Allison Waling McCulloch Technology as Teddy Bear or Tool.

Graphing calculators are a mainstay in the U.S. high school mathematics curriculum and because of that considerable research has been done on their effect in the mathematics classroom. While much of this work has focused on the impact of graphing calculator use on achievement and attitude, little has been done to address how students use the graphing calculator when they are working in independent situations or their perceptions of how the graphing calculator impacts their mathematical experience. As such, the work in this book provides a new lens through which to view graphing calculator use, the lens of the student. Six case studies of high school calculus students, their words and their actions, provide insight into the reasons why and the ways with which these students incorporate graphing calculator use in their independent mathematics activity. The results of the study will be of interest to both mathematics teachers and mathematics education researchers who are interested in the role that technology plays in students' mathematical activity.

Karen Tankersley Threads of Reading. Strategies for Literacy Development

How can teachers make sure that all students gain the reading skills they need to be successful in school and in life? In this book, Karen Tankersley describes the six foundational "threads" that students need to study in order to become effective readers: phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and higher-order processing. For each area, the author explains how students acquire the reading skills they need and offers a series of skill-building strategies and activities that teachers can use in the classroom. Although reading is perhaps most intensely taught in the kindergarten and 1st-grade classrooms, Tankersley emphasizes that helping students become lifelong readers is a task for all teachers, including content-area teachers in middle and high schools. The Threads of Reading addresses key questions about literacy, such as*What makes a difference in reading achievement?*How much reading time is enough?*How can teachers use writing to build reading skills?*How can teachers help students make meaning from their reading? The strategies in this book address many situations, from individual instruction to small- or large-group instruction, from kindergarten to high school. Teachers will appreciate the multitude of activities provided, and administrators will learn to better evaluate the reading programs in place in their districts and schools. Grounded in both research and "teacher lore" from actual classrooms, this book is a s...

Sergei Abramovich Topics in Mathematics for Elementary Teachers. A Technology-Enhanced Experiential Approach (PB)

This book reflects the author's experience in teaching a mathematics content course for pre-service elementaryteachers. The book addresses a number of recommendations of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciencesfor the preparation of teachers demonstrating how abstract mathematical concepts can be motivated byconcrete activities. Such an approach, when enhanced by the use of technology, makes it easier for the teachersto grasp the meaning of generalization, formal proof, and the creation of an increasing number of concepts onhigher levels of abstraction. A strong experiential component of the book made possible by the use of manipulativematerials and digital technology such as spreadsheets, The Geometer's Sketchpad, Graphing Calculator 3.5(produced by Pacific Tech), and Kid Pix Studio Deluxe makes it possible to balance informal and formalapproaches to mathematics, allowing the teachers to learn how the two approaches complement each other.Classroom observations of the teachers' learning mathematics as a combination of theory and experiment confirmthat this approach elevates one's mathematical understanding to a higher ground. The book not only showsthe importance of mathematics content knowledge for teachers but better still, how this knowledge can be graduallydeveloped in the context of exploring grade-appropriate activities and tasks and using computational andmanipulative environments to support these explorations. Most of the chapters are motivated...

Songorwa Mary The Impact of School Inspection on Schools. Management in Tanzania

The book investigated the impact of school inspection activities on Secondary Schools Management in Moshi Municipality, as perceived by educators. The book used a cross-sectional survey design. Three hundred thirty- three respondents in 22 schools were included. The data gathered were coded, treated and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Spearman's rho correlation, and content analysis. The alpha level selected for determination of statistical significance and hypothesis testing was set at 0.05. Findings revealed that most of the respondents agreed that school inspectors' recommendations improved Schools management. Teachers in private schools hold better perception on school inspection activities than public school teachers. Male teachers hold the same perceptions as female teachers regarding inspection activities on schools. Older teachers tend to have better perceptions of inspection activities on school discipline and school development than younger teachers. Qualified teachers tend to have lower perceptions of inspection activities on school governance, and experienced teachers tend to have lower perceptions of inspection activities on school documents.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, grade: 2:1, University of Derby, course: Bachelors (hons) Psychology, language: English, abstract: This qualitative interpretive phenomenological study uses semi-structured interviews from 5 Jamaican teachers to investigate their experiences of control in the classroom. Since 2005 the Ministry of Education in Jamaica prohibited the use of corporal punishment (CP) in early childhood settings but there is research to show that children are still receiving physical punishment and teachers have been reported to still be using CP in schools.Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis across all 5 participants revealed a strong influence of cultural norms that encourages the use of CP, a lack of support from the Jamaican Teachers Association and the Ministry of Education, ineffective teacher training courses and lack of support from the community causing these teachers to still rely on CP, for want of a better solutions. In light of these findings, this study hopes to provide insight for education policy makers to provide effective classroom management modules at Teacher Training College, introduction of school intervention programmes, parenting programmes and to better support its teachers to eliminate the use of CP across Jamaica, not just in schools alone.

Bo Hannaford Teacher Perceptions of a Professional Learning Community

Many studies provide evidence that professional learning communities are a valid means for school reform in public education. These studies may be even more important since schools are facing more pressure than ever to meet high academic performance benchmarks. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to discover teacher perceptions toward a professional learning community and teacher perceptions of instructional practice in a middle school in a southern U.S. state. The results of this study indicated that teachers have a positive perception of learning communities, instructional practice, effective communication, collaboration, shared leadership practices, and the use of common assessments. Teachers, principals, and superintendents may use the results of this study to promote the creation of professional learning communities. The results of this study can lead to positive social change by providing an alternative school culture encouraging a positive perception among teachers that leads to improved instructional practice which can impact student learning

Most previous evaluations have studied theimpact of field-test versions of a curriculum. Since these innovative curricula were so new at the time ofmany of these studies, students and teachers were relative novices in their use. These earlier studies weremainly one year or less in duration. Students in the comparison groups were typically from schools in whichsome classes used a Standards-based curriculum and other classes used a conventional curriculum, rather than using the Standards-based curriculumwith all students as curriculum developers intended. This volume reports one of the first studies of the efficacy of Standards-based mathematics curricula with all of the following characteristics:· The study focused on fairly stable implementations of a first-edition Standards-based high school mathematics curriculum thatwas used by all students in each of three schools.· It involved students who experienced up to seven years of Standards-based mathematics curricula and instruction in middle schooland high school.· It monitored students’ mathematical achievement, beliefs, and attitudes for four years of high school and one year after graduation.Prior to the study, many of the teachers had one or more years of exper...

Morake Abigail Mathapelo The role of school leadership in mediating the IQMS at school level

Integrated Quality Management System is a model used for appraising teachers in South Africa and has been in use post-1994. The study shed light on the historical development that shaped the current model used for appraising teachers, especially after 1994. IQMS as a model for appraisal was introduced as a direct response after the collapse of the inspection system which was autocratic and highly subjective. Using a case study approach, two schools in Soweto were purposefully selected because of the strong leadership and data was collected from eleven teachers and two principals. The study aims to investigate the role of the school leadership in mediating IQMS at school level. The study employed interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The research is concerned with the lived experiences of individual teachers in the confines of the environment that they are most comfortable in. This research was taken from the interpretivist position which views the world as constructed by means of multi perspectives. The study argues that the leadership at school level has a prominent role to play in mediating IQMS despite the tensions inherent therein.

Thelma Dhlomo Teacher participation in curriculum implementation decisions

Education systems can be centralised or decentralized. When an education system is centralised, broad policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures are centrally determined. As a result, school based interpretation of the policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures become crucial. Successful curriculum implementation therefore depends to a large extent on the teachers. As the key actors in curriculum implementation, teachers know what works best in the teaching and learning process. This then calls for high teacher participation in school based interpretation of the guiding frameworks. In this book an investigation into teacher involvement in curriculum implementation decisions at primary school level is presented. The findings revealed gaps in teacher involvement and recommendations point towards the need for deliberate full engagement of teachers since they are key implementers of the curriculum.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: 4.8, University of Colombo (UNICA), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to illustrate some of the effects of negative emotional traits in the teaching performance of two English seven and eight grade teachers with forty students each in a public school in Suba, Bogotá. The work focused on three negative emotional traits (frustration, anxiety and lack of creativity) that are the core of a negative class environment. The research of Ferguson, Frost& Hall (2012) explores some of the physical effects such as increased blood pressure, anger, headaches, and some psychological effects such as anxiety, nervousness, tension, frustration and panic, that some teachers might experience when they are exposed to situations of high amount of stress. Furthermore, those effects can affect teacher performance when teaching classes. Two case studies described the situations that affect teachers' performance, how teachers reacted when experiencing those situations and what the outcomes are in the classroom environment. The main situations found during the study are related with students' behavior, students' attitude about class activities, school demands regarding class structure and the amount of English use during classes.

Using a descriptive survey design within a case study, through questionnaires and interviews on a sample of 80 host teachers, 32 lecturers and 75 student teachers, data was collected from the three principal parties in the mentoring scheme in three teachers colleges in the Masvingo province of Zimbabwe. The empirical investigation revealed that the tripartite student teacher mentoring scheme, though with high hopes of yielding fruitful results, was flawed with gaps and challenges, rendering the quality of the student teachers' school based professional training some-what wanting. Promising initiatives, especially to do with more dialogue between lecturers and host teachers on aspects of host teaching,as measures to mitigate the challenges were suggested.

George Madaus, Michael Russell, Jennifer Higgins The Paradoxes of High Stakes Testing. How They Affect Students, Their Parents, Teachers, Principals, Schools, and Society (PB)

The book's goal is to clarify for parents, the public, and policy makers what high stakes testsare and how their use affects our schools, children, and society. It explores the various uses, limitations, and paradoxical consequences of high stakes testing. The present context of testing and the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind make theproposed book timely and important. Current testing programs provide valuable information toteachers, parents, and policy-makers about students, schools, and school systems. Butparadoxically, these programs have unintended yet predictable negative consequences for manystudents, teachers, and schools. It is essential that the public and policy-makers understand the scope and impacts that result from theinherent paradoxical nature of high-stakes testing.Testing is viewed by policy makers across party lines as an "objective" measure of student attainment and has become their toolof choice to drive educational "reform" and hold children, teachers, schools, and districts accountable. Bipartisan support for test-basedaccountability is firm. For example, on January of 2005 President Bush called on Congress to extend NCLB testing in math and scienceto freshmen, sophomores and juniors citing poor performance among high school students as a "warning and a call to action." (NYT 01/13/05) Senator Kennedy, a critic of the President, nonetheless supported the President's proposed high school testing provisions.

It employed the critical paradigm to examine the teachers' motivational levels and job satisfaction as members of the decision-making processes in the case study school. Therefore, this study used five semi-structured interviews on five randomly selected participants who gave the qualitative data analyzed. The coding of the gathered data identified five key themes analyzed in section 4. The findings indicate that the participants unequivocally challenged the hierarchical leadership style witnessed in the country's public schools since they feel that they are oppressive in nature and demean the teachers' opinions leading to teachers' frustration in the teaching profession and poor schools academic performance. Consequently, this study proposes the distributed leadership form to enable teachers to develop a sense of ownership, responsibility, collaboration, and fulfilled life that arises from being part of the decision-making process in their school.
