Titanium diboride/Titanium carbide (TiC-TiB2) composites are promising materials for applications such as super-hard cutting tools and abrasives, wear resistant parts and space vehicles. It is very difficult to densify these materials using conventional sintering techniques. In this study, reactive sintering was used to simultaneously synthesis TiB2 +TiC composites in different combinations (amounts) of carbon in the stable other conditions same as time, temperature,... It was found that the chemical reaction between the starting Titanium metal, Boron and Carbon particles could be complete after sintering at 1200⁰C for 1 h, producing a pure TiB2-TiC ceramic composite. Various carbon content causes the microstructure of the final products was different.

Recrystallization has been extensively utilized for variety of materials to modify the microstructure and achieving desired mechanical properties. Therefore, characterization of recrystallization is an important aspect. However, most of the existing characterization techniques are either not in-situ in nature or too complex. In the present work, a novel method of spline-based isogeometric approximation and robust numerical differentiation has been originated and employed to the in-situ resistivity data to characterize recrystallization. It has been shown that this method is able to reveal the elusive effects of recrystallization from the in-situ electrical resistivity measurements. An extensive experimental work on Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Fe-Mn alloys, which are extensively used in automotive industry, showed that this method is sensitive, reliable, accurate and efficient. An extensive literature on the recrystallization and related phenomena, resistivity measurements and cubic splines has also been provided in the book. This work should be useful to the people involved in research and development activities, especially characterization of materials, in industry as well as academia.

We have studied the mechanisms of a pulsed laser impact on the magnetization configuration in ferrimagnetic multilayered magnetic nanostructures, specifically, tunneling magnetic junctions taking into account laser-induced kinetic effects. The mechanism of such the laser-induced impact is a complex process of laser-induced thermal demagnetization of magnetic sublattices with subsequent biasing by internal magnetic fields of different nature. Depending on an intensity of laser pulses, it can be effective internal magnetic fields of laser irradiation or internal magnetic fields connected with different rates of the heat demagnetization of ferrimagnetic sublattices. It is shown that investigated ferrimagnetic nanostructures are characterized very small times of the laser-induced remagnetization, which can attain subpicosecond scales.

Groundwater polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations underneath a contaminated site were measured with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). As a form of soil flushing is planned as an in situ treatment for some sectors at the site, a cube of approximately 10 m³ was used to test the treatment. To gain a deeper understanding of the contamination situation of the test cube, a three dimensional visualisation of the pollutants distribution in the cube was created. Total PAH measurements were compared with eluate PAH measurements in two different visualisations, showing that the contamination situation is heterogeneous and complex, as the site contains PAH and hetero-PAH contaminations which vary largely in their composition. The contaminated groundwater of the in situ test plant was measured for PAHs and hetero-PAHs with GC-MS. It was found that the hetero-PAH composition of the groundwater changed significantly (p <0.01) over time, enforcing the observation that tar contaminations with different composition were present in the test cube. The analysis was added by two biotest systems: the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri and the algae Chlorella vulgaris.

An experimental investigation has been done on the CO2 laser in order to study the feasibility of applying this laser to the water-jet-guided laser cutting technique. The characteristics such as water jet quality, reduction of heat affected zone, laser beam divergence, total internal reflection of light in water jet, and limitations in using the CO2 laser in the laser micro-jet cutting technique are studied computationally and experimentally. The chamber is designed using CATIA, analyzed with the ANSYS and fabricated by the CNC machining with employing AA6061. The value of 50 mm is found to be reliable upper limit for cutting distance. The 500W power and 10.6µm wavelength for CO2 laser are not suitable for coupling with water jet because of high heat absorption of water. The couplings of the laser light and the water jet have been achieved experimentally. Heat absorption of water, the divergence of the laser beam, and some of the laser characteristics have been recognized as the main limitations of this technique. The study is much relevant to cutting industry and precision manufacturing, where it’s necessary to get fine and precise cutting surface with minimum heat damage.

This water may either be treated or untreated. River banks could be very busy, varied activities ranging from farming to industrial activities and other domestic household activities are conducted. The present study aimed at investigating the potential sources of selected heavy metal contaminants in River Mukurumudzi, Kwale County. Water and sediments were sampled in four points along the river impacted by mining, human settlements and agricultural activities for three different seasons. The samples were analyzed for Iron, Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic using an AAS. Sediment quality was also analysed by the calculation of CF and I-geo values. Interpretation of results was conducted using Minitab statistical software and Excel spreadsheets. The range of metals in water during the dry season was Fe (0.19-0.32) mg/l, Pb, Cu, Cd and As were below the detection limits. The range of metals in water during the short rain was Fe (0.12-1.25) mg/l and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in water during the long rain season was Fe (0.07-1.82) mg/l, Cu (0.08-0.11) mg/l and BDL for all the other analysed metals. Zeolite Y was used as the support material and modified using three different active metals i.e. Ti, La and Fe.The modification of the encapsulated TiO2 by Fe metal enhanced the decolorization efficiency of amaranth dye more efficiently than its modification with La metal. The maximum decolorization efficiency was about 97 % with maximum COD removal of 57 % after 120 min of reaction. The catalytic reaction was assisted by an ultrasonic irradiation source at 50 W for the output power and the frequency was 40 kHz. Different operational parameters were investigated for the best of higher catalytic activity.The developed sonocatalysts were successfully characterized using different characterization techniques.The Fe ions loaded onto encapsulated titanium caused a significant reduction in band gap energy from 3.55 eV for bare TiO2 to 2.8 for Fe loaded on encapsulated (0.8%Fe/Ti-NaY). The synthesized sonocatalyst possessed high surface areas and demonstrated high reusability potential for many consecutive cycles with acceptable amount of Fe leaching.

The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the potential of CO2 laser (10.6 µm) associated with fluorides in inhibiting enamel erosion. Human enamel samples were divided into 9 groups: G1: eroded enamel , G2: APF gel, G3: AmF/NaF gel, G4: AmF/SnF2 solution, G5: CO2 laser (λ =10.6 µm) + APF gel, G6: laser + AmF/NaF gel, G7: laser + AmF/Sn F2 solution, G8: laser and G9: sound enamel. The CO2 laser parameters were: 0.45J/cm2, 15μs, 128Hz. After surface treatment, samples (except group G9) were immersed in 1% citric acid (pH 4.0, 3min). Knoop Surface microhardness (SMH) (0.49N, 20s) was measured at baseline and after surface softening. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA with subsequent pairwise comparisons (p <0.05). It was concluded that AmF/NaF and APF application have shown a potential to protect and control erosion progression in dental enamel and that CO2 laser irradiation at 0.45J/cm2 did not influence its efficacy. Solely CO2 laser at the same conditions may also significantly decrease enamel erosive mineral loss, although at lower levels.

Conventional ultrasound testing technique usually employs a piezoelectric transducer to both generate and detect ultrasonic waves to perform non-destructive inspection. However, this type of transducer presents some drawbacks as: requirement of a coupling medium, high temperatures are not supported, narrow bandwidth, low spatial resolution, load the sample, and is hard to be used in complex geometries. In contrast, the laser ultrasonics technique can overcome these problems by taking advantage of the weightless non-contact nature of light, and both generation and detection of ultrasonic waves can be accomplished by optical devices: the generation is usually performed by a high power pulsed laser, while the detection is achieved by an optical sensor (generally an interferometer). In this book we present the development of an intensity-modulated fiber optic angular displacement sensor capable to detect ultrasonic waves and to work as the detector on a laser ultrasonics system. This sensor is able to detect angular displacement in the range of microradians, presents high sensitivity, optical fiber compatibility, wide bandwidth and, furthermore, is simple to assemble and low cost.
