The North Eastern Region of India is one of the most hazard prone regions in India, with various natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, landslides and cyclonic storms occurring at regular intervals. The Brahmaputra is a major river system of the world characterized by exceedingly high rates of basin erosion causing immense long-term destruction every year. The continuous retirements and unabated erosion causes heavy loss to the valuable homestead and fertile agricultural lands, besides evacuation of thickly populated riverine dwellers. Thus there is need to have a proper understanding of the problems and consequences of bank erosion, the changing social and economic characteristics due to rehabilitation so as to undertake meaningful mitigation measures for the benefit of the displaced people in particular and the society as a whole. The present work basically embodies the detailed geographical treatment of the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of erosion affected people in the Morigaon district of Assam.

There are vast swathes of people in economic migration across the Gulf states today. In total, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar form the largest destination for labour migration in the global South. This book studies the impact of this mass migration, and its effect on citizenship and workers' rights.Transit States considers how the transitory labour power these workers provide creates an extraordinary development boom that impacts neighbouring countries. The majority of the working population is therefore composed of migrant workers with no citizenship rights. The Gulf takes a central place in growing debates around migration and labour in the global economy. Transit States confronts the precarious working conditions of migrants in an accessible, yet in-depth manner.

The major objective of the study was to determine the impact of migration on the Nigeria labour market. In a country where jobs opportunities are lacking, unattractiveness of agricultural sector of the economy, industrialization is yet to take its full course, high level of institutional corruption and human rights abuses, religious and ethic conflicts, high population growth, wide gap of inequality, majority of the population is living below poverty line etc. Both Internal and International migration are necessary as they help in reducing the pressure on the Nigeria labour market, but movement of highly skilled workers in large numbers have resulted in a 'brain drain' in the country. While the remittances help to redistribute resources and alleviate poverty within the regions. Skills and experienced acquired from the receiving areas can be transferred home either in temporally basis or permanently when migrants visit or return home. These put together will enhanced the socio-economic development and reduce its imbalances in the country.

This book illustrates the impact of tsunami disaster on demography of Sri Lanka and thus those who are interested in studying the relationship between natural disasters and demography will find this book very useful. This book also provides a sound scientific base for the population planners to adjust their plans according to the demographic impact of the Tsunami disaster on future population growth. Most importantly, the methodology proposed to compute risk of death associated with disasters can be used to compute the same for other disaster affected areas. Furthermore, the social planners will undoubtedly find this study very useful because it reveals how elderly women become more vulnerable due to a natural disaster in the context of accommodation, livelihood and health aspects of the elderly population.

The World is witnessing a dramatic demographic population growth explosion across all age groups that had it beginning around the early 1800's when the first billion people in population was recorded. Most importantly has been an increasing growth in the older population. Does population aging matter in the Twenty-First Century? Yes, it matters because as research has pointed out the increasing older population globally will have a significant impact on all essential societal systems, the family, pensions and retirement, financial institutions as well as medical, health and social systems. This growth explosion or phenomenon will affect all continents, countries and regions regardless of economic, political and military power. Causative factors for this global growth in population have come about primarily as a result of medical advances/innovations, agricultural development and the industrial revolution, especially the development of railways, seaways and highways. A major emphasis of the book focuses on several very important factors: the growing older population as aforementioned, especially its impact on all of essential societal systems and the subject of Ageism. Ageism becomes extremely important considering that the growing older population, the "Silver Tsunami" represents the new majority. This new majority will no longer be ignored. Gerontologists for years have attempted to call attention to the fact that "...Expectations for old people are based on ...

Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe and has experienced large migratory flows since the fall of communism. Although there is a growing interest on research related to international migration and remittances, there is a gap in the literature of their impact on poverty. The aim of this study is to fill this gap by investigating this impact in the Coastal and Mountain regions of Albania. Different from other studies in the field, it also provides estimations of changes in poverty in the hypothetical case of additional migration and remittances, which is more relevant from a future policy perspective. Given the large disparities in the development and poverty rates of the regions under investigation the main hypothesis is that the impact is positive in both regions, but different between them. The empirical approach estimates counterfactual consumption expenditure with and without remittances, accounting for endogeneity and selection bias using the Heckman sample-selection model. The main findings confirm the crucial role that international migration has played in regional poverty reduction, and highlight the need for region-specific policies for poverty reduction.

Since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the beginning of the war in Donbas, Eastern Europe has been facing a migration crisis. Millions of Ukrainians are internally displaced or have fled the country and now face an uncertain future. At the same time, Western-imposed sanctions and the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union have affected Russia’s migration policies. These largely ignored processes have a potential to change the social landscape of the region for many years to come. The aim of this collection is to shed light on the forgotten migrant crisis at the European Union’s doorstep and make sense of the various migration processes in and out of Ukraine and Russia. The book is divided into two sections. The first section deals with migration processes that have taken place within Ukraine or have involved Ukrainian citizens’ migration out of the country, excluding Russia. The second section discusses Russia’s response to the rapid inflow of migrants from Ukraine, its changing migration policies and their effect on migrants, as well as other processes related to the phenomenon over the course of the Ukraine crisis.ContributorsTania Bulakh, Mikhail Denisenko, Joanna Fomina, Michael Gentile, Kateryna Ivashchenko-Stadnik, Marina A. What happens to a country when its skilled workers emigrate? The first book to examine the complex economic, social, and political effects of emigration on India, Diaspora, Development, and Democracy provides a conceptual framework for understanding the repercussions of international migration on migrants' home countries. Devesh Kapur finds that migration has influenced India far beyond a simplistic "brain drain"--migration's impact greatly depends on who leaves and why. The book offers new methods and empirical evidence for measuring these traits and shows how data about these characteristics link to specific outcomes. For instance, the positive selection of Indian migrants through education has strengthened India's democracy by creating a political space for previously excluded social groups. Because older Indian elites have an exit option, they are less likely to resist the loss of political power at home. Education and training abroad has played an important role in facilitating the flow of expertise to India, integrating the country into the world economy, positively shaping how India is perceived, and changing traditional conceptions of citizenship. The book highlights a paradox--while international migration is a cause and consequence of globalization, its effects on countries of origin depend largely on factors internal to those countries. A rich portrait of the Indian migrant community, Diaspora, Development, and Democracy explores the complex pol...

This volume makes an important and unique contribution to scholarly understandings of migration and diversity through its focus on Asian contexts. Current scholarship and literature on processes of migration and the consequences of diversity is heavily concentrated on Western contexts and their concerns with "multiculturalism", "integration", "rights and responsibilities", "social cohesion", "social inclusion", and "cosmopolitanism". In contrast, there has been relatively little attention given to migration and growing diversity in Asian contexts which are constituted by highly distinct and varied histories, cultures, geographies, and political economies. This book fills this significant gap in the literature on migration studies with a concentrated focus on communities, cities and countries in the Asian region that are experiencing increased levels of population mobility and subsequent diversity. Not only does it offer analyses of the policies and processes of migration, it also addresses the outcomes and implications of migration and diversity - these include a focus on multiculturalism and citizenship in the Asian region, the emerging complex forms of governance in response to increased diversity, discussions of different settlement experiences, and the practices of everyday life and encounters in increasingly diverse locales.

An attempt is also made to rationalize such a phenomenon by confronting the relevant primary as well as secondary data of rural-urban migration with the Harris-Todaro migration model. The socio-economic impact of rural-urban migration on urban development and unemployment is also highlighted in the book so that it can shed light on the problems of such a torrent flow of in-migrants which puts immense pressure on the existing social and economic infra-structure. It is envisaged that such an exercise would help policy makers to develop a clearer understanding of the factors that causes rural-urban migration and also the associated problems it causes. This would enable framing of policies that are more appropriate to the ground realities, which in turn, will enhance the probability of adequately addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by rural-urban migration.

This book aims to deliver significant scientific progress on the problem of the erosion of geomaterials, focusing on the mechanical/physical aspect. The chapters oscillate between a phenomenological outlook that is well grounded in experiments, and an approach that can offer a modeling framework. The basic mechanisms of internal and surface erosion are tackled one-by-one: filtration, suffusion, contact erosion, concentrated leak erosion, sediment and wind transport, bedload transport. These erosion mechanisms comprise both hydraulic structures (dams, dikes) and natural environments (wind, river, coastal). In this book, physicists and mechanicians share with the reader their most recent findings in their field work and study, while at the same time maintaining an accessible format. This compendium provides a well-documented information resource, and above all, a tool for approaching the issue of erosion of geomaterials in an up-to-date fashion for students, researchers and practitioners alike.

STEPTOE, The Victors and the Vanquished on the Trail to Oregon is perhaps the most compelling adventure story of America’s Great Migration. The book deals in a historical context with the visions and ambitions of America’s 11th President, President James Polk. Through war and the threat of war with Briton, France and Russia he claimed for America the vast lands of the west. He did so in disregard of the prior claims of hundreds of native tribes that would rise in revolt over the appropriation of their tribal lands. Steptoe in an adventure, romance setting tells the tale not only of the migration itself, but deals with the great national issues surrounding that migration. The story is told through the trials, adventures and romances of the Anderson and Rawlins families who with their fellow adventures helped settle the west and make America a super power among nations. Through the adventures of these families is also told the story of the loves and the conflicts between the migrants and the native population, a population whose way of life was forever destroyed. The heroes were many and they were both brown and white. This book puts the reader on the trail to Oregon and in the embrace of history.

Global sea levels have risen significantly through the 20th century. These rises will accelerate through the 21st century and beyond because of Climate change and global warming. Due to the sea level rise, the Indian Ocean Islands in general and the Bay of Bengal in particular are experiencing the largest relative increase and flood risk. The number of people who experience sea level rise are also affected by other factors, such as increasing population within the coastal flood plain. Therefore in this book an attempt has been made to highlight the adverse impact of sea level rise on the people of coastal odisha. Since coastal population are already large and growing rapidly in Odisha, this book is an important one to understand various range of climatic effects including an acceleration in sea level rise.

Puerto Rico is often left out of conversations on migration and transnationalism within the Latino context. Sponsored Migration: The State and Puerto Rican Postwar Migration to the United States by Edgardo Meléndez seeks to rectify this oversight, serving as a comprehensive study of the factors affecting Puerto Rican migration to the United States from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Examining the consequences of the perceived problem of Puerto Rican overpopulation as well as the cost of U.S. imperialism on the lives of Puerto Rican workers, Meléndez scrutinizes Puerto Rican migration in the postwar period as a microcosm of the political history of migration throughout Latin America. Sponsored Migration places Puerto Rico's migration policy in its historical context, examining the central role the Puerto Rican government played in encouraging and organizing migration during the postwar period. Meléndez sheds an important new light on the many ways in which the government intervened in the movement of its people: attempting to provide labor to U.S. agriculture, incorporating migrants into places like New York City, seeking to expand the island's air transportation infrastructure, and even promoting migration in the public school system. One of the first scholars to explore this topic in depth, Meléndez illuminates how migration influenced U.S. and Puerto Rican relations from 1898 onward.

The chronic shortage of labour in Kerala and the resultant higher wage rates received the attention among the workers from other states and they began to move to Kerala in search of work. This has opened a new era of replacement migration to Kerala. This led to the state again become an in-migrating state after a break of about 60 years since the 1960s. Though initially the in-migrants in Kerala were from the neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh mostly seasonal and short-duration migration, at a later period the state started getting migrants from far distant states. This book analyzes the working, living and economic conditions of in-migrant workers, the expenditure pattern of in-migrants and also examine the factors that influence the amount of remittances send back to their left behind. The analysis is based on data from a sample of 109 in-migrants workers in the Mannarkkad Panchayat, Palakkad District. While existing studies on in-migration in Kerala provide evidences for short distance migration from nearby states to Kerala, This study observed the long distance migration from far distant states.

There is the growing concern by governments of most developing countries over the implications of migration on the socio - economic development of their people. In Ghana, this concern has been well articulated by civil society organizations, District Assemblies, local and international NGOs as well as governmental agencies. Particular emphasis has been placed on how to deal with the extent to which internal migration impedes rural development through the loss of able-bodied young men and women who could assist in tilling the land to produce food and cash crops for the upkeep and sustenance of the household in particular, and the community as a whole. There have been efforts by the government of Ghana local and international NGOs as well as some civil society organizations to deal with the serious threats that migration poses to the environment and the employment situation in the urban centres. However, most rural communities in Ghana are still under- developed, to some extent, as a result of migration. It is in view of the above that this study was carried out to identify the factors that influence migration and its impact on the status of rural household resources in the district.

River engineering works are aimed at the control of the water and sediment discharges, bank erosion, channel depth, floodplain area and water quality. This control can be achieved by the use of various structures, used alone or in a combined way, such as check dams, reservoirs, levees and floodwalls, locks, bank revetments, channel contraction and other control works. The choice of the most adequate river engineering work is not straightforward and can then be made only after careful hydraulic, economic, social and environmental analyses. The river engineering structures, if not properly designed and built, can cause opposite effects to those expected during the design phase. Infact, structures are often selected and installed without an understanding of the sediment transport processes, thus violating the dimension, pattern and profile of the stable river. This book reports the results of a research work, aimed at the study of the check dam operation, with particular emphasis to the filling process.

Migration being the movement of human beings maintained close relations with mankind from its earliest stage and played a significant role in the development of society. Migration in pursuit of better employment, better wages and better quality of life, there is apparently nothing objectionable. But rural labour migration becomes objectionable only when it culminates in deprivation of migrant workers of the irreducible barest minimum to which every worker is entitled. It also becomes objectionable when exploitative instincts of employers, contractors or subcontractors take over the finer aspects of human character which may be characterized by the denial of dignity, justice, equality and the inalienable human rights of migrant labours. The book analyses the historical trajectory and its political economy of Palamur labour migration in Andhra Pradesh, India. It also examines the reasons for rural distress migration, the circle of contract labour system, the human rights violation of migrant labour in destination (Hyderabad city). Further, it is also focuses on the changing nature of Indian state and its impact on unorganized labour in general and migrant labour in particular.

The book provides an analysis of the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in traditionally patriarchal societies in three Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. The study focuses on the household unit and examines the positions of women with and without migration experience in their families. Research findings suggest that the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in three selected dimensions (socio-cultural, economic and domestic decision making) depends crucially on the personal ability of each individual woman to consider the migration experience in light of the complex interface of socio-economic factors in both home and host countries.

In this era of rapid demographic and social changes in Ghana, it becomes imperative to carry out a study to access how changes in social institutions such as the extended family system as a result of migration is impacting on the quality of life of the ever-growing older population in Ghana. This book therefore focuses on bringing to the fore the impact of rural-urban migration on the quality of life of older people in Ghana using Nsuta-Atonsu as a case study. A combination of Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were used to delve into the following issues: whether or not migrant children continue to support older people in meeting their food, healthcare and housing needs; the informal social support systems available to older people in Ghana; the economic activities engaged in by the aged to support themselves; the existing government policies and programmes for the aged and finally, the factors responsible for rural to urban migration in Ghana.

The literature on migration realities in Europe is usually centered around the role played by the EU on member states' migration policies. In order to offer a comparative cross-country approach, previous research often allows too much to fall through the cracks. Facets of Migration in Contemporary Europe: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Specific Challenges directly addresses this issue. Through its multidisciplinary approach, it includes contributions ranging from policy-oriented chapters dedicated to the role of low-skilled and 'illegal' migrants to the securitization of migration in Europe as well as the role of Diasporas and language policies for the integration of migrants. The central theme of the volume is that experiences of migration in Western European countries can help the emerging countries of immigration in Central and Eastern Europe to improve their migration policies and living conditions.

The movement of sediment and associated pollutants over the landscape and into water bodies is of increasing concern with respect to pollution control, prevention of muddy floods and environmental protection. In addition, the loss of soil on site has implications for declining agricultural productivity, loss of biodiversity and decreased amenity and landscape value. The fate of sediment and the conservation of soil are important issues for land managers and decision-makers. In developing appropriate policies and solutions, managers and researchers are making greater use of erosion models to characterise the processes of erosion and their interaction with the landscape. A study of erosion requires one to think in terms of microseconds to understand the mechanics of impact of a single raindrop on a soil surface, while landscapes form over periods of thousands of years. These processes operate on scales of millimetres for single raindrops to mega-metres for continents. Erosion modelling thus covers quite a lot of ground. This book introduces the conceptual and mathematical frameworks used to formulate models of soil erosion and uses case studies to show how models are applied to a variety of purposes at a range of spatial and temporal scales. The aim is to provide land managers and others with the tools required to select a model appropriate to the type and scale of erosion problem, to show what users can expect in terms of accuracy of model predictions and to provide an appreciation of both the advantages and limitations of models. Problems covered include those arising from agriculture, the construction industry, pollution and climatic change and range in scale from farms to small and large catchments. The book will also be useful to students and research scientists as an up-to-date review of the state-of-art of erosion modelling and, through a knowledge of how models are used in practice, in highlighting the gaps in knowledge that need to be filled in order to develop even better models.

Millions of people are displaced each year due to conflicts worldwide, majority of them being displaced internally in their own countries. The number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) is two times that of refugees. The IDPs don’t get the aid meant for refugees as they don’t cross international borders and human rights violations are common during conflict and displacement. Due to the war on terror millions of people were displaced internally in northwest Pakistan including women and children and there were press reports of human rights violations and psychiatric morbidities among them. A major humanitarian crisis is feared if the displacement is prolonged. There was a need of research on human rights violations and psychiatric morbidities among these internally displaced women to inform policy makers, humanitarian agencies, human rights & women rights organizations to protect the rights of these women and avoid a major humanitarian crisis. This book estimates the psychiatric morbidities among the internally displaced women of northwest Pakistan & identifies the human rights violations of these women with policy implications & recommendations for the concerned stakeholders.

Population geography is a division of human geography. It is the study of the ways in which spatial variations in the distribution, composition, migration, and growth of populations are related to the nature of places. Population geography involves demography in a geographical perspective. It focuses on the characteristics of population distributions that change in a spatial context. Examples can be shown through population density maps. A few types of maps that show the spatial layout of population are choropleth, isoline, and dot maps. Population distribution means the pattern of where people live. World population distribution is uneven. Places which are sparsely populated contain few people. Places which are densely populated contain many people. Sparsely populated places tend to be difficult places to live. These are usually places with hostile environments e.g. Antarctica. Places which are densely populated are habitable environments e.g. Europe.Population density is a measurement of the number of people in an area.

The third objective aims at identifying the post-merger integration problems and issues for bank management. Only those branches, which merged after HDFC-CBoP merger, were considered for the survey.The study reveals that problems of post merger integration are mainly concerned with differing cultures, varied and different financial practices, and variety of softwares being used by the merging entities. Secondly, the integration process involves redistribution of work and retraining of the employees on a gigantic scale. The banking mergers in future have to be prepared for these challenges before hand;
