Recent developments in diverse areas of mathematics suggest the study of a certain class of extensions of C*-algebras. Here, Ronald Douglas uses methods from homological algebra to study this collection of extensions. He first shows that equivalence classes of the extensions of the compact metrizable space X form an abelian group Ext (X). Second, he shows that the correspondence X ⃗ Ext (X) defines a homotopy invariant covariant functor which can then be used to define a generalized homology theory. Establishing the periodicity of order two, the author shows, following Atiyah, that a concrete realization of K-homology is obtained.

This book describes an invariant, l, of oriented rational homology 3-spheres which is a generalization of work of Andrew Casson in the integer homology sphere case. Let R(X) denote the space of conjugacy classes of representations of p(X) into SU(2). Let (W,W,F) be a Heegaard splitting of a rational homology sphere M. Then l(M) is declared to be an appropriately defined intersection number of R(W) and R(W) inside R(F). The definition of this intersection number is a delicate task, as the spaces involved have singularities. A formula describing how l transforms under Dehn surgery is proved. The formula involves Alexander polynomials and Dedekind sums, and can be used to give a rather elementary proof of the existence of l. It is also shown that when M is a Z-homology sphere, l(M) determines the Rochlin invariant of M.

This book presents a new result in 3-dimensional topology. It is well known that any closed oriented 3-manifold can be obtained by surgery on a framed link in S 3. In Global Surgery Formula for the Casson-Walker Invariant, a function F of framed links in S 3 is described, and it is proven that F consistently defines an invariant, lamda (l), of closed oriented 3-manifolds. l is then expressed in terms of previously known invariants of 3-manifolds. For integral homology spheres, l is the invariant introduced by Casson in 1985, which allowed him to solve old and famous questions in 3-dimensional topology. l becomes simpler as the first Betti number increases. As an explicit function of Alexander polynomials and surgery coefficients of framed links, the function F extends in a natural way to framed links in rational homology spheres. It is proven that F describes the variation of l under any surgery starting from a rational homology sphere. Thus F yields a global surgery formula for the Casson invariant.

In the spring of 1985, A. Casson announced an interesting invariant of homology 3-spheres via constructions on representation spaces. This invariant generalizes the Rohlin invariant and gives surprising corollaries in low-dimensional topology. In the fall of that same year, Selman Akbulut and John McCarthy held a seminar on this invariant. These notes grew out of that seminar. The authors have tried to remain close to Casson's original outline and proceed by giving needed details, including an exposition of Newstead's results. In this book Professor Lusztig solves an interesting problem by entirely new methods: specifically, the use of cohomology of buildings and related complexes.The book gives an explicit construction of one distinguished member, D(V), of the discrete series of GLn (Fq), where V is the n-dimensional F-vector space on which GLn(Fq) acts. This is a p-adic representation; more precisely D(V) is a free module of rank (q--1) (q2-1)...(qn-1-1) over the ring of Witt vectors WF of F. In Chapter 1 the author studies the homology of partially ordered sets, and proves some vanishing theorems for the homology of some partially ordered sets associated to geometric structures. Chapter 2 is a study of the representation △ of the affine group over a finite field. In Chapter 3 D(V) is defined, and its restriction to parabolic subgroups is determined. In Chapter 4 the author computes the character of D(V), and shows how to obtain other members of the discrete series by applying Galois automorphisms to D(V). Applications are in Chapter 5. As one of the main applications of his study the author gives a precise analysis of a Brauer lifting of the standard representation of GLn(Fq).

This text is intended as a one semester introduction to algebraic topology at the undergraduate and beginning graduate levels. Basically, it covers simplicial homology theory, the fundamental group, covering spaces, the higher homotopy groups and introductory singular homology theory. The text follows a broad historical outline and uses the proofs of the discoverers of the important theorems when this is consistent with the elementary level of the course. This method of presentation is intended to reduce the abstract nature of algebraic topology to a level that is palatable for the beginning student and to provide motivation and cohesion that are often lacking in abstact treatments. The text emphasizes the geometric approach to algebraic topology and attempts to show the importance of topological concepts by applying them to problems of geometry and analysis. The original goal that ultimately led to this volume was the construction of "motivic cohomology theory," whose existence was conjectured by A. Beilinson and S. Lichtenbaum. This is achieved in the book's fourth paper, using results of the other papers whose additional role is to contribute to our understanding of various properties of algebraic cycles. The material presented provides the foundations for the recent proof of the celebrated "Milnor Conjecture" by Vladimir Voevodsky. The theory of sheaves of relative cycles is developed in the first paper of this volume. The theory of presheaves with transfers and more specifically homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers is the main theme of the second paper. The Friedlander-Lawson moving lemma for families of algebraic cycles appears in the third paper in which a bivariant theory called bivariant cycle cohomology is constructed. The recent introduction of the Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds has revolutionized the study of those manifolds. The invariants are gauge-theoretic in nature and are close cousins of the much-studied SU(2)-invariants defined over fifteen years ago by Donaldson. On a practical level, the new invariants have proved to be more powerful and have led to a vast generalization of earlier results. This book is an introduction to the Seiberg-Witten invariants. The work begins with a review of the classical material on Spin c structures and their associated Dirac operators. Next comes a discussion of the Seiberg-Witten equations, which is set in the context of nonlinear elliptic operators on an appropriate infinite dimensional space of configurations. It is demonstrated that the space of solutions to these equations, called the Seiberg-Witten moduli space, is finite dimensional, and its dimension is then computed. In contrast to the SU(2)-case, the Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces are shown to be compact. The Seiberg-Witten invariant is then essentially the homology class in the space of configurations represented by the Seiberg-Witten moduli space. The last chapter gives a flavor for the applications of these new invariants by computing the invariants for most Kahler surfaces and then deriving some basic toological consequences for these surfaces.

The present book work tried to classify various types of neurons in the telencephalon of strawberry finch, Estrilda amandava. This study shows the various types of neurons, their morphological characteristics (Soma diameter, spine density, dendritic field, axonal length) and projections in the several fields of forebrain and deduced homology of various regions with reptilian and mammalian cerebral cortex. The findings show that the medial arm of the V-shaped layer of hippocampus corresponds to Ammon’s horn and the parahippocampus to the subiculum of mammals. The hippocampal complex of birds is comparable to the reptilian dorsomedial cortex. The corticoid complex of birds is homologous with reptilian lateral cortex and mammalian entorhinal cortex. The visual wulst of birds is homologous with reptilian dorsal cortex and mammalian visual cortex. The present study of neuronal classes of several regions has given important base for the further studies as Estrilda amandava seems to be a suitable avian model for studying the experimental tracing, immunocytochemistry, electrophysiology, lesion and regeneration experiments to identify the path & complexity of neuronal regeneration.

Toric varieties are algebraic varieties arising from elementary geometric and combinatorial objects such as convex polytopes in Euclidean space with vertices on lattice points. Since many algebraic geometry notions such as singularities, birational maps, cycles, homology, intersection theory, and Riemann-Roch translate into simple facts about polytopes, toric varieties provide a marvelous source of examples in algebraic geometry. In the other direction, general facts from algebraic geometry have implications for such polytopes, such as to the problem of the number of lattice points they contain. In spite of the fact that toric varieties are very special in the spectrum of all algebraic varieties, they provide a remarkably useful testing ground for general theories. The aim of this mini-course is to develop the foundations of the study of toric varieties, with examples, and describe some of these relations and applications. The text concludes with Stanley's theorem characterizing the numbers of simplicies in each dimension in a convex simplicial polytope. Although some general theorems are quoted without proof, the concrete interpretations via simplicial geometry should make the text accessible to beginners in algebraic geometry.

We start with a mathematical review about generalized homology and cohomology theories and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, in order to provide an explicit link between such a spectral sequence and the Gysin map. MDMA is a psychoactive drug which is thought to act via stimulation of secretion as well as inhibition of re-uptake of large amounts of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine in the brain. MDMA also acts directly on a number of receptors, including 5-HT2A receptors. There is considerable evidence that 5-HT2A antagonists can modulate behavioral and physiological effects of MDMA in animals. Nantenine an aporphine alkaloid ex Nandina domestica has been reported to block and reverse a range of behavioral and physiological effects of MDMA in mice. In this book is shown synthesis and design of a library of novel analogs in order to investigate the structural requirements for nantenine’s 5-HT2A activity. To elucidate possible binding modes of these compounds and to determine the correlation with our binding data, we built a 5-HT2A homology model based on a bovine rhodopsin template and then performed docking/scoring experiments. In the second part of the book, nantenine as well as a number of flexible analogs were evaluated for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity in a microplate spectrophotometric assays based on Ellman’s method.

In Sequence Analysis, two sequences are compared to identify similarities and differences between them. Generally, a measure of how similar they are is also desirable. A typical approach to solve this problem is to find a good and reasonable alignment between the two sequences. Then, given an appropriate scoring scheme, their similarity can be computed. This study describes the concepts, tools and selected algorithms being used for sequence analysis and recent works which have been done in the field of Sequence Analysis. Alignment of protein sequences is an elementary step in the analysis of biological data. It has traditionally been applied to analyzing protein families for conserved motifs, phylogeny, structural properties, and to improve sensitivity in homology searching. In this research work, a new method, coined as Global Alignment Tool (GLAT) is developed to improve both the accuracy and speed of sequence alignment. We compared the accuracy of this method to other popular methods.

In order to study AT2-mediated signal transduction mechanisms, two main approaches were used: (1) the ligand-binding properties of mutant AT2 receptors were characterized in comparison to wild-type after generation of a point mutation using site-directed mutagenesis, and (2) interacting protein partners were analyzed using yeast library screening, co-immunoprecipitation and Western Blot studies. We found that the ability of Angiotensin II (Ang II) receptor type AT2 Phe308Ala residue mutant in the 7th TMD to bind peptidic ligands was greatly reduced, using Xenopus oocytes expression system. This residue occupies a position in the AT2 analogous to the Tyr292 in the AT1 essential for agonistic activation of that receptor. Screening of a 17-day mouse embryo cDNA library with the Angiotensin II receptor AT2 as the bait in yeast two-hybrid assay identified sodium-hydrogen exchanger NHE6 as the binding partner with 98% sequence homology. Further studies revealed that when human cell-line MCF-7 was transfected with the AT2, the AT2 co-immunoprecipitated with the NHE6 in the presence of Ang II, implying that Ang II-mediated activation is needed for the interaction between AT2 and NHE6.

A study was undertaken to isolate, identify and characterize the causative agent of Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) in layers from field outbreaks in Namakkal area.The maximum prevalence was noticed in the age group of 10 to 20 weeks (40.47 %) followed by 20 to 30 weeks (26.19 %). The field isolates were confirmed by Agar Gel Precipitation Test and histopathology.Molecular characterization of the field ILTV isolates were carried out by amplification of ICP4 gene and Tk gene by polymerase chain reaction and produced amplicons size of 635 bp and 649 bp respectively.Restriction endonuclease analysis of ILTV field isolates were carried out for the Tk gene amplicons size of 649 bp with endonuclease enzymes viz. HaeIII, Sau 96I and NciI and two for Hae III ,Three for Sau 96I and no cleavage for NciI were observed.The sequence analysis showed that the homology of nucleotide sequences between field isolates was 99.2 - 100 per cent for ICP4 gene and 96.5 -100 per cent for the Tk gene. The protein profile of field ILTV isolates and vaccine strain were studied by SDS - PAGE which yielded 60, 85,160 and 205 kDa. A dot-ELISA technique was developed for detection of ILTV from field samples.

Integrating the study of both music and art into an exploration of the early poetry of Eugenio Montale (1896-1982), this book situates Italy's premier poet of the twentieth century within the Modernist movement. Gian-Paolo Biasin finds in Montale's poetry broad resonances, reverberations, and comparisons that involve it in the European culture of its time and that invite the reading of poetry, music, and painting as texts in a cultural system.
