Insufficient and feeble coverage by government agricultural extension in Nepal lead to remodelling of thought from supply driven government extension towards more demand-driven equity based pluralistic and more collaborative extension. In the context, evidence in favour of partnership was produced in Chitwan district by DADO (a GO) and LI-BIRD (a NGO) since 2000 for three years. This fact evolved through a survey conducted in Chitwan and Nawalparasi of Nepal. It was found that, irrespective of type, the success of extension depends on the quality and relevancy of innovation to the farmer and locality. Likewise, proper selection of partnership organization, innovation with complete package were other crucial factors. Partnership extension was assessed with four parameters-extent of adoption, productivity, and income from agronomical crops and cropping intensity and they depicted superiority of partnership over non-partnership in the area. For the purpose, questionnaire survey was conducted with 120 farmers in regard to four crops- main season rice, spring rice, lentil and kidney bean and two recommended technologies- improved varieties and the seed priming technology.

By reviewing thecontributions from the neoclassical and endogenous growth theory and empiricevidences for the link between ICT and economic growth, the paper clearly concludesthat ICTs facilitate economic growth, principally by providing incentives for capitaldeepening and increasing productivity through rapid technological progress. However, the impact on growth is more extensive from the long-term ICT use and networking that though requires appropriate ICT investment and complementary efforts in order that spillovers and productivity improvements are triggered and exploited totally. This paper derives the key determinants and interacting factors that, in the corresponding correct synergic combination, promote ICT's impact on growth-generating processes. For a variety of reasons, the states of these factors in developing countries provide a less ICT favourable environment for taking advantage from ICTs. These economies exhibit a lower stock of human capacities and per capita capital to trigger the productivity benefits from the ICT use. Therefore, the level of effort is higher than in the developed world to receive...

In this study we estimate the total factor productivity growth of Pakistan's commercial banking sector for the period 1992 - 2000 by bringing together the supply and demand sides of banking services. We employ the translog cost function that includes inputs like labour, capital, operating cost and deposits. The two outputs of the banking sector considered for analysis are loans, advances and investment, and contra accounts. The study provides estimates for the total factor productivity which has shown an upward trend for the period under consideration. The results obtained suggest that the total factor productivity of Pakistan's commercial banks has been increasing since the start of the various banking sector reforms in the 1990s, but growth has followed a fluctuating pattern. It also determines growth for each year and sheds light on the performance of the banking sector in different periods in the light of different phases of reforms. The decomposition of TFP shows that the scale effect is the most critical factor in total factor productivity growth followed by output effect and technical change effect.

Salt stress of arable land is an increasing problem of many irrigated, arid and semi-arid areas of the world where rainfall is not sufficient to leach salts from the root zone, and it is a significant factor in reducing crop productivity. The United Nation Environment Program estimates that approximately 20% of agricultural land and 50% of cropland in the world is saline. Sodium chloride is the most soluble and abundant salt released. These soils have high pH, poor infiltration and permeability, poor physical properties and offer high mechanical impedance to the growth of roots. Salt accumulation in soil induces physiological and metabolic disturbances in crops affecting development, growth, yield and quality of crops. When the plants are subjected to salt stresses the balance between the production of active oxygen species (AOS) and the quenching activity of antioxidants may be upset and oxidative damage may result. This results in the reduction of growth and yield of wheat plant.Wheat is a salt sensitive glycophyte. Foliar application of sodium benzoate mitigates the adverse effects of salinity on wheat. Sodium benzoate acts as an efficient hydroxyl radical scavenger.

This book is the result of the study carried out in Narayani River of Chitwan National Park from 2012 to 2013 to investigate the habitats and abundances of the gharials. Altogether a total number of 38 gharials including 3 hatchlings, 8 juveniles, 12 sub-adults and 15 adults were recorded. Only one breeding male was observed and reflects the critical condition for the breeding of gharials in the wild within Chitwan Nationl Park. The abundance of the gharials were restricted in 2 areas, namely Khoria Muhan and Velaunji due to suitability of the habitat conditions and low human disturbances. The Basking activities in relation to depth showed that > 80 % of the gharials selected sandy banks. Among the 2 populations, the gharials in Khoria Muhan preferred shallow to moderate depth of water because of presence of braided channels in the area. In the downstream watercourse of Velaunji, the gharials select deep water course of the main channel. This book reflects the overall status of gharial conservation in Narayani River and contains the information on various aspects such as the habitat requirements, population status, nesting ecology, threats and conservation management.

Some heavy metals are essential macro-nutrients (trace metals) for normal plant growth. Their deficiency or toxicity poses adverse effects on growth and metabolism of plants. The elevated levels of these heavy metals contaminate the environment and cause great environmental problems. Plants exposed to excess concentration of a heavy metal, accumulated it in their tissues often to the toxic levels, causing a reduction in growth, biomass, yield-productivity and metabolism. Hence, keeping this view the study of impact of heavy metals on growth and metabolism of crop plants should be taken with goal to achieve high growth and yield of crop plants improving living of standard.

The differences in relative industry productivity across countries are of interest and importance for several reasons. The difference in total factor productivity (TFP) explains comparative advantage, international differences in price structure, and gaps in income and growth across countries. Productivity comparison by industry is attracting interest because the overall TFP comparison to the economy has strong assumptions such as the same production function and identical factor prices over all industries. Irrespective of the sizes of manufacturing industries in the economy, the industries are important contributors to economic growth. The reason is that manufacturing generates much new technology and has big spillover effects on other sectors of the economy. Productivity comparisons across countries require a multilateral productivity index based on the Malmquist index. This book explores multilateral TFP comparison of manufacturing industries in 12 OECD counties since 1980 and identifies changes in TFPs over time and across countries.

Traditional growth theories have been emphasizing foreign aid and trade as important elements of growth for developing countries. However, in most of the developing countries this did not materialize. Endogenous growth theory (EGT) proposes for developing countries to accelerate their development by pulling themselves into the information economy through more efficient use of available resources, especially human capital. The notion of EGT is focusing on long run development as determined by systemic forces. According to traditional neoclassical models, accumulation leads to diminishing returns to scale; EGT, however, suggests that human capital development entails a positive relationship between scale and productivity, thereby outweighing the impact of diminishing returns while implying growth in form of spillovers with increasing returns. Spillovers occur when input accumulation causes positive effects on productivity and other factors without cost or reward; thus, productivity rises offsetting diminishing returns. Making better use of material as well as human resources and technological change becomes a major contributor to growth in the long run on a sustained basis.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: A3, Hacettepe University (Department of Economics), course: International Political Economy, language: English, abstract: Growth economics is the branch of economics answering questions related to what are determinants of economic growth; whether is it possible to reach a maintainable growth rate on the long run, if it is preferable to let governments interfere in market performance in order to fasten rates of economic growth. Harrod and Domar attempted to answer these questions through applying Keynes economics for economic analysis. They found that savings and investments stable rates are the key for rapid long term growth especially in developing countries. Therefore, government intervention was needed to help stimulate savings and investments. Years later, Solow and Swan attempted to answer same questions through their neoclassical growth model. In this model, it was assumed that a maintained rising saving rates leads to transition from slow growth into fast growth path. This meant a focus on technological progress. However, part of the growth was not explained by growth in production factors which are capital and labor. Solow stated that this unexplained factor was the residual or total factor productivity. Therefore, government policies were assumed to be effective on aggregate output not on growth rates.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 80, University of Westminster, course: BSc in Economics with Finance, language: English, abstract: The initial post-soviet union period has brought Russia a longest path towards expected economic growth, much of which are explained by external factors. The paper applies the neoclassical economic growth theory to the Russia's economy during 1990-2013, explaining the importance of foreign oil price changes, inflow of migrants and its geostrategic location towards global trading - including arm sales to notorious North Korea and Iran - to its annual output growth. I also explained the relative correlations between domestic, internal variables, such as changes in legislation/tax reformations, savings and the growth rates achieved periodically for comparative reasons. Future forecasts approved that the growth has been stabilized in a near-term and will become increasingly more depended on the number of Central Asian and other area migrant workers as long as the negative spread between birth and death rates hold in the long-term. And investment in IT industry and attracting foreign hi-tech investments are highly recommended to increase the factor productivity and lessen the oil dependency in the long term. A regression results on the Cobb-Douglas production function also proved our findings by putting more prominence on labor and technology, as the abundance of natural ...

Wheat encounters severe salt problems in comparison to rainy season crops because of high salt concentration which is built up in the root zone owing to high crop transpiration or by the use of saline water which adversely affects the growth of plant due to osmotic effects, ionic toxicity, nutritional imbalances and physico-chemical degradation of soil. Although reclamation is a solution to this problem but scarcity of irrigation water, financial constraints and lack of drainage facility hampers its implementation. In such an eventuality, breeding for salinity tolerance is the only admirable approach. Available information on genetic architecture of yield and it's contributing characters of bread wheat for salinity conditions is very less; thus it is necessary to study the genetics for yield and related characteristics and their inheritance under salinity conditions. The ensuing investigation were undertaken to analyse three crosses of wheat including salinity tolerant parents under saline and normal environments with the relevant objectives like estimation of the magnitude of gene effects for yield and its contributing characters in three crosses of wheat for improving tolerance.

Wheat is the second most important staple food after rice consumed by 65% of the population in India. Fertilizer plays a leading role in increasing crop production by almost 41%. Among the primary nutrients, nitrogen plays an important role in plant metabolism by virtue of being an essential constituent of structural component of the cell and many diverse type of metabolically active compounds. It is also a constituent of chlorophyll, which is important for the harvest of solar energy. Nitrogen is liable to lost through leaching, volatilization and run off during crop period. Further, crop requires N throughout the growth period. Potassium plays an essential role in plant growth and metabolism. It activates enzymes, maintains tissue turgor pressure, regulates stomata closing and balances the charge of anions. When applied in soil, it aggregates with clay particles so slowly release in soil. So, split application of nitrogen and potassium is seems very important and essential to be studied for wheat crop.

Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) in Nepal was implemented in 1990s with the objective of transferring the irrigation management to the grass root level. It is clear that the management has been transferred to the community, but it is not clear as to how the objectives of PIM are being met. The study takes place in the two communities in Chitwan, Nepal: Chainpur and Pithuwa.Although the idea and the objectives of the PIM seemed very attractive, it is questionable as to how participation is taking place at different levels in the two communities. Taking into account the definition of participation and empowerment, the study shows that with the different cultural background and social difference, the farmers at different levels in the communities are not empowered and have no full pariticipation in the decision making of the management of the irrigation systems. On top of that, the study also shows the influence of the political structure of the country which is embedded in the two communities affecting the participation and empowerment of the farmers at different levels.

Pruning is defined as the management of plant structure and fruiting wood and it is considered one of the main factors affecting fruit trees production. There are many objectives for pruning i.e. controlling the direction of growth, developing a strong framework, controlling the amount of growth, improved productiveness, improving quality product, utilizing space efficiently and increasing the usefulness of plant. There are three main systems of fruit trees training (i) Central leader system, (ii) Modified leader system, (iii) Open center or vase system. Also there are several kinds of pruning i.e. heading back and thinning out, fine and coarse pruning and root pruning. However, it is important to select the suitable training system and kind of pruning according to the target of the pruning to reach optimum vegetative growth and maximum yield with high fruit quality. On the other hand, population adjustment (plant distribution or planting density) is very important factor affecting fruit trees production. We can reach the optimum usefulness of the planted area by us...

Challenge of wastewater management is increasing with rapid population growth in urban areas. Rivers are heavily polluted as more than 90 percent of wastewater is being discharged directly without any treatment in many developing countries. Urban centres of Nepal are facing the same problem. A community-based DEWATS (decentralized wastewater treatment system) as a pilot and demonstration project was initiated by an NGO in Madhyapur Thimi municipality with an attempt to tackle this situation. After construction had started in Siddhikali, local people objected the construction saying that it would pollute the local environment. Efforts were made to convince the local people but were in vain. Sunga people, nearby of Siddhikali, requested for the construction of the system in their vicinity. This research aims at studying social acceptance and its role in implementation of community-based DEWATS.

Nowadays, Salinity and Allelopathy are the key factors causing decrease in growth and productivity of almost all the crops. An alternative approach for coping with salinity and Allelochemical stress could, therefore, be to attempt to supplement essential sodium antagonistic minerals through foliar application. This idea behind the present work is to diminish effect of salinity and allelopathy in plant to a tolerable level. The aim of the present study was to assess as to whether foliar applications of micro nutrients were effective in inducing salt stress tolerance in sunflower plants. Keeping this in view, an experiment was carried out to study the interaction of boron (B), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) on growth and physiology of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus. L)plant.

Crop production in semi-arid dry land areas of Ethiopia is totally dependant on erratic rainfall - uneven in distribution, torrential in intensity, low in amount during crop growing season and variable from year to year. This results in unpredictable agricultural production in most of the years and occasionally total crop failure. Therefore, selection of appropriate in-situ water and soil conservation methods such as tied-ridge and mulching with suitable planting method are of paramount importance to increase crop productivity in the area. Hence, the effect of mulching and planting methods on growth, yield and yield attributes of sorghum were studied during 2006 (July-November)at Alamata district. In this study, tied ridge with furrow planting and application of 6 t/ha mulch generally gave better vegetative and reproductive growth and higher grain yields of sorghum than the other treatments. This advantage of tied ridges with furrow planting and 6 t/ha mulches might be due to more water accumulation in furrows, most probably by reducing soil water losses and evaporation which later allows to infiltrate down to the deeper soil profile which could be easily accessed by sorghum roots.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The increase of metals pollution in soil is a worldwide problem that effects the health of humans and environment. The use of green technology such as phytoremediation is one the environmental friendly technique, in which plants and other microbes are used to reduce the level of metals contaminants in soil and lower its uptake towards plants tissues. Studies reported a number of cereal crops such as wheat and medicinal plants like alfalfa accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at higher concentrations. In the present study, we investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat and alfalfa plants with the increase of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in soil. After eight weeks of pot experiment, roots colonization, shoot and root biomass, growth, heavy metals contents and other biochemical parameters were assessed. The results indicated mycorrhizal inoculated (M) plants performed better at moderate Zn and Cd concentrations. In addition, higher phosphorus contents were observed in M treated plants as compared to NM plants. Results indicated that AMF inoculum exhibit different tolerance strategies to reduce metals toxicity in host plants. The effective mycorrhizal symbiosis was observed with wheat and alfalfa plants and can be useful for phytostabilization of metals contaminated soils which can play a vital role in increase of plants prod...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 1,0, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Faculty of Economics & Management), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes the two economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg, questioning whether their economic growth can be explained by concepts of endogenous growth theories.South Tyrol and Luxembourg are two quite similar economies in terms of size, population, cultural diversity and scarcity of natural resources, but yet very different in matters of economic growth, income per capita and economic specialization, which makes them an interesting sample to test for growth factors. Since endogenous growth theories, in contrast to neoclassical conceptions, provide a much broader range of tools to handle endogenous technological change, innovation and other factors, they are better suited to analyze growth factors. Therefore, this thesis first draws a summary on the evolution of endogenous growth theories including an outline of the most important contributions. It is shown that the factor "human capital" plays a major role in most models. Subsequently, the second part of the thesis deals with the economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg in detail, evaluates historical economic growth, identifies tourism and financial intermediation as their main driving forces and asks whether human capital could be the moving power behind them. The method of choice for measuring is the co...

The investigation on wheat was conducted with the objective to study variability for spot blotch resistance caused by B. sorokiniana in the wheat germplasm lines and to find out the distribution of resistance across various height and maturity groups. Observations were recorded for disease severity (%) as well as using 0-9 scale. Disease was rated three times i.e. at growth stages 69, 77 and 83 (Zadoks et.al.1974) to calculate AUDPC. Plant height, days to maturity and test weight was also recorded for each genotype. A wide variability for resistance to spot blotch was observed in the wheat lines screened.15 lines were found to have resistant. The proportion of moderately resistant, moderately susceptible and susceptible lines were 47%, 43% and 6% respectively. The useful resistant lines having dwarf stature and early days to maturity were 15. These lines can be exploited in crossing programme to developing spot blotch resistant early maturing lines suited to rice wheat cropping system of NEPZ.Differential reaction was also observed in same line that supported the idea of independent gene control.

These ‘ization’ raised serious issues of equity and access. Without pre-planned policies, private sectors come on the screen and prove unanticipated growth and acceptability in the market moving from the periphery to a dominant position throughout the globe and Nepal in particular. It performs more, different and better function whereas the former is dominant in Nepal attributed by secular, demand absorbing, vocationally and commercially oriented HEIs. Due to financial austerity, the public institutions are moving towards internal and program privatization. It shows that privatization enhances enrollment of 18-25 age group population along with the participation of girls’, marginalized and differently able people. It enhances region related equity, program access and outcomes of educational participation by creating gaps of well-off society and the poor. The analysis should help to shed some light on privatization of higher education and its implication on equity and access.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is second most important food grain crop of India and is associated with the food security of the country.India needs more food around 105 million tonnes for feeding the increasing population by 2020 A.D. and this demand has to be met primarily from wheat crop as this is the only assured food crop which production and productivity could be sustained. Further wheat area is decreasing every year and there is very little scope for expansion of area in the future. So there is urgent need to vertical increase in yield per hectare to ensure household food security.Herbicide rotation and use of herbicide mixture are two major strategies to prevent the selection of resistant biotypes of a weed species. Herbicides with different mode of action when mixed together, bind to different target site in weeds and prevent the probability of target site resistance in susceptible species. Today, most of the commercially available herbicides are mixture of grassy and non-grassy herbicides and have efficiency against these types of weeds only. Therefore, targeted weed control mixtures are required to prevent resistance in one or more weed species.

In the present context of blackouts and severe power shortage it is only explicable that Nepal, among other alternative energy sources, is trying to develop its own wind power. However, lots of factors seem to be impeding its development. Therefore, in order to understand and explore the possible routes to success for the wind power development in Nepal, this book looks into the close neighbor, India and investigates its relative success in Wind Industry. Upon analysis on Indian success on wind technology with regard to the contribution of low carbon technology transfer, it was observed that India effectively assimilated wind technology from abroad following a range of initiatives. Further, exploring the issues related to wind power development in Nepal, illustrated that similar initiatives are required in Nepal as well. Meanwhile, one could also agnize the potential of Nepal-India collaboration in the development process of wind technology in Nepal. This book is thus expected to be useful to wind energy developers and promoters trying to bring wind technology into mainstream in the developing countries and also to low carbon technology transfer advocates.

Book Series: "Increasing Productivity of Software Development":In software development, productivity is a measure of how much functionality can be developed in a given time and in compliance with specified quality criteria. If an increase in productivity succeeds, this increases the scope of the developed functionality and reduces the required time. Both features are desirable because software is the stuff innovations are made of. IT haschanged almost all areas of life thanks to fundamental innovations. Our future will be dominated by virtualization and smart helpers, that is, devices equipped with intelligence. This makes software development a key competence. Today, for companies that develop software, productivity as well as time and quality, are critical success factors.By introducing standards and automation, productivity in software development has been demonstrably increased by a factor of 20. The reutilization of functional and technical components has already enabled measurements of a factor of 100. Such performance differences are only reproducible by measurements and the consistent use of measurement results within a management modeldesigned for continuous optimization.Part 2:Management Model, Cost Estimation and KPI Improvement:This book describes a model based on three key performance indicators:productivity (measured using the measurement methods described in the first book), cost and quality. It explains their cyclical collection, analytical evaluation ...

Social exclusion is directly interlinked with caste discrimination and untouchability which has resulted in the educational exclusion. Thus without elimination of all forms of caste based discrimination in the societies, it is not possible to apply and achieve the inclusive education in Nepal. There is functional relationship among society, education and social transformation. Progressive function of education focuses on the transformation of society from its status quo through abolishing mal-cultures and malpractices. As Nepal is in the transitional phase of state restructuring and transformation, it is high time to think seriously on the educational issues of Dalit communities by addressing them through categorizing their issues into two broad perspectives i.e. practical and strategic issues.

Community forestry program in Nepal evolved as an important and innovative approach to governance that facilitates the forest users to participate in the forest management and receive the benefits from the participation. This research aimed to assess the participation and benefit sharing from the gender perspectives in community-based forest management programs in Chitwan district of Nepal. The study revealed that role of the women is confined to plantation and silvi-cultural activities where as men are more involved harvesting, distribution and management activities. Although women were able to get representation through the reserve seats in CFUG EC, the decision making was influenced by the men in the mixed CFUG group. Even though the policy aims to improve participation of women in decision making, still various factors affect their participation and decision making capacities. Overall, it is seen that the CFUGs have contributed to the development at community level but still the CFUGs are not able to contribute effectively at the household level.

Logically organized and clearly written, Evo-Devo of Child Growth: Sets a solid foundation of principles such as evolutionary thinking in medicine and child growth, life history theory, and heterochrony and allometry Examines the relationship between child growth and the theory of life history Applies evo-devo theory to fetal growth, infancy, childhood, juvenility, adolescence, and preadulthood Explores the trade-offs and adaptive phenotypic plasticity during transition periods Explains the role of life history theory in understanding and diagnosing growth disorders such as Down syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Silver-Russell syndrome In addition to the author's own analysis and observations, this book also features notes from leading clinicians and evolutionary biologists, offering additional perspectives on the relationship between evo-devo and child growth and development. Evo-Devo of Child Growth provides a new perspective for evolutionary biologists to understand the phases and transitions of child growth. Moreover, it offers a new approach to help clinicians to better understand and diagnose a broad range of child growth disorders.
