Bruce Hills Inside Out. A Biblical and Practical Guide to Self-leadership

Inside Out: A Biblical & Practical Guide to Self-leadership by Bruce Hills. True leadership comes from the inside out, not the top down. The way we lead and influence people, in a ministry context, is not only by our words, decisions, directives or position, but also by the authenticity and example of our lives. It’s about who we are within. It’s about leading ourselves so we can effectively lead others. It’s exercising leadership in and over our own lives. This is called ‘self-leadership’. This book is about ‘self-leadership’—the intentional practice of disciplining, regulating and developing our lives and leadership so that we can effectively lead ourselves and others to fulfill God’s ultimate purposes of maturity and mission. “This book digs deep, showing that leading ourselves well is the foundation for all credible and impacting leadership. Highly recommended.” Mark Conner, Former Senior Minister, CityLife Church, Melbourne — Australia. “This book offers a comprehensive, deeply grounded yet easy to read multi-dimensional approach to leadership formation and development—a must read.” Dr Johan Roux, President, CEO of Tabor College, Adelaide — Australia. “This book does not disappoint. It is written in a way that communicates cross-culturally and to the religious or non-religious mindset. This is a very valuable read.” Mal Macleod, Director Equip Ministries International, Senior Pastor, South West Christian Church, Melbourne — Australia. “Bruce describes a Biblically ce...

Mike George Liberating Leadership. Being No One - Having Nothing - Going Nowhere

LEADING FROM INSIDE OUTWe are all leaders by virtue of one simple fact; there is always some-one watching. And when there isn't, you are!Are you leading your life, and therefore leading others, from 'out-side in' or from 'inside out'? For most it's from 'outside in'. So there is likely to be much personal stress and many difficult relationships. For a few it's from 'inside out'. They create clarity and calm, and have the ability to connect well with anyone. They are the masters of their consciousness. Liberating leadership from 'inside out', in a formal or informal context, happens when you understand: Why ending the illusion that you are going somewhere frees you from the habit of 'drifting', dissolves misplaced ambi-tions and allows you to be fully present for others, wherever you are. Why realising that it's impossible to acquire and hold on to anything or anyone is the only way to free your self from stress and the emotional suffering that sabotages your well-being and your character. Why 'being no one' is the ultimate reality of all our lives and how only that awareness can restore your authenticity and your natural abilities to influence those around you.Including 101 practical leadership 'nudges' to create your own leadership journey.Author Mike George is an author of 15 books focussed on self-awareness and personal enlightenment. THE PRACTITIONER'S GUIDE TO GOVERNANCE AS LEADERSHIP The Practitioner's Guide to Governance as Leadership offers a resource that shows how to achieve excellence and peak performance in the boardroom by putting into practice the groundbreaking model that was introduced in the book, Governance as Leadership. This proven model of effective governance explores how to attain proficiency in three governance modes or mindsets: fiduciary, strategic, and generative. Throughout the book, author Cathy Trower offers an understanding of the Governance as Leadership model through a wealth of illustrative examples of high-performing nonprofit boards. She explores the challenges of implementing governance as leadership and suggests ideas for getting started and overcoming barriers to progress. In addition, Trower provides practical guidance for optimizing the practices that will improve organizational performance including: flow (high skill and high purpose), discernment, deliberation, divergent thinking, insight, meaningfulness, consequence to the organization, and integrity. In short, the book is a combination of sophisticated thinking, instructive vignettes, illustrative documents, and practical recommendations. The book includes concrete strategies that can help improve critical thinking in the boardroom, a board's overall performance as a team, as well as information for creating a strong governance culture and understanding what is required of an effective CEO and a chairperson. To determine a board's fitness and help the members move forward, the book contains three types of assessments: board members evaluate each other; individual board member assessments; and an overall team assessment. This practitioner's guide is written for nonprofit board members, chief executives, senior staff members, and anyone who wants to reflect on governance, discern how to govern better, and achieve higher performance in the process. The Carver Policy Governance Guide series includes six booklets that offer board members a description of John Carver's Policy Governance model of board leadership. Policy Governance enables a board to fulfill its accountability to its organization's «owners,» whether the owners are association members, city residents, company shareholders, or a community of interest. Policy Governance addresses the board's engagement in financial, programmatic, and personnel matters; roles of officers and committees; reporting and evaluation; agendas; and other aspects of the board job. For boards pursuing, or wanting to pursue, the Policy Governance model, Adjacent Leadership Roles: CGO and CEO examines the leadership roles needed in the boardroom and the executive suite. This guide reveals the two important and separate functions that are key to enabling both governance and management to have the benefit of optimal leadership. The Policy Governance model is based on the functions rather than the structure of a governing board. It outlines commonsense principles about governing that fit together into an entire system. The practices of the Policy Governance board, which are consistent with the principles, allow it to control without meddling, focus on long-term organizational outputs, powerfully delegate to a CEO and staff, and discharge its fiduciary responsibility in a visionary, strategic manner. Because the model is a total system, the Carver Policy Governance Guide series offers boards a complete set of principles for fulfilling their various obligations.

Ratemo Waya Michieka Trails in Academic and Administrative Leadership in Kenya

Scholars, especially those interested in understanding how leadership has inhibited academic freedom and hindered effectiveness of institutions of higher learning have for long been engaged by the very important manner in which governance and leadership of higher education institutions in Africa is constituted and managed. The fact that there has been a dearth of work based on the experiences of those who have served as university leaders has created a major gap. Questions remain on how leaders of higher education institutions are identified, how they are prepared, the personal predispositions that individuals bring to the exercise of such positions and their personal experiences regarding what energizes or inhibits the performance of their work. Until recently, presidents in most African countries served as chancellors of public universities, identification of those who served as university leaders was largely a political process. But much has changed, with most countries establishing oversight bodies and the overall governance of higher education institutions divorced from the day-to-day political processes.Trails in Academic and Administrative Leadership in Kenya provides a personal account of the experiences in higher education leadership from an individual whose tenure in leadership straddled the two eras. In this book, Prof. Michieka provides an account of how his early education prepared him for roles in academic and institutional leadership in Kenya. The author shares...

From the bestselling authors of The Leadership Challenge and over a dozen award winning leadership books, James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner have written a new book that examines a fundamental question: How do people learn leadership? How do they learn to become leaders? Learning Leadership: The Five Fundamentals of Becoming an Exemplary Leader (ISBN: 978-1-119-14428-1; Wiley; May 2016) is a comprehensive guide to unleashing the inner-leader in us all and to building a solid foundation for a lifetime of leadership growth and mastery. The book offers a concrete framework to help individuals of all levels, functions, and backgrounds take charge of their own leadership development and become the best leaders they can be. Arguing that all individuals are born with the capacity to lead, Kouzes and Posner provide readers with a practical series of actions and specific coaching tips for harnessing that capacity and creating a context in which they can excel., Supported by over 30 years of research, from over seventy countries, and with examples from real-world leaders, Learning Leadership is a clarion call to unleash the leadership potential that is already present in today’s society. According to Kouzes and Posner, “Leadership makes a significant difference in levels of engagement and commitment and is perhaps the most important asset in every organization, yet recent research points to a shortage of leaders. It is a serious global concern. The world needs more exemplary leaders in order to promote high-performing workplaces and inspire feelings of greater self-worth and meaningfulness. The shortage, however, is not because of the lack of potential talent. The people are out there, the eagerness is out there, and the capability is out there. The shortage results from prevailing myths—myths about talent, strengths, position, self-reliance, and effort—that inhibit the vast majority of leaders from shining and organizations from realizing the full benefits of the talent they already have.” Learning Leadership provides readers with evidence-based strategies to ignite the habit of continuous improvement and the mindset of becoming the best leaders they can be. Emerging leaders, as well as leadership developers, internal and external coaches and trainers, and other human resource professionals will learn from first-hand stories and practical examples so that they can deeply understand and apply the fundamental for becoming the best leaders they can be. Learning Leadership: The Five Fundamentals of Becoming an Exemplary Leader is divided into digestible bite-sized chapters that encourage daily actions to becoming a better leader. Key takeaways from the book include: Believe in Yourself. Believing in oneself is the essential first step in developing leadership competencies. The best leaders are learners, and they can’t achieve mastery until and unless they truly decide that inside them there is a person who can make and difference and learn to be a better leader than they are right now. Aspire to Excel. To become an exemplary leader, people have to determine what they care most about and why they want to lead. Leaders with values-based motivations are the most likely to excel. They also must have a clear image of the kind of leader they want to be in the future—and the legacy they want to leave for others. Challenge Yourself. Challenging oneself is critical to learning leadership. Leaders have to seek new experiences and test themselves. There will be inevitable setbacks and failures along the way that require curiosity, grit, courage, and resilience in order to persist in learning and becoming the best. Engage Support.

I felt safe inside it, and although I wanted to get out, my nerves and anxiety sent me into panic, and I would retreat back inside for my own safety.’‘My mind was a battlefield of negative thoughts, which were mainly directed at myself, and God wanted me to think positively about my body and looks and to stop this self-destructive thinking, which led me to self-destructive behaviour’.

Melissa Mahan The DELTA Model of Personal Leadership

Leadership experts posit many opinions about leadership, but few address personal leadership. Personal leadership starts with a personal relationship with yourself. An in-depth look at who you are inside and the mechanics of your emotions. Many adult learners find themselves fighting a battle within themselves, a struggle of self understanding and the desire to have the courage to explore it. Many universities have leadership development programs for adult learners. However, few address personal leadership or the philosophy of moral courage. Moral courage is a philosophical and psychological foundation of personal leadership and is the core foundation that Diverse Educational Leadership Training Academy (DELTA) uses to teach personal leadership. This book provides an overview of the critical perceptions of DELTA graduates and the five characteristics of personal leadership as reveled by the DELTA graduates.

A comprehensive guide to planning for CEO succession, from the experts at RHR As the demands from stakeholders for consummate leadership and good governance from a company's board of directors, its CEO, and its executive team increase, how the process of CEO succession is carried out has become more critical than ever before. Yet, over the past several years, a growing number of CEOs have failed early in their terms, often with devastating consequences to their companies and stockholders. By far the most common problem is a lack of ownership of the CEO succession process. Inside CEO Succession provides businesses, leaders, and boards with the strategies they need to execute their responsibilities with a heightened level of professionalism and ensure the sustained success of the companies they serve. Written by Dr. Thomas J. Saporito, CEO of RHR International, and Dr. Paul Winum, Senior Partner of RHR International, the lessons of Inside CEO Succession are rooted in RHR's long-standing history of bringing expert knowledge, experience, advice, and counsel to the issues related to CEO succession. The culmination of RHR's 65 years of experience providing expert counsel to the boards of directors of hundreds of companies, it explains how ego, role-relationships, power, and human dynamics associated with relinquishing leadership, preparing successors, and ceding power and authority to other people create undetected problems in the succession process and ultimately cause many CEOs to fail early in their tenures. Distills RHR's 65 years of experience helping businesses deal with CEO succession into one practical resource Presents strategies to enable boards to understand their role in succession planning and how to source leadership that best fits their organization's culture and requirements Brings together business acumen and psychological insight to help readers better prepare for more effective CEO succession To be successful, CEO succession requires a well-defined course of action that ensures that a number of highly capable candidates are ready to assume the chief executive position whether through an unexpected event or a planned transition. Inside CEO Succession is designed to help boards comprehensively manage that process and effectively sustain their company's profitability.

Oseloka H. Obaze Prime Witness. Change and Policy Challenges in Buhari.s Nigeria

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

Sean Miller Leadership from a Scientific and Practical Perspective

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of applied sciences, Cologne, course: Soft Skills & Leadership, language: English, abstract: In the scientific debate on business management topics, the relevance of leadership for corporate success is a central object of research. In this field, science has a long history and began its research in the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, scientists have promoted the understanding of leadership processes to a significant degree and further on have tried to stimulate companies to rethink management practices. During this period, several approaches have emerged - ranging from structure-functionalistic and personality-related to behavioral-scientific and transactional dispositions. Regardless of which perspective, in a number of studies leadership is expressed as having a great impact on corporate success. The majority of companies knows how important good leadership is - it holds it all together and is a make or break function - and every stakeholder fears the negative effects of management organizations that lack effective managers. Companies are in serious trouble if they are not able to develop promising young professionals or recruit competent managers. Rarely is it the case that companies underestimate the significance of a good leadership culture within their personnel policy.Unfortunately, even top managers with impressive track...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, Munich University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The need for efficient leadership exists since business activities started. Leaders that do not use their potential and do not inspire their employees are facing enormous problems, especially in times of crisis. According Blake and Mouton (Blake R. M., 1964), efficient leadership is defined by a focus on production and the belongings of the staff. In other words, an efficient leader shows concern for both dimensions. Blake and Mouton developed a method to evaluate and to improve leadership capabilities, in order to increase the efficiency of a leader. Consequently, efficient leadership is closely linked to the overall performance of the company. The managerial grid model that is based on the behavioral leadership theory can be used as a tool for the improvement of leadership capabilities. The model is applied according a provided process that begins with the self assessment of the leader and ends with concrete suggestions for improvements. The model provides a favorable leadership style, the team leader style. This style is characterized by a concentration on both dimensions of concern, people and production. The Carver Policy Governance® Guide series includes six booklets that offer board members a description of John Carver's Policy Governance model of board leadership. Ends and the Ownership helps boards distinguish between what an organization is for and what it does (ends versus means)—a basic feature of the innovative Policy Governance model. This important guide also discusses the concept of ownership and includes sample policies that can help board members effectively prioritize and govern.

Academic Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, , language: English, abstract: The significance of good governance in ensuring effective tax administration in the public sector and enhancing tax collection is an undeniable fact that is generally accepted. In terms of scope, the study focuses on the assessment and collection of taxes from category "C" taxpayers in selected sub-city branches of the ERCA. Evaluating CEO and Board Performance offers board members information on the importance of evaluation as part of a greater systematic view of governance. The guide includes principles for effectively and honestly evaluating CEO and board performance.

Dr. Whitney Stevens Emotional Intelligence As a leadership Strategy to Make Leaders Great

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Phoenix, language: English, abstract: Twenty successful leaders in the United States participated in the study to explore the extent to which emotional intelligence supports leadership potential and success. Competent managers with strong leadership skills are scarce (Cafolla, 2008). According to Goleman (2001), EQ might predict up to 90% of the variance in leadership effectiveness by uncovering strong positive effects of leadership commitment and effectiveness that support strong influences on leadership effectiveness. This modified Delphi study extended research on the emotional intelligence competencies to explore future possibilities of improving leadership success at mid- to high-level management tiers. The results of this study provide evidence to support emotional intelligence and leadership potential, validating the need for EQ as a leadership strategy. The Delphi study results recommended training to increase EQ in leaders and asserted that leaders with high levels of EQ are likely to improve overall organizational results, reduce turnover, reduce fraud and low performance, improve moral, and make organizations a better place to work.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Soft Skills & Leadership Qualities, language: English, abstract: Today, in a fast changing business environment, leaders need to manage an empowered workforce and go more and more beyond consultative, cooperative and democratic leadership styles. The today's workforce does not accept an autocratic leadership style as they have now far more options and choices. In addition, there is a growing sense of democracy and independence in the workforce.Emotional Intelligence has become a vital and more and more important part of how today's leaders meet the significant challenges they face. Emotion is known to alter thinking in many ways. It seems that Emotional Intelligence can help leaders in an evermore difficult leadership role, one that fewer and fewer leaders seem capable of fulfilling. And especially in the highest levels in organizations Emotional Intelligence can give developing leaders a competitive edge. The bottom line is that the manager who can think about emotions accurately and clearly may often be better able to anticipate, cope with, and effectively manage change. But provides the concept of Emotional Intelligence the answer to the question what the best leader differentiates from the average one?The following assignment aims at clarifying the role of emotional intelligen...
