Provision of quality secondary education is known to provide a bridge between Primary, the labour market and tertiary education. The Jomtien conference in 1990 and the Dakar Declaration of 2000 have provided the benchmark for countries to improve their secondary education to realize education for all goals (UNESCO 2005). In this regard, Kenyan government in 2003 introduced free primary education and in 2008 began subsidized Secondary education. This initiative was meant to address critical challenges such as illiteracy, low quality education, low transition rate from Primary schools and low completion rates at secondary level. The purpose of this study therefore was to establish the role of subsidized secondary school funding programme in enhancing access to quality Education in Sabatia Sub-County, Kenya. Education systems can be centralised or decentralized. When an education system is centralised, broad policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures are centrally determined. As a result, school based interpretation of the policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures become crucial. Successful curriculum implementation therefore depends to a large extent on the teachers. As the key actors in curriculum implementation, teachers know what works best in the teaching and learning process. This then calls for high teacher participation in school based interpretation of the guiding frameworks. In this book an investigation into teacher involvement in curriculum implementation decisions at primary school level is presented. The findings revealed gaps in teacher involvement and recommendations point towards the need for deliberate full engagement of teachers since they are key implementers of the curriculum.

Findings reveal the mission of the MoES as to support, guide, coordinate, regulate and promote education. It acknowledges locally trained music teachers perceived as having low teaching efficacy because of inadequate training. Pupil’s response to class music is influenced by their ‘own music’. Results offer insights for music education’s future role, nature and character. Insufficient funding, limited content and lack of resources are factors inhibiting the development of music education in Uganda. The study recommends directions and a vision for music education if it is to survive and transform itself into an autonomous player in the education dispensation.

This edited volume explores various issues pertaining to the education of children with disabilities in Africa, the Caribbean and Middle East. As a group, persons with disabilities have been subjected to social, culturaland educational exclusions of various forms and for various socially-scripted reasons. In education, forinstance, individuals with disabilities have been altogether excluded from educational participation in manyparts of the developing world or they have been excluded from pursuing meaningfully beneficial higherlevels of education in developed countries like the United States. One of the social responses/remedies to thewidely-acknowledged exclusionary practices experienced by learners with disabilities has been the widespread implementation of inclusive practicesin the education of individuals with disabilities across countries, in the west and the developing regions of the world. A distinctive marker of differencein the way inclusive practices have been enacted in western countries versus those in the developing world has primarily stemmed from the fact thatmajority of western countries operate under funded mandates that also regulate the provision of education to persons with disabilities. While the idealof inclusion has been highly desirable, many of countries in the developing world have floundered in their implementation due to lack sound legislativeframework to guide implementation coupled with socio-cultural factors related to negative perceptions of dis...

Education and the State in Modern Peru illuminates how education was the site of ideological and political struggle in Peru during its early years as an independent state. Spanning 100 years and discussing both urban and rural education, it shows how school funding, curricula, and governance became part of the cultural process of state-building in Peru. Drawing on detailed historical research and data, G. Antonio Espinoza analyzes the factors that affected the development of primary schooling in the capital city of Lima and the surrounding provinces between 1821 and 1921. He focuses not only on state intervention, but also on key societal elements that affected the development of education during this century, including social demand for education, prevailing educational ideas, cultural change, and patronage.

Most of the developing countries are characterized by a weakness of human assets and are the most economic vulnerable in the world and yet these issues have a strong bearing on the success of e- government implementation in developing countries. In most of the developing regions where English is not the native language, availability of relevant and accessible content and the digital literacy are major issues. More than half of the population are below the poverty line or lives on less than $1.25(PPP) per day. Only 21.1% of the developing countries population use internet, compared to 71.6% of internet usage in developed countries. This study investigated the influence of income, education, ICT Infrastructure and electricity to e-government implementation in developing countries and concluded that the level of Income, Education and access to ICT Infrastructure affects citizens’ demand for e-government services whereas access to electricity doesn’t. We therefore propose customer segmentation as a good framework for e-government implementation in developing countries basing on situational analysis of developing countries and different existing approaches to e-government implementation

Parents sought integrated education to reduce the amount of time their children spent moving between three institutions: primary school, madrassa and Duksi from which they sought both secular and Islamic education. The school in this study adapted a bi-functional model of integration where both a madrassa providing Islamic education and a primary school providing secular education co-existed as one institution but operating independently. However, secular dominated Islamic education in this arrangement hence the need for a balanced curriculum that would give adequate attention to both religious and secular education so as to adequately cater for needs of both types education.

The study was on the disparities between language policy and implementation: An assessment of the extent to which Shona is used as a medium of instruction in the first three years of primary education in selected Masvingo Urban primary schools. The four schools selected were Victoria Junior, Helen McGie, St Don Bosco and Rujeko Primary Schools. The descriptive survey design was used with questionnaire and interview techniques employed to collect data. The population comprised of four heads, four teachers in charge of infant grades, twenty four teachers of infant grades and ninety - six pupils. The information collected was presented in tables and narrative forms for analysis and discussion. The research findings indicated that English is highly regarded as the medium of instruction from Grades 1 – 3. Shona was rather not opted for because of what respondents felt it failed to do for them. All the text books and teaching – learning materials are written in English. The pupils enjoy learning in English because of its supposedly acquired position from colonial period as compared to Shona. The research, therefore, concluded that unless Shona is incentivised people will not opt for it.

To execute the strategy implementation more effectively, this study proposes an integrated model combining the resource-based view of ‘McKinsey 7S’ and the industrial organization point of view. The model was tested through collecting primary data from employees of a disguised transformer manufacturer (TRANSCO). The findings prove that neither the resource-based nor the industrial organization is effective independently towards solving the strategy implementation problem, although the study suggests that the resource-based view is more reasonable than the industrial organization viewpoint. Indeed, the model of this study, which combines both viewpoints by employing the strategy formulation and the balanced scorecard, offers a more comprehensive solution and contributes to resolving the most difficult stage of strategic management—strategy implementation.

This book analyses English Language Teacher Education (ELTE) at Maseno University. The work assesses the implementation of the ELTE curriculum at the University, the students’ uptake of English Language and pedagogical knowledge, skills and attitudes and application of knowledge and skills acquired in the actual secondary school classrooms. The book describes in details the ELTE curriculum, its implementation, the classroom interaction by the teachers who had undergone ELTE at Maseno University, and their perception of ELTE in light of their classroom needs. The findings reveal the serious challenges facing ELTE at the University, which reduce the trainees’ confidence in the curriculum design and implementation. Given the fact that the typical Kenyan classroom was found to be characterized by severe shortages of English Language Learning resources in quality, quantity and variety; the ELTE courses were found to be lacking sensitivity to trainees’ classroom needs. This work, which contributes immensely to the understanding of University English Language teacher education in Kenya, recommends a re-think and changes to ELTE specifically, and to university teacher education in general.

This book reveals that the intended curriculum as represented by Zimbabwe's official social studies syllabus of 1982 has considerable potential for citizenship education. While the syllabus requires updating to incorporate post-1980 developments, it does not require a complete overhaul for it to promote citizenship education. An in-depth evaluation of the social studies curriculum at primary school in Harare leads to the conclusion that the problem is largely at implementation level. Distortion first occurs during textbook writing, official approval and publishing. This is then amplified at school and classroom level because of the dominance of the textbook as a teaching aid and the failure to make significant links to the actual environments and contexts in which pupils live. An examination-driven education system helps perpetuate a low quality citizenship curriculum largely characterized by rote learning and limited practical citizenship-oriented activities. The pupils themselves, when given the opportunity, are very keen on citizenship education. The ethos and climate of the school also have an important input into how young children experience citizenship education.

The right to education is clearly articulated in core international and national instruments. The vital role played by education in the socio-economic development of every country is universally recognised. There is a close relationship between the level of socio-economic development of a society and the average education level attained by its populace.Oxfam(2005) clearly notes that it is estimated that there are between 25 to 40 million children of school age living in nomadic pastoralist household of whom only 10-50% attend school. The book by interpreting the hindrances to access and completion of primary education of nomadic pastoralist girls will fore ground why girls are most vulnerable group suffering the repression of failure to access and complete formal education. The book therefore suggests the best practical ways of ensuring access and completion of primary education by pastoral nomadic girls to both parents and the policy makers in the Ministry of Education.
