The reading skill is one of the most important and useful skills in language learning, particularly in EFL contexts. Finding more effective ways of improving this crucial skill has always been a major concern of teachers and educators, though every teacher and educator has looked at reading from their own perspective. Some have focused on vocabulary as an indispensable element. Others have shifted their attention toward how words are combined to form sentences within a text. Still others have moved beyond the level of sentence and emphasized discourse level features. Depending on their general view of reading, the proponents of each school of thought have developed different types of activities. The aim of this book is to compare the effectiveness of vocabulary, syntax, and discourse-oriented activities on L2 reading comprehension.

Communicating accurately and fluently is certainly the ultimate objective of any foreign language learner. Yet, with limited knowledge and inadequate communication skills EFL learners are likely to experience communication breakdowns which are most of the times the outcome of lexical gaps. With this in mind, learners are in need of some strategies that will enable them to interact accurately and assist them in overcoming communication difficulties. Communication strategies are, in fact, crucial in helping EFL learners to communicate successfully especially when encountering speech production breakdowns. The present study investigates oral communication strategies, focusing primarily on its function in adjusting lexical gaps instances in Moroccan high school EFL learners' interlanguage.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: The aim of this evidence-based study is to investigate the use of the bilingual electronic dictionary strategy to improve EFL/ESL secondary school students` vocabulary learning. Three aspects have been studied in depth: the effect of using the electronic bilingual dictionary strategy on improving EFL students' vocabulary learning, the attitudes of the students and the teachers towards the target strategy, and the students` ability to use the bilingual electronic dictionary. The findings of this study indicate that the bilingual electronic dictionary has a positive and an effective role in the process of vocabulary learning. Moreover, the students show positive attitudes towards using the bilingual electronic dictionary. Nevertheless, instructors may show negative attitudes towards the target strategy for certain reasons . The analysis of data further revealed that the critical point that affects the evaluation of the target strategy is the ability to use the electronic dictionary. If the students and teachers are not able to use the bilingual electronic dictionary, they may show negative attitudes towards it and the strategy will then be useless. Thus, the study suggests some recommendations for using the target strategy effectively for EFL/ESL secondary students vocabulary learning and overall lexical acquisition.

Tayebeh Fani Emotional Intelligence and English Reading Comprehension Ability. A Case Study from Iran

The emotional intelligence (EI) construct is a relatively new concept with little empirical research. This study was an attempt to find the relationship between EI, gender, major, and reading comprehension ability of Iranian EFL learners. For this purpose, 268 students completed the Bar-On EQ inventory (1997) which included 133 items and took a reading comprehension test. It was found that females outperformed males in the reading comprehension test. However, no significant relationship was found between gender and major on one hand and reading comprehensions ability on the other hand. Subsequent data analysis revealed that the relationship between four EI scales (interpersonal, stress management, adaptability, and general mood) and reading comprehension ability was significant. However, no significant relationship was found between intrapersonal scale and reading comprehension ability. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between EI subscales and reading comprehension positive except for independence and assertiveness. The implications of the study and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Al-Mashaqba Nisreen Pedagogy and Strategies in Writing for the Arab Learners of English

Pedagogy and Strategies in Writing for the Arab Learners of English sets a new benchmark in EFL situations in the Arab world. Writing by far is the most complex language skill, more so if it has to do with a foreign language as English is in this part of the world. Dr. Nisreen teaches English at Qassim University, KSA. Before she took up her current assignment, she had the opportunity to work with secondary level school children in Jordan. Thus her vast and varied exposure to a variety of Arab learners gave her the right insight into the drawbacks of the EFL teaching conditions and the needs of the learners. This book offers teaching strategies to tackle the writing issues of the learners. While it is true that no pedagogy or teaching plan can be a fool proof solution to EFL class dynamics, this book can act as a ready reference for many teachers who may improvise upon strategies suggested here.

Hamed Ghaemi Online Reading Strategies and the Choice of Offline Reading Strategies

According to some unofficial researches and my own experience in the field of teaching reading skill , I have found that some students had many problems when they were being asked to read some online text especially when they were supposed to participate in an on-line reading comprehension test. So I tried to find out the reason or reasons of this problem. The first probability for this problem was that the difference between on-line and off-line environment influenced the students' performance in an on-line reading comprehension test. The second probability that I have made for this problem was that having a high level of IT literacy had any effect on the performance of students in the on-line reading comprehension test or not. And the last hypothesis for investigating the reason of this problem was that students may have employed inappropriate strategies while they were reading on-line. All these probabilities and hypotheses have led the researcher toward formulating the null hypotheses of this study. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of on-line Reading strategies on the choice of off-line Reading strategies of Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners.

There are several ways of enhancing students' motivation in the EFL classroom but an important one is to create the lesson on the basis of the learners' interests. Everyone who looks back on former school days, might remember that learning was more enjoyable when the topics were interesting and furthermore, when they were handled in an exiting way.The intention of this study is to present several ideas of improving the general motivation in the classroom. In addition to that, the current interests of students from German secondary schools and the consideration of the interests in the common English classroom will be presented with the help of a questionnaire. Part one gives an overview of the terms interest and motivation in its psychological context and in relation to their meaning in the English classroom. The second part mentions the importance of incorporating students' interest in the learning classroom. Further, the third part deals with several possibilities of creating motivational conditions in the L2 classroom. Part four presents the results and the evaluation of a research which was conducted on the basis of the theoretical aspects. Part five deals with the content of the Lower Saxony Core Curriculum and the way it considers the students' interests. Finally, the author sums up the results of the research and draws a conclusion.

P. David Pearson, University of California, Berkeley, and founding editor of the Handbook of Reading Research. Reading for Understanding is a monumental achievement. It was a monumental achievement when it came out as a first edition in 1999, bringing years of rigorous reading research together in a framework for teaching that made sense in actual secondary school classrooms. Now, just thirteen years later, Schoenbach and Greenleaf have several randomized clinical trials and multiple on-going studies at their fingertips to demonstrate the effects of this approach for developing the reading and thinking of young people in our nation?s middle and high school classrooms, as well as in community college classrooms. Mirzaei Mona, Mowlaie Bahram Spoken grammar features instruction and raising learners. awareness

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of explicit instruction of four main spoken grammar features of heads, tails, progressive past tense and ellipsis on raising EFL learners' awareness of these features in pre- intermediate level. Although these features constitute main part of native speaker spoken grammar, they have been extensively, if not totally, ignored in ELT textbooks. Therefore, the grammar types EFL learners confront in their course books is not the ones seen in native speaker speech but rather the ones mostly observed in their written language. The result is, after some years of learning speaking, learners come to write well than to speak well! Therefore, the researcher decided to do an empirical study to find out whether by explicitly instructing learners on the features taken out of spoken corpora, their awareness could be raised or not.The 23 participants were from Iran, Shahriar at pre- intermediate level aged 15-23.The paired samples t- test conducted indicated the instruction has been highly successful in raising learners' awareness of the commonly ignored features.

The Brilliant Activities for Reading Comprehension series (2nd Edition) addresses the Programmes of Study for reading comprehension in the new (2014) national curriculum for England. The importance of being able to read for meaning should never be underestimated. The ability to decode text is not enough. It is vital that children understand what they are reading. More importantly, it is fundamental that they enjoy what they are reading, so that they grow up to become lifelong readers. The passages in the Brilliant Activities for Reading Comprehension series are designed to do just that. They provide children with a variety of engaging, enjoyable texts that will grab their attention, and indeed their teacher's attention as well. The types of comprehension passages range from newspaper articles and dialogues, to plays, stories and poems. They gradually increase in difficulty as you progress through the book, and through the series, encouraging children to develop their ability to read for meaning and use a range of strategies to engage with the text. Tasks range from simple factual recall and vocabulary work to more open-ended questions enabling the reader to provide a more personal response. There are detailed suggestions for integrating writing, speaking and other literacy tasks with the passages. The cross-curricular activities provide a wealth of ideas for extending the passages further and are ideal for fast-finishers.

Faramarzzadeh Khaneqah Mousa The Impact of Task-Induced Involvement on EFL Learners. Vocabulary Ret

Undoubtedly, it seems that vocabulary acquisition is considered as a crucial issue in second language acquisition. Furthermore, it should be taken into consideration that learning a foreign or second language requires the acquisition of thousands of words. Accordingly, language learners look for effective ways to increase opportunities for retaining new words in long-term memory, but they often complain forgetting new words soon after learning. On the other hand, task is seen as a piece of classroom work which involves learners in comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target language while their attention is principally focus on meaning rather than form (Nunan, 1991). Therefore, 50 subjects were chosen as experimental n=25 and control group n=25, then, three tasks were applied to experimental group as reading comprehension by using context, dictionary, and marginal glosses, respectively. Having collected data, analysis of covariance was applied for data coding. Based on the hierarchy efficiency in the development of vocabulary retention the efficiency of contextual task was verified more than other tasks.

Anna Gevorgyan Implementing Differentiated Instruction in an Armenian Efl Setting

A glance at a typical classroom situation in Armenia will reveal a ubiquitous attitude: 'best' students are the most motivated ones and are the limelight of the class; therefore the teacher prefers to work merely with them, whereas 'bad' students are laid- back and disregarded by the teacher. Can this situation ever change? The crux of this study is the implementation of differentiated instruction for adult learners of English in an Armenian setting who have had previous exposure to language. A classroom experiement is described as one of the ways to differentiate EFL instruction based on learners' learning styles. The book provides an overview of differentiating instruction, describes the process and the outcomes of the classroom research, as well as suggests further directions for research. The thesis may be of interest to EFL teachers and learners, as well as researchers who want to practice differentiation in their classrooms.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 18.50, , course: The Role of Corrective Feedback in Writing Improvement: A Case of Iranian EFL Learners, language: English, abstract: Previous research has shown that corrective feedback on an assignment helps learners reduce their errors during the revision process. Does this finding constitute evidence that learning resulted from the feedback? Differing answers play an important role in the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of error correction, suggesting a need for empirical investigation. In this study, two groups of EFL learners were asked to write an in-class narrative. Their papers were collected, revised and returned to them in the next session. Half of the students had their errors underlined and used this feedback in the revision task while the other half did the same task without feedback. Results matched those of the previous studies: the underlined group was significantly more successful than the control group. Later on, the students were identically taught in 9 sessions. In the 12th session, however, the students were asked to write the same narrative they had produced in the first and second session as a measure of long-term learning. On this measure, the two groups were virtually identical. Thus, successful error reduction during revision is not a predicator of learning as the two groups differed dramatically on the former but were indistinguisha...

In order to fully answer that question this capstone addressed the following question as well: what teaching strategies are effective for developing fluency in an EFL setting for children? The method of study was a systematic review of literature. Key influencers were Björklund and Suni (2000) and Björklund (2005). They studied a Finnish immersion school that used content-based instruction in a multilingual program with successful results. Another key influencer was Pérez-Vidal (2013). She discussed findings of several studies on CLIL programs in Spain and compared results of intensive ESL in Quebec with CLIL in Spain. The literature showed that content-based EFL instruction is the most effective approach for elementary EFL and effective teaching strategies are stories combined with drama, rhymes, and songs.

Their careful work on developing disciplinary literacy among all students represents a passion for and commitment to supporting students?and their teachers?in reading for understanding, which translates to reading for enjoyment, self-awareness, learning, and for purposeful and informed action in our society. ?Elizabeth Moje, Arthur F.
