Leopold Bellak, Leonard Small Emergency Psychotherapy and Brief Psychotherapy

This example of applied psychoanalysis and contribution to community mental health will instruct many psychoanalysts engaged in training psychiatric residents in hospitals, clinics, and social agencies. It will prove frustrating to those seeking magical answers to the complex reality problems and intrapsychic conflicts of typical clinic patients. The authors make it clear that effective brief psychotherapy cannot be accomplished by briefly trained therapists. Most of the experience forming the clinical core of the volume was obtained at the 'trouble-shooting clinic' of the Elmhurst City Hospital developed by Bellak and his co-workers.Издательство: Grune & Stratton

Successful management of patients with treatment-resistant depression is going to require a thorough understanding of the biological basis for both the depression and its failure to respond to standard treatments. This book clearly and succinctly summarizes the latest scientific research and its applications in clinical practice. A first step is a clear definition of what constitutes treatment-resistant depression so that clinical trials and other studies are using common criteria, enabling comparison and meta-analysis of their outcomes. The opening chapter reviews definitions and predictors of originating from different fields and discusses their usefulness in clinical practice and clinical research. The next chapter proposes a new definition, adapting terminology from medicine. Biological classification requires identification of genetic risk factors: with gene variants accounting for 50% of the variance in the clinical outcomes of antidepressant treatments this is clearly a fruitful area of research. Chapter 3 describes several genes already associated with treatment-resistant depression and, while further work is needed to translate findings into clinical recommendations, predicts that genetic prediction of TRD could became a widespread clinical reality within a few years. Most patients with TRD will be treated pharmacologically and three chapters review the latest evidence for pharmacological best practice, including switching strategies for antidepressants, the role of antipsychotics and augmentation strategies to complement lithium. There are two major alternatives to pharmacotherapy: neuromodulation and psychotherapy. The brain intervention chapter summarizes clinical research and experience with electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation and magnetic seizure therapy. The final chapter reviews the literature pertaining to the effectiveness of various forms of psychotherapy in patients who have not responded to antidepressant pharmacotherapy, revealing that patients who have not responded to one or two trials of antidepressant medication have a 30%-50% chance of responding to a focused psychotherapy. It proposes indications for psychotherapy in TRD and summarizes general therapeutic principles.

How do the good become great? Practice! From musicians and executives to physicians and drivers, aspiring professionals rely on deliberate practice to attain expertise. Recently, researchers have explored how psychotherapists can use the same processes to enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy supervision for career-long professional development. Based on this empirical research, this edited volume brings together leading supervisors and researchers to explore a model for supervision based on behavioral rehearsal with continuous corrective feedback. Demonstrating how this model complements and enhances a traditional, theory-based approach, the authors explore practical methods that readers can use to improve the effectiveness of their own psychotherapy training and supervision.

Ludmila Naumova NP=P? Algorithms for solving NP-problems by matrix method in Scilab program

We know the problems of combinatorics, such as the problem of permutations, combinations, placement, represented by the corresponding formulas. But these formulas only give us the number of solutions, not the solutions themselves. There were no common standard algorithms for solving these types of problems. These types of problems with large numbers can be referred to NP problems. But with the help of Scilab program typical algorithms of such problems are revealed and solutions are given.

Despite the centrality of psychodynamic formulation to our work with patients, few students are taught how to construct them in a clear systematic way. This book offers students and practitioners from all fields of mental health a clear, practical, operationalized method for constructing psychodynamic formulations, with an emphasis on the following steps: DESCRIBING problems and patterns REVIEWING the developmental history LINKING problems and patterns to history using organizing ideas about development. The unique, up-to-date perspective of this book integrates psychodynamic theories with ideas about the role of genetics, trauma, and early cognitive and emotional difficulties on development to help clinicians develop effective formulations. Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers people a chance to create new ways of thinking and behaving in order to improve the quality of their lives. This book offers a practical, step-by-step guide to the technique of psychodynamic psychotherapy, with instruction on listening, reflecting, and intervening. It will systematically take the reader from evaluation to termination using straightforward language and carefully annotated examples. Written by experienced educators and based on a tried and tested syllabus, this book provides clinically relevant and accessible aspects of theories of treatment processes. The workbook style exercises in this book allow readers to practice what they learn in each section and more “actively” learn as they read the book. This book will teach you: About psychodynamic psychotherapy and some of the ways it is hypothesized to work How to evaluate patients for psychodynamic psychotherapy, including assessment of ego function and defenses The essentials for beginning the treatment, including fostering the therapeutic alliance, setting the frame, and setting goals A systematic way for listening to patients, reflecting on what you've heard, and making choices about how and what to say How to apply the Listen/Reflect/Intervene method to the essential elements of psychodynamic technique How these techniques are used to address problems with self esteem, relationships with others, characteristic ways of adapting, and other ego functions Ways in which technique shifts over time This book presents complex concepts in a clear way that will be approachable for all readers. It is an invaluable guide for psychiatry residents, psychology students, and social work students, but also offers practicing clinicians in these areas a new way to think about psychodynamic psychotherapy. The practical approach and guided exercises make this an exceptional tool for psychotherapy educators teaching all levels of learners. This book includes a companion website: www.wiley.com/go/cabaniss/psychotherapy with the «Listening Exercise» for Chapter 16 (Learning to Listen). This is a short recording that will help the reader to learn about different ways we listen. Praise for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Clinical Manual «This book has a more practical, hands-on, active learning approach than existing books on psychodynamic therapy.» Bob Bornstein, co-editor of Principles of Psychotherapy; Adelphi University, NY «Well-written, concise and crystal clear for any clinician who wishes to understand and practice psychodynamic psychotherapy. Full of real-world clinical vignettes, jargon-free and useful in understanding how to assess, introduce and begin psychotherapy with a patient. Extraordinarily practical with numerous examples of how to listen to and talk with patients while retaining a sophistication about the complexity of the therapeutic interaction. My trainees have said that this book finally allowed them to understand what psychodynamic psychotherapy is all about!» —Debra Katz, Vice Chair for Education at the University of Kentucky and Director of Psychiatry Residency Training «This volume offers a comprehensive learning guide for psychodynamic psychotherapy training.» —Robert Glick, Professor, Columbia University
