It's been called a "new paradigm" and "the medicine of the future." At the same time, it is so profoundly changing our understanding of health and healing, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has poured $190 million into it. What's the brouhaha about? The emerging new science of epigenetics, which reveals the foods you eat switch genes on or off that can lead either to wellness or illness. But this "medicine of the future" does even more, for it provides a crystal ball not only into your potential health, but also that of your children, even unborn generations. Be assured: the age of nutritional epigenetics has arrived. Pottenger's Prophecy: How Food Resets Genes for Wellness or Illness reveals the foods that launch your genes on a path toward illness, as well as the diet that can activate "health" genes-often instantly-that promote a longer, healthier life. Regardless of your current health status, Pottenger's Prophecy is the source for anyone who wants to eat to reset genes-NOW-for health, healing, and longevity. Read it and discover the food and nutrition secrets you and your offspring need to live up to your epigenetic health potential...for life. More than 425 references.

Although mental illness has not been eradicated, the move to equate mental illness with a physical legitimate illness has resulted in greater understanding on many aspects as to the particular course of the disease. In spite of the difficulties that remain, mental health treatment has come a long way.Faith in the Field provides a historic, sociological, theological, and research-based perspective on the treatment and study on mental health. It points out the challenges within the field and confronts the political, socioeconomic, theological, scientific, and cultural adversities facing advances in mental health treatment. It also attempts to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and those who suffer from it. Combining approaches from psychiatry, psychology, sociology, theology, and nursing, this study aims for a middle ground upon which to build a levee that might ameliorate existing barriers to treatment. Author Sabas Hernan Flores Whittaker, building on his thirty-year career in health care, offers a unique outlook on this timely topic. This multidisciplinary study considers numerous aspects of mental health treatment from various perspectives, seeking a unified approach that could benefit all.

We live in worrisome times. Perhaps chief among these worries is a concern about health. Newly discovered diseases, ranging from Legionnaires' disease and Lyme disease all the way to AIDS, are reported regularly in the press. At the same time, expensive new technological devices, such as the CAT scan or the PET scan, are trumpeted urgently as ways of diagnosing and warding off otherwise hidden but possibly fatal conditions. New medical treatments, and alternative medical treatments, are advertised on television. It is no wonder that people focus on their health. And in the face of a prolonged or obscure illness, everyone becomes a health worrier. Nevertheless, some people worry all the time. Experiencing any kind of physical symptom, they imagine the worst possible illness. And they tend to express emotional distress by developing physical symptoms. These men and women are suffering from health anxiety.Their fears are unrealistic, but not entirely irrational. They are an outgrowth of certain common childhood experiences. Taken together, they reflect a set of mistaken ideas:about the nature of physical illness. about diet and sleep and bodily functions. about doctors and the way they think. about drugs and their side-effects. about physical examinations and laboratory tests. and about dying and death itself.Health anxiety is a distressing and debilitating condition and untreated continues on for years, worsening again every time the affected person becomes slightly ill.An ...

Family violence and sexual abuse are significant issues for people with mental illness. Abuse impacts on mental health and is a contributing if not causal factor in the development of mental illness. Mental health services in Australia are governed by federal and state mental health policies since the early 1990s. This study examined policy guidance by government for mental health services in Victoria in relation to intpersonal trauma experienced by mental health clients. A policy analyis and comparative study between two Australian states showed clear difference in policy direction. The study concludes with recommendations for the state of Victoria (study site) and the need to provide policy on the issue for mental health services. Targetted policy would provide strategies to work within a trauma-informed framework and promote the concept that working within such a framework constitutes core business for mental health services. There is a clear need to provide mental heatlh services that take a sensitive and proactive approach to trauma issues for people with mental illness.

A survey study exploring the attributions of dangerousness and avoidance from people with severe mental illness was carried out. The study employed opportunity sampling and sixty students (m=30; f=30) half of which were students of Psychology and the other half were students of MBA. The students' familiarity with severe mental illness, the perception of dangerousness and the desire to avoid from persons with severe mental illness were gathered via a self-administered electronic survey. More females than males showed a heightened level of fear and avoidance from persons with severe mental illness. However, students with a psychology background showed more desire for social inclusion and lower perception of dangerousness than the MBA. Similarly, students with the high level of familiarity showed less fear and more tolerance towards persons with severe mental illness than students with low level of familiarity, which supported the earlier findings.

Wings of Gauze is a multidisciplinary anthology of original essays written about the experiences of women of color in the United States - African American, Hispanic American, Native American, and Southeast Asian American. Written by social science and humanities scholars, community activists, and health professionals, the essays illustrate a variety of approaches from a range of academic disciplines, theoretical models, and individual perspectives. Testimony to the many layers of experience by women of color concerning health and illnesses, the essays broaden our understanding of the connections that exist between those experiences and the health issues and cultural standpoints that frame them. With some notable exceptions, recent feminist scholarship about women’s health and the history of health care has focused primarily on the experiences of white middle-class women. Literature by health professional about people of color has focused upon illness and perceived deviance from white-defined norms rather than upon the political economy of health and alternative concepts of well-being. It also has focused on men rather than women, and on African Americans to the exclusion of other peoples of color. This collection – the first of its kind – is a shift away from this standard paradigm and instead makes women of color and their perceptions the central reality. The book includes creative writing, participant-observer perspectives, personal narratives, survey studies, and studies ba...

In this dramatic new approach to understanding personal health, Dr. Pelletier shows how lifelong good health is far more dependent on a positive, purposeful life orientation than on aerobic workouts and rigid low-fat diets. He challenges the medical community's long-accepted focus on the "disease model" and proposes a positive new health paradigm.Sound Mind, Sound Body examines the lives of people who are rarely ill, who manage aging successfully, or who cope extremely well with both acute and chronic illness -- and describes how they do it. Among Dr. Pelletier's fascinating findings: -- People who overcome serious illness or physical trauma in childhood are often actually strengthened -- not debilitated -- by the experience.-- People who enjoy a sense of belonging and a real connection with others generally pass through periods of intense stress and remain untouched by illness.-- Altruistic work is closely related to the ability to overcome life-threatening crises and disease.-- There is a healthy way of being ill, which can help a person manage such chronic problems as arthritis and heart disease. In addition, Sound Mind, Sound Body offers practical, effective techniques to help anyone achieve physical, mental, and emotional equilibrium and enjoy a lifetime of optimal health.

By the mid-twentieth century, public health concerns in Europe had shifted away from infectious diseases toward nonepidemic afflictions and problems. At the same time, European polities began investing in health care and biomedical research like never before. In the environment of the Cold War, improvement in the health of the population became one of several standards by which the successes and failures of liberal, fascist, and communist welfare states were measured. This volume, arising out of a conference held in Barcelona in 1998, explores European images of and policies toward health and illness after 1945. The essays focus on four major areas in postwar health policy: tuberculosis, cancer, addiction, and natalist health care. One of the strengths of this volume is the willingness of its authors to discuss cultural representations of health and illness alongside developments in policy. Ilana Löwy, for instance, explores the ways in which new cancer therapies were portrayed as cellular soldiers and researchers as innovative [End Page 483] and heroic saviors. Essays by Dagmar Ellerbrock and Barbara Markiewicz show how German, American, and Polish initiatives to combat tuberculosis were transformed into metaphors for contemporary political struggles. The contributions of Nikolai Krementsov and Lyubov Gurjeva provide us with suggestive insights into the possibilities for writing cultural histories of Soviet medicine. Of interest, too, is the volume's attention to the postwar...

This book explains how they work and why, for many kinds of health problems, it is a better healing approach than conventional Western medicine.

In humans, it is the general condition of a person's mind, body and spirit, usually meaning to be free from illness, injury or pain (as in "good health" or "healthy").The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in 1946 as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Healthcare is delivered by practitioners in medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, and other care providers.Rural India contains over 68 percent of India's total population with half of it living below poverty line, struggling for better and easy access to health care and services. Mental Illness in Popular Media. Essays on the Representation of Disorders

Whether in movies, cartoons, commercials, or even fast food marketing, psychology and mental illness remain pervasive in popular culture. In this collection of new essays, scholars from a range of fields explore representations of mental illness and disabilities across various media of popular culture. Contributors address how forms of psychiatric disorder have been addressed in film, on stage, and in literature, how popular culture genres are utilized to communicate often confusing and conflicted relationships with the mentally ill, and how popular cultures around the world reflect mental illness and disability. Analyses of sources as disparate as the Batman films, Broadway musicals and Nigerian home movies reveal how definitions of mental illness, mental health, and of psychology itself intersect with discourses on race, gender, law, capitalism, and globalization. This book examines the impact of chronic illness on the experiences of motherhood. The data for this examination derives from qualitative interviews with mothers with multiple sclerosis (MS). The interview questions for the qualitative research study focused on issues pertaining to the impact MS has had on chronically-ill women's perceptions of mothering, identity, the body, and the medical establishment. This research contributes to scholarship on feminist analysis of mothering, identity, and health care. This work argues that despite facing barriers to empowerment met in essentialized views of motherhood, a social lack of knowledge about chronic illness, and hierarchical health-care models, mothers with multiple sclerosis empower themselves to care for their bodies, the needs of their families, and to incorporate the changes MS introduces to their lives in meaningful ways.

Knowing patient illness and pain level when arriving at a hospital is a key factor for life saving. Modern hospitals do not treat patients based on arrival time, rather on illness level. That is because saving a patient's life is a matter of time, therefore leaving patients wait for treatment without knowing and identifying their illness level may result in life threatening especially for patients who experience critical health conditions. Design for Six-Sigma is an effective way of creating a process that is focused on customer needs. In this book different performance measures have been employed to evaluate the hospital's Emergency Department performance before and after the triage process such as length of stay and waiting time.
