The present book studies the effectiveness of routine nutrition assessment offered to improve the nutrition status, well-being and quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS attending HIV treatment and care at Hewu Hospital in Chris Hani District of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. With the knowledge that HIV and malnutrition are interlinked, a great need for on-going nutritional assessment becomes critical in the treatment and care of people living with HIV and AIDS. In the absences of ARV treatment , people living with HIV and AIDS have a tendency to lose weight and ultimately become undernourished. At the same time ARV treatment is known to be associated with longer life span hence people living with HIV and AIDS tend to gain weight becoming overweight or obese.

Secondly, the PLWHA have developed negative attitudes in their relationships with the community, by denying the reality of living with the disease. Thirdly, the community perceives the PLWHA as different from themselves, people from whom they should distance themselves. Fourthly, there is great fear of HIV/AIDS which hinders the common person from discussing issues related to HIV/AIDS.The findings of this study have shown that to succeed in combating HIV/AIDS one has to tackle the challenges posed by the stigma associated with the epidemic; otherwise the efforts to provide care, treatment and prevention will not have an impact and ultimately impede efforts to defeat HIV/AIDS in the world.

The impact of HIV/AIDS goes beyond individuals infected with the pandemic to reach broadly into the society, both disrupting the functioning of communities and complicating prevention and its treatment. Given the increased quality and length of life of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), many organizations are faced with the challenge of accommodating PLWHAs. This study focused on the perceptions of employees towards working with HIV/AIDS infected co-workers at Fedics Food Services in Eastern Cape. The study was done to shade light on the willingness of employees to work with HIV/AIDS colleagues regardless of whether they exist in the organization or not. The study was a quantitative research whereby self administered questionnaires were distributed to respondents. Descriptive data analysis was used to establish employee perceptions on HIV/AIDS and the chi-square was used to determine the levels of significance of each response. The results showed that employees at Fedics Food services were willing to work with HIV/AIDS infected co-workers.

African AIDS, in the West, is often associated with media images of skeletal, forlorn-looking and dying Africans inviting the sympathy of the viewer or reader. Associated with these images are often motleys of subtly hidden narratives - poverty, promiscuity, failed leadership, impending Armageddon, and lately the greed and heartlessness of Western drugs companies who are harangued for prioritising profits over African lives. But how do Africans themselves see AIDS? What do they believe causes the disease? How do those affected by the undeniable epidemic really live with it? And how has the disease affected the Africans' sense of who they are? With the possible exception of the perspectives espoused by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa - much of which is distorted - the African AIDS discourse, has, as with most things African, been severely marginalized, if not completely kept away from the Western media. Dr Raymond Downing, an American medical doctor, who with his wife (also a medical doctor) have been living and practising medicine in different African countries for over fifteen years, seeks to plug this lacuna with this book. Based on personal observations, interviews, the reading of African press, books and AIDS narrative in African fiction, as well as in academic papers, Dr Downing charts the development of the African AIDS discourse. He invites the reader to look beyond the AIDS epidemic to see how Africans view health and diseases in general. Raymond Downing was...

Most children with HIV live in this region. Globally, the annual numbers of people newly infected with HIV continues to decline (Global HIV/AIDS Response progress report, 2011).

People with AIDS often suffer from major physical and psychosocial distress due to their experience of serious life-threatening illness. The palliative care needs of AIDS patients at Tikur Anbessa hospital are very high and interrelated. Their palliative care needs are not addressed by the existing health care services due to limited access. Besides the available services are not holistic and they are not integrated with other services. Therefore promoting standard palliative care services for patients and their families is important to alleviate their distress and improve their quality of life. This book focuses on exploring the palliative care needs of AIDS patients from the perspectives of the AIDS patients and health care providers. The book came up with workable recommendations which could be used as an input in designing and implementing appropriate palliative care services in existing heath care system.

Most of the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Kenya live in various parts of the country and share many of the trials and tribulations associated with providing care to someone suffering from a terminal illness. Some have been forced into the role due to the death of their love one, while others may have voluntarily taken on the responsibility on a firm belief that the care they provide will make a difference. The experiences shared in this book capture some of day-to-day political, social, economic, cultural challenges and obstacles encountered by the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Nairobi, Kenya. Caregiver challenges are reviewed and recommendations are offered on the way forward. It also explores the role of the church and international social work in addressing international issues.

HIV and AIDS continue to be one of the most challenging developmental issues in human history. In the third decade of the HIV pandemic, women particularly young women and girls have become a growing proportion of those affected and infected.2009 estimates, suggest national adult HIV prevalence of approximately 0.34 percent, amount 1.8 to 2.9 million people living with HIV in India. One third of the AIDS cases are among the youth in the age group of 15-29 years who are the future citizens of the country. HIV with a focus on empowering women, must account for the attitude and behavior of men which are largely conditioned by socio-cultural gender norms that accrue more power and control to men in respects than women,in the traditional patriarchal setting which continues to bind and determine the lives of women even today to a large extent. Influencing the mind set of people and bringing about a change in their attitudes and behavior is more often than not faced with severe resistance and is by no means a simple task. The lack of knowledge about how to bring about normative changes, improve accountability motivate programme personnel to consider and address gender issues.

To some extent, conventional therapy to the cure of HIV and AIDS is still flawed though some significant progress has been made in coming up with life-prolonging Anti-retroviral drugs. We contend that discourses about mitigating the AIDS epidemic must take the cultural-epidemiological approach to compliment efforts that modern medical technology has done towards finding a cure to the epidemic.

The study aim was to find out if youths living with HIV and AIDS are effectively involved in dissemination of HIV prevention information amongst peers. The study further explored knowledge currently acquired by youths in the CCC, opportunities, barriers and suggestions of greater involvement, as they get involved in information dissemination. Qualitative and focused group discussions methodologies were applied with youths aged 15-24 years who disclosed their HIV status. This book is a research conducted to determine the way teachers were implementing the Interactive Methodologies in their teaching especially of learners with Hearing Impairments. HIV and AIDS in Zambia is a serious pandemic that has affected many sectors of society and research being conducted now focuses on prevention. Learners who have problems with hearing have challenges understanding key information related to HIV and AIDS. The Ministry of Education Zambia introduced some methods of teaching HIV/AIDS to learners in schools. However, it was of interest to seek understanding of how the methods were being implemented in teaching HIV/AIDS to the hearing impaired learners sort through this study. This book therefore highlights the challenges teachers found teaching HIV/AIDS prevention through the interactive methodologies. It discusses the impeding issues to successful teaching of HIV/AIDS in schools and suggests measures to abate such barriers. It is my sincere hope that this book will find value in your 'good hearts' in order to protect humanity from extinction.

After nearly 4 years of working in HIV and AIDS field, I have studied the whole episode from different parts of the world. My experience of being born and grown up in Africa, where nearly 22.5 million people are living with HIV and AIDS and has only 10% of world's population (UNAIDS/WHO,2008) and my working experience in England for nearly seven years have taught me that, the developed world approaches towards HIV Pandemic are quite different from that of developing World. The review of educational approach on HIV awareness, prevention, treatment and care management reveals that there are health inequalities between the developed and developing worlds (Pratt, 2003). In addition I have learned that the attitudes of us, Africans, towards HIV and AIDS need to change in order to effectively promote HIV/AIDS Prevention intervention in the communities, starting from the grassroots through to the government levels. The prevention Intervention of HIV in the developed world has been successful due to various opportunities and strengths including economy, technology and communities' accessibility to education which, have much influence in combating HIV and AIDS Pandemic.

The AIDS crisis is far from over, but advances in medical care have lifted the death sentence the disease once held. This wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for those who died in the wake of the epidemic and for people like author Freda Wagman who gave her all to help others, while at the same time coming to grips with her own impending loss.In Snippets from the Trenches, Wagman—a mother of a son diagnosed with AIDS—shares her journey in the trenches during the darkest hours of the AIDS epidemic in Houston, Texas. She made the ultimate sacrifice in losing her only child to the disease. But in an effort to understand her son’s illness and since 1,500 miles separated them, she embarked on a path of selfless service to help others who were often shunned by their own families.Beginning with a history of the evolution of AIDS, Snippets from the Trenches then tells a personal story of some of the people who suffered from and were lost to AIDS, as well as the angels who were there for them in their time of need. At its central, most painful layer, Wagman’s story is about the loss of Gary, her son, whose diagnosis was the catalyst for her involvement with the AIDS community. Despite her years of volunteering, nothing prepares her for the loss of her son to the same disease she has watched take so many others.

Kate Scannell Death of the Good Doctor. Lessons from the Heart of the AIDS Epidemic

Kate Scannell abandoned her academic career in 1985 expecting to enter an "ordinary" medical practice in Northern California. Instead, the thirty-two-year-old physician found herself assigned to an Alameda county hospital's AIDS ward where much of the medicine she had studied over many difficult years was rendered irrelevant.Working with AIDS patients, nearly all of whom were dying, Scannell discovered the inadequacy of the "good doctor" who battles illness to keep patients alive regardless of their suffering. By embracing her patients’ unique needs and stories, Scannell reached an expanded understanding of her patients and of herself as a physician.Death of the Good Doctor richly chronicles the intimacy of Scannell’s relationships with her patients through whom the vast complexities of the AIDS epidemic are uniquely focused. It is through these beautiful, often difficult, and sometimes humorous portraits that the woman and the physician discover each other. From the Back Cover"This haunting memoir is an important addition to the canon of AIDS literature. Scannell writes beautifully and with an insight that escapes most physicians."—Abraham Verghese, author of My Own Country and Cutting for Stone“Kate Scannell is the rare doctor who has been transformed by her patients. In this irresistible, informative, and enormously moving book, she tells us not only her own story, but theirs.”—Gloria Steinem

Ghana is a country in West Africa, which is facing the challenges of improving HIV and AIDS situation. The study investigated the causes, effects and coping mechanism used by female HIV-clients and AIDS-patients in Lower Manya Krobo District. This was a qualitative study underpinning by interpretative philosophical thought. It employed a case study approach and collected data using semi-structured interview guide. Snowball sampling technique was used to sample the view of ten (10) female HIV-clients and convenience sampling for four (4) female AIDS-patients and four (4) selected Key Informants. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The study highlighted multiple factors that cause female in the Lower Manya Krobo District to be vulnerable to HIV infection. These included women sexual passivity, poverty, promiscuity and poor culture practice. The study also showed that loss of income and discrimination affected female with HIV and AIDS. Finally, the research unveiled that counselling, financial support; acceptance and visitation from friends help them to cope with the disease.

HIV & AIDS together constitute one of the most serious challenges to human life in our time. The consequences are often grave for individuals, families, whole communities and nations. How can Christians respond to this worldwide problem? This book is designed to equip church leaders and their communities with the means to save, protect and prolong lives, and, above all, enable people to live positively in the face of the HIV & AIDS epidemic. The authors forcefully argue this involvement to be seen, not as an additional activity to ministry, but as a calling that enriches ministry's essential meaning and value. Byamugisha's straightforward explanation of HIV & AIDS and suggestions for Christian responses are complemented by case studies from around the globe.

It's been likened to a plague, but AIDS was never just a health crisis. The second of a series on grieving the death of a friend, Grief and AIDS: Thirty Years of Burying Our Friends, revisits a time when people with AIDS were also victims of bigotry and discrimination. In stories about Ryan White, ACT UP, the Names Project, red ribbons and more, you'll learn why friends made all the difference: not just caregiving or memorializing, but changing the way society confronts the medical establishment and government to demand action.
