Odey Robert The Imperative of Promoting, Developing and Sustaining Indigenous Music in Nigeria

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, Ebonyi State University (New Frontier Ind. Research and Publications Int'l, Makurdi, Benue, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: Until very recently, Nigerian indigenous music was silenced by its Western counterpart, following westernisation, globalisation and attrition. Music is cultural. And all Nigerian cultures have their respective music. Despite the recent promotion, development and sustenance bids of several artists, scholars and concerned authorities, the teeming Nigerian masses are yet to be roused towards and properly educated, sensitised and re-oriented on and towards indigenous music. It is against the above backdrop that this study has emerged to call for a change in these regards. The paper maintains that it is imperative to properly, constantly and adequately promote, develop and sustain our indigenous music so as to project our indigenous music, create a place for it in the globalised Western hostile village, and allow for culture continuity and national development. Music unites people(s) and allows for the showcasing of cultural identity, ethos and aesthetics. Therefore, to duly tap from the potentials/prospects of indigenous music, it is imperative to incessantly promote, develop and sustain indigenous music in Nigeria and beyond. This study is anchored on music and indigenous wholistic theories that are most suitable for it, following its nature and pursuit. It relied o...

This is strictly an examination of the effect of non-oil export on economic growth of Nigeria. The basic aim is to examine the trend and composition of the non-oil export in Nigeria and investigate the extent of the contribution of non-oil export sector to the Nigerian economy. The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. Thus, it is pertinent in this study to discuss the causes and consequences of the neglect of the non-oil export in detail as well as trend examined since 1970 in order to note its growth.

Sources of economic growth have variously been empirically analyzed. Traditionally, explanation of growth considered physical capital factors and then effective labour. In the past, much of the planning in Nigeria was centered on the accumulation of physical capital without recognition of the important role played, by human capital on rapid growth and development process. This informed the researcher to see how human capital accumulation affects growth in Nigeria. Answer was also sought to whether (or not) the level of education attainment significantly determine rate of economic growth. A number of estimation procedures were carried out. The data series were tested for stationarity using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test as the starting point to assess the order of integration with the aid of econometric views (E-view version 3.1) and two multiple regression models were estimated using ordinary least square method. Based on the findings of this study, physical capital, labour force and human capital were significant factors determine growth in Nigeria over time.

This has heralded a difficult relationship between several indigenous peoples and multinational oil corporations in different countries. Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: M.Phil/PhD, University of Ibadan, course: Economis, language: English, abstract: This study examined the relationship between tax structure and economic growth in Nigeria using annual data between 1970 to 2007. The motivation is to track the impact of the observed change in the tax structure on economic growth in order to inform policy. Two tax structures namely pre Value Added Tax (VAT) and post VAT were identified and their impacts evaluated. The empirical analysis was anchored on the endogenous growth theoretical framework which allowed for linking tax structures to growth. Econometric models were then developed to explore the relationship between the identified tax structures and economic growth. The first model present a growth equation with average tax rate variable, while the second model is where the specific tax variables were included alongside variables in the first model. The third, fourth and fifth models were used to test the robustness of the second model. This was accomplished basically by introducing additional variables. Prior to the empirical estimations, the standard tests of unit root and co-integration analysis were conducted to ascertain the appropriate estimation procedure and technique(s) to use. The unit root test show that all the variables of the models are stationary at the first difference, while the co-integration analysis indicates that one model ...

It argues that African Pentecostals particularly are an integral part of the global expansion of Christianity in this century. Specifically, this book engages the history and growth of the Church of Pentecost, an African Pentecostal denomination from Ghana, to demonstrate how African Pentecostals have taken their spirituality into their own hands and planted churches in their home country, as well as other parts of the globe. The focus of this book is that African Pentecostals have achieved this feat through the experiential power and reliance of the Holy Spirit and the indigenous factor. The specific highlight is that this book is an updated analysis of the history, growth, and missions of the Church of Pentecost. Gloria Elizabeth Chacón Indigenous Cosmolectics. Kab.awil and the Making of Maya and Zapotec Literatures

Latin America's Indigenous writers have long labored under the limits of colonialism, but in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, they have constructed a literary corpus that moves them beyond those parameters. Gloria E. Chacon considers the growing number of contemporary Indigenous writers who turn to Maya and Zapotec languages alongside Spanish translations of their work to challenge the tyranny of monolingualism and cultural homogeneity. Chacon argues that these Maya and Zapotec authors reconstruct an Indigenous literary tradition rooted in an Indigenous cosmolectics, a philosophy originally grounded in pre-Columbian sacred conceptions of the cosmos, time, and place, and now expressed in creative writings. More specifically, she attends to Maya and Zapotec literary and cultural forms by theorizing kab'awil as an Indigenous philosophy. Tackling the political and literary implications of this work, Chacon argues that Indigenous writers' use of familiar genres alongside Indigenous language, use of oral traditions, and new representations of selfhood and nation all create space for expressions of cultural and political autonomy. Chacon recognizes that Indigenous writers draw from universal literary strategies but nevertheless argues that this literature is a vital center for reflecting on Indigenous ways of knowing and is a key artistic expression of decolonization.

Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-à-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development.

It has been significantly concluded that, the impetus behind the city sustainability is primarily the indigenous knowledge and sometimes this knowledge is overwhelming to even the modern scientific aspects too. Indigenous technology of water management in the historic city of Bhaktapur has been also found to be significant not only in terms of supply rather in terms of quality of water too. The reusability of water resources has given an excellent paradigm even to the modern approaches too. The lifestyle in terms of culture and religion has been associated with water for this city, and water management is also facilitated through cultural practices and religious establishments. A city regarded as 'City of Devotees' has disseminated a remarkable approach for the water management by keeping aside the modern scientific approaches. The city was established in the 13th century and practices are continuously adopted since then as indigenous practices through unrelenting trial and error, the indigenous technology of water management has been found to be rational hence revitalization of some components might be more energy efficient and economic for present day water scarcity solution in the city

In some areas the ancestral musical culture is still transmitted across the generations; in others it is partially remembered, and being revitalised with the assistance of heritage recordings and written documentation; but in many parts of Australia, the transmission of songs has been interrupted, and in those places revitalisation relies on research and restoration. This book provides helpful insights for Indigenous people and communities, researchers and educators and anyone interested in song and Indigenous Australia.

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

The authors start from the nineties and problematize the relationship between Indigenous People and nation-state in Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, and Brazil. It is one of the book's suggestions that current indigenous movements and their demands can be best understood through a critique of textual production of its organic intellectuals. While much has been written about the activities of the social movements and current indigenous textual production, there is still the need for a book that contextualizes what has enabled the emergence of a contemporary indigenous literary canon and its relationship to those social movements. This book aims to fill some of these gaps.

Kingsley Mua Kelly Roadmap of African Countries in Tackling Corruption Practices

This book is drawn from my PhD dissertation in forensic accounting. The dissertation deals with fraud and corruption in Cameroon and Nigeria. Fraud and corruption have eaten deep into the fabric of most economies with grievous effects that have limited the growth and infrastructural development of many nations and led many firms to the road of bankruptcy. Fraud is rarely seen but the symptoms of fraud are usually observed. The book is based on a comparative study aiming to determine the level of fraud and corrupt practices in Nigeria and Cameroon, and how to curb this menace. Since this study intends to compare fraud and corruption (FAC) practices in the public sector in these two countries, the broken trust theory was preferred because it provides a framework to uncover the determinants of possible motivations behind FAC practices in the public sector of an economy. To achieve this, an empirical study was conducted in Nigeria and Cameroon. The findings of this study research apply to the majority of African countries, and the book provides a roadmap for an effective and efficient way of fighting fraud and corruption in the African continent.

Foreign influence apparently made many people to despise African cultures in general, hence the need to prove that African indigenous knowledge, as is seen in Shona indigenous games, is useful. Some indigenous knowledge has continued to exist in its original form while some has vanished or changed with time. There are several clusters of knowledge that can either be scientific, modern or indigenous. Indigenous knowledge refers to local knowledge existing within and developed around the specific conditions of individuals, indigenous to a particular geographical location and passed on to the next generation through oral tradition. The first section of the book deals with indigenous knowledge and a general overview of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The second, third and fourth sections of this book deal with the nature and structure of African games and their contribution towards child development. Selected Shona traditional musical and non musical games are presented for analysis.

Tatiana Bulgakova Nanai Shamanic Culture in Indigenous Discourse

This book on Nanai shamanic culture is based on first-hand information provided by shamans and recorded in the years between 1980 and 2012, a time of rapid socio-cultural change in Russia. It sheds light on the lively indigenous discourse in which social factors such as the splitting of society into different paternal lineages relates to spiritual troubles that Nanai people experience as collective 'shamanic disease.' But inter-clan confrontations are not only mediated in shamanic rituals, as these must not be separated from folk narratives, dances and other forms of art. Furthermore, the book provides profound insights into the plurality of contradictory discourses on indigenous knowledge as well as those delivered in non-indigenous contexts. The latter arose or became more intense in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and often led to experiments in new shamanic practices.

Marlene Bleicher Can Endogenous Growth Theories Explain Growth in South Tyrol and Luxembourg.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 1,0, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Faculty of Economics & Management), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes the two economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg, questioning whether their economic growth can be explained by concepts of endogenous growth theories.South Tyrol and Luxembourg are two quite similar economies in terms of size, population, cultural diversity and scarcity of natural resources, but yet very different in matters of economic growth, income per capita and economic specialization, which makes them an interesting sample to test for growth factors. Since endogenous growth theories, in contrast to neoclassical conceptions, provide a much broader range of tools to handle endogenous technological change, innovation and other factors, they are better suited to analyze growth factors. Therefore, this thesis first draws a summary on the evolution of endogenous growth theories including an outline of the most important contributions. It is shown that the factor "human capital" plays a major role in most models. Subsequently, the second part of the thesis deals with the economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg in detail, evaluates historical economic growth, identifies tourism and financial intermediation as their main driving forces and asks whether human capital could be the moving power behind them. The method of choice for measuring is the co...

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 3.67, , course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: The study examined the impact of government fiscal and monetary policies on economic growth within the period of 33 years (1981-2014). Time series data were derived from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, while the method of analysis was the Johansen Cointegration test, vector error correction method and the Wald test of coefficient. The result of the findings showed that there is a significant relationship between explanatory variables (government expenditure, interest rate and money supply) taken jointly and the dependent variable (real gross domestic product) in the long run. The coefficient of error correction term is -0.02 showing a 2% yearly adjustment towards the long run equilibrium. This proves that there is a relationship between the dependent variable- real gross domestic product and the independent variables - government expenditure, money supply and interest rate in the long run. The estimated coefficients of the short run model indicate no significant relationship between the dependent variable real gross domestic product and independent variables government expenditure, money supply and interest rates taken together but individually a short run relationship exist between the fiscal variable (government expenditure) and real GDP and between the monetary variable (money supply and interest rate) and rea...

Before analysing the relationship between two economic phenomena in detail, an overview of some of the most prominent empirical empirical studies concerning the relationship between openness to international trade and economic growth in general is provided. As most of them seem to have reached the conclusion that trade influences growth in a positive way, the question for the reasons of this presumably positive relationship arises. Factors which cause or influence economic growth in general as well as various channels through which trade might have an influence on growth are presented in the third and forth section. The importance of various sources of economic and the Solow-Model and the AK-Model are introduced in order to distinguish between long-run and short-run effects of capital accumulation, learning by doing and R&D on economic growth. The remaining analysis concentrates on one channel in particular, namely on howtrade determines a country's import and export structure. The importance of therange of products a country produces is enormous and affects economic growth and welfare. The fifth section introduces the st...

Working with principles from the fields of evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo), this fascinating work offers a new approach to analyzing child growth and development, examining each stage and transition in detail, from fetal development to preadulthood. Based on the author's in-depth review of the current literature and his own observations as a pediatric endocrinologist, the book demonstrates how the transitions between human life history phases represent unique periods of evolutionary adaptive response to the environment. In addition, the author explains why an understanding of these transition periods enables us to better understand the sequence and mechanisms of child growth as well as to better diagnose child growth disorders. Logically organized and clearly written, Evo-Devo of Child Growth: Sets a solid foundation of principles such as evolutionary thinking in medicine and child growth, life history theory, and heterochrony and allometry Examines the relationship between child growth and the theory of life history Applies evo-devo theory to fetal growth, infancy, childhood, juvenility, adolescence, and preadulthood Explores the trade-offs and adaptive phenotypic plasticity during transition periods Explains the role of life history theory in understanding and diagnosing growth disorders such as Down syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Silver-Russell syndrome In addition to the author's own analysis and observations, this book also features notes from leading clinicians and evolutionary biologists, offering additional perspectives on the relationship between evo-devo and child growth and development. Evo-Devo of Child Growth provides a new perspective for evolutionary biologists to understand the phases and transitions of child growth. Moreover, it offers a new approach to help clinicians to better understand and diagnose a broad range of child growth disorders.

Chudi Offodile The Politics of Biafra. And the Future of Nigeria

The Politics of Biafra is a reflection on the importance of history in addressing present realities and the future co-existence of Nigeria's multi ethnic society. It analyzes the ideological struggles and conflict in Biafra during the war with Nigeria from 1967-1970, the impact of the war and the relevance of those struggles to the current agitations for a new state of Biafra. In this historical and analytical work, the author observes that nearly fifty years after the end of the Nigeria-Biafra war in 1970, Nigeria remains confronted with the Biafra dilemma. No matter its pretensions, Nigeria will at some point have to reform its present pseudo federal arrangement to create a more inclusive, equitable and proper federal structure. If not, the country will continue to face epileptic developmental thrusts, militancy in the Niger Delta and a ruinous intensifying clamor for self-determination by disadvantaged ethnic groups, especially the Igbo.Appendix - Three part essay by Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

Rebecca Overmyer-Velazquez Folkloric Poverty. Neoliberal Multiculturalism in Mexico

The "technocratic revolution" that ushered in the age of neoliberalism in Mexico under the presidency of Carlos Salinas (1988-1994) helped create the conditions for, and the constraints on, a resurgence of activism among the indigenous communities of Mexico. This resurgence was given further impetus by the protests in 1992 against the official celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of Columbus's landing in America and by the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas in 1994. Local, regional, and national indigenous organizations formed to pursue a variety of causes-cultural, economic, legal, political, and social-to benefit Indian peoples in all regions of the country. Folkloric Poverty analyzes the crisis these indigenous political groups faced in Mexico at the turn of the twenty-first century. It tells the story of an indigenous peoples' movement in the state of Guerrero, the Consejo Guerrerense 500 Años de Resistencia Indígena, that gained unprecedented national and international prominence in the 1990s and yet was defunct by 2002. The fate of the Consejo points to the ways that Mexican multiculturalism‚ indigenismo, combined with neoliberal reforms to keep Indians in a political quarantine, effectively limiting their actions and safely isolating their demands on the state.

There has been long felt need for professional book written by an international author on energy demand. It is gratifying to note that this book will immensely contribute to the growth and development of various energy resources required to meet the energy demand of developing nations like Nigeria and other nations of the World. Energy planners, researchers, lecturers and students of higher institution are undoubtedly aware of the gap in information on energy demand in developing and third world countries. It is therefore the purpose of this book to provide the needed link. The book investigated energy policy short falls, their relevance to socio-economic development, probable energy demand and efficient use in developing Nations such as Nigeria. Each chapter of the book is quite revealing and incisive. With all these as a base, the book forecast energy requirement and used it to estimate the energy demand of Nigeria in the year 2022. The forging and many others formed the crucial viewpoint written in this edition. I therefore recommended the book to Energy planners, Researchers and more especially to students, academicians, policy makers and the general public at large.

This study investigates the nexus between public spending and economic growth in Ethiopia (1971-2010) using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model or Bound Testing Approach. In order to determine the direction of causality between public spending and economic growth, Toda and Yamamato (1995) augmented Granger causality test is used. The outcome of the study revealed that, the growth impact of government consumption expenditure in Ethiopia during the study period was negative and significant. However, that of investment spending was positive and significant both in the short run and in the long run, showing the relevance of public physical investment activities to the economy. The test of causality, however, indicated that there was a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to aggregate public spending.

The major objective of the study was to determine the impact of migration on the Nigeria labour market. In a country where jobs opportunities are lacking, unattractiveness of agricultural sector of the economy, industrialization is yet to take its full course, high level of institutional corruption and human rights abuses, religious and ethic conflicts, high population growth, wide gap of inequality, majority of the population is living below poverty line etc. Both Internal and International migration are necessary as they help in reducing the pressure on the Nigeria labour market, but movement of highly skilled workers in large numbers have resulted in a 'brain drain' in the country. While the remittances help to redistribute resources and alleviate poverty within the regions. Skills and experienced acquired from the receiving areas can be transferred home either in temporally basis or permanently when migrants visit or return home. These put together will enhanced the socio-economic development and reduce its imbalances in the country.

Dan Agbese Ibrahim Babangida. The Military, Power and Politics

To borrow a hackneyed phrase, Nigeria has had a chequered political history before and since independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. Two sets of actors - the civilian politicians and the military politicians - have been on the national political stage since January 15, 1966. General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida was one of them. In his eight years in power as president, or perhaps more correctly as military president, he affected the course of Nigeria's events, for better or for worse, in a way that few, if any, before him did. It is not possible to tell Nigeria's story without Babangida's part in it. The book is the story of IBB, the little orphan from Minna, Niger State and his meticulous rise to the top of his profession and the leadership of his country. Perhaps, more importantly, it is the story of Nigeria, its post-independence politics and power, told from the perspective of the actions and decisions of one of the main actors on the country's political stage. The events that shaped the Babangida era did not begin on August 27, 1985, the day he staged a palace coup against General Muhammadu Buhari. They began long before that. This book is the definitive story of the military, politics and power in Nigeria.
