Dewa Mavhinga Land Reform and Human Rights in Post Colonial States

This study examines a subject that evokes the strongest emotions and has potential at once to trigger the most egregious violations of human rights as well as to promote and further the cause of human rights in a big way - land reform in post-colonial States. In post-colonial States (mainly in Africa, Asia and Latin America) land is central to past and current conflicts as well as conflict-resolution strategies. For post-colonial States achievement of national independence has often been associated with the removal of institutional hangovers from the past, which may include land reform. This study establishes that land reform does not inherently have an adverse impact on human rights and that it is possible to carry out land reform programs in a human rights respecting way. For sustainable land reform programmes to take place a pro-human rights way, the critical challenge is not a development of new frameworks within the human rights system, but simply to validate existing human rights principles.

Olateju Olatunji Which governance and whose governance in Africa.

The book did a critical examination of the pre-colonial African political structures. This is done with a view to reject the toga of 'bad governance' associated with post-colonial African states as self-imposed injury. In doing this, efforts are geared towards showing Africa as having diverse political systems that cannot be reconstructed with a single best-practice governance template. These efforts are underlined by a conviction that pre-colonial African societies were though non-liberal but capable of sustaining political systems with inclusive governance as against elite-centred liberal system that characterises the post-colonial states

Hugh Boscawen The Capture of Louisbourg, 1758

Volume 27 in the Campaigns and Commanders Series. A comprehensive account of the pivotal battle of the Seven Years' War Louisbourg, France's impressive fortress on Cape Breton Island's foggy Atlantic coast, dominated access to the St. Lawrence and colonial New France for forty years in the mid-eighteenth century. In 1755, Great Britain and France stumbled into the French and Indian War, part of what (to Europe) became the Seven Years' War-only for British forces to suffer successive defeats. In 1758, Britain and France, as well as Indian nations caught in the rivalry, fought for high stakes: the future of colonial America. Hugh Boscawen describes how Britain's war minister William Pitt launched four fleets in a coordinated campaign to prevent France from reinforcing Louisbourg. As the author shows, the Royal Navy outfought its opponents before General Jeffery Amherst and Brigadier James Wolfe successfully led 14,000 British regulars, including American-born redcoats, rangers, and carpenters, in a hard-fought assault landing. Together they besieged the fortress, which surrendered after forty-nine days. The victory marked a turning point in British fortunes and precipitated the end of French rule in North America. Boscawen, an experienced soldier and sailor, and a direct descendant of Admiral the Hon. Edward Boscawen, who commanded the Royal Navy fleet at Louisbourg, examines the pivotal 1758 Louisbourg campaign from both the British and French perspectives....

‘A magical, exuberant tragic-comic vision of post-colonial Malaysia reminiscent of Rushdie and Roy. In prose of acrobatic grace, Samarasan conjures a vibrant portrait, by turns intimate and sweeping, of characters and a country coming of age. The debut of a significant, and thrilling new talent.’ Peter Ho DaviesSet in Malaysia, this spellbinding, exuberant first novel introduces us to a prosperous Indian immigrant family, as it slowly peels away its closely guarded secrets. When the family's servant girl, Chellam, is dismissed from the big house for unnamed crimes, it is only the latest in a series of losses that have shaken six-year-old Aasha's life. Her grandmother has passed away under mysterious circumstances and her older sister has disappeared for a new life abroad, with no plans to return. Her parents, meanwhile, seem to be hiding something away – from themselves, and from one another. As the novel tells us the story of the years leading up to these events, we learn what has happened to the hopes and dreams of a family caught up in Malaysia's troubled post-colonial history. What bought the Rajasekharan family to the Big House in Malaysia? What was Chellam's unforgivable crime? Why did the eldest daughter leave the country under strained circumstances? What is Appa – the respectable family patriarch – hiding from his wife and his children?Through this vibrant cast of characters, and through a masterful evocation of the clashes and strains in a country where Malays, Indians and Chinese inhabitants vie for their positions in society, Preeta Samarasan brings us an enthralling saga of one household and the world beyond it.

Les Veuves creoles, comedie

Les Veuves créoles is the first play known to have been composed in Martinique. This three-act prose comedy was published anonymously in Paris in 1768 and was performed at least twice in the capital of Caribbean theatre, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) during the colonial period. Set in colonial Martinique in the port town of Saint-Pierre, Les Veuves créoles represents an early example of créole francophone drama. Three créole widows are courted by the grasping and dishonest Fatincourt who, after six years on the island, is keen to marry in order to repay his debts and return to France. The two older widows run successful businesses – a fact that, for Fatincourt, renders them eligible despite their advanced years. The third widow is younger but is portrayed as foolish for believing herself superior to other créoles thanks to a short visit she has made to France. The older widows eventually unite in order to thwart Fatincourt, and it is metropolitan France that emerges as the principal source of wrong-doing in this lively play. Contemporary reviewers in the Parisian press were uncertain how to respond to the play’s créole slant, but acknowledged its comic and theatrical merits. It is hoped that both elements will be of interest today.

Kwame A. Ninsin The Corrupt Elites. Anatomy of power and wealth in Ghana

The Corrupt Elites is a simple and straight-forward narrative in which explains the incidence of corruption or the rise of corruption within successive historical conjunctures in the Ghana. Some of the questions raised and answered in the study relate to how the Ghanaian precolonial, colonial and post-colonial states and their mutually interrelated political processes affected the production and distribution of wealth. In particular, how political decisions and interests of the political elites influenced the location of economic activities and the distribution of the costs and benefits of these activities. An explanation is given as to why corruption has festered in the Ghanaian polity and recrudesced from the 1990s with such devastating social, economic and political effect. The purpose of this essay is to substantiate the assumptions underpinning the narrative with concrete historical evidence.

Anthropology At The Dawn Of The Cold War. The Influence Of Foundations, Mccarthyism And The CIA

This book breaks new ground in the history of anthropology, opening up an explicit examination of anthropology in the Cold War era. With historical distance, Cold War anthropology has begun to emerge as a distinct field within the discipline. This book brings a number of different approaches to bear on the questions raised by anthropology's Cold War history. The contributors show how anthropologists became both tools and victims of the Cold War state during the rise of the United States in the post-War period. Examining the intersection between science and power, this book is a compelling read for anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and anyone interested in the way in which colonial and neo-colonial knowledge is produced and constructed.

Immigration is an important social change which requires special attention because of its direct impact on socio-cultural and family contexts. As their parents, immigrant children experience profound life changes due to separation from significant others and more broadly defined social networks. The present book provides data on psychosocial outcomes of immigrant children in Italy, where similarly to other European countries, the percentage of immigrant groups is in constant increase. Psychological and social adjustment domains in three ethnic groups were investigated, as well as the unique contribution of ethnic background on children's family drawings. The findings indicate that immigrant children present more adjustment difficulties than their native peers and that family composition developed in the context of parent-child relationships in terms of proximity, similarity and value between self and parental figures relate to drawing outcome in specific ways for Albanian, Serbian and Italian groups.

Andrew Newman Allegories of Encounter. Colonial Literacy and Indian Captivities

Presenting an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to colonial America's best-known literary genre, Andrew Newman analyzes depictions of reading, writing, and recollecting texts in Indian captivity narratives. While histories of literacy and colonialism have emphasized the experiences of Native Americans, as students in missionary schools or as parties to treacherous treaties, captivity narratives reveal what literacy meant to colonists among Indians. Colonial captives treasured the written word in order to distinguish themselves from their Native captors and to affiliate with their distant cultural communities. Their narratives suggest that Indians recognized this value, sometimes with benevolence: repeatedly, they presented colonists with books. In this way and others, Scriptures, saintly lives, and even Shakespeare were introduced into diverse experiences of colonial captivity. What other scholars have understood more simply as textual parallels, Newman argues instead may reflect lived allegories, the identification of one's own unfolding story with the stories of others. In an authoritative, wide-ranging study that encompasses the foundational New England narratives, accounts of martyrdom and cultural conversion in New France and Mohawk country in the 1600s, and narratives set in Cherokee territory and the Great Lakes region during the late eighteenth century, Newman opens up old tales to fresh, thought-provoking interpretations.

Gilbert Michlin Of No Interest to the Nation. A Jewish Family in France, 1925-1945: A Memoir

Gilbert Michlin’s sober text thoroughly documents the story of a Jewish immigrant family in France during the war years. Known as the country of enlightenment and human rights, France drew many Jews from Eastern Europe in the early twentieth century, including Michlin’s parents, who fled the harsh conditions of Poland in the mid-1920s. Michlin’s memoir evokes the golden years of his family’s life in prewar Paris, where he was born, but also reflects on the difficulties of being Jewish in France. His father learned this when French authorities rejected his request for naturalization on the symbolic pretext that he was "of no interest to the nation." The rise of Nazi Germany, the German occupation of France, and the advent of the Vichy government and its anti-Jewish laws would soon follow, and in 1944 the Michlin family would be deported to Auschwitz.

Robert De France SHATTERING THE MYTH OF PROSPERO AND CHALLENGING COLONIAL ASSUMPTIONS

In spite of the abundance of academic essays on Caribbean author George Lamming as well as Sandra Paquet's book that discusses Lamming's novels, this text provides the first in-depth analysis of Water with Berries. It explores the purpose of Lamming's novel, which is to re-tell William Shakespeare's The Tempest in order to challenge the play's portrayal of Caliban. De France's monograph offers new insights into Caliban and illuminates George Lamming's main themes, exile and paradox. The rhetorical resonance of Caliban creates a particular view of colonized peoples, which Lamming reconstructs and challenges in Water with Berries and in The Pleasures of Exile. In The Tempest, readers witness Prospero's affront against an ill-fated insurrection by the helpless and out-numbered Caliban and others; however, Lamming retells the story of Caliban's rebellion within the light of hope for freedom and reluctance to submission. De France explores how Lamming's division of Caliban into three characters challenges and expands colonial assumptions.

Osaghae Esosa Mythic Reconstruction - The Study of Australian Aboriginal and South African Literature

This work examines the reconstruction of cultural and historical myths by selected postcolonial writers of fiction from Indigenous Australia and South Africa. It explores summarily how these myths were used to define the colonial space, define the indigenes and how they in turn have chosen to define and represent themselves in a post-colonial world. This work also brings the postcolonialism debate back to the table by exploring its implications in using the theory to examine indigenous works of literature. The prodominant concerns of this work are Representation and Historiography situated within the context of postcolonialism. The achievement of this work is one of the canonical expansions recommended by postcolonial criticism which stresses the need for and the appreciation of differences that exist in postcolnial fictions even when they seek to achieve the same goals.

Trude G. Dahl Religion and politics

Hindu nationalism became a powerful societal force in India during the 1990s. The political success of Hindu nationalism seemed to signal the importance of religion to Indian politics. As Hindu nationalism grew in popularity and strength it also became the object of scholarly interest. In the post-colonial era there has been a strong impetus to revise established knowledge of Indian religion and society. This book attempts to show how the revisionist tendencies of the post-colonial era were reflected in Western scholarship on Hindu nationalism in the 1990s. One scholarly work on Hindu nationalism from the period is being analysed. Viewing that work in light of broader scholarly discourses of the late 20th century, this book addresses topics like orientalism, essentialism, social constructionism, and modernity. The book brings about a discussion of scholarly trends prevalent in the late 20th century and the implications of these trends for the study of religion. The book should be of interest to scholars, students, and others who are engaged in studies of contemporary India or in studies of religion.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject History - Africa, Ahmadu Bello University, course: HISTORY, language: English, abstract: One of the neglected themes of the history of Katsina emirate, was the contribution of the Christian Missionaries to the socio-economic development of the emirate. This is true because early attempts by Christian missionaries to introduce Christianity into Katsina emirate were not accorded serious attention. Likewise in the colonial period, when the Missionaries succeeded in establishing their stations in various parts of the emirate their activities were almost overlooked by researchers and writers. This paper appreciates the nature and the significance of the Christian Missionary activities in Katsina emirate in the pre-colonial and colonial periods.

Fawzia Afzal-Khan Cultural Imperialism and the Indo-English Novel. Genre and Ideology in R. K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, and Salman Rushdie

"Fawzia Afzal-Khan's excellent book could stand as a reply to those hostile critics who today attack 'multiculturalism' for reductively politicizing literature. In her trenchant discussion, Afzal-Khan shows just how complex the politics of 'liberation' can be for colonial and postcolonial novelists." -Gerald Graff, University of Chicago"Afzal-Khan's study is a major new contribution to the related fields of Indian writing in English and post-colonial literatures. Focused primarily on four Indian novelists, its arguments and conclusions are of vital importance to our understanding of the many new literatures from the former British colonies. Through her judicious use of the theoretical constructs of Frantz Fanon, Fredric Jameson, Edward Said, and others, Afzal-Khan has produced a fresh and compelling interpretation of the Indian-English novel."-Amritjit Singh, Rhode Island CollegeCultural Imperialism and the Indo-English Novel focuses on the novels of R. K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, and Salman Rushdie and explores the tension in these novels between ideology and the generic fictive strategies that shape ideology or are shaped by it. Fawzia Afzal-Khan raises the important question of how much the usage of certain ideological strategies actually helps the ex-colonized writer deal effectively with post-colonial and post-independence trauma and whether or not the choice of a particular genre or mode employed by a writer presup...

N. Michelle Murray Home Away from Home. Immigrant Narratives, Domesticity, and Coloniality in Contemporary Spanish Culture

Home Away from Home: Immigrant Narratives, Domesticity, and Coloniality in Contemporary Spanish Culture examines ideological, emotional, economic, and cultural phenomena brought about by migration through readings of works of literature and film featuring domestic workers. In the past thirty years, Spain has experienced a massive increase in immigration. Since the 1990s, immigrants have been increasingly female, as bilateral trade agreements, migration quotas, and immigration policies between Spain and its former colonies (including the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, and the Philippines) have created jobs for foreign women in the domestic service sector. These migrations reveal that colonial histories continue to be structuring elements of Spanish national culture, even in a democratic era in which its former colonies are now independent. Migration has also transformed the demographic composition of Spain and has created complex new social relations around the axes of gender, race, and nationality. Representations of migrant domestic workers provide critical responses to immigration and its feminization, alongside profound engagements with how the Spanish nation has changed since the end of the Franco era in 1975. Throughout Home Away from Home, readings of works of literature and film show that texts concerning the transnational nature of domestic work uniquely provide a nuanced account of the cultural shifts occurring in late twentieth- through twenty-first...

Biko Agozino Counter-Colonial Criminology. A Critique Of Imperialist Reason

This book is about how the history of colonialism has shaped the definition of crime and justice systems not only in former colonies but also in colonialist countries. Biko Agozino argues that criminology in the West was originally tested in the colonies and then brought back to mother countries - in this way, he claims, the colonial experience has been instrumental in shaping modern criminology in colonial powers. He looks at how radical critiques of mainstream criminology by critical feminist and postmodernist thinkers contribute to an understanding of the relationship between colonial experience and criminology. But he also shows that even critical feminist and postmodernist assessments of conventional criminology do not go far enough as they remain virtually silent on colonial issues. Biko Agozino considers African and other postcolonial literature and contributions to counter colonial criminology, their originality, relevance and limitations. Finally he advocates a 'committed objectivity' approach to race-class-gender criminology investigations in order to come to terms with imperialistic and neo-colonialist criminology.

Findley Penn-Hughes A Fool.s Paradise. Ethnicity, Military and Prospects for Democratisation in Myanmar

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, grade: 68, Durham University (School of Government & International Affairs), course: Politics, language: English, abstract: State and military power have been formally fused in Myanmar since the military coup of 1962. Colonial and pre-colonial experiences prior to this had ensured the creation of a national narrative that emphasised unity and the survival of the regime above all else. This led to the slow infiltration of military rule in the years following independence in 1948 and ultimately to the decades of authoritarian rule and economic mismanagement, exacerbated by economic sanctions. As the rest of the region began its post-colonial transition towards democracy and prosperity, brutal military crackdowns and reprisals following populist uprisings in 1988 and 2007 seemed only to confirm Myanmar's resilience. Following the suppression of the 2007 uprising, it appeared that the hold of the military junta was absolute. The announcement in 2008 by the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) of wide-ranging reforms as part of the 'roadmap to democracy' thus represented the greatest hope of democratic reform for half a century. Following the enactment of constitutional reforms and trumpeted elections in 2010, the state now represents an ostensibly democratic, constitutional system. Throughout early 2011 the newly formed 'civilian' government ...

Multicultural Families, Home Literacies, and Mainstream Schooling (PB)

A volume in Literacy, Language, and LearningSeries Editor Patricia Ruggiano Schmidt, Le Moyne CollegeLack of knowledge about immigrant and minority students' learning outside school has contributedto the difficulties educators encounter when trying to embrace cultural diversity. Many educators do not havethe knowledge base about immigrant and minority children's culturally-specific ways of learning in nonschoolsettings. Given the changing cultural landscapes in today's schools, we have an imperative to developmore situated understandings of immigrant and minority children's literacy learning experiences embedded inthe social and cultural fabrics of their everyday lives outside school. This volume of research meets thisimportant need in the field. It not only focuses on the complexity of literacy learning in diverse home contexts, but also examines how literacy is practiced and lived in multiple ways within families of various backgroundsincluding those of Asian, African and African-American, Hispanic, White European and mixed heritages. Inaddition, it explores how these various culturally embedded home practices will inform school education andpolicy making in a larger socio-political context. The book makes an original and significant contribution tothe fields of literacy education and school, home, and community partnerships.Since immigrant and minority families' literacy activities and the cultural contexts of their practices at home are not readily acce...

Warrior Women. Remaking Post-Secondary Places Through Relational Narrative Inquiry

"Warrior Women" makes visible the ongoing intergenerational narrative reverberations (Young, 2003; 2005) shaped through Canada's residential school era which denied the communal and cultural, economic, educational, human, familial, linguistic, and spiritual rights of Aboriginal people. Attending to these narrative reverberations foregrounded the continuing colonial barriers faced by six Aboriginal post secondary students as they composed their lives in a current era of increasing standardization in Canadian universities and schools. Yet, what also became visible were ways in which the Aboriginal teachers increasingly reclaimed or drew upon their ancestral ways of knowing and being.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject History - Africa, , course: HISTORY, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTThroughout colonial period the history of Nigeria had been influenced by European activities and their impact on the area. One important institution that played a very vital role in the colonial activities was the Christian missionary group. Although at the initial stage their importance was not given required attention because of some obvious political reasons, later, their services were recognized and used by the colonial government to address the social challenges prevalent in the society such as leprosy scourge. This paper discusses the attempts made by the Christian missionary in the effort to convert the menace of one of the dangerous diseases in Nigeria during the colonial period. This was achieved by allowing the mission groups to enter some areas that were hitherto restricted. On the other hand, the mission used that opportunity to achieve the main aim of their coming to northern Nigeria. Finally, the paper concludes the discourse by appreciating the genuine efforts of the mission via-a-vis colonial political maneuvers.

Reinventing Free Labor. Padrone and Immigrant Workers in the North American West, 1880-1930

One of the most infamous villains in North America during the Progressive Era was the padrone, a mafia-like immigrant boss who allegedly enslaved his compatriots and kept them uncivilized, unmanly, and unfree. In this first-ever history of the padrone, Gunther Peck argues that they were not primitive men but rather thoroughly modern entrepreneurs who used corporations, the labor contract, and the right to quit to create far-flung coercive networks. Drawing on Greek, Spanish, and Italian language sources, Peck analyzes how immigrant workers emancipated themselves using the tools of padrone power to their own advantage.

Vivian Nun Halloran The Immigrant Kitchen. Food, Ethnicity, and Diaspora

In The Immigrant Kitchen: Food, Ethnicity, and Diaspora, Vivian Nun Halloran examines food memoirs by immigrants and their descendants and reveals how their treatment of food deeply embeds concerns about immigrant identity in the United States. Halloran argues that by offering a glimpse into the authors' domestic lives through discussions of homemade food, these memoirs demystify the processes of immigration, assimilation, acculturation, and expatriation-ultimately examining what it means to live as naturalized citizens of the United States. Having grown up hearing about their parents' often fraught experiences of immigration, these authors examine the emotional toll these stories took and how such stories continue to affect their view of themselves as Americans. Halloran covers a wide swathe of immigrant food memoirs, moving seamlessly between works by authors such as Austin Clarke, Madhur Jaffrey, Kim Sunée, Diana Abu-Jaber, Eduardo Machado, Colette Rossant, Maya Angelou, and Jonathan Safran Foer. The Immigrant Kitchen describes how these memoirs function as a complex and engaging mass media genre that caters to multiple reading constituencies. Specifically, they entertain readers with personal anecdotes and recollections, teach new culinary skills through recipes, share insight into different cultural mores through ethnographic and reportorial discussions of life in other countries, and attest to the impact that an individual's legal immigration into the United...

What are the origins of slavery and race-based prejudice in the mainland American colonies? How did the Atlantic slave trade operate to supply African labor to colonial America? How did African-American culture form and evolve? How did the American Revolution affect men and women of African descent? Previous editions of this work depicted African-Americans in the American mainland colonies as their contemporaries saw them: as persons from one of the four continents who interacted economically, socially, and politically in a vast, complex Atlantic world. It showed how the society that resulted in colonial America reflected the mix of Atlantic cultures and that a group of these people eventually used European ideas to support creation of a favorable situation for those largely of European descent, omitting Africans, who constituted their primary labor force. In this fourth edition of African Americans in the Colonial Era: From African Origins through the American Revolution, acclaimed scholar Donald R. Wright offers new interpretations to provide a clear understanding of the Atlantic slave trade and the nature of the early African-American experience. This revised edition incorporates the latest data, a fresh Atlantic perspective, and an updated bibliographical essay to thoroughly explore African-Americans’ African origins, their experience crossing the Atlantic, and their existence in colonial America in a broadened, more nuanced way.

Wang Kuo-Chiang Second-Generation Chinese Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Vienna

This work aims at supplementing existing discussions of immigrant business whose homogenization tendency contributes to negligence of differences among immigrant entrepreneurs of the same ethnicity. By studying the second-generation Chinese restaurateurs in Vienna, the author shows that there is a great divergence among businesses of immigrants who belong to different generations, which reflects not only the owners' structural positions but also their varied identities. Through the theoretical lens of boundary-work, business strategies deployed by the second-generation Chinese restaurateurs are interpreted as ways of maintaining and negotiating boundaries between themselves and the first-generation Chinese. This work maps out three kinds of boundary-work: cultural, professional, and moral, and claims that the actors' disposition to any one of them might be explained by the actors' social position, career experience, or the structure of their businesses.
