How does one keep classic books alive for young people today and teach them that literature is instructional and delightful? How does the teacher foster a classroom environment that encourages student participation and promotes enjoyment so that teenagers learn to appreciate literary study? More specifically, how can teachers cover centuries of American literature with students who don’t appreciate why they should read material written centuries ago about people and issues that appear to be irrelevant to life today in a language that seems esoteric? The author of this series of high school teaching guides addresses these issues. How to Teach American Literature: A Practical Teaching Guide provides a detailed resource for teachers or anyone interested in an in-depth study of the subject. This second book in the series covers American literature from the Puritan era to contemporary works. Included are suggestions for cultivating a love for literature, teaching techniques, detailed analyses of each work, questions for review and test questions with suggested responses, essay topics, audiovisual aids, classroom handouts, and recommended books that enhance teaching. The author emphasizes two basic reasons for teaching literature: it is instructional and delightful. This book provides a comprehensive methodology for teaching the subject that a teacher could apply to one year’s lesson plans without further investment in time.Elizabeth McCallum Marlow has developed quality comprehensi...

Employ cognitive theory in the classroom every day Research into how we learn has opened the door for utilizing cognitive theory to facilitate better student learning. But that's easier said than done. Many books about cognitive theory introduce radical but impractical theories, failing to make the connection to the classroom. In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference—many of which can be put into practice in a single class period. These strategies are designed to bridge the chasm between primary research and the classroom environment in a way that can be implemented by any faculty in any discipline, and even integrated into pre-existing teaching techniques. Learn, for example: How does one become good at retrieving knowledge from memory? How does making predictions now help us learn in the future? How do instructors instill fixed or growth mindsets in their students? Each chapter introduces a basic concept in cognitive theory, explains when and how it should be employed, and provides firm examples of how the intervention has been or could be used in a variety of disciplines. Small teaching techniques include brief classroom or online learning activities, one-time interventions, and small modifications in course design or communication with students.

Chrysi Rapanta Argumentation Strategies in the Classroom

4427 руб.
Argumentation as a teaching and learning method in the K-12 curriculum has received increasing attention across the globe. The reason for this is simple: argumentation helps students develop necessary critical thinking skills. However, teaching this method is not as straightforward as it may appear. Placing the classroom at the centre of the investigation, this book seeks to throw light onto argumentation as a teaching practice by asking: What does it take to teach as argument? What does it mean to be ‘argumentative’ teachers? And, how can we create classroom environments that will help and encourage young people to develop their argument skills? Based on first-hand experience and extensive research, this volume guides the reader through argumentation with the focus placed on the relationship between this teaching method and effective learning and the need to investigate the role of teachers in encouraging argumentation in the classroom. Although there are a considerable number of tools and techniques that promote argumentation in the K-12 classroom, many teachers struggle to successfully implement them in the classroom. Aimed at addressing this issue, this book endeavours to instruct teachers on how to apply argumentation effectively in their day-to-day classes and to clarify argumentation as a teaching and learning strategy. As an important contribution to the field of argumentation and education, this book will be of interest to researchers, post-graduate students, and sec...

The intention of this study was to investigate what are second cycle secondary students’ favorite teaching techniques regarding learning reading comprehension in a second language inside the classroom. Another aim was to find out what was their favorite competency to practice during class hours. The best available method to pursue this study was a quantitative survey method. The questionnaire focused on different reading comprehension teaching techniques that are often used inside classrooms. Students had to position themselves in terms or enjoyment of certain teaching techniques used inside the classroom. The results of the study indicated that students understand the values of doing the majority of reading exercises proposed inside the classroom, but were sometimes experiencing some form of anxiety, laziness and resistance with some of those activities. The main conclusion is that teachers need to combine some of the students’ favorite teaching ESL reading comprehension techniques and also use some techniques that aren't enjoyed as much by students.

Teaching Again brings to life the dance of questions that vie forattention in the mind of a teacher: How do I convince students that they want tolearn to what I'm trying to teach? How do I make them understand that this isreally actually important to them? And, perhaps most important, how do I getthem to like me, and my discipline, in the process? These are the questions that allgood teachers ask themselves at the beginning, middle, and end of every singleday of their professional lives. Every moment of teaching is a human transaction, and Tom brings us right intothe middle of that transaction. He allows the reader to see and hear and feel the tension of the tightrope he haschosen to walk with these students. How does the effective teacher assess and report their classroom curriculum program?Building on the success of their previous book--- Designing the Classroom Curriculum in the Knowledge Age --- David Lynch and Richard Smith seek to answer this question by focusing their "teaching design" idea on classroom assessment and reporting. At the heart of their teaching design idea is the formulation of teaching strategies that enable all students to make the required learning gains. At its core, the book encourages the teacher to work towards becoming a different kind of teacher, a teacher who has a mindset attuned to the Knowledge Age and who embraces new knowledge sets that reflect research into effective teaching. More specifically, the book explores the theory and practice of "teaching design" from the perspective of assessment and reporting. The book examines these premises as context when assessing and reporting the classroom curriculum. A real how to assess and report book.

She shares her ministry both inside and out in hopes of encouraging others who feel "they're too far gone". Sentenced to Life, she became an influential inmate minister sharing her calling from the Lord in areas of preaching, teaching, painting and song writing. Karen shares openly how God used her to minister to hundreds of women like herself and how being off of parole, she now has a calling to reach the multitudes who are both incarcerated and free. This book is very inspirational, encouraging and very heart felt.

Classroom discourses are examined as part of a broader discursive network, which include school, district, and preservice university discourses. These discourses and the relationships among them are analyzed to determine how the interaction between them produced and sustained particular knowledge about teaching ELLs.

Must we always teach from the inside of a classroom? Do periodic exams encourage learning as well as daily quizzes do? Do you schedule individual conferences with each student at the start of the term? Is lecturing an effective way to teach? If a student falls in love with you-or vice versa-are you doing something right or something wrong? If you have a pedagogical idea that will probably fail, should you try it anyhow? How do we know when it is time to retire from a profession we love? Such questions may make readers uncomfortable, but they may also lead them to change the way they think about the profession. Teachers may reconsider their methods, causing students to reconsider their attitudes. In choosing the title Risk Teaching, Peter G. Beidler hopes to convey multiple meanings of the word "risk." "Risk" the verb, as in "take a chance on an amazing profession." "Risk" the adjective, as in "risky"-teaching that diverges from the safe and traditional path. "Risk" the noun, as in "teach students to take risks" and learn outside their comfort zones. Beidler's book, like his teaching, is saucy, innovative, and challenging.

José Bowen recognizes that technology is profoundly changing education and that if students are going to continue to pay enormous sums for campus classes, colleges will need to provide more than what can be found online and maximize «naked» face-to-face contact with faculty. Here, he illustrates how technology is most powerfully used outside the classroom, and, when used effectively, how it can ensure that students arrive to class more prepared for meaningful interaction with faculty. Bowen offers practical advice for faculty and administrators on how to engage students with new technology while restructuring classes into more active learning environments.

This book explores the notion of Crosslinguistic Influence in Language Learning: how the first language of a learner influences the learning of subsequent languages. It examines not only the phenomena in regards to the process of language learning but also investigates the implications of crosslinguistic influence for classroom teaching practices. Specifically, the book focuses on the acquisition of German by adults whose first language is English and the effect of specific English syntactic patterns on the acquisition of related structures in German. The book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in theoretical understandings of crosslinguistic influence, and shows how these understandings have influenced foreign language teachers' classroom practices over time. One teaching method is empirically tested with the results supporting an approach to foreign/second language pedagogy which accounts for crosslinguistic influence in its design.

Basically, this book focuses on how the writer learned mathematics in his school and university days, how his learning is reflected on his teaching, what experiences did he achieve from his classroom practices, what sorts of changes did he bring in his classroom, and the most important part is why is he not able to use participatory pedagogies in teaching mathematics in the classroom even though he is enriched by several student-centred teaching learning methods. This book will be useful for school teachers, students, school principals, school administrators, curriculum makers and analysts, researchers, and project executives especially in the educational sectors.
