Correlates associated with benefit finding at study entry included intrinsic religiosity, perceived social support, perceived present control, approach coping, use of emotional support, avoidant coping, and religious coping. Within-persons changes in optimism, perceived social support, perceived present control, approach coping, use of emotional support, avoidant coping, and religious coping were associated with within-persons changes in benefit finding. The association between the trajectories of perceived social support and benefit finding was partially mediated by approach coping and use of emotional support. The findings suggest that coping responses may represent an important mechanism through which changes in benefit finding occur.

The impact of employee fairness perceptions on organizational outcomes have been explored by a wide range of research over the last 30 years. Previous studies found relationships between organizational justice and job satisfaction, organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviors, and productivity. However, there has been minimal research exploring the relationship of employee commitment to supervisor with organizational justice. This book explores the relationship between commitment to supervisor, organizational justice, organizational citizenship behavior and intentions to leave. Previous studies show that the relationship an employee has with their supervisor impacts job satisfaction, extra-role behavior, and intentions to leave. This book adds to the literature in identifying commitment to supervisor as a mediating variable in the relationship between organizational justice and the dependent variables. The results have important implications for organizations in that the relationship formed between a leader and their employees can have far reaching implications for organizational effectiveness and ultimately organizational profitability.

This volume of the Research in Organizational Sciences is entitled "Received Wisdom, Kernels of Truth, and Boundary Conditions in Organizational Studies". Received wisdom is knowledge imparted to peopleby others and is based on authority and tenacity as sources of human knowledge. Authority refers to theacceptance of knowledge as truth because of the position and credibility of the knowledge source. Tenacityrefers to the continued presentation of a particular bit of information by a source until this bit ofinformation is accepted as true by receivers. The problem for organizational studies, however, is that thisreceived wisdom often becomes unquestioned assumptions which guide interpretation of the world and decisions made about the world. Receivedwisdom, therefore, may lead to organizational practices which provide little or no benefit to the organization and, potentially, negative organizationaleffects, because this received wisdom is no longer valid. The 14 papers in this volume all, in some way, strive to question received wisdom and presentalternatives which expand our understanding of organizational behavior in some way. The chapters in this volume each strive to present new ways ofunderstanding organizational constructs, and in so doing reveal how received wisdom has often led to confirmation bias in organizational science. Theknowledge that some perceived truths are actually the products of received wisdom and do not stand up to close scrutiny shakes up things ...

This book presents an algorithm that uses a "Bayesian probabilistic apprroach" to compute the perceived interest of objects in images. A set of likelihood functions were measured via a psychophysical experiment in which subjects rated the perceived visual interest of over 1100 objects in 300 images. These results were then used to determine the likelihood of perceived interest given various factors such as location, contrast, color, luminance, edge-strength and blur. These likelihood functions are used as part of a Bayesian formulation in which perceived interest is inferred based on the factors mentioned above. Our results demonstrate that our algorithm can perform well in predicting perceived interest. A block-based approach is also proposed which doesn't need segmentation and is fast- enough to be used in real-time applications.

Public scandals surrounding charitable nonprofit organizations have increased public scrutiny and criticism which resulted in an increased demand for accountability of charities and other nonprofit organizations. Reporting performance is necessary in order to be accountable for the organizations' performance. Performance reporting is more difficult in nonprofit organizations than in for-profit organizations since no profitability information can be communicated. Nonprofits tend to focus on other concepts to define performance; mainly efficiency, effectiveness and social value. The main theory on nonprofit performance is described in the Organizational Effectiveness literature. Impact assessment has been suggested as a way to measure nonprofit organizational performance. This concept is related to the effectiveness concept of goal attainment, but goes one step further and focuses on impact rather than mere outcomes. In this research a first attempt is made to measure the impact of a specific Dutch nonprofit organization, the Netherlands Heart Foundation. The impact is estimated on the costs related to AMI patients in the working population.

This book analyzes the impact of culture on employee justice judgments and reactions toperceptions of fairness and unfairness. I start this book with the following two questions. Why is a book on culture and organizational justice needed? What does such a book add tothe extant literature on organizational justice, especially, after the publication of the landmarkwork of Colquitt and Greenberg (2005), Handbook of Organizational Justice?Although there are no easy answers to these questions, in the following lines, I explain thereasons why a book on culture and justice is not only needed but also timely. There are at least three reasons for which a book on culture and organizational justice is needed. First, a book on culture andorganizational justice is needed because "there are indications that culture exerts very important and wide-ranging effects onjustice behavior including even generally shaping the likelihood that individuals will experience feelings of injustice" (James,1993, p. 22). Second, globalization has led to the interrelatedness of world economies. Thus, most organizations not only operatein several countries, but they also employ people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The resulting challengeis to find new ways of managing a culturally diverse workforce. Third, justice is inherent to any organized social group. As examples of social systems, organizations are arenas of justice concerns because their members compete for limitedresources...

In today's economy, organizational knowledge is a fundamental factor for remaining competitive and managing intellectual capital. Knowledge management aims to improve organizational performance by designing the work environment with necessary tools. Yet, significant amount of knowledge resides within the people in different forms such as experience or abilities. Transferring individual knowledge within members or into organizational repositories is so difficult. Knowledge sharing only occurs under certain circumstances: People share knowledge when they believe it is beneficial for them, when they feel safe and secure, and when they trust. Since knowledge is power, and brings respect to its bearer, knowledge sharing needs suitable environment. In this context, this study investigated intention to knowledge sharing among forensics in the Turkish National Police (TNP) and the factors -such as perceived organizational justice, organizational citizenship behaviors, subjective norms, and attitudes toward knowledge sharing- affecting their intentions. The researcher utilized a model developed from Ajzen and Fishbein's the theory of reasoned action (TRA).

Several higher education institutions have merged their libraries and computing centers/IT units to form a merged information services organization (MISO). It is believed that with the rise of information technology a natural convergence of these units is taking place and integrated organizations will best provide support in these areas. As information technology and libraries represent two of the largest, if not the largest support organizations on most campuses, it is important to understand how well merged units are succeeding. This descriptive, exploratory study is to ascertain the effectiveness of merged information services organizations at liberal arts colleges as perceived by chief information officers and academic deans. The study also examines their perception of how well these organizations have delivered proposed benefits in academic, administrative, institutional and organizational areas.

Although many colleges and universities are engaged in various forms of distance learning, no clear body of evidence illustrates how administrators come to support or discourage planned growth of distance education. The term "distance learning" itself holds different conceptual meaning for administrators, students and faculty depending on their relationship with delivery technology, academic programs, and program support mechanisms. This study explored the conceptual understanding high-level administrative leaders (president, provost, deans, chief information and financial officers) have regarding distance learning within three academic sectors, and the impact this understanding has on program implementation and resource support. The role of organizational culture influencing relationships between support staff, faculty and administrators was also examined as a possible source of program development influence. Findings suggest that good relations between leaders and professional IT support staff enhance productivity and program development.

Companies are developing strategies to realize value based upon the concept of sustainability. Businesses recognize that sustainability can create a strategic advantage, and can become instrumental to their long-term viability. The concept has dramatically expanded the scope of measuring organizational performance into the economic, social, and environmental components that are often referred to collectively as the "triple bottom line." Organizations are discovering that specific products and processes can have profound environmental and social implications besides normal economic benefits. Within this context, organizational decision-makers must contend with numerous stakeholder issues, pressure from environmental agencies, and increased social consciousness that affects workers, consumers, and communities. These factors must be balanced by a reasonable return on investment and long-term organizational success. The interaction between these conflicting pressures and barriers makes it difficult for organizations to adopt sustainability strategies.

The main objectives of this book are to empirically analyze the impact of leader's change-promoting behavior on employee's readiness for change and whether this relationship is mediated by organizational culture in the context of a developing country such as Pakistan. A sample of 205 responses is drawn from managers based in Karachi. With the help of advanced multivariate statistical techniques, the results indicate that leader's change-promoting behavior has a significant positive impact on change readiness and this relationship is partially mediated by organizational culture in Karachi. The findings may be generalized on a larger population in Pakistan. The study supports the theory of one of the six conceptual formations of change readiness which refers it to as an employee's capacity to change. Therefore, managers should clearly advocate the desired change with the help of their own change-prompting behavior as well as establishing a trusting culture in their organization. Both limitations and areas for future research in the context of Pakistan are also discussed.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,0, Copenhagen Business School, language: English, abstract: This thesis is about the perception of "fit" between two partner brands in a co-branding venture. Previous studies have already identified that a perceived fit between partner brands leads to a positive evaluation of the co-branded offering by consumers. Despite the great importance of fit between brands, it has not been investigated yet which factors (e.g. similar price level, target group, product category) lead to a perceived fit between partner brands by consumers. For closing this research gap, a theoretical framework is developed in order to identify potential "fit factors" that have an influence on the perceived fit. Based on the categorization theory and different brand association classifications the following potential fit factors between two brands are identified: price fit, user fit, usage fit, quality fit, brand personality fit, and category fit.To find out if these fit factors have an impact on the perceived overall (global) fit of two partner brands, an empirical study of 9 real co-brands is conducted. 180 students are asked in an online questionnaire to state their perception of the 9 co-brands, regarding the different fit factors.Findings of the empirical study show that similarities in the price level (price fit), users (user fit),...

There is an abundance of unmet mental health needs among children in the United States. Perceived barriers to mental health care have been long theorized to have a direct impact on the mental health service utilization of children. However, much of what is known about the perceived barriers of children has come from parent and caregiver reports. Using secondary data analysis, this hypothesis-driven study sought to understand the relationship between children’s perception of barriers to mental health care and service utilization. There were two unique aspects of this study. First, the data (N=763) was obtained directly from children and second, it involved children across five service systems: mental health, special education, child welfare, juvenile justice, and substance use.
