Wheat is one of the most important small cereal crops in Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Productivity in the region has been unsatisfactory. There are a lot of production constraints attributed for this low productivity. The existence of genotype by environment interaction for instance is one of the serious problems. Therefore, this book tries to determine genotype by environment interaction and adaptability study of bread wheat genotypes. In this book, it is clearly discussed how genotypes had shown differential yield response across the environments. This was due to the specific adaptability of the genotypes. Therefore, rigorous adaptability analysis has to be made before drawing varietal recommendation.

Acacia plants particularly Acacia seyal are widely spread in Ethiopia, particularly in Tigray Region Southern Zone. The farmers’ uses these plant species for many purposes such as for fire wood, for construction purposes, for increasing the soil fertility and protect the soil from erosion and also used for shelter. However, no well organized study has been conducted on its nutritive value as a sole supplement and in mixture with concentrate feeds like wheat bran. Nevertheless, sheep were observed to consume the fallen leaves and pods of the browse species. Therefore, it is anticipated that supplementation of Acacia seyal pods alone or in mixture with wheat bran will bridge the gap in feed shortage during dry season and enable animals to maintain or slightly gain body weight (BW) in hay based feeding system.

Diversification of products and services from diverse on-farm trees allowed the traditional agroforestry systems of southern Ethiopia to be considered as sustainable farming systems over a timescale of centuries. Investigation of the diverse tree species on agroforestry for various products and services is beneficial to explore the relationships of some farm characteristics with tree species diversity. Very little academic literatures exist on the agroforestry systems of on-farm tree species diversity. This book, therefore provides a new findings on the characterization of tree species diversity, how the diversity of trees and shrub species are linked to farm characteristics and composition of tree species under agroforestry land use system. It also provides new ideas on the importance value index and use-diversity of different tree species. A complete inventory of on-farm tree species and farm characteristics is analyzed. The analysis should give some knowledge and should be primarily useful to professionals in fields of agroforsetry and agriculture.

Rust diseases specifically leaf rust caused by Puccinia recondita. f. sp. tritici, is globally important fungal of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) that is responsible for significant yield losses; up to 40% worldwide. Due to rapid change of pathogen races, single gene resistance is short lived in wheat cultivars. Alternatively, a more durable form of resistance is attributed to slow leaf rusting for which certain genotypes have been identified and characterized. Genetic studies indicate that slow rusting resistance is under polygenic control with moderately high heritability. Such resistance is controlled by a number of minor genes also referred to as adult plant resistance (APR) genes. Although 10-12 slow rusting genes are known to be present in CIMMYT spring wheat, only two genes Lr34 and Lr46 have been characterized for slow rusting. The present research work was proposed to characterize the effect of different slow rusting gene(s) on spread of leaf rust. Estimates indicate that a majority of the earth's land has been seriously degraded. One of the key degradation problems is poor soil health, which has been identified as a key constraint in agricultural productivity and reducing rural poverty in many parts of the tropics, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia's economy is primarily based on agriculture. However, this sector is increasingly being confronted with a rapidly growing population, and this has resulted in land use/cover changes. The changes in land use disturbs ecosystem balance and lead to a significant change in the physical, chemical, and biological soil health thereby yield declines. Half of the Ethiopian highland arable lands are moderately to severely degrade. Tigray, the Northern region of Ethiopia, suffers from extreme land degradation and soil health deterioration. Agulae catchment, the study area which is found in Eastern Tigray also has similar problems. Since previous studies on factors affecting soil health depletion has not been made at a catchment level, this study was conducted to fill the existing knowledge gap on the effects of and use change on soil health and its implication on soil management.

Wheat is one of the most important domesticated crops grown around the world. Wheat seed storage proteins represent an important source of energy in wheat, being involved in determination of bread making quality. Seed storage proteins are traditionally classified as gliadins and glutenins. Glutenins are divided into low molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS), 30-50KDa and high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS), 80-120KDa. HMW-GSs are encoded at genes Glu-A1, Glu-B1 and Glu-D1. Although HMW-GSs only occupy around 10% of wheat seed storage proteins, they play a major role in bread making quality. A single hexaploid variety could contain 6 HMW-GSs. Protein profiling is the most effective tool for studying the genetic diversity of HMW-GS in wheat varieties.The objective of this study was to perform the protein profiling of wheat HMW-GSs of 21 Pakistan’s wheat varieties. Different allelic combinations of Glu-1 loci were identified. At Glu-A1 locus,2*, at Glu-B1 locus,17+18 and 7+8 and Glu-D1 locus,2+12 alleles were dominant in 21 experimental wheat varieties.

With no exceptions, all federations exercise intergovernmental relations. It is an inherited and inevitable part of a federal system. We are living in the world where 40 percent of states are under federal systems. Some Federations develop intergovernmental relations by the constitution that establishes federal system. Some expand it through legislation. Other establish and rely on independent institutions that manage different orders of government relations. Ethiopia, a multi-ethnic and multilingual state is a federal state structure since 1995 in order to accommodate diversity which is the manifestation not only of Ethiopia but also eastern parts of Africa. Self-rule and shared rule as one principle of a federal system became the only option to protect Ethiopia from disintegration and never ending war. It transformed Ethiopia from dead end to a new beginning.However,as far as the issue of intergovernmental relations is concerned neither the constitution nor the institutions that exist deal with how should the relationship look like. This research relates to the two-phase mosaic made by shrubs and intershrub patches as a simple form of landscape diversity, and aims to study its effect on ground-dwelling beetle diversity. I studied the effect of shrubs on beet;e diversity with emphasis on the difference between shrub patch and intershrub patch. This difference is termed "contrast". The study was carried out in two stations within Israel - (1) an arid, shrub-poor ecosystem (Avdat) and (2) a semi-arid shrub-rich ecosystem (Lehavim). Results of pitfall trapping showed that more beetles were found under shrub patches in the arid site, but in the semi-arid ecosystem beetles were more abundant in the open patches. In order to understand the drivers behind these opposite patterns, I performed field observations of beetle movement, by looking at dominant Adesmia (Tenebrionidae) species. Their behavior showed strong links to the refuge offered and shading effect of shrubs. Results of a transplant experiment support the findings that shrub structure determines beetle behavior. The effect of the shrub-open patch mosaic on beetles is an example for the importance of landscape diversity in determining species diversity.

Nominal GDP is used as dependent and proxy variable for Economic growth while independent variables are physical capital, active labor force, terms of trade for measure of openness, government expenditure and human capital in the form of expenditure on health and education. Accordingly, the empirical finding shows that human capital in the form of education and health investment has consistent and significant long run effect on economic growth of Ethiopia at 5% level of significance. This book presents a study that focuses on the concepts of functional tissue engineering (FTE) and stem cell technology in an attempt to apply such technologies in the dental field. In this study, we focused on the effect of mechanical compression on stimulating the odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells. The pulp cells were isolated, their differentiation potentials to the angiogenic and neurogenic lineages were tested, and were stimulated mechanically in a custom built bioreactor to differentiate into odontoblasts. The results were promising, showing the ability of mechanical stimulation to induce the odontogenic differentiation of the isolated pulp stem cells. This book should be useful to researchers in the fields of tissue regeneration and stem cells technology or anyone who is interested in learning the concepts of stem cells isolation and differentiation.

Fertilizer suitability mapping is the way of determining nutrients demanded by specific crop type on the basis of soil sample testing results. It is a very important method for modern precision agriculture to increase fertilizer use efficiency and environmental friendliness. In order to make efficient fertilizer application for wheat at Lume Watershed, the book tried to map the plant macro nutrients, physical land suitability and diammonium phosphate (DAP) suitability for wheat. Starting from soil sample collection to final map, standard laboratory analysis methods plus GIS and remote sensing tools were used. Because both potassium and nitrogen showed non-significant variation within the watershed, fertilizer suitability map was only made for phosphorous variability. The DAP requirement for wheat was determined as the deference of phosphorous critical level for wheat from initial phosphorus level in the soil. Finally by applying Krignig interpolation DAP suitability map was prepared for wheat. The DAP requirement map of the area reveals that about 51.38%, 20.25%, 18.40% and 8.43% need 50 to75 kg/ha, 75 to 100kg/ha, 25 to 50kg/ha and greater than 100kg/ha respectively.
