Most of the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Kenya live in various parts of the country and share many of the trials and tribulations associated with providing care to someone suffering from a terminal illness. Some have been forced into the role due to the death of their love one, while others may have voluntarily taken on the responsibility on a firm belief that the care they provide will make a difference. The experiences shared in this book capture some of day-to-day political, social, economic, cultural challenges and obstacles encountered by the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Nairobi, Kenya. Caregiver challenges are reviewed and recommendations are offered on the way forward. It also explores the role of the church and international social work in addressing international issues.

Sexuality in modern western culture is central to identity but the tendency to define by sexuality does not apply to the premodern past. Before the 'invention' of sexuality, erotic acts and desires were comprehended as species of sin, expressions of idealised love, courtship, and marriage, or components of intimacies between men or women, not as outworkings of an innermost self. With a focus on c. 1100–c. 1800, this book explores the shifting meanings, languages, and practices of western sex. It is the first study to combine the medieval and early modern to rethink this time of sex before sexuality, where same-sex and opposite-sex desire and eroticism bore but faint traces of what moderns came to call heterosexuality, homosexuality, lesbianism, and pornography. This volume aims to contribute to contemporary historical theory through paying attention to the particularity of premodern sexual cultures. Phillips and Reay argue that students of premodern sex will be blocked in their understanding if they use terms and concepts applicable to sexuality since the late nineteenth century, and modern commentators will never know their subject without a deeper comprehension of sex's history.

A new way for Christians to think about sexuality Author Miguel De La Torre, a well-respected ethicist and professor known for his innovative readings of Christian doctrine, rejects both the liberal and conservative prejudices about sex. He instead develops an ethic that is liberative yet grounded soundly in the Bible; a sexuality that celebrates God’s gift of great sex by fostering intimacy, vulnerability and openness between loving partners. In A Lily Among the Thorns, De La Torre examines the Bible, current events, history and our culture-at-large to show how and why racism, sexism, and classism have distorted Christianity’s central teachings about sexuality. The author shows how the church’s traditionally negative attitudes toward sex in general—and toward women, people of color, and gays in particular—have made it difficult, if not impossible, to create a biblically based and just sexual ethic. But when the Bible is read from the viewpoint of those who have been marginalized in our society, preconceived notions about Christianity and sex get turned on their heads. Taking on hot-button topics such as pornography, homosexuality, prostitution, and celibacy, the author examines how “reading from the margins” provides a liberating approach to dealing with issues of sexuality.

In this two volume multidisciplinary edited book The Modern Caribbean Economy, Volume I provides scholars and practitioners with alternative theoretical perspectives and concrete policy recommendations, while Volume II discusses economic, industrial, and social problems facing the Caribbean along with pragmatic proposals to successfully deal with these, while building local resilience and enhancing institutional strength in the region.

Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa (PB)

The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrati...

Social Movements in Global Politics is a timely new account of the unconventional, ‘extra-institutional’ activities of social movements. In the face of impending global crises and stubborn conflicts, a conventional view of politics risks leaving us confused and fatalistic, feeling powerless because we are unaware of all that can be achieved by political means. By contrast, a variety of recent social movements, ranging from those of women, gays and lesbians and anti-racists, to environmentalists, the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, demonstrate the enormous potential of political action beyond the institutional sphere of politics. At the same time, religious fundamentalists, racial supremacists and ultra-nationalists make clear that movements are not necessarily progressive and are often at odds with one another. West highlights the many ways in which national and global institutions depend on a broader context of extra-institutional action or what is, in effect, the formative dimension of politics. He explores some of the major contributions of social movements: from the genealogy of liberal democratic nation-states, sixties’ radicalism and the ‘new social movements’ to the politics of sexuality, gender and identity, the politicization of nature and climate, and alter-globalization. The book also considers current theoretical approaches and sets out the basis for a critical theory of social movements. This is a fresh and original account of social movements in politics and will be essential reading for any students and scholars interested in the challenges and the unpredictable potential of political action.

To make informed sexual choices one agent that is needed outside the family is the teacher in schools. Trends in adolescent sexual behaviour are changing, and teachers must be aware of these trends to provide necessary sexuality education to this cohort. The aim of this study, therefore, was to examine teachers' view points on adolescent sexuality education. The study was conducted among 90 randomly selected teachers in three selected secondary schools in Anyigba, Kogi State, Nigeria. Data for the study were collected with the use of structured self-administered questionnaire. Frequency counts and simple percentage were used to analyze the data generated for the survey. The study found that teachers' knowledge about sexuality education was high. They were also positively disposed towards the teaching of sexuality to students in schools, though, their attitude were poor. Data also revealed some benefits and hindrances to effective sexuality education in schools..

They have sought to develop systems that would provide adequate financial resources and to be affordable to all those sharing in the costs, through mechanisms that will not entail financial barriers to seeking care, particularly at the time of illness. In theory, social health insurance has the most potential to achieve health policy objectives, in practice it has been difficult to achieve in low-income countries because, implementing Social Health Insurance in economically, socially, and culturally diverse environments, produces unexpected challenges. Linkages between overcoming the challenges of implementing social health insurance in low-income countries and the success of the scheme vary from institutional, legal and technical point of view. Mohamed A. Eno The Bantu - Jareer Somali. Unearthing Apartheid in the Horn of Africa

Somalia is generally thought of as a homogenous society, with a common Arabic ancestry, a shared culture of nomadism and one Somali mother tongue. This study challenges this myth. Using the Jareer/Bantu as a case study, the book shows how the Negroid physical features of this ethnic group has become the basis for ethnic marginalization, stigma, social exclusion and apartheid in Somalia. The book is another contribution to the recent deconstruction of the perceived Somali homogeneity and self-same assertions. It argues that the Somalis, just like most societies, employ multiple levels of social and ethnic distinctions, one of which is the Jareer versus Jileec divide. Dr. Eno successfully portrays another Somalia, in which a mythical homogeneity masks the oppression and social exclusion suffered by some ethnic groups in the country.

Barry Reay Sex Addiction. A Critical History

The concept of sex addiction took hold in the 1980s as a product of cultural anxiety. Yet, despite being essentially mythical, sex addiction has to be taken seriously as a phenomenon. Its success as a purported malady lay with its medicalization, both as a self-help movement in terms of self-diagnosis, and as a rapidly growing industry of therapists treating the new disease. The media played a role in its history, first with TV, the tabloids and the case histories of claimed celebrity victims all helping to popularize the concept, and then with the impact of the Internet. This book is a critical history of an archetypically modern sexual syndrome. Reay, Attwood and Gooder argue that this strange history of social opportunism, diagnostic amorphism, therapeutic self-interest and popular cultural endorsement is marked by an essential social conservatism: sex addiction has become a convenient term to describe disapproved sex. It is a label without explanatory force. This book will be essential reading for those interested in sexuality studies, contemporary history, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, media studies and studies of the Internet. It will also be of interest to doctors and therapists currently working in this and related fields.

Having gone through the three levels of education in Kenya, (that is primary, secondary and university) and with a long teaching experience, noted that the most serious bottleneck facing our education system is the indiscipline that leads to unrest or strikes in schools and universities. This often escalates into massive destruction of private and public property by students any time they go on rampage. There is need for the Education sector to address the challenge in relation to student discipline. In order to achieve the goals of National education and become a middle level economy by 2030. The nation must awaken to reforms that would help bring change in society. Careful considerations can be made to ensure that unrest is a thing of the past in learning institutions in Kenya by embracing dialogue, collective and participative decision making in learning institutions.

John Ackah, Sylvester Vuvor The challenges facing SMEs in accessing credit (loans) in Ghana

The Challenges facing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Obtaining Credit in Ghana, highlights the issues facing Ghana's SMEs in their quest to accessing loans from financial institutions to undertake various business activities all in the name of creating jobs and the ultimate goal of helping to reduce poverty. There are financial institutions that are willing to provide credit facilities to SMEs but Ghanaian SMEs are not able to meet the requirements of these financial institutions even though they are really in need of the loan. Chief among the requirements demanded by these financial institutions is collateral. The nature of collateral in this part of the world is mostly landed property, which most SMEs cannot provide to cover the amount they really need. As a result, some of these SMEs settle for an amount far less than what they truly require to really drive their business agenda. This book thus takes a look at these challenges from the perspective of the Ghanaian SME operators.

Social and legal norms and economic structures based around sexuality have a tangible impact on people's physical security, bodily integrity, health, education, mobility and economic status. Many people with 'deviant' sexuality are subject to economic discrimination, leading to marginalization that has effect of reducing their livelihood opportunities. In this Publication the links between women's sexual rights and poverty in the African context is explored . It illustrates how the lack of protection and recognition of women's sexual rights as understood in the African context can be the cause and consequences of poverty. The publication provides arguments as to how addressing sexual rights of women in poverty alleviation programmes can contribute to the realization of meaningful development for the African women and a way forward as to how the issue of Sexual Rights and poverty can be fostered.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: 1.0, University of Pretoria, language: English, abstract: This study seeks to establish how the legal and institutional framework for positive complementarity may be effectively implemented. It is argued that the existing legal and institutional framework in respect of the effective combatting of impunity is largely unsatisfactory. The evolution of the principle of complementarity, in the context of the Rome Statute, is explored with emphasis on the theoretical constraints on the principle which, in turn, raise practical challenges. The analysis provides a theoretical background to the conceptualisation of positive complementarity. The study traces the evolution and development of the concept of positive complementarity, examining its characteristic features and attributes, and the possibilities and opportunities the concept presents for the effective combatting of impunity. It examines the various scholarly arguments and propositions advanced to explain the concept of positive complementarity, and analyses the attendant challenges and limitations. It is noted that there is no fixed and universally acceptable definition of positive complementarity. It is therefore argued that there is a need for the establishment of a coherent legal and institutional framework for positive complementarity. In this light, appropriate policy alternatives and considerations bot...
