Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,3, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institute of Information Systems), language: English, abstract: The Information Systems (IS) research discipline is undergoing a serious identity crisis, seeking its sphere of activity to be relevant in practice and rigorous in scientific considerations. One reason for this is the strengthening of the Design Science approach. This new discipline developed as a synergy from aspects of engineering, architecture, and industrial design and is employed in the design of IT artifacts and software systems. Design Science is becoming a powerful trend in IS research (Vahidov 2006). It gives the IS discipline a new and more detailed focal point as pertains to the application of software and IT artifact development which is growing in importance in IS research over the time (Weber 2003; Orlikowski and Iacono 2001; Cross 2001). IS practitioners ask for new and innovative design approaches, dealing with the evolving organizational and inter-organizational tasks. The way these tasks are executed, in close cooperation with the practical business world, seems to be insufficiently considered. The debate in IS research is carried out between traditional scientists and the knowledge-producing researchers/practitioners and "it could be argued that research aimed at developing IT systems, at improving IT practice, has been more successful and impor...

Brave New Words

From Stargate and Droid to Zero Gravity and Force Field, this historical dictionary is filled with fun and fascinating entries on all things science fiction. It's a unique window into the entire genre, through the words invented and passed along by science fictions most talented writers, critics, and fans. Each entry includes numerous citations of the words usage, from the earliest known appearance forward. Drawn not only from science fiction novels and short stories, citations are also taken from mainstream publications, fanzines, screenplays, newspapers, comics, songs, and the Internet. This historical look at the language of science fiction shows how many of the words we consider everyday vocabulary, including spacesuit (1929), blast off (1937), and robot (1920), have roots in imaginative literature rather than hard science. In fact, science fiction has created a wealth of language later adopted by the sciences and popular culture. Also, it is often surprising how old some of these terms are. Death Ray, for instance, dates to 1915, and Science Fiction itself has been in use since 1851. Winner of a 2008 Hugo Award, Brave New Words represents the shared language of the entire genre, including the vocabulary of science fiction criticism and science fiction fans. Not only a useful reference, an informative history, and an entertaining browse, this book is also a document of the enduring legacy of science fiction. It is a must-have for every science fiction writer or fan, wheth...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Information Management, University of Namibia (Department of Library and Information Science), course: Master of Information Science, language: English, abstract: This study investigated the information needs and seeking behaviour of pastors in Namibia. The purpose of the study was to establish the information required by pastors to carry out their work, how they seek information and the problems they encounter in doing so. A mixed-method approach research was used to meet the objectives of the study. A stratified quota sample of 200 pastors was used based on Walpole's formula for proportions. One hundred and thirty-eight (69%) participants responded to the questionnaire, while 16 pastors from different denominations in Windhoek, purposively selected as key informants, were interviewed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) basic level descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data from the questionnaires, while content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data from the interviews. The findings of this research are that pastors need information for counselling, community development, administration, evangelism, preaching, teaching, public relations and leading a service. When pastors do not find information from formal sources (Bible concordances, Bible commentaries, Bible translations, etc.) in their personal libraries, they turn to informal sources of information (Holy Spirit and other ...

Data Science and Analytics for Ordinary People is a collection of blogs I have written on LinkedIn over the past year. As I continue to perform big data analytics, I continue to discover, not only my weaknesses in communicating the information, but new insights into using the information obtained from analytics and communicating it. These are the kinds of things I blog about and are contained herein.Data science and analytics have been used as synonyms on occasion. In reality data science includes data modeling, data mining, data analysis, database architecture and so on. Analytics is what we do to make sense of the data. That is, we take data and turn it into information for business decision makers. This our course implies that we translate our data science jargon into English.

Patrick Zwickl Graphical Debugging of QVT Relations using Transformation Nets

Diploma Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1, Vienna University of Technology (Institute of Software Technology and Interactive Systems), language: English, abstract: Model transformations (MT) play a key role in the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) paradigm, leading to the standardization of the Query/View/Transformation (QVT) model transformation language by the Object Management Group (OMG). Until now, however, this language did not attract the same interest as the Unified Modeling Language (UML), because of the lack of adequate debugging facilities which are necessary regarding the following three problem areas: First, declarative languages like QVT Relations (QVT-R) hides the operational semantics of transformations. Only the information provided by the interpreter, as well as the tendered inputs and returned outputs are available for tracking the progress of transformations. Furthermore, the ordering of transformation application is hidden by the MT engines providing only a black-boxes view to the users. This can lead to the problem of impedance mismatches between design and runtime. These characteristics of QVT-R are assets for developing, but are handicaps for debugging. Second, QVT-R code is specified on higher abstraction level than its execution and state-of-the-art debugging. This deteriorates the ability to deduce causes from produced results. Third, the information content responsible for operating...

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Debrecen (Regnum-M Educational Co. / University of Debrecen), course: English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, language: English, abstract: It is obvious that second language acquisition is a very inevitable phenomenon in language learning procedure, hence there is a whole library of books dealing with SLA. Contemporary findings (Pléh, 2010) have also showed that LA is one of the most important processes in our life, determining the whole procedure of language learning, not only in the case of second language, but also in the case of our mother tongue. Moreover, the whole process includes memorizing things, conceptualization, connecting cognitive information and eventual accuracy in the use of language. Interestingly enough, contemporary findings have also proved (Deb K. Roy et al., 2002) that first language acquisition begins even before the birth of the child, which means that the adaptation to the new circumstances and verbalcommunication starts in the mother's uterus. These new researches and our devotion to medical disciplines1 have made us compose an essay on the biological factors of Second Language Acquisition. No doubt, biological and neurobiological factors are very severely important parts of LA procedures, however, they are not really put into the focus of linguistic experts. The reason for this might be traced in several things...

Michael A Tewell IMMORTALITY. The Science of Forbidden Fruit

IS IMMORTALITY HIDDEN WITHIN OUR DNA? Lawyer-researcher Michael A. Tewell says "YES!" Our bodies die, but the law of information conservation states that information cannot be created or destroyed. If true, then is not our individuality the very expression of information we attain during our lifetime? How would evolution respond to a natural law that forbids the destruction of any information? Is not our individuality the child of this “unique information?” Like pieces of a puzzle, Michael A. Tewell uses scientific discoveries in human evolution, genetics, biophysics, neuroscience and quantum theory to build a theoretical model of what evolution may have created by adapting our genetic code to comply with the natural law of information conservation. But, be warned. Expect that what he has discovered will change your life! Part scientific mystery, part personal memoir, IMMORTALITY: The Science of Forbidden Fruit follows the author back in time to his youth; to explore how the author came to envision a life after death without the need for religious faith. How did a near-death-experience transform a shy, six-year-old, who dreamed of a simple life of Christian faith, into a fearless trial lawyer, defender of the poor—and a religious skeptic? Is evolutionary immortality the “Forbidden Fruit” of science that Christianity has feared for so long? Make your own decision with IMMORTALITY: The Science of Forbidden Fruit

Bachelor Thesis from the year 1982 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, University of the West Indies, course: Caribbean Studies Project (UC300), language: English, abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the French Creole language situation in Dominica from a largely sociolinguistic standpoint. It is hoped that it will become a valuable addition to the limited data on Caribbean Creoles and Dominican French-Creole, in particular. There exists in Dominica a rather complex linguistic situation consisting of a continuum of English-based creoles and a French-based creole all of which exist alongside the official language, Standard English. While the English-based creoles remain the language of the masses, the French Creole is considered to be the cultural language of Dominica. Data for this paper was obtained, to a limited extent, from research; there being very little documented information on the French Creole spoken in Dominica. For the most part, information was obtained from personal interaction with creole speakers, personal experience and to a lesser extent, from interviews with Government officials involved in the movement to preserve and promote the French Creole. Valuable information was also obtained from elderly relatives and family friends in the form of riddles, proverbs, anecdotes and much of the material which makes up the glossary. This paper will show that the French Creole has survived periods of criticism and obsc...

Ca Da Birant, Ozlem Akta, Yalc N. Cebi Root-Suffix Seperation of Turkish Words

Defining the structure of a language gives information about that language. To define the structure, we should start to observe from smaller parts. These parts are roots and the suffixes for agglutinative languages. Turkish is also a agglutinative language like Finnish, Hungarian, etc. To get the morphological structure, we should be able to seperate the words to their roots and suffixes according to rules of order. This book explains how to get these information by computers without using any statistical methods.

Project Report from the year 2018 in the subject Computer Science - Technical Computer Science, , course: Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Modeling and Forecasting of the financial market have been an attractive topic to scholars and researchers from various academic fields. The financial market is an abstract concept where financial commodities such as stocks, bonds, and precious metals transactions happen between buyers and sellers. In the present scenario of the financial market world, especially in the stock market, forecasting the trend or the price of stocks using machine learning techniques and artificial neural networks are the most attractive issue to be investigated. As Giles explained, financial forecasting is an instance of signal processing problem which is difficult because of high noise, small sample size, non-stationary, and non-linearity. The noisy characteristics mean the incomplete information gap between past stock trading price and volume with a future price. The stock market is sensitive with the political and macroeconomic environment. However, these two kinds of information are too complex and unstable to gather. The above information that cannot be included in features are considered as noise. The sample size of financial data is determined by real-world transaction records. On one hand, a larger sample size refers a longer period of transaction records; on the other hand, large sample size increases the uncertainty of financial environm...

They represent a promising way to lead developing countries on a path of more rapid development. But ICT for Development (ICT4D) is not only an issue of the development society. For many multinational operating software companies developing continents like Africa with a population of almost half a billion represent a huge, still untapped market. The German software company SAP AG for example is engaged in the African Drive Project (ADP). ADP is improving the South African education system by means of ICTs. SAP sees its engagement as an investment in future business areas and emerging markets in the developing world. But the corporate engagement of these big international players does not have to contradict the general aims and goals of the development society. On the contrary, the development assistance sees a crucial role in engaging in public private partnerships (PPP). The OECD notes that PPPs have become a general trend throughout the global economy. Convergence and consolidation of the fast moving ICT market demand that not one organiz...

Academic Language in Second Language Learning

Language in academic settings, also referred to academic language, has gained attentionin the field of second language learning owing to new understandings of the complexitiesof language inherent in learning academic content, and new efforts to assessEnglish learners' language proficiency in the context of school learning. The conceptof academic language as distinct from social language has been in the academic literaturesince the mid-1950s, and surfaced as a major construct in the field of bilingualeducation in the 1980s. Many readers will be familiar with the ideas of BICS andCALP, first introduced by Jim Cummins in the 1980s. This book presents a critique ofacademic language as a separable construct from social language, and introduces currentresearch efforts to understand how English learners interact, interpret, and showunderstanding of language in academic contexts in ways that re-think and go beyondthe distinction between social and academic language. The book is organized into three main sections, each with a range of chapters that consider how academic language playsinto how children and youth learn academic content as emergent bilingual students in school settings. A Foreward andAfterward offer commentary on the book and its contents. The intended audience for this book is graduate students, teachereducators, and researchers interested in issues of language and content learning for English learners, the new mainstream ofschools across the nation. Torsten Kriedt Achieving Business Value in Information Security

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The beginning of the 21st century with the fear of the "Year 2000"-threat (Y2K) became a milestone for the "Information Age", a term coined for the post-industrial stage of leading countries „[…] when information and information technologies become the main strategic national resource which results in an avalanche growth of information dependence in all spheres of society and state activities.”. In organisations the awareness of the dependence on information has led to corporate initiatives to treat information as an asset, which includes various efforts for its protection. Management trends such as "knowledge management" have identified "knowledge sharing" as a new means for achieving competitive advantage, thus promoting information to be disseminated. Due to an ever closer relationship with customers, suppliers and even competitors, organisations have expanded their "information network" outside of the original boundaries. The dualism of protection of information assets on the one hand and a free flow of information has been identified to become a challenge for organisations, described as „[…] how to satisfy this need to share information without exposing the organization to undue risk.”. With the information society implying radical changes, the need to act has been accelerated by a new mindset reacting to the advent of "e-business". Information Security (InfoSec) is often mistaken to be a purely tech...
