Fischer Maitri Managing Freshwater Lenses in a Dutch Coastal Setting

Farmers in the coastal area of Walcheren, the Netherlands are faced with issues of saltwater intrusion and summer drought. These coastal areas are naturally brackish-saline environments due to Holocene marine transgressions. Farming in these coastal areas relies on the existence of freshwater lenses that float on top of saline groundwater. These freshwater lenses are much smaller than what is typically found in the dunes and are the product of the balance between infiltrating rainwater and saline seepage. This research provides an investigation into the hydrology of the dune area between Oostkapelle and Vrouwenpolder and the freshwater lenses found on the farmlands using geophysical methods and density dependent groundwater flow and solute transport modeling with the numerical transport code MOCDENS3D. The model is further used to test the feasibility of shallow phreatic Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) scenarios. The findings of this research outline a low cost and effective way to store water for later use such as in dry summer months with ASR and has great potential to help coastal farming and irrigation practices in similar coastal settings around the world.

Leachate percolates to the aquifer through the soil profile bearing organic and inorganic matters, heavy metals and some other contaminants. Soil columns method used for the investigation of the percolation of the MSW leachate to the groundwater through the soil strata. Soil can play role in delaying of the contaminants, but not preventing them from reaching of the groundwater.

The model is also usedto show interaction between groundwater and surfacewater. A three-dimensional groundwater flow model,with one unconfined layer, was used to simulategroundwater flow in the Lake Awassa Basin. Asensitivity analysis to changes in model parametersincluding horizontal hydraulic conductivity,recharge, and pumpage was made. The study isimportant to start with for developing a moredetailed transient model.

High population growth and increased exploitation of groundwater resources causes the degradation of groundwater quality. In today's world GIS has a wide applications in all fields of study. In this study GIS has been applied to evaluate the groundwater quality in the Peshawar district of Pakistan. The study is divided into two parts. In the first part 105 samples were collected in the field and were analyzed in laboratory for different important parameters such as pH, Ec, TDS, Alkalinity (HCO3), total hardness, Ca hardness, Mg hardness, NO3 (Nitrate) concentration, Cl-1 concentration and turbidity . These parameters were spatially modeled and analyzed using Spatial statistical techniques. In the second part a GIS based DRASTIC model was applied to assess the Groundwater vulnerable zones to pollution using six input parameters to the model such as depth to groundwater, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography and hydraulic conductivity. After modeling the area was divided to low, medium and high vulnerable zones.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. There is no extensive study of the seasonal variation of harvested rainwater as well as its suitability for drinking purpose throughout the year especially during the dry period. The main objectives of this book are to investigate seasonal quality of harvested rainwater, mineral contents and people's perception of rainwater harvesting. This study was performed at Shyamnagar thana under Satkhira district, one of the coastal area of Bangladesh. Groundwater sampling was carried out by grab sampling method in 36 sampling locations comprised of 34 hand pumps and two dug wells. Groundwater samples for manganese were preserved by adding conc. Groundwater manganese concentrations were estimated by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Groundwater iron concentration from the study area during winter 2012 was in the range of 0.0015-1.85 mg/L (SD±0.36). Groundwater manganese concentration in seven water samples were above the permissible desirable limit of Indian Standards for drinking water (IS 10500:2012, desirable limit for Mn, 0.3 mg/L max.). This elevated concentration of manganese in groundwater from the study area can be attributed to weathering of mineral bearing rocks, mining activities and also to some extent to anthropogenic activities. Spatial distribution of manganese was observed in the study area. Further, shallow, deep and very deep well water had variable manganese concentration. Upper earth surface had lower manganese concentration, however present, can be attributed to anthropogenic activities whereas deeper earth surface had higher manganese concentration that can be assigned to geogenic origin.

The connections between streams and aquifers can be spatially variable and uncertain due to heterogeneity in geology and topography. During drought seasons, farming activities may induce critical peak pumping rates to supply irrigation water needs for crops. This may lead to increased concerns about reduction in baseflow and adverse impacts upon riverine ecosystems. Quantitative management of the groundwater is a required component in this particular human-nature system to evaluate the tradeoffs between irrigation agriculture and the ecosystems requirements. Forecast of the impact of pumping on river-aquifer exchange depends upon spatially variable hydrogeological parameters, as well as temporally uncertain streamflow. In this study a novel component - systems reliability analysis framework is developed to assess risk. Physical parameters uncertainty is studied in light of the Glover-Balmer (analytical) and MODFLOW (numerical) models, while temporal random streamflow is modeled as a Markov process. Reliability methods have been developed in the aerospace industry and extensively applied in structural engineering, but have only seen limited use in water resources so far.

For the study of impact of artificial recharge of roof top rainwater on the quantity and quality of groundwater, the geomatic approach was employed for identifying sites for construction of roof top rainwater harvesting structures by preparing various spatial maps. Monitoring and assessment of groundwater levels was carried out in the study area. Normal annual rainfall in the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad is 821mm with unutilized non-committed surplus monsoon runoff. Artificial recharge of ground water through rooftop rainwater harvesting was done by constructing three recharge structures each with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres. A total rainfall of 658.1 mm has been found to be recorded and a total quantity of 23, 96,160 liters of groundwater has been found to be recharged during the four months period in the campus.

Groundwater is the most important source of fresh water supply for drinking all over the world. Groundwater samples from different location of Jhenaidaha Municipality have been analyzed to assess the chemical composition, source rock and quality. The parameter analyzed for the research are pH, TDS, EC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3-, SO42-, PO43-, H4SiO4 and NO2-N. The analysis reveals that the cations and anions of the water shows the order of dominance as Ca2+>Mg2+> Na+>K+ and HCO3->Cl->SO42- respectively. The Na+/ (Na++Ca2+) weight ratio against TDS illustrates that the water is derived mainly from rock weathering; however few samples suggest dominance of evaporation crystallization process. Deduction of source rock demonstrates that carbonate weathering and cation exchange is predominant in almost all over the study area. Piper diagram indicates that the water is rich in Ca2+ + Mg2+ and HCO3- (temporary hard) in the study area. This study reveals that the water quality of shallow aquifers in Jhenaidaha Municipality is quite satisfactory and meets the drinking water standard of Bangladesh and WHO.

The broader objective of the study is to assess the climate induced vulnerabilities and to view their adaptive capacity with the climate change vulnerabilities. Both purposive and simple random samplings were used to conduct this study. Data were collected from 120 respondents through interview schedule technique. In the interview schedule technique, question was asked and filled by the interviewers in face-to-face situation. Climate induced changes such as extreme cyclone, devastating tidal surges, severe floods, tremendous river erosion, excessive rainfall, overwhelming salinity intrusion etc, are occurring more frequently in greater intensities and in an unpredictable manner around the world including Bangladesh. To perceive the vulnerability, the southwestern coastal Bangladesh is selected as a research area where high vulnerability to natural climate is due to its low lying delta. The research mainly focuses on the perception level of the people on climate change vulnerability and its impact on their livelihood patterns. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies.
