. The model is further used to test the feasibility of shallow phreatic Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) scenarios. The findings of this research outline a low cost and effective way to store water for later use such as in dry summer months with ASR and has great potential to help coastal farming and irrigation practices in similar coastal settings around the world.

The present study investigates the extent to which European regions converge in terms of innovation performance. The findings indicate that there is no sign of convergence between EU-25 regions. However, when regions are classified according to innovation performance such as low, medium and high performers, then significant convergence occurs. This means that convergence occurs only at the group level, not at the European level.

Mung bean (Vigna radiata L. wilezek) is an important food legume which belongs to the family, Fabaceae (Leguminaceae) and sub family Papilionaceae is extensively grown in humid to arid and semi-arid regions. The ability of Rhizobium bacteria to fix nitrogen from the air (N2) in symbiosis with legumes, huge natural source of nitrogen from the air can be taken up from this symbiotic association. This ability leads to decrease or absence of nitrogen mineral fertilizer application in the field. Therefore, there is need to explore the potential of rhizobia as legume inoculants under agro climatic conditions. Foliar application of NAA is able to control flower drop and improve the flower and fruit setting, nodulation, number of pods per plant, seed yield and harvest index in mungbean with the inoculation of Rhizobium along with NPK application. Inspite of growth regulators spray of certain chemical like potassium nitrate has been reported to play significant role in sources-sink relationship and ultimately increase the harvest index.

Untranslated regions (UTRs) are important regions in genes that are situated at 3´ and 5´ ends and are involved in the regulation of gene expression. UTRs on 3´ end acts as complementary sequences for binding of microRNAs. The length and sequence of UTRs varies from species to species. In this work various conserved motifs in the untranslated regions of the genes have been reported by using software tool. Very little literature is available on the motif studies in the UTRs. This book therefore provides the insight on the presence of motifs with repeated single nucleotide in the 3´ and 5´ UTRs. Some coding genes were also analyzed for these motifs. These motifs show interesting similarities in different species of the genus Caenorhabditis. This finding could possibly be used in the identification of various organisms of same genus. These investigations could be helpful to scientific community working on non-coding RNAs, genomics and bioinformatics. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies.
