The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

Nils Horch Management Control of Global Supply Chains

Within global and rapidly changing environments, cooperation and networking offer possibilities for sharing costs and risks, as well as keeping up with constantly renewed information from outside the firms' boundaries. In line with this, an effective management control of supply chain processes seems to be relevant to compete against other supply chains and to get the required information. In this context, an implementation of a management control institution for inter-firm relations, like a supply chain management control (SCMC), that provides relevant qualitative and quantitative data to manage supply chains reflects an important issue. However, a comprehensive approach with regard to the management control of the entire supply chain and how it can be fulfilled has received scant attention in prior research. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyze management control systems in global supply chains by means of a mixed methods design with special regard to functional, institutional and instrumental issues. In this context, qualitative data are combined with theoretical insights to develop an empirical model which is tested by means of a quantitative study. Following this, insights into management control aspects, organization of the supply chain management control, management control mechanisms, and the integration of suppliers are provided.

Georg Baltes New Perspectives on Supply and Distribution Chain Financing. Case Studies from China and Europe

Globalization no longer means simply finding low-cost countries for sourcing, but has involved to include the opportunity for growth in Asia's emerging domestic markets, specifically China. This development results in extended, truly global supply chains and thus places a higher pressure on working capital. Therefore, several definitions of Supply Chain Management already encompass financial aspects and demand a more integrated consideration of material, information, and financial flows within supply chains. However, more precise theory on "Supply Chain Financing" is understudied and initial implementation of related solutions in industry has only gained momentum during and after the economic and financial crises of 2008 and 2009.In contrast to traditional financial instruments for supply chains - for instance trade finance products which have been around for more than a century - Supply Chain Financing leverages larger and influential members of supply chains. These firms might, for instance, provide easier and cheaper access to financing for smaller supply chain members supporting their profitability through renegotiated and reduced purchasing prices. Echoing recent research results on supply chain risk management, other firms may prefer to take on a supply chain perspective and work on creating agile and resilient supply chains. In this context, Supply Chain Financing can be employed to ensure liquidity for crucial upstream and downstream supply chain partners ...

Social Movements in Global Politics is a timely new account of the unconventional, ‘extra-institutional’ activities of social movements. In the face of impending global crises and stubborn conflicts, a conventional view of politics risks leaving us confused and fatalistic, feeling powerless because we are unaware of all that can be achieved by political means. By contrast, a variety of recent social movements, ranging from those of women, gays and lesbians and anti-racists, to environmentalists, the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, demonstrate the enormous potential of political action beyond the institutional sphere of politics. At the same time, religious fundamentalists, racial supremacists and ultra-nationalists make clear that movements are not necessarily progressive and are often at odds with one another. West highlights the many ways in which national and global institutions depend on a broader context of extra-institutional action or what is, in effect, the formative dimension of politics. He explores some of the major contributions of social movements: from the genealogy of liberal democratic nation-states, sixties’ radicalism and the ‘new social movements’ to the politics of sexuality, gender and identity, the politicization of nature and climate, and alter-globalization. The book also considers current theoretical approaches and sets out the basis for a critical theory of social movements. This is a fresh and original account of social movements in politics and will be essential reading for any students and scholars interested in the challenges and the unpredictable potential of political action.

Matt Shatzkin Understanding the Complexity of Emergency Supply Chains

While conventional commercial supply chains may be complicated, emergency supply chains are inherently complex. In responding to an emergency, they lack a developed forecast, primarily use manual requisitioning systems, and do not possess sophisticated means to sense and respond to the rapidly emerging and changing demand. Multiple stakeholders come together, many for the first time, to execute "on the fly." Their success is mostly defined by effectiveness, in either preserving combat capability or providing relief; the primary focus becomes getting the job accomplished "at all costs." As a result, supply chain efficiency is an afterthought, and optimization is difficult, if not undesired. This book completes the education of both practitioners and academics across multiple domains and disciplines. It contributes to military and nongovernmental operators, logisticians, and organizations' understanding of emergency supply chain strengths and vulnerabilities. Similarly, emergency management professionals will gain a sense of how these supply chains accomplish, limit, or constrain the emergency management process. Undergraduates and other supply chain professionals seeking a deeper understanding of supply chains will also benefit, as the book explores circumstances that run contrary to supply chain theory and thus reinforces a solid grasp on supply chain fundamentals.

Konstantin Veidenheimer Carbon dioxide emissions of the container transport from Far East into the European hinterland through Jade-Weser-Port compared to other European deepwater ports

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, course: BWL - Logistik, Verkehr, Transport und Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: This dissertation investigates carbon dioxide emissions of maritime container transport from Asia into the European hinterland through the emerging German Jade-Weser-Port (JWP) compared to the deepwater ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Trieste. Furthermore the deepwater ports are compared on the basis of competitive factors such as hinterland connectivity. The thesis also addresses CO2 reduction measures for the maritime door-to-door container transport. Maritime container transport accounts for approximately 90 percent of global trade volumes. Largest container vessels represent challenges for container ports, such as the required draft of 15.5 meters. In order to be competitive, many ports try to integrate in global supply chains. Furthermore, environmental issues play a growing role in the maritime business. Thus, the dissertation concentrates on CO2 emissions from maritime supply chains. Carbon emissions are calculated by applying activity-based approach for road emissions and energy-based method for ship emissions. The online carbon auditing tool "Ecotransit" is used for carbon auditing of rail and inland waterway emissions. For ports an average value of 17.5 kg CO2/TEU is assumed. The main findings are that...

William R. Killingsworth Design, Analysis and Optimization of Supply Chains. A System Dynamics Approach

If you're an executive dealing with extended supply chains, you live with stressand worry. Almost everything made today is manufactured by large networksof companies. Hundreds, if not thousands, of companies provide components, subassemblies, and major assemblies to a final manufacturer or integrator. These large distributed supply chains have created problems and headachesfor many industries. This book can help you prevent lost sales due to inventory shortages, highcosts due to large inventories, work stoppage due to loss of a key supplier, andsupply problems that may be causing a late introduction of a new product.Today's supply chains are not only highly complex in terms of the number ofcompanies involved but also dynamically complex in that their behavior andperformance variations over time range from "hard to comprehend" to baffling. It's no wonder that management is so difficult and challenging. Developing anintuitive grasp of supply chain dynamic behavior is the first step in drivingperformance improvement. In this book, a system dynamics framework for analyzing complex supplychain performance is presented. The feedback nature of supply chains is demonstrated and dynamic simulation models are used to examine the counterintuitive behavior that arises from time delays, lack of information, and incorrect planning assumptions. The benefits of establishing push-pull boundaries in supply chains are shown to provide increased customer service levels with reduce...

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,0, Leipzig Graduate School of Management, course: Logistik, language: English, abstract: Sustainability has become a significant issue in many companies as it affects their reputation among customers. At the same time, outsourcing and globalization have resulted in the spreading out of supply chains across continents. Therefore, the focus of implementing sustainability has shifted from the single organization to the entire supply chain. This is of particular importance for chocolate manufacturers with their multinational supply chains as they are held responsible by the public for any irregularities which happen in their supply chain.Chocolate brand owners have been confronted with increasing criticism and pressure from politics and public due to the lack of sustainability in their supply chain. A current example is the TV documentary "Schmutzige Schokolade", a film about child labor on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast, for which the Danish filmmaker Miki Mistrati blames the chocolate manufacturers. The film, which was broadcasted on ARD on October, 6th, 2010, at 11:30p.m., has been sold altogether to 18 countries and was consequently watched by several million television viewers. Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 8.5, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (Anthropology and Development Studies), course: M.Sc. in Development Studies, language: English, abstract: The main theoretical contribution of this research can be found in the attempt of connecting - probably for the first time - structural violence with the exploitation of workers embedded into the global market through a specific commodity-chain. Even though any definition of structural violence leaves open the possibility of applying it to the impairment caused by economic structures, its implementation in an analysis of relations of production in order to study the labour exploitation within a specific industry is, certainly, a pioneering effort. In spite of a widespread awareness about exploitation of the agrarian working class in the Global South, the rhetoric about smallholders' inclusion into the global market tends to conceal their exposure to exploitation behind the miraculous benefits of the self-entrepreneurial model. Nowadays - in the era of global capitalism - there exist new forms of surplus extraction beside the traditional wage-labour power exchange. Currently, the capital does not necessarily exert control over production throughout the direct ownership of every means of production. It can even leave the ownership of the land in the hand of smallholders as long as the appropriation of surplus v...

With the global population projected to reach 9 billion by the year 2050, the need for nations to secure food supplies for their populations has never been more pressing. Finding better supply chain solutions is an essential part of achieving a secure and sustainable diet for a rapidly increasing population. We are now in a position, through methods including life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprinting and other tools, to accurately measure and assess our use – or misuse – of natural resources, including food. The impact of new technologies and management systems can therefore improve efficiencies and find new ways to reduce waste. Global Food Security and Supply provides robust, succinct information for people who want to understand how the global food system works. The book demonstrates the specific tools available for understanding how food supply works, addresses the challenges facing a secure and safe global food supply, and helps readers to appreciate how these challenges might be overcome. This book is a concise and accessible text that focuses on recent data and findings from a range of international collaborations and studies. The author provides both a snapshot of global food supply and security today, and a projection of where these issues may lead us in the future. This book will therefore be of particular interest to food policy leaders, commercial managers in the food industry, and researchers and students seeking a better understanding of a rapidly evolving topic.

Mayolo Alberto López Castellanos Agent Based Simulation Approach to Assess Supply Chain Complexity and its Impact on Performance

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 80.00, Louvain School of Management, language: English, abstract: This paper addresses the question of how the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), defined as the industrial aspect of the fourth industrial revolution, will impact supply chain management (SCM) decisions. With this goal in mind, we first describe the conceptual and historical approaches of both the industry and supply chain management. The question of the legitimacy of a new industrial revolution is answered positively and the supply chain management discipline is organised in a flow-based model of ten managerial categories. A thorough cross-field literature analysis delivers the main changes, opportunities and challenges that the upcoming IIoT will bring to supply chains. A neutral approach is favoured and the generally optimistic literature regarding the IIoT is questioned. Cyber-physical systems will indeed redefine the way we provide goods and services to customers and therefore, the way entire supply chains are managed, strategically and operationally. More information, connectivity and intelligence will optimise operations to enable mass customisation and faster than ever times-to-market. Those changes will gradually transform supply chains into smart supply ecosystems, where inter-company boundaries will fade, and the nature of cooperation will evolve. Nonetheless, there is still a long way t...

1968 and Global Cinema

1968 and Global Cinema addresses a notable gap in film studies. Although scholarship exists on the late 1950s and 1960s New Wave films, research that puts cinemas on 1968 into dialogue with one another across national boundaries is surprisingly lacking. Only in recent years have histories of 1968 begun to consider the interplay among social movements globally. The essays in this volume, edited by Christina Gerhardt and Sara Saljoughi, cover a breadth of cinematic movements that were part of the era's radical politics and independence movements. Focusing on history, aesthetics, and politics, each contribution illuminates conventional understandings of the relationship of cinema to the events of 1968, or "the long Sixties."The volume is organized chronologically, highlighting the shifts and developments in ideology in different geographic contexts. The first section, "The Long Sixties: Cinematic New Waves," examines both the visuals of new cinemas, as well as new readings of the period's politics in various geopolitical iterations. This half of the book begins with an argument that while the impact of Italian Neorealism and the French New Wave on subsequent global new waves is undeniable, the influence of cinemas of the so-called Global South is pivotal for the era's cinema as well. The second section, "Aftershocks," considers the lasting impact of 1968 and related cinematic new waves into the 1970s. The essays in this section range from Chin...

Over the past decade organizations have faced relentless customer demand for better value at less cost, individual customization, greater choice, faster delivery, higher quality, exceptional service, and more recently – increased environmental and social consciousness. The organization’s weapon of choice to address this increasing demand has been the supply chain. However, as the supply chain footprint changed (e.g. outsourcing, off-shoring and customer/vendor empowerment) so did the organization’s exposure to uncertainty. Organizations were taken by surprise since this exposure was unanticipated, complex and beyond their ability to manage. As customers become more demanding and change occurs at an even greater pace, supply chain risk continues to propagate like a parasite. Organizations and societies are at much greater risk of systemic failure because of the massive interdependency throughout global supply chains. The priority now is two-fold; play catch-up and address these massive gaps while deploying more intelligent and integrated strategies (i.e. social aware, instinctive, dynamic and predictive) for dealing with continuous change. Single Point of Failure: The 10 Essential Laws of Supply Chain Risk Management uses analogies and dozens of case histories to describe the risk parasite that infects all supply chains while revealing methods to neutralize that parasite. The book addresses the questions: What are the «single points of failure»? How exposed are customers, investors, other stakeholders and ultimately the organization? What is the measurable impact (i.e. brand, financial, strategic, and non-compliance)? Who establishes the «risk paradigm»? How does the organization efficiently and effectively allocate precious resources – time, people, management attention, and capital? How is success measured? This book is both technically powerful and effectively realistic, based on today's complex global economy.

This book sets out the case for a cosmopolitan approach to contemporary global politics. It presents a systematic theory of cosmopolitanism, explicating its core principles and justifications, and examines the role many of these principles have played in the development of global politics, such as framing the human rights regime. The framework is then used to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the crisis of financial markets, climate change and the fallout from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In each case, Held argues that realistic politics is exhausted, and that cosmopolitanism is the new realism. See also Garrett Wallace Brown and David Held's The Cosmopolitanism Reader.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: EP, , course: Doctor of Philosophy, language: English, abstract: The present paper investigates the effect of Western religion on governance, policies, and politics, within both the domestic and the global contexts. This question, however, leads into the need for deep ideological analysis. The paper thus defines the concept of Western religion, and then proceeds to show how Western religion is inseparable from Western civilization, including modern values which are often called secular but which, in fact, have ideological roots that can be traced to Western religion. Over the course of this analysis, an opposition emerges between Western religion on the one hand and secular progressivism on the other-the latter of which is both derived from and antagonistic toward Western religion. The contours of this ideological conflict and their implications are explored through the development of a comprehensive theoretical framework. The independent research of the present paper consists of an interview with a selected congressman. The interview seeks to delve into the congressman's views regarding Western religion and its effects on governance, policies, and politics. This data is analyzed using a qualitative method. Finally, the present paper analyzes and discusses the statements of the congressman in the interview in light of the p...

Stuart Emmett and Vivek Sood's book provides a clear strategic overview and actionable plan for the implementation of green supply chains. For anyone grappling with the elements required to change an organization's supply chain strategy in a 'green' direction, this book is a must read. «Having worked with Stuart Emmett on other ground breaking books, I can empathically say that this book written with Vivek Sood is another one in the same mould. This enjoyable book not only covers a topic that is critically relevant for every individual, but also provides a practical road map for a green supply chain strategy. Strongly recommended, it is a book of it time.» —Barry Crocker, Author and MSC Program Leader, University of Salford «After co-creating the supply chain management methodology in 1979, I have remained at the forefront of this field for the last 30 years by continually pushing the boundaries of thoughts and applications in Supply Chain Management. But, during all this time, nothing has excited me as much as our current endeavor on Green Supply Chains. It is the need of the moment, resonating in all directions. What is more important, it makes perfect commercial sense. This book by Vivek Sood and Stuart Emmett is a big step in furthering that discussion. It should be on the bookshelf of every progressive manager.» —Dr Wolfgang Partsch, Global Supply Chain Group, Munich, Germany «…As supply chains have become more visible to people around the world, and at the same time more global, questions about their impact on the environment and global sustainability have increased. People who care about our Planet often wonder what are the adverse impacts of transporting goods thousands of miles…goods that are often produced in manufacturing plants that are not environmentally friendly…and then packaged in what becomes waste. So, companies and governments worldwide have begun to address the questions. The authors have addressed the questions in an insightful manner. They have analyzed the supply chain processes, presented new ideas, and have backed these up with solid case examples from leading companies. The book is a must read for anyone who manages a supply chain, cares about the environment, and seeks actionable ideas for 'going green'.» —Gene Tyndall, Executive Vice President, Global Tompkins International «This book treats the 'Next Generation' Supply Chain in a phenomenal way. It is an emerging topic, a paradigm shifting approach for companies on their radical cost saving waves, and an absolutely necessary component of the sustainability for our Planet.» —Ahmet Yalçın Managing Partner at Stars of Europeand Chairman of the Board of the German Solar Energy company Green Enesys Group

GMOs, Consumerism and the Global Politics of Biotechnology. Rethinking Food, Bodies and Identities in Africa.s 21st Century

Despite sustained continental and national struggles for autonomy, sovereignty and independence in postcolonial Africa, the continent is increasingly embattled by the forces of globalisation which threaten African identity that is at the core of African struggles for continental and national unity. Situating the debates in the contemporary discourses on decoloniality, global consumerism, global food apartheid and the challenges and prospects of the emergent sharing economies, this book critically examines the importation, use and implications of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other such non-food products on African bodies, institutions and cultures. The book poses questions about how Africa can be decolonised both politically and in terms of global food apartheid and the dehumanising importation and use of “foreign” non-food products, some of which militate against the ethos of [African] identity, Renaissance and indigeneity.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, Deakin University, language: English, abstract: Humanitarian intervention and R2P, have been plagued in practice by a pervasive lack of political will to action. To overcome this situation and supply determinacy for international responses to global manifestations of mass atrocities, a two-stage approach is required.Firstly increasing political will via the development of a new and encompassing moral edict, where humanitarian intervention and R2P are recognised as unavoidable obligations upon the international community. And secondly increasing political will via an achievable reform agenda that lowers political/material barriers, and diminishes the size and scope of future humanitarian challenges. An approach that fundamentally represents the creation of restructured global paradigm, whereby the 'ethics vs. politics' decision-making equation is tilted to the point that future emergent humanitarian emergencies will predicably and consistently meet with timely and decisive intervention. Such an approach is achievable, predominantly through an adaption and expansion of the work of cosmopolitan philosopher Thomas Pogge.

Cheryl Woolsey Des Jarlais Western Structures Meet Native Traditions. The Interfaces of Educational Cultures (PB)

As Western educational practices have become global, the cultural aspects and the problems associatedwith them have become more apparent as they are contrasted with local ways of learning andknowing in the widely diverse societies around the world. The Western world has tended to assumethat its concepts of progress and development should be universally welcomed, especially in countriesthat are struggling economically. Most cultures tend to feel a similar preference for their ownworld views. However, the West has had a history of not only ethnocentrism, but colonialism, inwhich it has forcibly attempted to reshape the cultures, societies, politics, and economics of conqueredterritories in its own likeness. Though some of the more overt, political colonialist practiceshave been abandoned, colonial ways of thinking, thinking about thinking, and training in how tothink, are still practiced, and these in turn, through the education of each nation-state's children, affect every aspect of economics, politics, and social development in the global village that ourworld has become. It is critical to examine the basic assumptions of Western education in order to trace their effects on local ways ofknowing in many areas which may not share these assumptions, and which may be threatened and destroyed by them as global interactionin politics, economics, and education increases. The argument that education is primarily a moral endeavor may have been forced into the background for a time b...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 2,0, University of Twente (School of Management and Governance), language: English, abstract: The United Kingdom has been at the epicentre of the global financial crisis erupting in 2007. The City of London's global interconnectedness as well as the long-established culture of regulatory self-independence triggered a near meltdown in the British banking system. Next to the immediate consequences for the British economy as a whole, the financial crisis led to a fundamental change of direction in national economic policies and destabilized a system of politics that had governed financial regulation in the UK for over two decades. The Thatcher administration had replaced the decaying manufacturing industry with a finance-led service sector and hence made the City of London the centrepiece of a self-ruling world based on the principles of privatisation and deregulation. The banking crash in September 2007, however, destroyed the illusion that an economic system which relied on light-touch financial regulation to promote the international competitiveness of the City was competent at the job of securing financial stability. The scale and prolonged effects of the financial crisis provided the central backdrop to the general election in May 2010. The financial crisis spurred ad-hoc policy responses around the globe and energized efforts to strengthen financial ...

The book should also aid decision makers looking to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of their supply chain. When new products are developed, a significant divide typically emerges in trying to commercialize the product while attempting to meet project demands for cost, schedule, and quality. Simply put, in many cases the supply chains developed to accomplish R&D functions are usually woefully inadequate to meet the demands of large-scale commercial applications. This book recounts the real-world work efforts, rigor, and discipline used to transition from a supply chain supporting R&D functions to a world-class supply chain capable of supporting a multibillion-dollar hydrocarbon recovery project.

The issues that increasingly dominate the 21st century cannot be solved by any single country acting alone, no matter how powerful. To manage the global economy, prevent runaway environmental destruction, reign in nuclear proliferation, or confront other global challenges, we must cooperate. But at the same time, our tools for global policymaking – chiefly state-to-state negotiations over treaties and international institutions – have broken down. The result is gridlock, which manifests across areas via a number of common mechanisms. The rise of new powers representing a more diverse array of interests makes agreement more difficult. The problems themselves have also grown harder as global policy issues penetrate ever more deeply into core domestic concerns. Existing institutions, created for a different world, also lock-in pathological decision-making procedures and render the field ever more complex. All of these processes – in part a function of previous, successful efforts at cooperation – have led global cooperation to fail us even as we need it most. Ranging over the main areas of global concern, from security to the global economy and the environment, this book examines these mechanisms of gridlock and pathways beyond them. It is written in a highly accessible way, making it relevant not only to students of politics and international relations but also to a wider general readership.

Simon Barth Managerial perception and assessment of catastrophic supply chain risks

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: Purpose - Catastrophic supply chain risks can have severe effects on companies' supply chains. Still, previous supply chain risk management research has predominantly focused on operationalrisks. The purpose of this study is to explore the construct of managerial risk perception and the assessment stage of catastrophic supply chain risks.Design/methodology/approach - A risky decision making model for catastrophic supply chain risks was applied in an explorative multiple case study approach. Interviews served as the mainsource for information.Findings - The degree of supply chain integration was found to be a prime determinant of the potential damage caused by disruptions due to catastrophic supply chain risks. The frequency of catastrophic supply chain events seems to be influenced to some degree by the number of suppliers. It is suggested that managerial perception of catastrophic supply chain risks is formed by the degree of potential damage and past exposure to catastrophic supply chain events. Several barriers to the assessment of catastrophic supply chain risks, such as missing top management priority, low supply chain risk management maturity and lack of obvious return were identified.A combination of "softer" supply chain risk assessment methods, expert opinions and simulation te...
