The application was tested on a Google Android mobile phone.The result showed that the development process of location and maps-based applications was fast while using Google Android. This was because of two main reasons. First, Google Android Provided APIs for location-based services such as GPS and Cell-ID. Second, having Eclipse with ADT plug-in as the choice to develop the application led to an easy means of debugging and testing.The tracking application was found important to use since it will allow users to trace lost phones or to locate lost people. The application can be developed further by adding a number of features to it such as running in the background, SMS copying and making a spy call.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are dynamic networks populated by mobile stations or mobile nodes (MNs). Specifically, MANETs consist of a collection of nodes randomly placed in a line (not necessarily straight). MANETs do appear in many real-world network applications such as a vehicular MANETs built along a highway in a city environment or people in a particular location. MNs in MANETs are usually laptops, PDAs or mobile phones. These devices may use Bluetooth and/or IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) network interfaces and communicate in a decentralized manner. Mobility is a key feature of MANETs. Each node may work as a router and the network can dynamically change with time; when new nodes can join, and other nodes can leave the network. In this thesis, comparative results of the Queueing Mobility Model and mobility models such as random walk/Brownian model have been carried out via Matlab software simulation. The study investigates the impact of mobility prediction models on mobile nodes' parameters such as the speed, the arrival rate and the size of mobile nodes in a given area. The results have indicated that mobile nodes' arrival rates may have influence on MNs population.

Ad hoc mobile devices heavily depend on the performance of batteries. Optimizing the power consumption is a very crucial issue. To maximize the lifetime of mobile ad hoc network, the power consumption rate of each node must be reduced. In this paper we present a novel energy efficient routing algorithm based on mobile agents to deal with the routing mechanism in the energy-critical environments. A few mobile agents move in the network and communicate with each node. They collect the network information to build the global information matrix of nodes. The routing algorithm chooses a shortest path of all nodes in all possible routes. Additionally, we compare the performance of power-relation routing protocol DSR (Dynamic Source Routing)in simulation environment. The results show that the survivability of Ad Hoc network has been better because of less energy consumption when usingour improved DSR as compare to standard DSR protocol.

Omar Arif Robust Target Localization and Segmentation

This work aims to contribute to the area of visual tracking, which is the process of identifying an object of interest through a sequence of successive images. The thesis explores kernel-based statistical methods. Two algorithms are developed for visual tracking that are robust to noise and occlusions. In the first algorithm, a kernel PCA-based eigenspace representation is used. The de-noising and clustering capabilities of the kernel PCA procedure lead to a robust algorithm. In the second method, a robust density comparison framework is developed that is applied to visual tracking, where an object is tracked by minimizing the distance between a model distribution and given candidate distributions. The superior performance of kernel-based algorithms comes at a price of increased storage and computational requirements. A novel method is developed that takes advantage of the universal approximation capabilities of generalized radial basis function neural networks to reduce the computational and storage requirements for kernel-based methods.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract:This thesis studied the finite element modeling of plane wave acoustic phenomena in ducts. The study looked into finite element factors such as shape functions, mesh refinement, and element distortion.The study concluded that the higher order shape function eight-node quadrilateral element gave considerably better results than lower order shape function four-node quadrilateral element. The eight-node element converged much faster to the analytical solution than the four-node element. The average error, taking all the cases in consideration, for the four-node element was around 30 % for a mesh refinement of about 14 elements per wavelength at 100 Hz frequency. The eight-node element in the other hand had average absolute errors of less than 1% under the same conditions.This section also found that the eight-node element was substantially more resistant to solution deterioration due to element distortion than the four-node element.For example distorting the four-node element up to 60° degrees usually increased errors very rapidly to above 100 % errors. The eight-node element on the other hand usually produced errors of less than 5 % for the same level of distortion.The study showed that the type of boundary condition used had a significant effect on the solution accuracy. The classical transport mechanism for nuclear proteins involves karyopherins importing and exporting the proteins. The karyopherins recognize typically nuclear transport signals in the protein sequence. Three main types of nuclear localization signals (NLS) are focused in the scientific field of nuclear protein transport: monopartite, bipartite and PY-NLS. In studies on nuclear export signals (NES) the specific type of leucine-rich signals is often investigated. The first goal of this thesis was to update NLSdb, a database containing 114 experimental and 194 potential NLS, to the current state of available data. Towards this end, a set of 2452 novel signals with published experimental evidence was extracted from the literature and used as development set. An in silico mutagenesis approach was applied to this set to detect 4301 novel potential NLS in nuclear proteins. We matched these potential NLS in protein sequences of unannotated subcellular localization to identify nuclear proteins. We were able to confirm the predicted localization using our potential NLS in literature. Ad-hoc network has opened a new dimension in wireless networks. It allows wireless nodes to communicate with each other in the absence of centralised support. It does not follow any fixed infrastructure because of the mobility of nodes and multi-path propagations. Link instability and node mobility make routing a core issue in MANETs. A suitable and effective routing mechanism helps to extend the successful deployment of MANETs. In this book, we have studied details of TORA, LDR and ZRP routing protocols which are routing protocols on use in MANET. The effects on the routing efficiencies with a special focus on the pause time, scalability and node density using throughput, network load, end- to-end delay and packet delivery ratio as indices of performance evaluation for FTP traffic were observed by using OPNET 14.0 modular as simulation tool. Based on our observations from literature and empirical study conducted using OPNET, we have found that among the three protocols, no single protocol can successfully provide optimum efficiency in different MANET scenarios.

The performance evaluation is focused on measuring the correctness of the algorithms for tracking applications. The statistics Mc Nemar‟s test has been applied to find the more efficient method for feature extraction and matching. Using the results obtained from this analysis, a set of feature extractor and matching technique has been employed to estimate the direction of a moving object from videos captured using a handheld camera as well as camera fixed on a moving vehicle. The proposed method is capable of detecting left, right, up, and down movements with reasonable accuracy in real world videos.The results are not hundred percent accurate but encouraging enough for further investigation. Robot localization is an important problem in robotics.Simply put, the robot localization problem is as follows. A robot isplaced at an unknown point inside a simple polygon P . The robothas a map of P and can compute visibility polygon from its currentlocation. The robot must determine its correct location inside thepolygon P at a minimum cost of travel distance. We implement anapproximation algorithm as given by Apurva Mudgal [2006]. The paper gives an O(log3 n) factor approximation algorithm however ourmain emphasis is to show the practicality of the algorithm. In thisproject we are simulating it on different maps without taking timecomplexity in consideration. In the past, people listened to an audio broadcast through a radio and watched a video program broadcast through a TV. They used the telephone network to interactively communicate with another party. But now they want to use the Internet not only for text and image communications, but also for audio and video services. The most important in this service is the transmission of voice or video which is done by Voice over Internet Protocol. Thus the transmission of voice over VoIP is done better by WiMAX. But highly developed areas are using only WiFi. Since WiFi is a wireless technology and have many benefits, the number of fixed and mobile users in the particular coverage area also increases. The users in pedestrian environment get a frequent connection to the network than the users in a vehicular environment especially the train. It is due to the lack of coverage distance by the network. So it is very necessary to increase the coverage area for larger distance. The solution to this problem is integrating WiMAX and WiFi.
