A complete guide to evidence based interventions for children and adolescents The past decade has witnessed the development of numerous interventions proved to be highly effective; several treatments are now considered to be «well established» or «probably efficacious» interventions for children. Given the range of providers working with children—clinical psychologists, child psychiatrists, clinical social workers, school psychologists, and marriage and family therapists—this book is designed to provide all professionals the information they now need about the use of these evidence-based interventions (EBIs), as well as the evaluation criteria used to determine their efficacy in in meeting the mental health needs of children. Alfano and Beidel have assembled a team of experts to write the disorder chapters. Each chapter begins with an overview of the disorder then delves into evidence-based approaches to treatment, the impact of parental involvement, case-by-case modifications, progress measurement, and clinical examples. In overview chapters the editors cover: The role of development in treatment planning and implementation Dissemination of EBIs into school and community settings The use of controversial therapies with children Emerging methods of service delivery and access improvement Comprehensive Evidence Based Interventions for Children and Adolescents provides clinicians, researchers, and students alike with the theoretical, conceptual, and practical skills to provide children and adolescents with the best care possible.

All stages are important in a person's life, whether it is infancy, childhood, adolescence or adulthood, but arguably the most sensitive stage is adolescence; which starts at around 13 and ends at approximately 19 years. It is the stage when the urge of life reaches its highest peak. Accidents, Natural death and conflicts are creating generations of orphaned children. In addition the loss of a parent, orphaned children may face many hardships during their adolescence including decline in health, nutrition and psychological wellbeing. The number of children estimated to be orphaned due to all causes is estimated to be between 143 million and 210 million (UNICEF, 2012). Children and adolescents in particular are at increased risk for unresolved or complicated bereavement because of their development, vulnerability and emotional dependency. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the differences in self-concept, mental health and academic achievement of orphan and non-orphan adolescents. The study adds to the existing literature and will become a guideline for researchers, educators, administrators and counselors to guide the students in a proper way and to frame the suitable educational environment where the adolescents can be accommodated and their self-concept, mental health and academic achievement may improve.

An invaluable resource for adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosaThere are few things more difficult for an adolescent than battling Anorexia Nervosa (AN). While family, caregivers, and friends can support them to eat and recover, psychological recovery is a solitary journey clouded by fear and uncertainty where they are overwhelmed by feelings of guilt, shame, and disgust about who they are and how they look. This book has been written specifically for the adolescents who are on this terrible journey. The authors promote the view that adolescents deserve to be fully involved in their treatment, to be heard, and to be given a voice to tell their story. It is through being understood by others that they can then understand themselves and make progress on their journey to recovery. This book emphasizes the crucial need for adolescents to develop a deep sense of who they are and an awareness of the many valuable resources which they can draw upon despite their internal conviction that they have none.Every aspect of AN is addressed with a focus on helping adolescents understand that they do not need the illness to function. It helps them explore ways to stand up to AN instead of being captive to the illness and provides multiple methods for overcoming significant obstacles that AN puts in their way. Most importantly, it outlines a framework of psychological support for adolescents during the recovery process. The information in the book is based on the latest evidence and the...

Evaluation has always played a major role in information retrieval, with the early pioneers such as Cyril Cleverdon and Gerard Salton laying the foundations for most of the evaluation methodologies in use today. The retrieval community has been extremely fortunate to have such a well-grounded evaluation paradigm during a period when most of the human language technologies were just developing. This lecture has the goal of explaining where these evaluation methodologies came from and how they have continued to adapt to the vastly changed environment in the search engine world today. The lecture starts with a discussion of the early evaluation of information retrieval systems, starting with the Cranfield testing in the early 1960s, continuing with the Lancaster "user" study for MEDLARS, and presenting the various test collection investigations by the SMART project and by groups in Britain. The emphasis in this chapter is on the how and the why of the various methodologies developed. The second chapter covers the more recent "batch" evaluations, examining the methodologies used in the various open evaluation campaigns such as TREC, NTCIR (emphasis on Asian languages), CLEF (emphasis on European languages), INEX (emphasis on semi-structured data), etc. Here again the focus is on the how and why, and in particular on the evolving of the older evaluation methodologies to handle new information access techniques. This includes how the test collection techniques were m...

How do people evaluate in daily life? This issue broaches this topic to better understand this dimension of being human, to develop evaluation theory, and to improve extraprofessional and professional evaluation practice. As part of a larger study addressing these issues in the lives of many professional evaluators around the world, case studies of seven early evaluation theorists and practitioners from North America were conducted. This issue contains articles with stories of some of their evaluation life experiences told and interpreted by these individuals, with commentary by an eighth evaluator. Themes that cross the cases are proposed, and responses by the individuals highlighted are shared in a final article. This is the 150th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Children with hemiplegia often suffer from a wide range of psychological difficulties more than merely a physical disability. Parents of these children are increasingly concerned about the behavioural and emotional problems accompanying hemiplegia, particularly when these children grow up to their early adolescence. Behavioural problems in hemiplegic children characteristically present with irritability rather than deliberate violence and delinquency. General practitioners and paediatricians who work with hemiplegic children should have a high index of suspicion for irritability, particularly in those who have concomitant seizures.

There has been a dramatic increase in HIV survival since the advent of combination antiretroviral treatments(CART) for children and adolescents. Common psychiatric presentations are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Depression and Anxiety Disorders. Adolescents particularly present with risk behaviours such as substance use and unsafe sexual pracices. Dr Nassen has extensive experience working with HIV positive children resident in Cape Town, South Africa. This work consists of two sections. The first is a case series of HIV positive children who presented to a neuropsychiatric clinic at a children's hospital. The cases describe the neuropsychiatric presentations as well as the life challenges experienced by this group of institutionalized children. The second section details the results of a comprehensive literature review of studies which explored the neurocognitive and psychiatric impact of HIV in children on CART. The concluding chapter reflects the particular clinical service and educational challenges experienced by this patient population.
