Oral health holds the key to general health in many aspects. However, it is one component about which there is very little awareness and little clear understanding of the implications. In view of the adverse effects of poor oral health, it is important to take preventive measures and create the required services. To achieve this purpose a baseline data is necessary to be created so that such data will help us plan and formulate programmes and implement them to improve oral health of the community. Indian sub continent having 970 million population with substantial proportion of children, should concentrate to improve the dental health of the future generation in younger age, with the help of the most resourceful health-man power, the school teachers in turn helping them to maintain their own. Thus the present study undertaken.

Healthy lifestyles are the first step toward the prevention of disease and premature death. The major causes of death in the United States today are chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and stroke. The purpose of this book was to compare the health profile results of Seventh-day Adventist College students with the health profile results of State University students. The findings concluded that the Seventh-day Adventist scored significantly healthier in Wellness Now Scores, smoking score and alcohol consumption. These findings support the ideology that healthy lifestyles and health status are closely linked and that prevention is the best health care practice. Professionals in all health fields could utilize these results to support the ideology of health promotion and prevention as the best defense against premature morbidity and mortality. Constant evaluation of the long- term and short-term consequences of poor, as well as positive, health behaviors choices should be a driving force for all levels of health promotion policy makers.

The importance of the health sector to global development cannot be gainsaid. Both the Millenium Development Goals (MDG's) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) have health as a critical component for achievement of global development. Utilization of Maternal health care service is an important health issue related to both maternal and child survival as it reduces maternal mortality and morbidity as well as improving the wellbeing of mothers and their children before, during and after birth. Considering low utilization of maternal health care service especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, understanding what determines utilization becomes important. This book tries to expound on the determinants of maternal healthcare services utilization especially in a resource poor setting and provides recommendations on possible measures to be taken to scale up utilization of maternal healthcare services with an aim of reducing maternal mortality and morbidity.

India is committed to Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and is a signatory of Convention for Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), yet at the start of the 11th Five- Year Plan, women’s health and well-being have received far less attention and care both from civil society including their families and from the public sphere. The book found that the prevalence of morbidity, especially obstetric and gynecological morbidity was quite high among women of reproductive age group in rural West Bengal and also in rural Birbhum. Also, the prevalence of non-reproductive morbidity among women of the said age group, though not very high, cannot be ignored. The tendency to seek treatment for any morbidity was not satisfactory. Therefore this book tried to identify the socio-economic and demographic factors, which determine women's health status and their treatment seeking behaviour.

The World Health Organization approved National Center for Health Statistics (NCSH) standards of measuring malnutrition is used to compare the nutritional status of the rural children. Three types of malnutrition is measured they are, Weight for Age (Underweight), Height for Age (Stunting) and Height for Weight (Wasting). Collected data are analyzed using 'Epi info' soft ware recommended from Food and Nutritional Department of University of Dhaka. It is found, a higher probability of child's malnutrition in rural area than that of general nutritional status of children in all over the nation. Parent's educational status and economic condition or family income is found highly correlated with children's nutritional status. Mother's knowledge of child rearing and health awareness is also positively impacted on children's malnutrition. It is recommended to increase awareness of parents and ensure equal opportunity to rural people for a better nourished nation.

The Rapid City Indian School was one of twenty-eight off-reservation boarding schools built and operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to prepare American Indian children for assimilation into white society. From 1898 to 1933 the "School of the Hills" housed Northern Plains Indian children--including Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Shoshone, Arapaho, Crow, and Flathead--from elementary through middle grades.Scott Riney uses letters, archival materials, and oral histories to provide a candid view of daily life at the school as seen by students, parents, and school employees. The Rapid City Indian School, 1898-1933 offers a new perspective on the complexities of American Indian interactions with a BIA boarding school. It shows how parents and students made the best of their limited educational choices--using the school to pursue their own educational goals--and how the school linked urban Indians to both the services and the controls of reservation life.Scott Riney, who received a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University, lives in Littleton, Colorado.

Asthma morbidity and mortality are on the rise. The increase of asthma in the pediatric setting is startling. Asthma is noted to have a higher prevalence in minority and low- income individuals compared with their more advantaged peers. With this increase in asthma morbidity and mortality in Hispanic children the health care profession is left with the task of identifying exacerbating factors. Research studies have lacked in identifying social factors which may contribute to this startling trend. This study identified numerous barriers, both intrinsic and extrinsic to the health care system which are found to contribute to this rise in asthma rates in Hispanic children. By identifying the extent of individual barrier influences, facilitators can be identified to improve overall asthma outcomes in this high risk population. This is a must read for the health care professional.

Reservation boarding schools represented an important component in the U.S. government's campaign in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to "civilize" American Indians according to Anglo-American standards. The history of the Rainy Mountain School in southwestern Oklahoma reveals much about the form and function of the Indian policy and its consequences for the Kiowa children who attended the school. In To Change Them Forever, Clyde Ellis surveys changes in government policy and tells how the Kiowa people resisted and accommodated the efforts of school personnel to transform them. Ellis combines archival research with personal memoirs, conversations with former students, and the school's official records to portray a school often at odds with official policy and frequently neglected by the Indian Service's bureaucracy.

The present work utilizes the Refractive Error Study in Children (RESC) protocol to determine the prevalence of refractive error among school children in the Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana. It is hoped that this modest attempt will be useful for planning school eye health in the country.

There are dramatic differences in health between countries and within countries. But this is not a simple matter of rich and poor. A poor man in Glasgow is rich compared to the average Indian, but the Glaswegian's life expectancy is 8 years shorter than the Indian's. The Indian is dying of infectious disease linked to his poverty; the Glaswegian of violent death, suicide, heart disease linked to a rich country's version of disadvantage. In all countries, people at relative social disadvantage suffer health disadvantage, dramatically so. Within countries, the higher the social status of individuals the better is their health. These health inequalities defy usual explanations. Conventional approaches to improving health have emphasised access to technical solutions - improved medical care, sanitation, and control of disease vectors; or behaviours - smoking, drinking - obesity, linked to diabetes, heart disease and cancer. These approaches only go so far. Creating the conditions for people to lead flourishing lives, and thus empowering individuals and communities, is key to reduction of health inequalities. In addition to the scale of material success, your position in the social hierarchy also directly affects your health, the higher you are on the social scale, the longer you will live and the better your health will be. And as people change rank, so their health risk changes. What makes these health inequalities unjust is that evidence from round the world shows we know what to do to make them smaller. This new evidence is compelling. It has the potential to change radically the way we think about health, and indeed society.

However, research about this issue among children is scarce. Based on the associations of such a research found in common for all Turkish and Finnish children, this book underlies that oral health is turning out to be part of the global health culture, regardless of cultural differences and different oral health care systems. The book, further, by most recent literature, provides a review of 'Significance of Oral Health, Concept of Oral and General Health Promotion, Health Behavior Theories and Children'.This book provides further evidence that children's general and oral health are interrelated by common lifestyle and family factors, and both should be supported by holistic health promotion strategies and empowerment of families to adopt healthy lifestyles, both in economically developing and developed countries. This book should be especially useful to researchers, professionals in dentistry and medicine, policy makers, and anyone else involved in provision of better health to community.

Mental health is an integral component of health that helps a person to realize his or her own relational abilities using the psychomotor, affective and cognitive domains. A high prevalence of mental disorders is seen in old age and predominant among these is depression. The community-based mental health studies have revealed that the point prevalence of depressive disorders among the geriatric population in India varies between 13 and 25 per cent. Another common mental health problem of the elderly is dementia. The total prevalence of dementia rises sharply above age 75. Individuals with dementia have reduced survival. The prevalence of cognitive impairment has been estimated between 11% (cognitive impairment- no dementia: ages 65-74) and 98% (memory impairment on at least one objective test). The financial burden including medications, care giving and institutional care; increases with the severity. This book explores the mental health status of the elderly Indian population. It also evaluates the National Mental Health Programme in India and identifies the scope of improvement in the mental health care delivery systems for the elderly.

Most child advocates agree that fatherlessness goes beyond the boundaries of race and socio-economic status--and is the root of almost every social ill faced by children in our society. Children from fatherless homes are more likely to live in poverty, become involved in drugs, alcohol abuse, and crime, drop out of school, and suffer from health and emotional problems. Without any real, lasting intervention, this cycle continues and expands from generation to generation--unless an individual does what it takes to stop it. Marvin Charles is living proof that this is possible. Combining heart-wrenching realities with vital information that graphically portrays the problem of fatherlessness in our society, Becoming DADS lays out practical strategies for restoring absentee fathers to their families and helping them develop the skills they need to be engaged, effective dads.

The art and science of practicing of medicine has evolved itself to its present state, which aims at "protecting from disease and promoting positive health". Health care professionals are most negligent as far as their own health is concerned. It is time now for providers of 'Health care service' to look at their own health. Also known as 'hidden hunger', micronutrient deficiencies are a significant cause of malnutrition and associated ill health among populations in developing countries. Even at subclinical levels, it can cause poor general health and decreased school and work performance with an increased mortality risk. There exists a considerable gap in the diets of the community in terms of micronutrient intake, one of the reasons behind this being inadequate knowledge of nutrition. This book provides an insight on the nutritional status of the population residing in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu, India along with the prevalence of clinical and sub clinical levels of deficiency among different age groups. The book further explores the interlinked association of nutritional status with the diet intake and biochemical indicators of micronutrient deficiency. Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Guidebooks - Nutrition, Food, Drinking, , language: English, abstract: The research questions were: What are the major illnesses the community suffers from? How is the nutritional status of that community? Is there any relation between nutritional statuses with present illness? The study is conducted keeping in mind the following objectives: to assess the nutritional status of the adult people in the selected area; to determine the dietary pattern of the respondents; to co-relate the clinical conditions with their dietary pattern; and to formulate alternative ways for the good health of adults aged 50-70 years.Malnutrition is common among people aged above 50 years in India. The prevalence of malnutrition among the elderly was found to be 11.6% and the percentage at risk of malnutrition was 46%. Keeping in mind the fact that people from other part of Kamrup district were already suffering from malnutrition and hence even in Dispur zone, Kamrup district, there was every possibility of people suffering malnutrition but no such data or study were published or discussed so far for this age group of people. Therefore, in order to make elderly people aware about their biological status, in terms of nutrition and to improve their quality of life there was a need of such research considering their nutritional status and its deleterious effect on their health and wellbeing.

This study addresses the question how income affects health care utilization by the population aged 50 and over in the United States and a number of European countries with varying health care systems. The probabilities that individuals receive several medical services (visits to general practitioner, specialist, dentist, inpatient, or outpatient services) are analyzed separately using probit models. In addition to controls for income and demographic characteristics, controls for health status (both subjective and objective measures of health) are used. We analyze how the relationship between income and health care utilization varies across countries and relate these cross country differences to characteristics of the health care system, i. e., per capita total and public expenditure on health care, gate-keeping for specialist care, and copayments.

Public Health Law Research: Theory and Methods definitively explores the mechanisms, theories and models central to public health law research – a growing field dedicated to measuring and studying law as a central means for advancing public health. Editors Alexander C. Wagenaar and Scott Burris outline integrated theory drawn from numerous disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences; specific mechanisms of legal effect and guidelines for collecting and coding empirical datasets of statutory and case law; optimal research designs for randomized trials and natural experiments for public health law evaluation; and methods for qualitative and cost-benefit studies of law.. They also discuss the challenge of effectively translating the results of scientific evaluations into public health laws and highlight the impact of this growing field. “How exactly the law can best be used as a tool for protecting and enhancing the public’s health has long been the subject of solely opinion and anecdote. Enter Public Health Law Research, a discipline designed to bring the bright light of science to the relationships between law and health. This book is a giant step forward in illuminating that subject.” – Stephen Teret, JD, MPH, Professor, Director, Center for Law and the Public's Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health “Wagenaar and Burris bring a dose of much needed rigor to the empirical study of which public health law interventions really matter, and which don’t.” – Bernard S.
