Gina Roberts A Literature Review on the Impact of Investment in Human Capital on Economic Success

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Champions of Human Capital in organisations, such as Human Resources directors, are in need of empirical evidence to justify to board members, CEOs and ultimately shareholders why financial investments into Human Capital should be increased or at least maintained. The research questions posed in this thesis take on the challenge to find empirical evidence that investment in Human Capital, through Human Resources, has a positive impact on intermediate as well as accounting and share-value indicators of organisational performance. This literature review summarises, integrates and evaluates research published between 1998 and 2003 pertaining to the direct and indirect relationship between Human Resources on different indicators of intermediate and bottom-line performance. The review is comprised of 31 articles clustered into the following topics: strategic HRM, Human Resources Development, technology, diverse workforces and flexible working conditions and methodological issues in HR-organisational performance research. Evidence for the direct and indirect impact of HR on organisational performance is discussed and the findings are interpreted with reference to Ostroff and Bowen’s Multi-Level Model (2000), which explains the individual, organisational and inter-level relationships between Human Resources and organisational performance. Enabling conditions that strengthen the HR-organisational performance relationship are identified. Methodological issues s...

Babatunde Kazeem Impact of Stock Market Performance Indices on Economic Growth

The controversy on the impact of stock market performance and economic growth and development is empirically evaluated in this study, using Nigerian data. This effort is spurred by the raging debate on the relevance of stock market in promoting economic growth. Using the Ordinary Least Square regression method, the empirical evidence suggest that stock market size and turnover ratio promote economic growth, while stock market liquidity hurts economic growth. Although our result suggests that stock mark performance indices promote economic growth and development, this evidence should be viewed with some caution. The measure of stock market performance used in this study may not be adequate. Although the market capitalization ratio (market capitalization/GDP), value of transactions traded ratio (value of transaction traded/GDP), and turnover ratio (value of transaction traded/market capitalization) as proxies of stock market performance has been popular in literature, it clearly does not include other indicators of stock market development like international integration, market concentration, regulatory and institutional indicators and stock market volatility.

Mayolo Alberto López Castellanos Agent Based Simulation Approach to Assess Supply Chain Complexity and its Impact on Performance

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

The problem of continuous acquisition of knowledge has been a key object of research in education and training policy in the Europe. In particular, the way continuous education is embedded in the work-related life course has been repeatedly investigated and analyzed in different supra- and international surveys. Therefore, the question of how to increase participation in continuous vocational training arises. Different sources predict that more and more companies will consider further training an investment in improved worker performance and economic productivity. Especially against the back...

Maria Shagina Joining a Prestigious Club. Cooperation with Europarties and Its Impact on Party Development in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine 2004-2015

Brussels's idea of a "wider Europe" implies that Europeanisation is not limited to EU member states. The EU can, so it claims, also exert impact beyond its borders. One of the channels of external EU influence is cooperation between Europarties and parties outside the Union. Through mutual visits and joint activities, non-EU parties become internationally socialised, i.e., are exposed to the Europarties' norms as well as values, and experience the rules as well as practices that shape European party-building. What are the incentives for Europarties and non-EU parties to cooperate with each other? What kind of, and how much, impact did cooperation have on party development in post-Soviet Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine? Based on eighty interviews with party officials, international donors and academics, Maria Shagina outlines the set of motivations that trigger cooperation between Europarties and non-EU parties, analyses the impact of cooperation on party ideology, organisational structure, and inter-party behaviour in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, and explores the implications of this cooperation on the standardisation, consolidation, and democratisation of the non-EU party systems. Her findings shed light on how prestige and domestic factors impede the penetration of EU norms and values in the non-EU party structures, and point to the failures of Europarties to adequately address problems of party-development in Eastern Europe. The book reveals the ways in whi...

Performance coaching is a modern and rapidly growing method used to assist development, and involves helping individuals to improve their performance in all areas of their life, with a particular emphasis on the workplace. Performance coaching draws parallels with NLP and often focuses on the psychology of excellence – making what’s good even better, and helping individuals keep ahead of the game. On an organisational level it can include helping managers to consider how to get the best from their staff, peers and superiors, as well as helping to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. A performance coach assists individuals in building on their successes and helps to design, plan and instigate successful business/life strategies. Despite its popularity confusion still surrounds coaching. It is a relatively new area and there is still a lack of understanding about how best to use coaching and in what specific situations it will be most effective. In addition to this, anyone can assume a performance/professional/business/life coach title without holding any particular qualification or registration. With this increased awareness and confusion the need for a no-nonsense book on the topic that offers trusted advice is needed all the more, which is where Performance Coaching For Dummies steps in.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Derby, course: Business economics - Performance Management, language: English, abstract: Performance is explained superficially, which is the achievement of quantified objectives. Performance has an important connotation that is the way that people choose to achieve the objectives. Therefore, performance means process and manner of functioning and operating (or behaviours) to attain beforehand desirable goals (or results) (Brumbach, 1988). The mixed model of performance management is suggested by Armstrong (2006) which is based on these simultaneous elements of performance that are behaviour and result. The considerable aspect of organisational performance management is to maintain the goal congruence. Performance management aligns the organisation's objectives with the individuals' goals. Many performance management theories apportion this alignment as a main endeavour of the performance management process such as Balanced Scorecard. Besides, performance management could converge to strategic development by some modification of its methods and facilitates indirect control of employees by giving a clear target (Otley and Fakiolas, 2000; Hemmer, 1998; Egan, 1995). Organisations usually utilise two main theories to be competent firms in their markets. Those theories are Porter's theory (1980, 1989) and resources and competenc...

Fiona Burger Impact Measurement to Improve Accountability of Nonprofits

Public scandals surrounding charitable nonprofit organizations have increased public scrutiny and criticism which resulted in an increased demand for accountability of charities and other nonprofit organizations. Reporting performance is necessary in order to be accountable for the organizations' performance. Performance reporting is more difficult in nonprofit organizations than in for-profit organizations since no profitability information can be communicated. Nonprofits tend to focus on other concepts to define performance; mainly efficiency, effectiveness and social value. The main theory on nonprofit performance is described in the Organizational Effectiveness literature. Impact assessment has been suggested as a way to measure nonprofit organizational performance. This concept is related to the effectiveness concept of goal attainment, but goes one step further and focuses on impact rather than mere outcomes. In this research a first attempt is made to measure the impact of a specific Dutch nonprofit organization, the Netherlands Heart Foundation. The impact is estimated on the costs related to AMI patients in the working population.

Angela Espinosa, Jon Walker COMPLEXITY APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY, A. THEORY AND APPLICATION

A major challenge of our times is to understand and manage the increasing complexity of socio-economic reality. This has immediate relevance for sustainable development. The impact of recent contributions from systems and complexity sciences in addressing this issue has not filtered down into effective practice — notably, there remain problems caused by the legacy of competing paradigms and the application of their associated methodologies. This book argues the urgency for the application of analytical tools that embody the principles of complexity management. The authors describe a theoretical framework based on complexity science with a focus on organisational and second order cybernetics, one that presents a powerful new insight into the concept of sustainability. The book also describes actual applications of the ideas in the area of organisational, societal and environmental management, and reflects upon the impact of such an approach on current practice.

Furthermore in this book is comprised of two experimental components. The first is preliminary experiment concerned with impact force measurements and the evaluation of basis weight, water jet inclination angles, water jet pressure on the mechanical performance (tensile strength, tear strength, bursting strength) of splittable bicomponents hydroentangled non-woven fabrics The second is the main experiment investigating the effect of water jets inclination angle, impact force, water jets pressure and fiber types on tensile properties of hydroentangled non-woven fabrics. The results indicate that the combination of impact force and inclined water jets in appropriate conditions improved the mechanical performance, and can be the possible solution for reducing energy costs.
