Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Controlling, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, 90 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The competitive environment for companies is steadily becoming more challenging and demanding. Large planned company take-overs as recently announced from multinational corporations like for instance MITTAL STEEL or E.ON AG indicate the demand for more sophisticated and advanced management accounting information in order to react properly on the external market pressures worldwide. Multinational companies regularly have to cope with different institutional environments, management practices, techniques as well as cultural understandings between the respective countries. While in this context the field of financial accounting has already attracted much attention from the academic world on a comparative nationwide level, the area of internal management accounting has largely been a concern of approaches focussing on single countries only. These approaches have been analysed by national academic scholars and as a consequence also influenced the practices in other countries. However, in order to initiate a discussion and to highlight best practices, novelties and inefficiencies in the management accounting world, a sophisticated comparison drawing on the differences and similarities in the observed countries has only recently been conducted in the management accounting literature.Furthermore, different l...

Is the invention of accounting so useful that, as Charlie Munger once said, "you have to knowaccounting. It's the language of practical business life. It was a very useful thing to deliver tocivilization. I've heard it came to civilization through Venice which of course was once the greatcommercial power in the Mediterranean"? (WOO 2013)This positive view on accounting can be contrasted with an opposing view by Paul Browne that"the recent [accounting] scandals have brought a new level of attention to the accountingprofession as gatekeepers and custodians of social interest." (DUM 2013)Contrary to these opposing views (and other ones as will be discussed in the book), accounting(in relation to addition and subtraction) are neither possible (or impossible) nor desirable (orundesirable) to the extent that the respective ideologues (on different sides) would like us tobelieve.Of course, this reexamination of different opposing views on accounting does not mean that the study of addition and subtraction isuseless, or that those fields (related to accounting)-like bookkeeping, auditing, forensics, info management, finance, philosophy ofaccounting, accounting ethics, lean accounting, mental accounting, environmental audit, creative accounting, carbon accounting, socialaccounting, and so on-are unimportant. (WK 2013) In fact, neither of these extreme views is plausible.Rather, this book offers an alternative (better) way to understand the future of accounting ...

This book explores two combined approaches (strategy and accounting) from a cross-disciplinary perspective in order to improve knowledge of value creation in various contexts. Existing studies on this topic have generally adopted a purely account-based or strategy-oriented approach to address this issue. However, this book draws upon a number of well-defined theoretical and empirical backgrounds and methodologies. Since the 1980s, many changes have occurred and companies have increasingly focused their strategies on value creation. Consequently, new strategic directions have emerged, especially for managerial accounting. Management accounting and alignment with strategy could thus improve performance. This book encourages further thought and reflection on these issues which should be pursued in the future as firms face new challenges associated with the acceleration of digital transformation.

International auditing of publicly owned corporations is governed largely by either U.S. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) auditing standards or International Standards on Auditing (ISA) established by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). In some respects, the U.S. PCAOB and ISA are similar, but in other ways they are not. In International Auditing Standards in the United States, the authors describe key differences between PCAOB auditing standards and ISA. The goal in doing so is to provide students, managers, and researchers with a clear, concise guide to the major differences between PCAOB and ISA standards. Understanding these differences will provide the reader with a greater appreciation of the differences in the auditing process between nations, and a greater understanding of what the audit opinion means as issued in different parts of the world. The world certainly suffers no shortage of accounting texts. The many out there help readers prepare, audit, interpret and explain corporate financial statements. What has been missing is a book offering context and discussion for divisive issues such as taxes, debt, options, and earnings volatility. King addresses the why of accounting instead of the how, providing practitioners and students with a highly readable history of U.S. corporate accounting. More Than a Numbers Game: A Brief History of Accounting was inspired by Arthur Levitt's landmark 1998 speech delivered at New York University. The Securities and Exchange Commission chairman described the too-little challenged custom of earnings management and presaged the breakdown in the US corporate accounting three years later. Somehow, over a one-hundred year period, accounting morphed from a tool used by American railroad managers to communicate with absent British investors into an enabler of corporate fraud. How this happened makes for a good business story. This book is not another description of accounting scandals. Instead it offers a history of ideas. Each chapter covers a controversial topic that emerged over the past century. Historical background and discussion of people involved give relevance to concepts discussed. The author shows how economics, finance, law and business customs contributed to accounting's development. Ideas presented come from a career spent working with accounting information.

As often reported in Business Week and Fortune, most large companies today concede that their cost systems are desperately obsolete. In this eagerly awaited book, John Shank and Vijay Govindarajan, nationally known experts on the strategic use of cost information, address head-on the fundamental concepts of management accounting that are in desperate need of change. The authors demonstrate how strategic cost management, the first analytic framework to relate meaningful accounting information to a firm's business strategy, is revolutionizing accounting-and overall business practices in leading firms. With numerous extended examples including Ciba-Geigy, Ford, Texas Instruments, and many more, the authors show how the three key tools of strategic cost management-value chain analysis, strategic positioning analysis, and cost driver analysis-provide a sustainable competitive advantage over firms whose cost systems are in disarray. With persuasive evidence, Shank and Govindarajan demonstrate the strategic power of value chain analysis, i.e., linking external value creating activities all the way from basic raw materials, to component suppliers, and through to the ultimate end-use product delivered to the consumers. Next, they examine how cost management and cost control must be differentiated depending on the strategic positioning chosen by the firm, be it cost leadership or product differentiation. Finally, the authors offer penetrating in-sights on cost driver analysis using ...

This book introduces capacity management, describes cash flow dynamics, and offers ideas about how to manage both Business leaders rely on accounting data such as profit and calculated costs as a guide to whether they are making money. Should they? Accounting was designed to report financial performance not model cash flow. Accruals can disconnect cash flow from the timing and extent to which it occurs. Statements of cash flow do not provide insight into what was bought and how efficiently it was used. Costs and profits are not absolute, they change based on the model you use to calculate them. To manage cash, you must manage what you buy and how effectively you use it. The largest expenditure for most companies is capacity; space, labor, materials, equipment, and technology. Unless you model and manage capacity effectively, you will not achieve the cash flow results you seek. This book introduces capacity management, describes cash flow dynamics, and offers ideas about how to manage both. After reading it, you be able to see, understand, and manage cash flow as never before.

This book is designed for corporate directors and senior executives who want to gain a better understanding of accounting. Corporate directors and managers are under pressure from recent changes in the law (especially The Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002) and demands by shareholders and the public to be more informed, vigilant and involved in the governance of business organizations. One area in particular, accounting and financial reporting, has been a source of great consternation for directors. Breakdowns in internal control, reporting scandals, restatements and outright accounting fraud have made accounting a source of dread and confusion for corporate directors. We discuss what accounting tries to do, how well it achieves its purpose, and why and how accounting and financial reporting go awry. At the end of each chapter we provide a list of steps that the board should take and questions they should be asking the auditor and management. Directors can use this understanding to move discussions beyond financial reports and identify the impact of accounting matters on broader organizational issues.
