The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning presents a comprehensive exploration of the impact of technology on the field of second language learning. The rapidly evolving language-technology interface has propelled dramatic changes in, and increased opportunities for, second language teaching and learning. Its influence has been felt no less keenly in the approaches and methods of assessing learners' language and researching language teaching and learning. Contributions from a team of international scholars make up the Handbook consisting of four parts: language teaching and learning through technology; the technology-pedagogy interface; technology for L2 assessment; and research and development of technology for language learning. It considers how technology assists in all areas of language development, the emergence of pedagogy at the intersection of language and technology, technology in language assessment, and major research issues in research and development of technologies for language learning. It covers all aspects of language including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pragmatics, and intercultural learning, as well as new pedagogical and assessment approaches, and new ways of conceiving and conducting research and development. The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning demonstrates the extensive, multifaceted implications of technology for language teachers, learners, materials-developers, and researchers.

This paper will try to present those three basic theories, also taking into account the contexts out of which they emerged, as to fully understand linguistic, like any other scientific, views and theories, they have always to be evaluated with respect to the scientific and cultural background they appeared in.First it will try to show how Skinners concept of 'verbal behavior' with respect to language acquisition emerged in the development of behaviouristic theories. This will be followed by Chomsky's criticism of Skinner's ideas, leading to his own theory of language and language acquisition, which will be presented. Jean Piaget offers a cognitive approach to the question. His view will be described before comparing nativist and cognitivist ideas, concerning the points whether or not innate structures exist and in how far linguistic and cognitive development are interrelated, taking the opposed views of Piaget ...

Addressing issues of language is crucial for improving mathematicslearning and teaching for students who are bilingual, multilingual, or learning English. These issues are alsorelevant to theory: studies that make language visible provide a complex perspective of the role of languagein reasoning and learning mathematics. What is the relevant knowledge base to consider when designingresearch studies that address issues of language in the learning and teaching of mathematics? Whatscholarly literature is relevant and can contribute to research? In order to address issues of language inmathematics education, researchers need to use theoretical perspectives that integrate current views ofmathematics learning and teaching with current views on language, discourse, bilingualism, and secondlanguage acquisition. This volume contributes to the development of such integrated approaches to research on language issues in mathematicseducation by describing theoretical perspectives for framing the study of language issues and methodological issues to consider when designingresearch studies. Language in academic settings, also referred to academic language, has gained attentionin the field of second language learning owing to new understandings of the complexitiesof language inherent in learning academic content, and new efforts to assessEnglish learners' language proficiency in the context of school learning. The conceptof academic language as distinct from social language has been in the academic literaturesince the mid-1950s, and surfaced as a major construct in the field of bilingualeducation in the 1980s. Many readers will be familiar with the ideas of BICS andCALP, first introduced by Jim Cummins in the 1980s. This book presents a critique ofacademic language as a separable construct from social language, and introduces currentresearch efforts to understand how English learners interact, interpret, and showunderstanding of language in academic contexts in ways that re-think and go beyondthe distinction between social and academic language. The book is organized into three main sections, each with a range of chapters that consider how academic language playsinto how children and youth learn academic content as emergent bilingual students in school settings. Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik / Amerikanistik), course: Grammaticalization, language: English, abstract: This paper aims at observing the processes and mechanisms of grammaticalization, taking as an example the development of ought (to) and should from earlier stages of the English language up to the present day. In the very beginning, terminological questions will be discussed. Therefore, the first step will be to concentrate on the term 'grammar', before the terms 'modality', 'mood', and 'modal system' are analyzed. What will follow is a look at attempts to categorize the constructions under examination, since the allocation of ought (to) is disputed and somewhat fuzzy. Although the next step will mean not to proceed completely chronologically, it is important to describe how should and ought (to) work in PDE to better understand their development. After that, the semantic and morphosyntactic development of both constructions throughout the history of the English language will be described. Taking the observed changes as a basis, the development of the forms will finally be related to grammaticalization, where the principles proposed by Lehmann (1985) and Hopper (1991) will play a major role.

Following the paradigm shift in the area of language teaching from the previous teacher-centered methodologies towards learner-centeredness, attempts were made to bring up the learners who could take responsibility for their own learning. The ultimate goal of this new trend was to make language learners autonomous and independent in the process of language learning. Thus, new studies focused on investigating the characteristics of language learners in order to determine and highlight the characteristics of good language learners and make them available to other learners. The conducted explorations revealed that one of the areas in which good language learners were reported to excel other learners was known as language learning strategies (LLSs). These studies showed that instructing the appropriate strategies could enable language learners to process the language more efficiently and in the long run could lead to the development of communicative competence, enhanced proficiency, and autonomy in the learners. This caused many researchers to turn their interests to studies related to LLSs and to try to define theoretically this new concept.

This study explores and used different methodological approach to lifespan development to measure and analyze the interplay of genes and environments on human behavior and underline how the interaction contributes to behavioral changes and continuity. The study planned to increase our knowledge and understanding of the interaction between heritable and ecological factors in the path of behavioral growth and patently recognize etiological mechanism that support the assumption that a particular hereditary or environmental condition ultimately lead to behavioral feature and changes during development. The study used the accessible materials on lifespan development to understand the continuous source of person uniqueness in personality development. Finally, citing evidence from various multidisplinary studies, the article concluded that shared environment significantly influenced human behavior but decline with age and that the strong interaction between the two factors formed the basis of who we are and how we behave.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics and Law, course: International Business Management, language: English, abstract: This case study research on the Indian automobile company Mahindra & Mahindra adds to the debate on latecomer companies from emerging markets. It investigates the model of „crisis construction‟, which has been introduced by Linsu Kim, as an effective means for catching up. An extensive research in journal and newspaper articles, annual reports and further company publications forms the basis of this study. In addition, three expert interviews were conducted to give a comprehensive and in-depth view of the four development phases between 1990 and 2010. These four phases describe the corporate development over time in aspects of technological catch up, internationalization and organizational learning. One result of this study is that Kim‟s proposed model can be applied to other companies in other business environments successfully. In addition, this paper suggests approaches of how to better classify events as „constructed crises‟, how to better identify means of overcoming these crises and how to better evaluate the outcome of these crises. As a final part, this case study research gives explanations as to why „crisis construction‟ is not applicable for pioneering and proposes an alteration of Linsu Kim‟s linear learning model.

The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrati...

Teachers need to develop and apply proactive and positive attitudes to foster new levels of foreign language learning within their students. Teaching, on its own, is not a panacea for success. This paper investigates how teachers at the Universidad de Oriente (UO) in Santiago de Cuba search for and apply innovative ways of teaching foreign languages to their students within current boundaries. The results from this research show that there is a positive relationship between the level of proficiency in a foreign language and the methods and approaches teachers apply to keep students motivated and interested in the subject matter. The literature review from this study provided supportive evidence which was strengthened with insights from face to face interviews and a focus group meeting. The outcomes confirmed that students, who are exposed regularly to practical and diverse teaching methods, are more likely to exceed the expected foreign language proficiency levels set by the University's quality standards.
