Pakistan, Of Pakistan Government of Pakistan Hamoodur Rahman Commission of Inquiry Into the 1971 India-Pakistan War, Supplementary Report

The Hamoodur Rahman Commission was officially reconstituted in 1974 to interview returning prisoners, particularly senior officers, and issue a supplementary report to their original landmark document. The supplementary report makes fascinating reading, based on the Commissions in-depth interviews with these senior officials and officers who were directly responsible for the conduct of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. This supplementary report is also easier to read than the original document, being less technical and much shorter. However, it still manages to paint a vivid picture of the circumstances that led to the surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. The report, just like the original, is also extremely candid in discussing the culpability and responsibility of senior officers in the events that led up to Pakistan's humiliating surrender.

Even though Pakistan has taken a zero-tolerance approach to ISIS, recent polling data suggests that support for ISIS within Pakistan hovers around 8%, while 62 per cent of Pakistani?s said they ?don?t know?; (representing over 120 million people) such a large percentage of ?don?t knows? indicating a lack of familiarity with the issue; underlining the importance of religious education in Pakistan, as the line between Islam and violent extremism seems to be blurred in the country. Hence this book focuses on improving human rights-, ethical- and Islamic education in Pakistan; also in view that Pakistan's blasphemy laws carry a potential death sentence for anyone who insults Islam ? Salman Taseer governor of Punjab, and Shahbaz Bhatti, minorities minister, both assassinated by extremists in 2011 for asking for the law to be reformed. Furthermore there is also a discussion of the laws of conservation of building heritage of Europe with that of Pakistan, a research is conducted to find the weaknesses in the present laws in Pakistan and suggestions are made for the amendment in preservation Polices. The architectural heritage conservation is in an unhealthy and deteriorating state in Pakistan. It is attributed mainly due to the ineffective laws and inefficient professionalism. Much of the improvement can be made by comparing the set of relevant Pakistani as well as European laws. There is a need for the modern professionals to conduct a very specific, climatically, culturally, and area specific research. The objective should be to propose such amendments that could help update firstly the present regulations, and secondly the existing conditions.

Dr. Nitin Prasad Contemporary Pakistan. Political System, Military and Changing Scenario

Pakistan has exercised different forms of Political systems like Presidential, Parliamentary, Federation and One Unit. Local Bodies system has also been influenced by these experiences. It has been facing Political, non-political, dictators and bureaucratic influence. Pakistan has poor facts of democracy. It has been ruled by the military, while the Military governments always generated mistakes with the politicians. Pakistan's capacity to protract the low cost conflict in Kashmir is beyond any doubt. Although the likely spillover effects of this on Pakistan's polity are obvious, they will be, to a great degree, manageable. The Islamist organisations, in spite of their opposition to elements of the state and its armed forces, are in favour of maintaining the unity of the country that is, for them, "the fortress of Islam" and "the only Islamic nuclear power". And though the US wants to tame the Pakistan army, and especially ISI its intelligence agency, it knows it will not benefit from the disintegration of the country. Nevertheless the pressures that imperialism and neoliberalism are putting on the country are creating a complex mesh of ethnic and nationalist tensions that could lead to a spiralling war. Only by fighting for a unified working class response to the pressures of globalisation and war can we hope to be able to offer an alternative.

Shabbir Ghulam Macroeconomic Management. Monetary and Fiscal Policy of Pakistan

This book has empirically investigated the impacts of Pakistan's demand management policies on foreign sector. The transmission mechanism between monetary policy and aggregate demand has been analyzed by using the monetary approach, which depicts that disequilibrium in the balance of payments is the result of domestic money market imbalance. Pakistan is the 27th largest economy of the world in terms of purchasing power parity. During 1970s and 1990s, economic performance of Pakistan remained poor due to nationalization of various sectors and macroeconomic mismanagement. Pakistan's economy became one of the four fastest growing economies in the South Asia during 2000-2007, which was the result of effective strategies of the monetary authorities. Presently, the economy is suffering due to poor law and order situation and nation's involvement in the War on Terrorism. The findings of the study are: government budget deficit has significant impact on money supply and increase in money supply has deteriorated the balance of payments proportionally during the period of 1965-99. These empirical findings have equal importance for academicians as well as economic managers of the country.

Pakistan constitutes a valuable case study for investigating the dynamics of persistently high rates of deficits. The budget and trade deficits occurred concurrently with acute macro economic imbalances and indebtedness, which is a major cause of concern. In Pakistan, little is known with authenticity, about the channels through which changes in these deficits percolate the macroeconomic system. Most of the studies conducted outside Pakistan, assert, some support for the maintained proposition that budget deficit, in so for lead to increase in money supply do cause inflation affects interest rates and trade deficit. But identification of the model, measurement and estimation, forecasting ability, applications of impulsive response functions and variance decompositions along with causality tests are still the matter of investigation. This book filled the gap by establishing the linkages of deficits with the macroeconomic variables of Pakistan economy in vector Autoregressive Model. The book therefore, provides extensive applications of VARMA and cointegration techniques. The book is highly recommendable for economists and graduate students.

'An urgent and extraordinary book. Weaving a philosophical analysis of Heidegger, Agamben and Foucault, Jan draws out the implications of their thought for a radical analysis of the ontological politics of Islam and Pakistan. Whether writing about the 'Ulama and Deoband schools, blasphemy laws, the military, beards, or the Bamiyan Buddhas, Jan provokes and challenges our thinking while unearthing the ground on which Pakistan—and our world—are built.' —Joel Wainwright, Department of Geography, Ohio State University, USA 'In this exceptionally inventive and important book, Jan shows us that the problems besetting political life in Pakistan are part of a more troubling crisis in modern forms of power. Challenging accounts that cordon off «political Islam» from «the West,» Jan discloses their fundamental indistinction and thus, through his practice of critical ontology, reorients our understanding of how power and violence are at work in the world.' —Joshua Barkan, Department of Geography, University of Georgia, USA The Metacolonial State presents a novel rethinking of the relationship between Islam and the Political. Key to the text is an original argument regarding the «biopoliticization of Islam» and the imperative need for understanding sovereign power and the state of exception in resolutely ontological terms. Through the formulation of a critical ontology of political violence, The Metacolonial State endeavors to shed new light on the signatures of power undergirding postcolonial life, while situating Pakistan as a paradigmatic site for reflection on the nature of modernity's precarious present. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is one of the main cash crops of Pakistan. It has played a significant role in industrial development and employment generation. It is known as backbone of Pakistan‟s economy. Its impact on the economic development of the country is well established and it is rightly known as silver fiber of Pakistan. It occupies the 2nd position with respect to cultivated area in the country. During 2007-08 the cotton production was 12 million bales from an area of 3.05 million ha (Anonymous, 2008). Chemical fertilizers which have nutrients available, can provide sufficient nutrients to the crops, but their cost and constrains frequently deter farmers from using them in recommended quantities and balanced proportions. Moreover, limited availability of chemical fertilizers and their high cost are making their use difficult for the farmers. No doubt, use of chemical fertilizer provides essential nutrients for crop improvement to obtain higher yields; however, data of recent years reflect that the crop yields in Pakistan are almost stagnant. This situation warrants the use of organic sources of nutrients.

It is very difficult to understand how people around the world believe things about Pakistan that are untrue without actually ever knowing how things really are. The perceptions that are embedded in the minds are so strong that it is almost impossible to clear them out. The conviction with which the false image is accepted is even more appalling. This book highlights one of the most essential industries of the world i.e. media and shows how media alone has been a crucial part of Pakistan's existence and progress. It is an effort to show how Pakistani media started and how much has it evolved over the years. The media is a representation of a society and one must know at least a bit about Pakistan's media before creating perceptions that do not fit our society as a whole. Therefore, this book is about understanding how things really are in Pakistan through media giving an unbiased overview of the situation. Thus, this work should prove quite useful to students and professionals in the field of Media, Communications and Journalism around the world as a mere eye opener.

"Success has many parents but failure is an orphan". It is well to bear in mind as we look at India Pakistan relations since 1947. The India-Pakistan conflict is considered to be one of the most intractable conflicts in the world. The history of Indo-Pak relations has been mainly a story of conflict and discord, mutual distrust and suspicion. The relations between the two countries have shifted from conflict to de-escalation to conflict and again to de-escalation but very seldom to cooperation. On occasions some silver lines of cooperation appears and then it is quickly covered by thick clouds of mistrust. The study will look into some of the instances where Track Two Diplomacy has resulted in conflict resolution between India and Pakistan, and how it has made a significant contribution in pushing forward the peace processes and has developed new ideas for "sustainable security."

With an average annual rainfall of less than 240 mm, Pakistan is one of the most arid countries in the world. Every year, during the monsoon season from July to September, Pakistan experiences heavy rainfalls. However, this year the substantial amount of unexpected monsoon rainfall resulted in heavy floods as a consequence of the absence of adequate infrastructure (dams, barrages, reservoirs). The heavy rainfall started in the last week of July 2010, and continued for days in the regions of Balochistan, followed closely by a second spell in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). The rain continued until the first few days of August 2010, causing tremendous damage to both property and lives. The heavy rainfall flooded the already flooded rivers and streams, causing the river banks to burst. The flood water started causing destruction in KPK, and continued its journey towards Punjab and Sindh. The floods in Pakistan have had an impact on all the sectors of the economy. Handling these problems would require a model that could simultaneously capture the major relations among different sectors of the economy, and thereby, trace through the indirect and secondary effects on the economy. The model used to calculate the impact is subjected to a number of simulations that are run on E-views. In this study, the author uses a model that reports clearly what Pakistan will face in terms of production loss and recovery. The results are assessed on the basis of past data and the current situation in the c...

There nonetheless are significant and controversial debates over the nature of Islam’s expansion in South Asia - whether Hindu communities were forced into conversion, whether it was a peaceful process of intermarriage, whether it was the desire for freedom from the Hindu caste system, or the influence of Sufi missionaries. This book highlights the development of Islam and poses many questions about the correct interpretation of the Islamic Religion.

Qaiser Julius Ahmadi and Christian Socio-Political Responses to Pakistan.s Blasphemy Laws. A Comparison, Contrast and Critique with Special Reference to the Christian Church in Pakistan

The roots of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws can be traced back to the British colonial rule in India, but their harsher clauses were added to the Pakistan Penal Code during a wave of intense Islamization in the 1980s. Everyone in Pakistan is threatened by the misuse of these laws, even Muslims; however a disproportionate number of victims targeted by these laws have come from two minority groups, the Ahmadis and Christians.Dr Qaiser Julius focuses on how these two groups have been affected by Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, their different reactions to these laws, and more specifically, why they are responding differently despite living under the same circumstances. In this well-structured and understandable study, Julius provides a valuable tool for Christians to understand what it means to be a minority in a hostile culture. This thorough analysis presents a way forward for the Christian church in Pakistan, providing hope amidst the discrimination and persecution.

The cross-disciplinary approach of Dr. Jan's work is certain to have broad appeal among geographers, historians, anthropologists, postcolonial theorists, and political scientists, among others. At the same time, his explication of critical ontology – with its radical reading of the interlacement of history, power and the event – promises to add a bold new dimension to social science research on Islamism and biopolitics.
